The latest thing is to do with the Isolate Tour. I asked Gary about the recordings of that tour - they were supposed to be released on CD ages ago. Gary pointed me to a cupboard in Outland studios. I opened the door and there were three shelves of tapes of Isolate material. Gary says they will definitely be released at some point. It is difficult to see how this can be done - what with Dream Corrosion, Dark Light and also a double live CD from the 1996 tour. Perhaps it could be done as a budget release or to fan club members only? So, where did those Here I Am live recordings come from? Gary doesn't know - his father is looking into it. But, if the tapes are locked in Outland, they are surely not from Isolate. I've had recent discussions with Derek about these and we still cannot decide. Were they taken from the Outland or Emotion tours? Anything earlier would have preceded the song Confession! Could these be good quality bootlegs? Then again, it might be something that IRS has done - Gary says that the company has not returned a letter, Fax or phone call since their agreement ended. I often find most artist's earlier works more interesting before they got the 'rock&roll syndrome'. Hell, most of my stuff from 10 years ago (or even 5) doesn't stand up to what I do now but it doesn't stop me from saying "what would I have done with this 5 years ago?". It can be refreshening. Gary is not reading the Digest to my knowledge and unless I email something to him saying it is the view of the Digest I don't think anything like that will happen. Anything I send to Gary as being representatvie of the views of the Digest as a whole will be voted on. I received very few (<5) negative comments about using the Fury Extended mixes for a potential CD rerelease, producing extended mixes of future albums and doing an unplugged album, so I assumed most were in agreement. I indicated as much to Gary in a recent email. I did express the views of those who disagreed so he can see why those who disagreed, did so. I regarded the manifesto as a proposal for discussion, not as a document purporting to represent the views of all or even a majority of the Digest. I think we have an opportunity here (after reading one of Gary's responses to the past Q & A) to clear the air on the exact names of it. Anyone care to submit the list from the discography to Gary for his recollections? I have the following tracks listed in the discography: Motherless Faces, Boys, Blue Eyes, You Don't Know Me, My Shadow In Vain, Me My Head, That's Too Bad, Basic J, Do Your Best (Friends), Oh! Didn't I Say, I'm A Poseur, Kill Sir Joy Gary announces some of the titles from the Roxy 77 show before the band performs them, which would make (I think) all of the titles above pretty well established as correct, except the last one should be "Pure St. Joy". "Motherless Faces" may have a different title, but that should be the only questionable one, and Gary did refer to it specifically when he talked about the errant titles from the bootleg. Based on the lyrics, "Motherless Faces" is the most obvious guess. Anybody out there with any info on this? Also, regarding my strange and expensive idea, I was talking a sizable amount of money, namely 200 or so people contributing $100 each, making it $20,000. That is a hell of a lot of money to a lot of people, I realize, but it is a worthy cause and would bring a lot of satisfaction to know that members were making a very significant and tangible contribution to Gary's career. There are certainly a lot of problems associated with that, however, such as who would handle the money, how would it be spent, etc. Hopefully it will be a moot point and Gary can get a deal worked out. If there is a definite street date for "Human", send that info along to EMAILICE@aol.com so it will appear in the next issue of ICE, the international CD newsletter. Finally, I still have a lot of Numan vinyl I am parting with, so please email me. Also have rare Numan CD of "Live at the Roxy 77", imported from the small country of Basementia. Clearly, Gary strongly dislikes the material, having said it will automatically go to the bottom of his list in the Definitive Poll. In addition, from interaction with Matthew Holbrook who visited with Gary last weekend, we have gathered that Gary gets irritated by mere mention of these projects. Specifically, the letter Brian and I sent to Tony Webb about Babylon ommissions and suggestions for more volumes with this material, raised his ire. He doesn't want to have to deal with it ever again. It is something he wants to forget. This has only become clear recently. One additional piece of the puzzle that didn't fit was 'Like A Refugee'. I asked Gary about his doing the Da Da Dang collaboration (i.e. the same people as Radio Heart) in light of his dislike of the Radio Heart material: I asked: You commented that the Radio Heart material would automatically go to the bottom of your poll. I must admit I was shocked when I first heard "London Times" on the "Here I Am" compilation. I think my first thought was "Gary does a Phil Collins impression" :-) Can I ask what motivated you to work with the same people again for the "Like A Refugee" single? Gary responded: >The reasons I worked with the Radio Heart people again on the 'Refugee' >song were A, a small amount of family pressure to be willing to explore >different collaborations to 'see what might happen', I personally would >rather have not done it, B, it was slightly tempting to have an all paid >for trip to Italy to make what was actually a very good video, C, it had >been suggested that, if the single was successful, apart from raising my >profile in the business, a rather large advance and a new record deal for >my own material was also on offer and so I needed to be seen to be a >'co-operative and open minded artist'. This kind of subtle looking, but >heavy feeling, pressure crawls like a disease throughout the music >business, particularly when you are not in a strong position and need >others perhaps more than they need you. It is a political tap dance that I >am incredibly bad at. It's a part of the business that I never knew existed >when I was young and eager and, even now, try to avoid at all times. It's >one of the reasons for my decline actually. ------------------- I think we all need to understand several points. 1. Gary is not always pround of everything he's done. 2. He would rather not see certain material reissued. 3. We do not have any right to have everything Gary has done made available to us. 4. He has no control of any material other than his Numa catalogue. All the Beggars Banquet and IRS material and the many collaborations require permission for use, a lot of work and even money for Numa to release. And perhaps understandibly, Gary does not want to spend the time or money doing so. Numa are very small compared to BB, Polydor and IRS/EMI. If Gary can land a big label deal (he is in discussion about a deal as Matthew informed us), there is a chance that things may change. A big label may have the bang to bring about comprehensive music and video compilations, especially if Gary's career enjoys a renaissance. For the time being I think it wise to not push these things. So let's not ask him any questions about it OK? I want to let him get on with his work on 'Exile' and concentrate on the future which appears more promising than for a very long time. Complex Crash I assassin Absolution The fact that we only had five tracks in common illustrates just how wide a range of material Gary has to choose from which in turn tends to re-inforce what Gary was saying about the difficulty in choosing songs for a set. A lot of the difference is accounted for by the fact that I deliberately left out tracks that have appeared on live albums before. I did this in the knowledge that a live CD will probably be released after the next tour. This meant I didn't even consider a lot of great material that Nigel included. For what it's worth these are the tracks which I chose and Nigel didn't. I'd be really interested in hearing what other tracks you all would like to see played. I do the following using Microsoft Works: >From the toolbar with my mouse, I go to Tools and do a "Receive File" to bring the discog file into whatever directory and filename I choose to. Depending on the speed of your modem, it could take a few minutes to many minutes to actually get the discography file from your Net account to your PC. In my view any album which grows on you will endure repeated listenings ad finitum. The point I am attempting to make is that Outland and M&S are completely different albums to Sacrifice. In my view this does not make them BAD albums, compared to other artists attempting to produce the same type of album they are excellent. As far as being examples of what Numan is capable of they are poor. The pure Numan part of his music finished after Dance and continued in Sacrifice, but i enjoyed all the albums in the middle, they were all worth the money ten times over, better and different than anything else available. Sacrifice was an album that learnt from all other albums, u can't decide exactly what u want to do without trying different options. It interests me that The Fury gets very little stick from the fans and that Berserker is so popular, I find The Fury the worst Numan album and Berserker very shallow after repeated listenings, I am sure some people think M&S is Gary's best moment ..my wife does. To sum up on my wandering dialogue I would say that any Numan album is for me better than anything else anyone has ever done, I have my favorites which differ from other fans views, but Numan is at his best dealing with the dark side of life..doing what he wants to do without outside influences..and that includes Numan fans. Good luck with the new album Gary and make something you like...forget everyone else..I know I will love it..the only variable for me is how I compare it to your other albums. First, I would like to thank all the "regulars" and Gary for making this group one of my faves. Too many music related newsgroups are filled with banter that is of no real value to anyone. This group is both entertaining & educational, keep up the great work! I began listening to Numan in 1980, and was lucky to attend one concert in 1981. Years later, out of financial need, I sold my vinyl collection that included a lot of material that I now regret selling. Sad to say that the cash flow situation hasn't improved a whole lot since then, so shelling out $20-25 dollars for an import CD is rare. I would really like to hear more of Gary's music, but can't find even used CD's around here (Cincinnati). Can anyone suggest any mail order businesses that sell used CD's/vinyl at fare prices? Who do you buy your Gary Numan recordings from? Many other music fans collect live tapes of their favorite musicians, a band called something like "Deadly Grateful" has made history with this practice. Do any group members have Live Gary Numan recordings for TRADE only. I will not purchase a "bootleg", but will mail you a blank cassette + postage for a dub of the cassette that you have. I am interested in any live Gary Numan that anyone has to offer. I have several tapes to trade, plus zines, comix, and other fodder. Since my knowledge of Numan is not nearly as complete as others I don't believe that I have much to contribute to the list. I have made a few posts in the past, but I believe that if I don't have anything relevant to say and no important questions to ask then there is no need to take up bandwidth just letting people know that I am here and a fan. I can't speak for everyone who doesn't contribute regularly, but I tend not to because of the reactions that some people get to posting their views. There is certainly nothing wrong with debate or disagreement, but some of the feedback does tend to be a little aggressive and condescending. At least it appears that way to me. Perhaps I'm wrong ? Another reason why most of us don't contribute might be that we all expect the regular contributors to come back with the answers or whatever. It is tedious to read several identical replies to the same question. One final reason might have something to do with stealing other people's thunder. I tend to think that, to name but 2, Derek (L) and Matthew (H) have their fingers on the pulse, so to speak. For example, Matthew obviously listens to the GNFC Information line each month. So do I, but Matthew does a good job reporting the facts to the rest of the digest subscribers who don't use or can't use this service. Many of us, when we first subscribed to this mailing list, posted a brief introduction. In it, many of us recounted the time when we first heard Gary, when we first became fans, things we've done since then that really mark us as dedicated fans, etc. Some have gone further and told tales of getting through difficult times in their lives, thanks in large part to Gary's music. He literally has become a very important part of us. The non-fan (aka "the unwashed heathen") cannot understand this. I've been personally accused of being "obsessed". One particularly nasty person asked me if I wanted to have sex with Gary (the answer is "no", by the way - sorry Gary!) The Question Of Faith is this - why is it that YOU are a Gary Numan fan? What I'm looking for is your writings - tell us why you love the music (and/or the man) so much. If you've got a story about how Gary Numan and/or his music made a DIFFERENCE in your life, that's also what I'm looking for. With enough input from all of you, we can paint a picture of what it truly means to be a "Numanoid". And maybe we'll discover a thing or two ourselves along the way. So here's the deal. Send me your stories and I'll put 'em on my web site for all to see. I will not edit them in any way, so watch your spelling (grin!). I do reserve the right to send your submission back to you if I find it objectionable for any reason (hey, my page, I make the rules) along with my recommendations for changes, but I will not make those changes for you. What goes on the page will be YOU and ONLY you. This will be an ongoing project, so take your time. Send your submissions to me at: numanoid@netway.ab.ca You can view the World Wide Webb page at: http://www.netway.ab.ca/numanoid/wwwebb.htm You can view the current Question Of Faith page (as of this writing there are no submissions yet) at: http://www.netway.ab.ca/numanoid/question.html (You might also consider sending your completed story to this Digest. Not everybody can access the Web yet). My thanks in advance to all who participate. /--------------------------------------------------------- / Joey Lindstrom / numanoid@netway.ab.ca ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
