The following points are obviously for discussion. 1/ Next tour do Replicas minus excessive rock guitar solo this really wasn't necessary given the infrequency with which Numan plays this live. 2/ Tone down the rock element throughout the shows, yes early Numan has guitar in abundance but was it really played like this originally. 3/ What is Dadadang and did we really care? 4/ Reinstate the members of The Touring Principle band and record the next album with them. 5/ We need Numan to father the bastard son of Sacrifice and Pleasure Principle, this certainly precludes any excessive rock guitar. 6/ The strangled saxophone was thankfully quiet on Sacrifice, this is wise. 7/ Ditto, female singers. 8/ We now as Numanoids have a reassonable collection of anthemic woah-woah-woahs re: Absolution, Are Friends & Love and Napalm 9/ Love and Napalm. I can't stand it. 10/ Issues of unreleased early sessions and obscure live recordings and oddities - there must be some, somewhere. (Outland Unplugged)- thank god for that Dave Complex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Sep 1995 10:00:28 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Answers to Questions from #161 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Paul B. asked: >Is there an e-mail address or even a fax number for the Fan Club? The Fan Club is not hooked up to email which is run put of Gary's parents home. Gary is on-line but lives elsewhere but I think it would be inappropriate to go through Gary for Fan Club problems. Beryl has the P.O. Box to keep some distance between fans and the FC/Numa operation. I know she doesn't want to let phone numers get too widespread hence her not publicizing a number to contact her. I would suggest writing to the P.O. Box address first. Maybe you should put "Urgent" on the envelope. >I have noticed parts of discussions about the re-release of >the albums Berserker, The Fury & Strange Charm. This has been >"imminent" for ages - is it finally going to happen? "Berserker" will see general release on CD within weeks according to Beryl and Gary. This has been lobbied for ever since CDs came into being. It was initally pressed on CD as a limited edition Fan Club only pressing of 2000 in 1991. Numa have intended to release the other two albums for years. I expect they'll get around to it. Remember Numa ia a family run business and Gary has been involved with a lot of projects lately. I don't think we can complain about his output (Images 11, Radial Pair, Dream Corrosion album + EP, Sacrifice, Sacrifice extended, Dark Light album + EP, AQoF CD5, Absolution CD5, Babylon 1-7, Berserker and Human either delivered or expected before the end of 1995 and all since January 1994). >The extended version of Berserker has already been released through the >club, but they announced recently that it is going on general release. >Which version? The original vinyl version (hopefully), or the extended >one? This Q is already in this months set of questions for Gary. I hope to have an answer within 10 days. I suspect it will be the extended version (would take no extra effort on Numa's part). >My suggestion is that all three albums should be released as 2-CD sets >containing both versions of each, also including all associated >remixes and B-sides. "Strange Charm" didn't have an extended version. The singles (bar "This is Love") had extended mixes but that is only two tracks, so a single CD would do. I have mentionde the idea opf two CD sets to Numa but I think the Bablyon series negates the possibility. >Finally, a couple of years ago, about 45 Numan tracks were licensed to >Receiver Records, but only 15 appeared on the "Here I Am" CD that >followed. Is anything due for the other 30? Were there anymore Radio >Heart tracks included in those? The first Receiver compilation was "The Other Side of Gary Numan", "Here I Am" was their second compilation. Earlier this year "Heartbreak Hill" seemed to be announced, and was presumeably the third compilation contracted, but it didn't appear. I have asked Gary about it in this month's Q & A session. The only new-to-CD tracks on this first volume were "Empty Bed, Empty Heart" and "Rumour" which was also on "Here I Am". "Here I Am" was a much better value if you had all the other Numa CDs. >PPS: I was actually JOKING about being a train-spotter, by the way - >honestly!! I'm glad. While understanding the concept of trainspotting in the grand old days of steam locomotives the idea of spotting mass produced, deisel utility vehicles has as much attraction as spotting trash/rubbish trucks/lorries or taxis IMO :-) --- Paul ? asked: >1) Can anyone enlighten me as to what goes on the UK Numan tlephone lines. >Non UK residents can't dial these numbers. They are special toll numbers (charged at higher than normal rates - it's an income source for the company offering the numbers) and it is impossible for the phone company to collect charges for the called number from outside their own telephone system. Imagine the accounting nightmare BT would have to bill companies around the world for calls to their toll numbers. Likewise you can't call any special toll numbers in any other country. >2) I've heard the new album is due in FEB 96 to be called Exile. Any >confirmation ? That's the word from the UK Fan Club. I can't think of a more direct source than Gary himself and I assume he doesn't lie to his parents :-) >3) Do I have a faulty Dream Corrosion CD or is the sound quality less than >perfect (Dark Light sounds SO much better). This issue has been raised with Gary and he is looking into it. He did not do the final mix and transfer to CD for DC which he did on DL. He suspects it was EQ'd wrong. I am not expecting a repressing. >4) Are there any plans to re-issue Images on CD ? Yes, and just like with "The Fury" and "Strange Charm" we have been waiting a long time and will no doubt wait a lot longer. --- danstr@skom.se (Daniel Strandberg) >I'm looking for anything by Sharpe + Numan on CD. I tried a CD-catalogue >recently, but couldn't find anything at all. Are they still in print? They have been out of print for several years. The last copies of the album CD I heard about were appearing in sale bins in UK music stores. There were four CD releases in total - "Automatic" (UK), "I'm on Automatic" (UK CD5), "No More Lies" (UK CD5) and "Voices" (Germany CD5 with same tracks as UK "No More Lies " CD5). All were on Polydor. I've had a couple of rare CDs found for me in Scandanavia so it might not be impossible to find copies still. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi there, I received a response from Gary about Donald's Definitive Poll and he is indeed interested. He hopes to do it if he has time but is falling behind with the new album. I assured him there's no hurry as I'm sure you'll agree, Gary's ranking of his own songs will be quite fascinating to all fans, even if we don't see his form until next spring after the 96 tour! I hope this is incentive for more people to take part. Gary will be able to see what songs fans like and dislike which may help him with his selection of songs for live performance. The more people who take part, the more representative will be the results. Donald will also be able to tell us which participant most closely resembles Gary's own perspective. Wouldn't you like to know if you think like Gary :-) Donald is wanting to wrap the poll up by late November so there's still 2 months to do it. Details and the form can be found in issue #139. I rewrote the instructions for Gary to simplify them and also tailor them to doing the poll on his Macintosh. I highly recommend a two stage process of scoring each song out of ten and then taking all the songs with the same score and ranking them in order of preference. Then final ramkings can be ascribed. If anyone would like these alternative instructions email me. It really isn't as complicated as it might have first appeared. The difficult part is judging which songs you prefer over others. So please consider doing this poll. It'll make fascinating reading, especially if we can see Gary's own perspective. Some interesting things Gary said were: >As far as my advantage in being more familiar with my songs than the fans I >can only say HA! I have completely forgotten about more songs than I can >remember. I have virtually no idea what the lyrics are without getting out >the lyric sheet and looking them up. I haven't a clue about B-sides, extra >tracks on 12" or any of the early stuff that Beggars put out in a variety >of different formats, 'The Plan' album I think was the main one. To be >honest I sometimes find it hard to convince fans when I meet them just how >little of my own stuff I can remember. >'Why did you write the line Blah Blah Blah?' they say and then look at me >as though I'm being awkward when I say 'What song is that from then?' with >a slightly blank expression creeping across my face. >The strange truth is that when I've made an album I very rarely listen to >it again apart from choosing songs to play on tour. This means that after a >while my memory of the songs just fades away. I also have a crap memory for >peoples names and phone numbers which is why I tend to call everybody >'mate'. I still keep my own phone number in the memory store of my >wristwatch as, after living here for 7 years now, I still can't remember >it. >Anyway, glad to take part. So please take it easy on him regarding lyrical references to songs from the early days. As we can tell from the live albums, remembering lyrics is not his strongest suit. OK, that's it wrt the poll. Please email Donald, if you haven't done so already, at dpedder@extro.ucc.su.OZ.AU if you decide to take part. He wants to know who is intending to vote. The release was basically going to be like Asylum 3 - but spread over two discs. Then more master tapes appeared and the search continued for another (I think Wembley was involved). As far as I know this has never been resolved. I suspect that Beggars will make some sort of release when the Numan scene has been quiet for a while - or when they need more money. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: 28 Sep 95 15:01:12 EDT From: Subject: Receiver To: , In #161, marvin@suc3.demon.co.uk asked about the other 30 tracks licensed to Receiver. Well, 14 tracks were also used on "The Other Side of Gary Numan" in 1992 - RRLP 170 on vinyl and RRCD 170 on CD. For some reason, the track Rumour appears on both and I doubt if live tracks on the incorrectly titled "Here I Am" (should be Here Am I) count towards to the total of 45 songs. This means there's at least 20 to come (and most will be from Berserker, The Fury and Strange Charm) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
