ULTRAVOX ------------------------------ Date: 16 Oct 95 14:40:48 EDT From: Subject: A Visit to Gary To: On Sunday 15th October I spent around eight hours with Gary and Gemma at Outland. We covered a great deal and it's all a bit of a blur! However, I can reveal a few things: - A major deal is looming. If it comes off it could mean a world tour at the end of 1996 and a world distribution deal. - Exile may be delayed if the deal comes off. - 15 tracks have now been written - 10 for the album and five for multi-format single releases. - The Techno Army CD is on course for release by the end of the year but the group name will probably change. - A Numan tribute album is being put together by other artists who have been praising Gary recently. Shampoo are rumoured to be doing Cars. - Cars is being used on a UK lager advert. - The artwork for Berserker has just come in. The pictures are slightly different (the originals had turned yellow), some typos in the lyrics have been corrected and the track listing on the back has been made in to one column. Look out for this at the end of November. - The proofs of the interview in Sound on Sound magazine have come back in. Look out for that in the next month or two. - Human should be out any day. I spotted some typos in the labelling of the CD, although it plays OK. Track 25 is not shown and there is a spelling mistake in another. Quite a few of the tracks will sound familiar to M&S, Sacrifice and Radial Pair listeners. One track - Harmonos - has come from Images 11 and some Unborn material has been included. We're not meant to talk about this as someone might get upset! Here is the track listing: Navigators Bombay We Fold Space A Cry In The Dark Manic Empire A Little Lost Soul The Visitor Magician Undercover Halloween Embryo Elm Street Harmonos Big Alten Blind Faith New Life Fairy Tales Disease Tidal Wave Alone And Afraid Sahara Cold Do You Wonder Betrayal Suspicion The Unborn Lethal Injection Frantic Mother Black Heart Thunder Road Law And Order Needles Climax Inferno - Full international Fan Club membership will be available from 1/1/96. - The NuWorld web site will be live within weeks. - I informed Gary of some regular anti-Numan coverage in a UK magazine. I said to Gary and Gemma that some very positive things are now happening and I'm sure that Numan is going to hit the big time again. The Fan Club, for example, is picking up a lot of new people! Other bands are saying good things, there are more discos than ever, the releases continue, Internet sites are springing up. It can only do good. We wrapped up the meeting just after 18:00 as Gary and Gemma were picking up Richard Beasley and then going down to Ade Orange's flat for a band meeting for the next tour. I desperately tried to keep up with Gary and Gemma in their jeep - around all the winding lanes. We then kept overtaking each other on the motorway until I turned off after a couple of junctions. So, it's all pretty positive news. There may have been something that I've forgotten. If so, I will re-post. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html machman@county.net ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: 17 Oct 95 20:37:51 EDT From: Subject: A Visit to Gary - Berserker update To: I knew there would be something else. I think the make of lager was Tetley Special or Carlsberg Special or something like that (not being a lager drinker myself) Having been a Numan fan only between 1979 and 1983 it was great to hear this classic track again. Wonder if it will be re-released yet again! i think it's been released here in the UK atleast four times!!!!! Does "Rhythym Nation" really sound that much like "Soul Protection"? I don't recall - I never buy Janet Jackson records, but as I could see from the lyrics somebody quoted "RN" plainly doesn't have any real meaning to it - sounds really dumb, actually. At least "Soul Protection" is about something and tries to invoke a little spooky feeling into it. And what's with this "manifesto"? Must be one of our non-musician members, for as a musician I would never want to do things the way I did a decade ago. In Gary's case, a 37-year-old man shouldn't be asked to sound more like he did at age 21. A career and a repertoire are a one-way street extending over the horizon. I wouldn't want Gary to miss a few good new ideas because he was reverting to a previous mode of operation. More importantly, no "manifesto" or anything else of its sort speaks for me as a member of this group. I'd be terribly embarrassed if it was presented to Gary with the appearance of official representation of this group's views. But what about the Music Videos? There has been official collections such as Asylum for the music and the video 'Newman Numan - The best of Gary Numan' for a collage of the videos. How about a complete series for the music videos? Gary was a pioneer of the art of music video in the early days (the clip for I Die: You Die is still fantastic) and I for one would love to see them all together in a collection with from past to present and also maybe on video CD. How about it Gary? How much did IRS interfere? Was it sent back for remixing 4 times? What is the connection with Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation 1814"? I felt some of these things should be straightened out so, potentially abusing my ability to email Gary, I asked him a few direct questions, padded with an apology if they were too sensitive for him to answer. Gary replied with his usual detail which I think will help us all understand this period of his career. It certainly gives me new perspective on "Outland" and hope it will do the same for you. Thanks to Gary for being so open about things. I cannot help but admire Gary's candor. In the following what I wrote is preceded by a '>', Gary's writing has no quote marks before each line. First though, Gary looked over Kay's FAQ and clarified some aspects of his experience with IRS: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- IRS fired me, or in music biz parlance, decided not to exercise their option. They messed with my songs in the most disgraceful way, behind my back and at times against my express wishes. They made me work with people who were completely crap and clueless. I once had to listen to these three monkeys, with not a single record sale between them, telling me where I had been going wrong for my entire career. These three then went to work in my studio, giving out loud praise to each other about how good the changes were that they were making to the sound of a particular song, until I was forced to explain to them that they hadn't actually turned the bloody desk on in the first place and that nothing had changed at all. They were completely brain dead. These people with the dead ears were who Miles had put in charge of my musical 'recovery'. Shite Shite and SHITE. The My World Storm remix, and any other remixes done while at IRS for that matter, are nothing to do with me. I didn't even know some of them were being done let alone approve of them. A most unpleasant period. Here's my exchange about "Outland" with Gary. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- >I hope this is not a touchy subject. I'm asking you this in email because >>if you don't want to answer it, I won't mention it again. I apologise if >>this raises painful issues. I and many others are just insanely curious >>about these things. >I once talked with a guy at IRS in Los Angeles (Milliken or something like >>that) and we discussed the prospects for a big comeback for you in music. >>He felt that you needed to do something revolutionary in music like you >did >with "Replicas" and "The Pleasure Principle". It sounds as if IRS >were >responsible for what "Outland" became which in my opinion is almost >the >opposite of what this guy at IRS was thinking. Is the rumour that >IRS sent >"Outland" back for remixing 4 times true, and if so, is there a >more >Numan-like mix of the album before it was altered to IRS's tastes? 'Outland' was re-mixed 3 times, making a total of 4 mixes altogether. To be honest the overall sound of the album, in my opinion, was actually improved by the changes. My gripe at the time was that we could have gone straight from mix 1 to mix 4 if people at IRS had only made up their minds and not messed about. I do not in any way blame IRS for the final sound of the album or for it not being a fan favourite. That was all my own doing. >The reason I ask, is that I have talked with many about "Outland" and the >>feeling is that there is a good album in there but it was crowded out by >>the wall of percussion, the female vox and the more dancey sound. The percussion and backing vocals was exactly what I was looking for at the time and so I don't think any of the previous mixes would show a significantly different album. Most of the re-mixes were for petty, pointless little changes, although as I say, at the end of the day it was improved albeit by a tortuous route. I have to say that, at the end of the day, this album would appear to be destined to remain a 'least favourite' for many fans. Strangely enough, although I don't like 'Machine And Soul' very much I actually like 'Outland' quite a lot. My girlfriend Gemma was never that keen on it though so I'm used to the idea now and no longer get upset about it. It would seem that I was just going in the wrong direction for my own fan base. 'Machine And Soul' went in the wrong direction for all of us which, in some ways, has probably turned out to be a good thing as it forced a complete re-think on my part with a much better result in 'Sacrifice'. >Another thing many have been wondering is the reason for the similarity >>between 'Soul Protection" and Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation 1814'. They >>are uncannily alike and we are curious if it was pure coincidence, >>independant derivation of the ideas from the same source, or a conscious >>tongue in cheek statement by you to IRS saying "if you want a dance >>orientated sound, here it is". Even the "Outland" album and her "Rhythm >>Nation 1814" have similar structures and she did put out an album called >>"The Pleasure Principle". So many coincidences. I don't really know what to say about 'Soul Protection' and Janet Jackson. I can't in all honesty say we both derived it from the same source. I think I was just listening too hard to how Jam and Lewis put her stuff together in a rather sad and desperate attempt to 'fit in' with what IRS and others around me at the time seemed to be wanting from me. IRS DID want a dance orientated album, hence them forcing the 'Rockers Uptown' wankers in my direction, and I was deep into my lost direction period, although I hadn't realised it then. Her putting out an album called 'Pleasure Principle' is probably because we both saw the same 'Magritte' painting of the same name. I just saw it and stole it first. -------------------- Absolutely fascinating stuff eh? "Outland" was Gary's own doing, not IRS's but it was his susceptibility to IRS's desires and other outside influences that ultimately pushed the album and M&S in that direction. It sounds as if he has a very good perspective on that period and how it was received by fans. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. It wasn't until 1988 when I started work as a programmer that I noticed a couple of Gary Numan tapes next to the tape recorder in work that my Interest returned. Since then I've bought every tape he's released and still love his music. I'd really love to see him in concert and plan to travel to England at some stage to see him. Myself I've just turned 28 and work as Senior Analyst Programmer (by virtue of being the Only Analyst Programmer!) for a company in Limerick (that's the city near Shannon Airport for all you American's out there). My only attempts at music are best described as 'experimental' and mercifully few and far between. I'm still attending college at night doing a Degree in computer Science and I teach the occasional computer nightclass to those stupid enough to turn up. Musicwise I like Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode, Waterboys, Billy Idol, Howard Jones, Blur and many more but still believe the best music was written in the late 70's early 80's. It's great so see someone taking an interest like this and I think the Digest is excellent. Keep up the good work Best Wishes Victor Gannon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Oct 1995 09:56:17 +0000 (GMT) From: Andy Subject: Garys questions To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi Gary... When I was growing up as a gay kid (I was 11 in 1979), youre lyrics on some songs such as Jo The Waiter, etc etc, and various reasonabvly positive "gay-friendly" lyrics in other songs helped me a great deal to come to terms with myself (And Everyday I die helped me come to terms with something else, but lets not go into that !!) Well, I realise youre not gay, but all the same, thanks so much for helping me come through my teenage turmoil! Anyway, when I saw you were playing the G.A.Y. club in London last year I was thrilled ! I had assumed that after your support of the extremely homophobic conservative party in the 80s that a gay club was the last place you would play ! Anyway... Some of the tracks I have listed on the '77 bootleg are... Motherless Faces Boys You dont know me Im a poser Pure Saint Joy Me, my head Can you think of the appropriate titles ? I realise you're not a big fan of discussing politics, but could you give me an idea on where you stand politically, and what your views on the gay age of consent are ? I think we have an opportunity here (after reading one of Gary's responses to the past Q & A) to clear the air on the exact names of it. Anyone care to submit the list from the discography to Gary for his recollections? I have the following tracks listed in the discography: Motherless Faces, Boys, Blue Eyes, You Don't Know Me, My Shadow In Vain, Me My Head, That's Too Bad, Basic J, Do Your Best (Friends), Oh! Didn't I Say, I'm A Poseur, Kill Sir Joy Let me if anyone else has something else listed or in a different order. Does anyone know anything about the Live At The Roxy '78/Vortex '78 7" single bootleg? The tracks listed for this one are: White Light - White Heat b/w Bunch Of Stiffs and "Bunch Of Stiffs" is listed as being by Mean Street with Gary on guitar and backing vocals. This single supposably being from '78 leaves me with questions as well as whether the band was really Mean Street then. I can vouch for the single itself since I have it, but I cannot vouch for what it actually contains. Can anyone help me with these very "early" questions? Maybe Gary's the only one? I understand that we can't always have something to contribute and we are not under any kind of obligation to do so, but there are a great many silent people out there and I for one like to know what you think. Sometimes just tossing an idea around can help, so *speak up*! We are fans of an artist that gets next to no air-play,must we be silent also? You've all felt it I'm sure : looking for his records in all the shops you come across, getting a blank stare when someone asks you what you're listening to on your walkman and you answer Gary Numan and (worst of all) wondering why radio stations can play the same song 15 times a day when they keep overlooking a certain artist... So think about it fellow Numanoids. Between the times when we get official news and the monthly answers from Gary himself I'm sure we can keep ourselves entertained. Case in point : the strange and expensive idea Tony R Boies had in # 166 , of getting together to try and get Exile distributed in North America. This is probably ,as my idea of advertising in a magazine, way too costly but who knows maybe something could develop from such a suggestion So what else is out there...?. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
