It apparently went out on time but took 3 days to get anywhere. I look for my Digest as eagerly as anyone and if it fails to show up I act immediately to try and resolve the problem. I'll be out of town this Monday though so if Sunday's fails to appear again, it might be Tuesday before I know. TIME ---- I'm sorry I have not been very visible in recent Digests and I suspect that will continue for a while as I finish my Ph.D. and look for employment. I fully expect to maintain my email account and connection with Gary and the Digest should I leave this University. We don't expect to move from San Diego and my wife works in the computer support group for my department, I know the sysadmin fairly well, and we have a modem at home :-) CHANGING ADDRESS ETC. --------------------- PLEASE remember to use the numan-request@cs.uwp.edu to make address changes. Please don't post to the Digest. I have to email each person who does so. I have no access to the Digest subscription list or software. The numan-request account is held by the person who handles all that side of things. The Numan Digest does not run on majordomo software so those "unsubscribe" or "subscribe" posts don't work. DEBATES ------- Donald handed the ball in #173 to me regarding debates. I have been meaning to post for more than a week about it, ever since Nigel posted his thoughts on the "Dance" album. For a while, Donald and I have been discussing the idea of providing more focus in the Digest discussion. Rather than it just being the accumulation of what people feel like contributing the idea was to add a chosen subject for disussion each month that would be something any subscriber could write about. This would be useful in that it would give opportunities for all subscribers to offer their opinions and at a later date, if someone wanted info about an album or such, one could direct them to the Digests of such and such a month. Possible subjects include each of the studio albums (that's why Donald posted that Nigel had got off to a false start - hope he got the American football reference), then there's the live albums, also other subjects: collaborations, choice of singles, favourite songs, last favourite songs, Gary's images, etc. etc. The idea was that we would have one subject per month with the idea of starting off after the Definitive Poll is over (which reminds me I must get to that). Originally we hoped to have the month's debate subject noted at the head of each Digest but that may not be possible. Still, I am sure something can be worked out. The Definitive Poll is set to close at the end of this month and with the year inexorably heading to the year end "festival of consumerism" it might be best to wait till the new year to kick off this idea. That will give us a chance to debate the idea before any launch. One subscriber emailed me, crying out for something like this so I know we are not the only ones. My apologies for the delay. Thanks for all the kudos people are giving me, it helps me justify the time I spend doing Digest things. To: Digest Possibly too late for the Sunday posting - but here goes. Gary's NuWorld site is now available for the masses to play with. We've got him his own domain name - but it lives on the same server as my NU-Zone site. Here is the URL: http://www.numan.co.uk/ Any problems - best let Derek or myself know and we will forward them to Gary. Matthew ------------------------------ Date: 10 Nov 95 15:22:30 EST From: Subject: A delay to "Exile" To: Whilst waiting for the problems with Digest 172 to be sorted out, I held back on posting. Anyway, for those that don't know, Exile has been put back to later in the year. It's strange because I was telling a few friends the week before the announcement that I thought this would happen. I can see several reasons for the delay and I can also see some similarities with past releases. Gary was getting very behind with the album. He had been spending days and nights on this Internet stuff. His code now sits on a server in Chelmsford - the same one that my NU-Zone site is housed. There was a major panic the other day when it was discovered that NuWorld looked terrible in NetScape 2. Gary has used hundreds of NetScape extensions and these don't seem to have been implemented well on version 2. He therefore had to rush down to see the HTML doctors at County Internet Services. As well as this, the deal with Castle Communications is looking quite positive. At the moment, the main thing happening with them is the dance release that will come out on 4 March (with a single on 5 February). They pressured Gary in to delaying Exile. With everything else going on, I doubt if he needed much pursuading. The same thing happened with Sacrifice. Beggars Banquet wanted to plug their five double CDs on the Dream Corrosion tour. As Gary was behind with that album as well, the decision was taken to delay it and introduce more older material on the tour. The dance release is no substitute for a new Numan album - but there is thought to be a large marketing budget behind it. Being that the album includes both old and modern Numan tracks, it might lead some people to search out Numan albums (which are not easy to obtain!!) Still, it looks like The Fury and Strange Charm will not be far behind Berserker in the release stakes. My Guess is that Exile will come out at the start of November 1996, with a world tour at the end of November. Perhaps that's a bit optimistic, but we will see. Here are the songs recorded for the dance album: Are 'Friends' Electric? (2 versions). Cars. We Are So Fragile. We Are Glass. I Die You Die. She's Got Claws. Emotion. Machine And Soul. Deadliner. A Question Of Faith. U Got The Look. (pressure from Castle) So, it's not all bad news. The Castle deal looks like being good news - as long as they don't send Exile back four times for remixing and turn it into a dance album. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html machman@county.net ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Nov 1995 14:19:23 GMT From: Simon.Wooldridge__Mr@att.com Subject: Dance/Metal Rhythm To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Thought it may be time to add my own thoughts on these two albums. I am currently listening to Dance as I work in my office. It's an album that should be heard in one go to be appreciated best (as someone mentioned recently), although this has been quite difficult at times with constant interruptions from inconsiderate co-workers(!). I wasn't too keen on this album when I first got it a few months ago. This was the only album up to Warriors that I didn't manage to get in vinyl. It does tend to grow on me though. There a few standout tracks for me, `Crash' & `You are, you are', but the whole album gels together really well IMHO. Even `I sing rain' fits the general mood (I have the double cd version twinned with `Tubeway Army'). BTW, not trying to besmirch the memory of Paul Gardiner, but why is `Stormtrooper in drag' credited as his release when it appears to be a typical Numan song? Good bass on this track though, Paul. I also really like Metal Rhythm. Totally different style from anything of his I'd heard before, and sounded like Gary was trying to be more commercial (possibly in order to get more radioplay/exposure). I'm sure I saw this album described somewhere as his `Janet Jackson' phase, and I have to disagree totally on this. This tracks on MR sound more rock-y, and have quite a hard edge to them. My standout on this album are America, New Anger and This Is Emotion. What's so bad about wailing female vox? Each to his/her own. Enough warbling. ttfn, Si swooldri@mlsmc.mlm.att.com Systems Equipment Engineer AT&T Network Systems UK Malmesbury Wiltshire Sunny England ------------------------------ Date: 09 Nov 95 15:40:25 EST From: Sean Francis <100557.3713@compuserve.com> Subject: Dance Thoughts To: Digest Numan Digesters, I thought Nigel Day's idea of doing retro reviews of past Numan albums was excellent. So, here are my thoughts on "Dance" too. When I first heard it, it didn't have enough synth for my liking. At the tender age of 15 I didn't necessarily appreciate the brilliant playing by some of the musicians. "Slow Car To China" did go on a bit, but my spirits lifted considerably after "Night Talk" and "A Subway Called You". I adore the outro to that track. How did he do that ? "Cry The Clock Said" meant more to me years later when I could appreciate the sentiments. Then the single, then "Crash". I play this to friends who say that Numan's got no vocal range. Nuff said. Loads of synth on "Boys Like Me". I don't mind the female vocal on this. "Stories" used to me my favourite on this album. Simple and effective with a nice twist at the end of the 'story'. Apart from "Mistasax Part 2 ", I think "My Brother's Time" has the most beautiful sax solo I've ever heard. Wonderful. "You Are, You Are" sounds like a re-write of "We Are Glass" to me. Another digest poster (forget who - sorry) said the track sounded flat or weak or something. I do too. It's almost as if it's got no bass. And finally, the best track (IMO) , "Moral". Just spectacular. I have my own home studio and although I don't record any Numan covers I must confess to having spent some hours working out the guitar for "Moral". I'm not the best guitarist in the world, so if anyone can help me out by telling me what the chords definitely are, then I'd be a very happy fan. Whilst on about this era, does anyone know if Gary just made up the words for "I Sing Rain" on the spur of the moment or if he had an idea about them before hand ? And finally, I bought a fanzine from the Numan convention back in '93. It reviewed all the studio albums and there's a line from the "Dance" review which I thought was quite interesting. It reads, "Out of all the studio albums Numan has released, 'Dance' stands out as the most different and unusual, unfortunately it seems unlikely that he will ever be tempted to alter his stype so drastically again". I'd tend to agree with that. Whilst I saw "Sacrifice" as a major return to form for Gary, it is typically 'Numanesque'. "Dance" was so different from "Telekon" that for that reason alone it stands out in my memory as being a definite high point. Looking forward to the next one Nigel. Later, Sean. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ email : 100557.3713@compuserve.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Nov 1995 15:01:22 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Details of 1996 tour To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Several people have posted about the 96 tour needing info on dates and how to get tickets. To: Gary Numan Digest If you are expecting "Human" to be similar to the recent Sacrifice material, you may be disappointed. If you're like me and were looking forward to some insight into Outland and Machine & Soul, you will find this an interesting album. Although Outland and Machine & Soul are not my most favorite albums, I find the new Human album to be a rare look into Gary's early thoughts on those albums as well as various tid bits from The Unborn soundtrack. IMHO IRS missed out on releasing the soundtrack as it shows a side of Gary's music that is relatively unexplored and untapped until now. I didn't think much of the movie itself, but I did enjoy listening to the hauntingly atmospheric music that Gary and Mike Smith composed for it. "Human is not a conventional instrumental album" as Gary says on the sleeve notes, but I am really enjoying the early look at the 1991 and 1992 material. I think it's a bold move for Gary to release Human, but a good one at that. I don't know about anyone else, but as a courtesy to all on the Digest, can we keep each message to a maximum of 40 lines. That's an awful lot of lines when you think about it. Look! After trembling and gibbering to myself for a while, I went up to him, mumbled something and shook his hand. The great man smiled & said 'Cheers'. I wandered off in a daze! By excitement could not therefore be contained when I discovered the existence of the Numan digest. As a Numan fan of sixteen or so years this really the first chance to communicate at great length on a variety of topics and points of reference with a large group of like-minded individuals just inspired by all things Numan. Or I wished. Is the digest to be taken over by sanctimonious individuals who seek to preserve a belief, one Im not familiar with else where in life, whereby retrospective analyses (remember why you went to Wembley in the snow APR '81) and, god forbid, humour are displaced in favour of a single view that all Numan is good, just some is better than others and a degree of criticism are acceptable but don't laugh about it. BRIDGE WHAT BRIDGE? Why the criticism of the "manifesto" posting? Well I received fractionally more hate mail than extra points for the manifesto through personal Email. But hey Mr & Mrs Serious Numan fan I think its OK to enjoy Numan by looking at the annoying (and endearing (think of your partner)) Numanisms and enjoy them, as well as endlessly pontificating as to the issue of lurkers. Is there such an issue? Or where we hear to share an opinion or two on Numan? I never asked for Pleasure Principle 2. But I laughed when Gary also revealed earlier his lack of affection for the art of the female backing vocalist (god do u think he read the manifesto and started crying at some criticism. Have you ever read a British tabloid/music paper?). No-one needs an argument and I would have hoped those ideas such as the "manifesto" (for what exactly)? Would have been interpreted as the small parcel of semi humorous nonsense not as an actual manifesto that it appears one or two others appear to want to create for the digest. If I can laugh at being beaten up twice at the age of eleven by skinheads for foolishly trying to create the telekon look then a few people can take it a bit easy at such "light" postings as the "manifesto". Thanks for the time and lets the enjoy the chance to revel in the Numan revival, we all deserve it.
