Time to put on my Headmaster's/Principal's hat :-) THE DIGEST ASKS GARY -------------------- *PLEASE* (note double emphasis), remember to send questions to *ME* not the Digest. It just creates extra work for me to edit out your questions from the Digest and put them in my Gary's Qs directory. So, copy this onto a post it and put it by your computer. Questions to Gary - email: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu - subject: Gary's Qs I'd hate to resort to ignoring questions that are posted to the Digest but it may be something I have to do if the practice continues. I'll be collating this months questions sometime next week. GARY AND THE DIGEST ------------------- I have noticed some posters writing to the Digest as if they are writing to Gary. I feel I can assure you Gary does not read the Digest. He does not have the time nor does he want to expose himself to some of the sharp criticism that sometimes appears here. So there's no need to address Gary in the Digest. His sole interaction with it is via the monthly Q & A session. POSTING ------- Another reminder to not just hit the 'r' key or 'reply' to post to the digest in response to a previous post. A subject line of "Gary Numan Digest V1 #XXX" does not tell readers anything about the subject of the post other than it refers to something in the issue specified. As a courtesy to other readers, and especially those who may be looking for something specific in a back issue, please be descriptive in your subject lines. Use the same subject if it is a response to a previous post so that threads can be followed from issue to issue. Additionally, some people are very sloppy with their editing. Typos do occur I know, and I am not thinking specifically of this, rather keeping posts to 78 or fewer characters per line. I have noticed some posts where people obviously have bigger screens that can display more than 80 characters on a line. Please remember that many do not have the ability to widen their viewing screens. The result is that lines of text go for one full line but then on the next they only go so far, then on the next line, the text goes another full line, but again is followed by a shorter one. This, as I hope you can see, is very annoying. Keeping the number of caharcters per line to 78 or better still 76, saves this problem and also allows quoting without text wrapping to the next line. Others seem to have the other problem of keeping their posts to about 30 characters, like one was reading a newspaper column. Plase push it over 60 if you can so that it is easier to read. ------- I think you'll agree that if we all follow these simple suggestions the Digest will be better for all. Class dismissed :-) Derek P.S. I may have to restrict my contributions to only important stuff for a while as I really do need to get some other work done. It's a shame Brian and Donald are also really tied up at the moment and aren't around to pick up any slack :-( Brian should be back with us in mid November. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. That would explain it as the older CDs are one way and the newer ones are the other. If Gary sent a new DAT tape for a new master to be made for the upcoming "Berserker" CD it will likely have the channels reversed but also sound sharper. I'm not worried by the channel switches at all, though I know some might, and the sharper sound as evident on "Babylon" would be something to look forward to. I'd even buy another copy! Does this mean all the Babylon CDs have reversed channels? I'll have to check. No sign of volume 5 yet :-( Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. If you're lurking and wish to prefer lurking, that's your choice and I'm not going to try to pressure you into posting if you've nothing to say. But a couple of points have been made about WHY some people don't post - in both cases, it's because they feel intimidated. My post today can be summed up in two words: "don't be!" First, the idea that because you're a newcomer and don't have all the answers means you can't add much to the Digest. Balderdash. Try this: read some back issues of the Numan Digest (you can find a complete set on the Web at http://www.netway.ab.ca/numanoid/digests/digests.htm) until you feel "up to speed" with us. Might help you also to read the Gary Numan FAQ as well (also on the web, http://www.netway.ab.ca/numanoid/numanfaq.htm). After you've done all this, let it all percolate and simmer at the back of your mind.... and then start asking questions. Questions either of a factual nature ("how many albums did he release before Berserker?") or of a more subjective nature ("Why do you guys love Berserker so much? I thought it sucked eggs!"), it doesn't matter. This is an EXCELLENT way to get things going, and once it does, you can jump in with YOUR OWN THOUGHTS on the more subjective areas. I'm not a "Numan Insider". I don't talk to Gary regularly - in fact, outside of one email message, he has never communicated to me at all (other than through his music of course). I'm not a SOURCE of Gary Numan information, I'm just a fan. Just like you. What I contribute are my ideas. My opinions. My own personal insight. It isn't always appreciated but it's what I've got to offer, and there it is for you to either take or leave as you see fit. You see, it doesn't matter whether or not you've got a direct line to Numa Records or not. The fact is, you're a fan or you wouldn't be here. The MEAT of this Digest is fans talking to fans about things fannish. Some of the more fun things we've done is debating which albums and/or songs are better than others, Gary's past successes and failures (in OUR opinions), etc. Speak about WHAT YOU KNOW - and what you know is how YOU feel about Gary and his music. I started off my relationship with this group feeling the same way many of you do - I felt that these people knew everything and that the few things I knew were learned from reading this newsletter. Yet I jumped right in, head first. I know I've annoyed several people, particularly when I took people to task for slagging much of Gary's later work so harshly (yeah, maybe I was overreacting). But I was speaking about WHAT I KNEW - and what I knew was that I really, really enjoyed both Outland and Machine+Soul (particularly, as I've said too many times already, the song "I Wonder" - which I think is his FINEST ballad... just think: in the last Digest, somebody actually said this album wasn't very deep. HAH! Grin!), so I came right out and said so. Sure, you can debate whether these albums had the same "Numanness" (whatever that really means) that previous albums (or Sacrifice) had, but I felt that they weren't being given a chance to stand on their own merits - and on their own, they hold up pretty damned well. So, I came out and said so, and stirred up some controversy. I took a lot of heat for it too, but today you see a lot more people defending those albums too. This brings me to the second point: some people see other posters take a lot of heat for their posts, which generate "condescending" replies. Don't be afraid to say what's on your mind. If you think some of the "heat" that comes back is too condescending, say so - just try to stay civilized. Please always remember one thing - this Digest belongs to you just as much as it does to Matt Holbrook, Derek Langsford, myself, and all the other "regular contributors". Yes, it's FANTASTIC that some of these people are able to contribute a steady stream of Numan News to keep us up to date on what's happening, but this isn't merely a Numa Records press release mechanism (although I'm certainly VERY glad we can handle that function too). It's for people to talk to each other. I've gained SO MUCH INSIGHT into Gary's music from talking to and listening to other people VIA THIS NEWSLETTER, insight that wouldn't have been nearly as complete if I were merely reading other people's opinions. Thrash ideas around. Get typing! Say what's on your mind (but again, keep it civilized). The worst that can happen is that somebody will be rude to you - in which case, he's already lost the argument. So if you're holding back because you're feeling intimidated, please - don't let that bother you. Sure it's tough to overcome, but just jump right in there and do it. So what if your email box fills up with nastygrams? You've got a DELETE key. Use it, but learn from the experience. Finally, in defense of the "regular crowd" here, I've found that most of the really condescending replies are made towards those who cop an attitude - they've been rude, arrogant, banal, or just plain goofy in their original postings. We're a civilized group and we will read your posts carefully - if you've made a valid point, we'll see it and address your point. Take care in your posting style (ie: "Berserker sucks eggs!" won't win you any brownie points at all, but "I thought Berserker was a bit shallow" will generate quite a bit of discussion; try to encourage others to debate your POINTS, not your STYLE) and do what you can to make your point clearly. If you're not sure if you can do that, just try it. You'll sharpen your skills only through practice. The Gary Numan Digest benefits from having a rich, diverse group from which to draw articles. You are a part of that mix - the more diverse it gets, the better. If you've got something to say, then we want to hear it. If after all this you still don't - hey, no problem. Keep reading - because sooner or later, you WILL have something to say. And I, for one, want to hear what it is. /--------------------------------------------------------- / Joey Lindstrom / numanoid@netway.ab.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Oct 95 04:10:10 -0400 From: jon.lester@index.com Subject: An Inadvertent Swap To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hey, is it me or did everyone get an issue of "The American Reporter" instead of the last digest? Looking down the list brought back some excellent memories which I'm going to bore you all with now. Gary played "War Songs" on the Sacrifice tour, but only once. It was on the first night at the Guildford Civic. The band went wrong a couple of times, which seemed to amuse most of them rather than wind them up. At the end Gary said, "Nothing short of a disaster" (or something like that) and grinned at the crowd. I also saw Gary play "Strange Charm" again at the Guildford Civic on the Isolate tour. To my knowledge he didn't play it again that tour either. I seem to recall him saying that there were too many songs in the set that were putting too much strain on his voice, so he had to drop one or two of the higher pitched songs. Shame 'cos it was excellent and has never made it to a live album. I go to record fairs from time to time. Quite a few years back now, I picked up a bootleg tape of the Manchester Apollo date from the Teletour. The tape was cut (apparently) by the mixing desk folks and the quality, for a bootleg, is brilliant. Amongst the classics on the tape are "Telekon" and the ultimate version on "Complex". Anyone else who has this tape will know what I mean. Anyone else who might be able to get hold of a copy, my advice is - DO IT ! And finally, Paul asked about playing GN stuff to non-believers. Well, over the years I have converted several girlfriends to the faith, a few friends (that's a few of my friends, not I've only got a few friends ;-)). I've even taken my Mum to a concert when I had a spare ticket way back when Yen were the support band. That might be a good topic for the web site, who the support bands were and 'where are they now'. Anyhow, my Mum thought Gary was a brilliant showman, but didn't go much on the music (too loud apparently). Still, she does listen to Johnny Mathis so what can you expect ? Have acquired lots of stuff since, and never wavered in my devotion; just about fainted (and went broke) when I first saw the Tower Records store in Picadilly. Saw Gary in concert in Chicago, 11/82. Second, to echo Aaron Hannum's sentiments regarding the Janet Jackson/Gary Numan discussion, artists do indeed often pickup on little things they hear from other artists, whether consciously or unconsciously. There is almost no musician working today who composes in a total creative vacuum. Gary has (seemingly) borrowed from Bowie, Ultravox, Japan, Brian Eno among others early in his career, and as the music industry has changed, so have the influences upon artists. If you listen to some Nine Inch Nails songs, you might even hear a little bit of Gary's "Pleasure Principle" or "Berserker" albums. And let us never forget this: to continue to be a success in the music industry, especially in the middle of a long career, artists have to attract new fans while also trying to retain the base they have already established. It's very tricky. Recreating "Replicas" or "Telekon" year after year will please a lot of fans, but it is doubtful to propel Gary back to the top. I've stated before in the digest that I personally felt that "Machine & Soul" had a lot of U.S. potential, if only people could have heard it, even though it compares unfavorably from a Numanoid perspective to "Berserker" or "Replicas". I would like to make some comments about a few things that a few members noted in the last digest about why some members are silent. I would like to say that I am a regular subscriber to the digest, but for the most part, I am one of the silent ones. I have contributed a few things in the past, but usually most of my questions are answered for me before I have the chance to ask them. Besides this, though I remember Gary Numan's song "Cars" as a child of 7 or 8, I've only recently gotten into his music (1993), so I obviously don't know that much about him, except what I learn from the digest. Most folks on the digest seem to be traditional fans, being that they've been listening to Gary for a long time. So for obvious reasons, I have very little to contribute. I would also like to point out something someone else said about some members' atitudes. I have contributed some things in the past, whether I was merely trying to learn more about something or whether I was just contributing something just for the sake of other people's interest. I admitt that sometimes you have to be careful about what you say on the digest, because some people get all fired up about it. I had made the mistake in asking whether or not anyone else thought that some of Gary Numan's lyrics had S&M references in them. I have this friend who really likes Gary Numan's music and that is not a member of the digest, point out to me that it seemed to him that there were obvious references. I thought I'd be brave and pop the question. I admitt it is a bold topic, but instead of receiving "open-mindedness," I received some very rude comments. For example, this one guy e-mailed me personally to tell me to piss off, which I thought was very unnecessary considering that I later learned that it wasn't the first time that sexually referenced questions about Gary's lyrics came up. However, I did get a few informative replies and I thank those who did have an open-mind. I should also point out that Gary's lyrics facinate me and through them, I've learned a little more about him, since he's fairly personal. I've learned a little about his love of aeroplanes and cars as well as his SF references. So, for those of you who are wondering, my interest in Gary's music is not perverted. Gary is pretty much my main idol and to learn anything I can about him, no matter what it is, thrills me greatly! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi! I am very new to internet and was VERY pleased to find such an active hive of Numanoids. Now that I understand a bit about how this all works, I wanted to introduce myself... I am Fred Holtz, a Numan fan since 1978. I am a Psychologist from Long Island, New York and have been an avid collector of Numan's material since the very first time I heard "Are Friends Electric" on the radio. I have seen Gary in concert 5 or 6 times, and have spoken with him a few times after some of his New York appearances (he was always polite, informative, and quite open). (I wonder if Gary remembers reading the copy of FUTURES magazine which I gave him after the Teletour?). I was stunned by the special effects, music, and showmanship of those early concerts. To this day I am annoyed that commercial American Radio has neglected Gary's musical talents. My fondest memory of talking with Gary was when I had mentioned to him that I had just bought his picture disc in the shape of an airplane. His response was: "You HAVE one of those? I can't even get those anymore!". (PS: How do some of you happen to be able to contact Gary personally?). I have what is, I think, an extensive collection of LP's, picture discs, promotional posters, books, references, reviews, articles, autographs, videos and CD's of Gary's material. I just bought dark light yesterday to bring me up-to-date. My favorite recent project was the CD single having the remixes of Cars (but I was disappointed I did not win the trip to the UK!) Although I am more obsessed with collecting Gary's material, I also collect Ultravox (obviously), Kraftwerk, Klaatu, OMD, Mike Oldfield, Synergy, Nash The Slash and many other groups. I also have read almost all of Philip K. Dick's science fiction and enjoy finding the references that Gary used for his earlier songs. I am not a great musician, but I play around with keyboards and drum machines (all on cassette 4-Track). I was very impressed by this digest and I am very happy to be a part of what's going on here. If I can contribute anything, I would be more than happy to assist in any aspect of this digest. Thanks again! Fred L. We'd face the same problems that bootleggers have. And remember, Gary's CDs are available in many markets in the USA as imports for the devoted. If we were able to get the new album out at regular US prices it might have an impact on new-customer sales but it really is not a chance I'd be willing to take at this point. Who is going to take a chance on an album from a guy they've never heard of or only know for "Cars"? Gary's album will ned promotion as well, something $20K wouldn't cover. Leave it to the big guys. If Gary's deal with a major falls through there are still other possibilities in the USA with smaller labels. I have heard several might be interested. Derek P.S. I sent email to ICE magazine about "Human" and the upcoming Berserker CD issue. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu hello to everyone. it's time to post a reminder to everyone, especially the new members, that imp graphic studios is offering to design and create a Numanews Tshirt for all members of the digest. i've already created the artwork, and i've made a small GIF file to show everyone what it will look like. in order to expedite this process, i will be uploading two (2) separate files to each member, individually. the FIRST ("Numanews Tshirt info") will be an intro by derek langsford [who the hell is he? has anyone ever heard of this guy?! ]:) ] which outlines everything you ever wanted to know about the this shirt, but were afraid to ask. the SECOND ("Numanews Tshirt GIF"), will be the actual GIF of the shirt, which shows you the front and back. if you don't want to see it, or don't have a GIF viewer, simply do NOT download it. (BTW, if you have access to a different viewer, send me a note and i'll try my best to send a custom file. please be without other options if you do this, though; i'm a busy guy!). that's pretty much it. i hope you all like it, and flood my mailbox with requests for six or seven hundred thousand shirts. don't forget to read derek's (we all love derek, don't we?!) intro; it undoubtedly will answer the questions someone will undoubtedly ask. ]:) imp out. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Oct 95 09:26:27 -0400 From: daveleck@atlcom.net (David Leck) Subject: University of Numania To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Seems to me that somebody needs their funding revoked.
