Updates have seemingly gone in every day and things are moving along nicely. To summarise, we now have the following facilities: * A news page - no more trawling through old issues of the Digest for that elusive story. * An album discography of studio, compilation and live releases on vinyl and CD. * A singles discography of 7" and 12" vinyl and CD releases. * A complete alphabetical listing of Numan songs - including their year, whether they are singles or album tracks and their release reference. * A complete listing of all Numan tour dates - including the latest dates for 1996. * The start of the Numan story - now amounting to over 12,000 words and going up to the start of 1985. * A general information page. This site is starting to take over my life. Every spare waking second is spent doing something for it. Thanks to the dozens of people who have wrote in about the site - this makes it all worthwhile. Here are my general comments. >1/ Next tour do Replicas minus excessive rock guitar solo this really > wasn't necessary given the infrequency with which Numan plays this > live. >2/ Tone down the rock element throughout the shows, yes early Numan has > guitar in abundance but was it really played like this originally. Several people have mentioned the "overdone" guitar played by Kipper on the Dark Light set. Certainly Kipper could be toned down without complaints from me, but it may actually add to a live performance if you are there, compared to listening to a recording of it in your living room. >3/ What is Dadadang and did we really care? Da Da Dang was basically a name for the same guys who were Radio Heart. The record was a one-off charity recording to help raise funds for Bosnian relief. Gary didn't want to become too close to it beyond fulfilling his contracted obligation as it was so far away from what he was working on musically. I don't expect to see any more GN + DDD efforts, certainly not an album. >4/ Reinstate the members of The Touring Principle band and record the > next album with them. Gary has said he rarely talks with any of the old band. I think he is wanting to move forward rather than backwards even though musically it might be a nice change of of pace. He can't really get a band in his home studio either. While it might be nice to get real drums and a bass player on the studio work I suspect Gary is reluctant to do so at this point (we know so regarding drums). >5/ We need Numan to father the bastard son of Sacrifice and Pleasure > Principle, this certainly precludes any excessive rock guitar. Gary's music is constantly evolving. I don't expect him to go retro bringing back analog synths etc. but IMO Sacrifice brought back much of the Numaness that had been missing since maybe even the Beggars Banquet days. Gary is blending synth and guitar in his own way with unique results. I don't need him to do TPP II when Sacrifice II might rpove just as good. >6/ The strangled saxophone was thankfully quiet on Sacrifice, this is wise. >7/ Ditto, female singers. I'd have to agree with you here. While the sax was effective in some songs it can be overused which is what happened to the female backing vox. They went from being an interesting supportive element to annoying. >8/ We now as Numanoids have a reassonable collection of anthemic > woah-woah-woahs re: Absolution, Are Friends & Love and Napalm I found the return of the "woah-woah-woahs" to be a welcome surprise on "Sacrifice". It's one of Gary's defining song characters. I don't see anything wrong with Gary using them intermittently. >9/ Love and Napalm. I can't stand it. Not sure why. Can you explain further? I liked the song on first hearing - guitar reminiscent of the Tubeway Army days and some great synth work in the instrumental bridge. >10/ Issues of unreleased early sessions and obscure live recordings and > oddities - there must be some, somewhere. A question in this months Q & A session asks if there are any songs left for BB to release. I don't know if any of the shows from the "I, Assassin" or "Warriors" tours were recorded but they would have to be released under BB unless Gary acquired the rights to them. I think we've done well so far with releases. I'm not complaining. >(Outland Unplugged)- thank god for that I have wondered if there are alternative tapes of "Outland", mixed differently before IRS influenced the sound. I can hear elements of "Outland" in "Sacrifice" but the dressing is completely different. Fewer backing vocals, a less dancey beat and it might have been a pretty good album. I thought the Sacrifice version of Replicas was excellent. It's the song I play most from the album. 2. The rock element seems to go down very well at the shows I go to. 3. Dadadang is just another Nicholson/Radio Heart job. We don't care - and nor does Gary. However, his voice on that track was excellent. 4. May be - except that is not progress. New musicians mean new ideas. If Dramatis and Billie Currie had been used for every tour since 1979, Numan would find empty halls greeting him. It was the changes introduced during Dream Corrosion that made that tour so successful. 5. Two of my favourite Numan projects. 6. I Don't mind a bit of sax when it's appropriate. 7. Once again I don't mind it as long as it's not overused. Even on songs like Scar - the female voice does enhance it considerably. 8. Yes. 9. I love it - no song gets a more enthusiastic reception at Numan discos. Everyone seems to love chanting along - I'll Give You Black Rumours and all that. 10. Judging by the number of compilation releases - I can't believe there is much left. Even Numan himself is only finding a couple of new things to put on the Babylon series. I would welcome an unplugged album - the guy has such a talent for live work. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 95 11:55:04 MDT From: "Gene Essman, Jr." Subject: Basic Info To: numan@cs.uwp.edu To whomever, My name is Gene Essman, Jr., 33 years old, and I live in Denver. I've been listening to Mr. Numan since '81, maybe '82. Since Gary Numan is my all-time favorite, I guess you could call me a Numanoid? I do not play an instument of any kind. I enjoy listening to many different musical styles and musicians. Currently, I am listening to OMD, Synergy, The The, Erasure, Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music, Scottish Bagpipes, Midge Ure, Kate Bush, and last but not least, Mr. Numan. I, like most Americans, started with Cars. I felt like the Pleasure Principle was a good album until I began to listen to some of his other stuff. I was and am a BIG Telekon fan. I got to see him on the I, Assassin tour here in Denver, the best concert I've seen (maybe I'm a little biased). I've been a little disappointed that he has not been able to come back over into this neck of the woods and I definitly can't afford to go over seas. Well, I guess that's all for now. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 1995 19:40:58 -0400 From: fishtank@one.net (War-N) Subject: Change of address To: bat@cyberden.com, IpecacLoop@aol.com, CHINAWHITE@delphi.com, Greetings, Sorry for the informal letter, but this the quickest way to let everyone know that my email address has changed. from:fishtank@iac.net to:fishtank@one.net Also the OSAS web page has a new URL - http://w3.one.net/~fishtank Please update your links and bookmarks. This will be the best Numan disco seen in London. It is only four pounds to get in and will run until the early hours in a pub near Liverpool St. Station. The pub will be closed to the public and entry will be by advance ticket only. Mail me if you would like more details. I will update Nu-Zone to reflect this when I can. Steve would like this to be an international disco. It's just a shame he couldn't get it closer to the tour. There would then have been two good reasons to come to England! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Oct 1995 01:20:15 -0400 From: DaveSend@aol.com Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #162 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu unsubscribe end ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 1995 19:33:04 -0500 (CDT) From: Dirk L Holland Subject: Hello everyone! That's about as far as Numan music goes these days in Australia. Sad isn't it. My name is Cameron Adams as you might have guessed I live Down Under near Melbourne. I am 28. I have been listening to Gary for longer than I care to admit and have over the years slowly built it all into a bit of an obsession, although for the last couple of years I have been out of touch, time to get back in. I have a large collection of all things Gary, about 50 plus vinyl disks, various casettes, CD's and Videos and I know just about all of the lyrics to the songs off by heart! One of my most prized possessions is the LP Photograph (which was withdrawn before release) in a gatefold sleeve cover, signed by Gary and others. If someone would care to mail me the discography I will compare it to my collection. My favorite album is Warriors but that is not an easy choice. I was the Australian correspondant for an audio fanzine called Noise Noise from the U.K. a few years ago which was my last real contact with the Numan community. I was once also a member of the official fan club before they went U.K. only. I have a HUGE problem trying to get new releases here (the last 'new' ones were "isolate" and "machine and soul") and was hoping that someone could help me to get any I have missed and future releases. I am trying to get the time to wade through all the mailouts but I will catch up soon and will be able to actively participate. Oh, and put me down for a T Shirt. I have been a Gary Numan fan for quite some time now. The first song I ever remember hearing was the Cars video. I saw it when I stayed up past my bed time sitting around watching television. After that I was hooked and start to get all his previos works. Some of my favorite bands are The Moles, Cardinal, Simple Minds, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Flaming Lips(my brothers in the band), Wire, The Beatles, and I love the Police. I could go on and on but I won't. I play a few instruments myself. I mainly play guitar and piano now but I can play the saxophone descently. I play in a band. Actually not really a band yet because it is just me and my friend. We record alot on our four tracks and are hoping to send some of the stuff in to a record label. Mean while we do that we have been looking for a drummer. My friend plays drums but his main instrument is the guitar or bass. I guess that is about it for now because I am running a little late for my aviation class. Oh ya I forgot to say that I love to fly airplanes. I have only got about 22 hours logged 2 of which I have been pilot in command. Anyway I gotta go. In this message, please let us know who you >are, who some of your favorite artists are, how long you have listened >to Gary Numan. Let us know if you play any instruments or anything else >that might come to mind. OK, here it goes.......... Hi! I'm Mike Haley, 30 yo, and an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oregon. I've been an Numan fan since X-mas 1988. I was home visiting my parents. Tulsa had a tiny alternative radio station at that time. I remember hearing "My Dying Machine" on the radio! Of course it was the dancier version on "New Anger" and not the original off "Berzerker". I had just started to get into more 'electronic' music at the time (New Order, Ultravox, Depeche Mode, Xymox). I liked what I heard, bought the CD, and the rest is history. I'm very possessive about people I listen to, buying any and everything I can get my hands on. As far as I know, I have everything on CD by Gary that I can get my hands on. I'm happy to see that "Berserker" and possibly "The Fury" are going to be re-released on CD as those are the only two I don't have on that format. I was lucky enough a few years back to find a copy of "Strange Charm" on CD. As for other artists I listen too, my musical tastes are quite broad. In addition to the bands mentioned above, some of my other favorites are (in no order): Genesis (old and new), U2, Rush, They Might Be Giants, Police, Sting, Nine Inch Nails, Dire Straits. I think that covers most of them...... Comment: One problem about being a possessive fan is that I buy everything. Since Gary is rather prolific in the number and variety of B-sides, I think it would be great if there was a CD that had all of them collected into a single package. I really like many of them from the '84-'91 era. Prior to '84, the newer releases from B.B. have the extra tracks on the respective CDs now, so only '84-on would need to be covered. Question: Is there some way to still find the CD single for "A Question of Faith"? I would like to hear "Play Like God" and Whisper of Truth". Let's face it, Oregon is NOT music central, and thus getting imports here to Eugene is a task! Any help on this matter would be appreciated Two more quick questions: What was "Radial Pair"? What are the "Babylon" singles? Thanks for humoring me. Best regards, Mike Michael M. I really am a Paul. The offending E-Mail signature has been removed (hopefully!!!!!) and those responsible have been shot. I have read some (but not all) of the archive digests. One of the things that caught my attention was discussion on the Outland CD. Firstly I was surprised at the apparent dislike generally for the CD because it's one of my favourites (as I said in my intro I don't have any problem with Mid - Late period Numan). But what I wasn't aware of was that the album was somewhat plagued by mishap and record company interference. Could someone out there give me a potted history of the troubles which beset this recording. There were also mentions of Numan tribute Cd's and a 'Metal' cover version by Nine Inch Nails. Has anything come of these ? Before I go does anyone know if there are any plans to release a video and /or CD from the next tour. Also can anyone enlighten me about the rumours I heard a couple of years ago that Gary had turned down an offer to join Virgin Records (this would have been about the time of the DC / OMD tours.
