I am 28 yrs of age. I am a research analyst for Bloomberg Financial Markets in Princeton NJ (USA). I have listened to Gary Numan since the summer of 79. (i was 12!!)...the minute i heard him, i knew he was a breed apart from the rest. I have every album (vinyl most of them) but was absolutely amazed to find that there exists other fans of the artist! I play in a band called the Shax, i play bass and guitar, been playing since about 86 or so...and play around the jersey and New york city area...i am wondering if the large majority on this mailer is American or British, because my company 'Bloomberg Financial Markets", also has a major sales office in London, which i might go to eventually...well, enough of the boring stuff....good to be aboard. dan c ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Nov 1995 06:52:40 -0500 (EST) From: "Douglas T. Gibson" Subject: Comments on Dance To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello everyone! I would like to make some comments about Gary Numan's "Dance" album in regards to Nigel Day's comments. First of all, I don't find "Dance" to be a strange experience, just a different one. Since Gary has a way a of reinventing himself, I'm always anxious to hear what he coming out with next, since it's a "new" experience everytime or it's like learning about a new part of him that I didn't see on the last album. I have no serious or critical remarks. I never do, since I admire most of what Gary puts out. There are a few songs on this album that I feel have an "overused" quality to them, but they aren't bad songs nonetheless. Personally, I like "Dance" a lot. I think it has a very "romantic" quality to it and I think it's one of those kinds of albums you want to pop in and play after a long hard day. Atleast it works for me, since I find it to be an overall "soothing" album. Also, I don't find "I Sing Rain" to be a "horrible" song. It's very different and I like it, because it comes across to me as "experimental." I think maybe Gary had an idea that he was toying with and decided to present it in a really different way and/or maybe he wanted to express that idea in the way it came across to him and so the "unusualness" of the tune is how he interpreted his idea? Or, like the rest of the album, maybe he was trying to create a mood and just threw in something different for the effect? I don't know. I figure you have to add seasoning to the soup to give it flavor. Anyhow, I love the tune! I'm not trying to critisize anything Nigel said. I purely respect how he feels about the album, but I wanted to add my two cents into the comments since it seems now there are opportunities opening up for me to participate in the digest. Dance has been one of my fav Numan discs ever since I bought the album in '83 or '84. I agree with you, side one has an ethereal quality about that is almost indescribable, and side two, well, the highlights of side two are definitely 'She's got claws' 'Crash', and 'Boys like me'. I shudder at the thought of listening to 'I sing rain', but that's probably because I can't stand it when people go out of tune. It just grates on me nerves, more than nails on a blackboard. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I sincerely hope none of the "lurkers" in this group felt I was picking on them when I strongly encouraged you to post more. That wasn't my intent. As many of you have pointed out, there are a wide variety of reasons for lurking, the best example being a lack of time. If you have just enough available time to read the digest (even if you have to catch up on three months worth in one sitting) and not enough left over for replies, then fine. You have a life to lead - live it. That's far more important (c'mon folks, admit it!) than bickering over why Outland sucked. On the other hand, if you're reading the digest and you think of something you'd like to say, maybe jot down a note on a piece of paper and get back to it later, if/when you have time (and if that point isn't raised in a subsequent digest by another subscriber). My whole point was to go after those of you that felt afraid to post, or felt discouraged from posting. I wanted to draw you out and tell you, quite truthfully, that your opinions are JUST as valid as anybody else's (including Gary's), and that you should try to overcome these feelings. This presupposes the fact that it was feelings such as this that were holding you back from posting. This isn't always the case. If you've got other reasons for not posting, PLEASE don't feel guilty about it. Most people I know don't write letters to the editor of their local newspaper and they get along just fine, guilt-free. POSTING TO THIS GROUP IS NOT A MANDATORY REQUIREMENT FOR MEMBERSHIP! Please don't forget that. The only point I was trying to make is the corrolary, which is: HAVING "INSIDE KNOWLEDGE" OR A "UNIQUE INSIGHT" IS NOT A MANDATORY PREREQUISITE TO POSTING. THE ONLY PREREQUISITE IS THAT YOU ARE A FAN OF GARY NUMAN. (And even then, by some definitions of "fan", even that prerequisite doesn't always hold... heh heh!) So relax folks, and let's put the "lurkers versus posters" debate to bed (next to Mystery) and get on with other things, kay? /--------------------------------------------------------- / Joey Lindstrom / numanoid@netway.ab.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Nov 95 09:15:00 PST From: Arron Clague Subject: Introduction To: Numan Mail Hello, I am Arron Clague, and originally come from a small Island off the coast of the UK called the Isle of Man. Gary has remained my fav musical artist not only because of his music, but for the simple fact that he dares to change. I'd much rather have an artist go in a direction I don't like than have them go stagnant. Of couse, Gary could play Muzak and I'd buy it...and there are *very* few musicians I'm willing to do that for (k.d.lang, Thomas Dolby, and Oingo Boingo, for the curious). My name is Joe Hendry, I live in Scotland in the UK. I am 29 , married with a three year old daughter and have been a Numan fan since I was thirteen. My wife and a close friend (who is not on the net) are also fans and we go to gigs whenever Gary comes to Scotland. I used to get annoyed when I was younger when people said things like " the music is all the same" and that it had "no emotion". I think Garys music struck a real chord in me . It really moves me. I dont really like plinkety plonk synth music (like early Depeche Mode- later stuff is good) and Garys music is SERIOUS SYNTH. I just bought the new release Human yesterday, its interesting , but have to admit that while I like it I miss Garys vocals. I know he is not a conventional "singer" as such but I love the way he uses his voice.I think the song "exhibition" is amazing(b-side of Shes got claws). I was given Sacrifice as a present last year and have hrdly stopped playing it. It is Garys best since Metal Rhythm which for me was a high point. I also got Dark Light earlier in the year but was a bit disturbed- is there miming going on there? Also I think Gary should drop the hairpiece! Although I have never met Gary, I have tried several times! When I was 17 I went to see the Warriors Tour at the wonderful Glasgow Apollo (which is no-more). I bunked off high school that day and hung around the stage door. Got a quick glance of him going in and leaving. Although he was passed his peak popularity wise it was a full house and he went down a storm. I couldnt speak thje next day my throat was so sore with singing! I have got quite a lot of photos which i have taken over the years. Do u think they can be of use, I have a scanner so i can send Jpegs Gifs or bitmaps. Please let me know. I dont want to infringe any copyrights though! If you know of any other Numan fans who want to correspond, please ask them to drop me a line. I look forward to hearing from you. (don't be afraid, I know Brits don't like germans, but not all are stupid ...) I would be very very glad if You add me to the NUMAN mailing-list. Please let me know if and please use the following text to insert in: Hi to everyone, especially to Numanoids, I'am Mark(us) Dietrich, 28 years old, finished studiing computer science and I'm from the south of germany (wuerzburg/nuernberg). I'm Numan fan since 1981 when I first heard music of him and this was absolutely music that must came from an alien or a mutant (and it was!!!). Since that time I always heard his music, but when I began studi- ing I changed to a real Numanoid. That means that I supported Numan with my little power to make him more present in record shops and so on ... I take part in a video competition where I indirectly used Numan as topic and that had only the reason to let people see the mystic. I also used my technical ability in order to make the computers in some record branches of a big record seller to deliver more numan articles in stead of other products. At that time I was really mad and my (girl-)friends are afraid of me. In 1991 it happens. Fortunately I read in Melody Maker that Numan has a tour (Outland). In one second I decided to travell to London. I was not sure if I would got a ticket but I started. And it was great because I got a ticket for saturday, but was already there on friday. On the afternoon I went to Hammersmith Odeon and I heard the sound check. With no scruple I took the door that was declared as "personal only" and I had a short Numan concert for my own!!! This and the next saturday were the greatest moments in my life!!! I most like numan live recordings (especially in the former times) => Living Ornaments 79/80 (CD Asylum 3), because when I close my eyes I can feel that atmosphere. I am sad that I was not no a concert at this (more synthy like) times. I have a copy of the legendary "Micromusic" concert video (at Wembley Arena 81), it is madness. But the CD "Sacrifice" I really enjoy although I got notice from it very late. I think for me its the best studio album since "I, assassin"! Like a Numanoid I began to play keyboard, but I don't play very good, I'm more interested in getting synthy waving sounds. But I tried to join bands as vocalist. I think I am not too bad. The greatest problem is that here in my region there are only rock bands. I hate it. But my voice is very similar or is mutate in this last decade to Numans voice, yes I think that is happened. Do not think that I am a braggart, I have full respect of Gary. But when people hear me the first time, they say that my voice is like David Bowie's. Naturally they are fools, because they don't know who has really influenced me! I most like synthy music (unplugged is cruel), so I also like Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, ... and some kind of TECHNO. I have some questions to You all knowing Brits: Does there is a film who Gary acts in?!? Does there is a film which uses Numan music as soundtrack or background?!? Is there planed a multimedia CD (containing pictures, live- clips, interviews, interactive usage, ...) from Numan?!? This must be, because he is the synonym for technical revolutions!!!
