I hoped that the "Lycra" mix from the original 12" release would be used, but I have a feeling that it is the "Digi" mix that seems to crop everywhere else. Is there anyone out there in Numan land who can shed more light on the subject? I don't have the "Lycra" mix on vinyl, so I can't compare all the versions. And where's "1999"? A few digests ago, there was mention of the possibility of extra Babylon CD's appearing to cover all the missed remixes, and even (dare I say it?) collaboration material (R*di* H**rt, B*ll Sh*rpe, R*bert P*lmer, etc). Are there any plans afoot in this department, anyone? (Derek? Matthew?). I would also just like to add my brief (but heartfelt) thoughts on the following: - The re-issue of the "Berserker" CD should have been the original vinyl version of the album, as the extended version has already been covered. - When "The Fury" is finally re-issued, please make it a double CD, including the short AND extended versions of the album. Or perhaps have both versions available simultaneously, but one only via the fan club and the other on general release. In my case, I already have the original CD issue of "Fury", but I would also like the extended version on CD (you see?). AND FINALLY (honest): Why put "Exile" back over 6 months?! I can see why Castle might not want to confuse us "simple punters" by having 2 different Numan releases close together. But 6 months is pushing it a bit! I agree with Colin Edwards (Digest #175) about putting the "anonymous" Techno album back to September 1996 instead! TO CONCLUDE (I know, I know...): I'm a little puzzled as to why Gary is suddenly going for this record deal. I'm sure he said a short while ago that he preferred to be independant after his IRS experiences. He's not even signed to Castle yet, and their influence has already had a detrimental effect by delaying the next album (from a fan's point of view). I could go on a fair bit yet, but I'll shut up for now. (Number of lines, and all that!). Oh yes -> excellent work, Matthew H, Derek L & others, by the way - great web-sites, digest, etc. ****************************************************** * Paul B., Harrogate, England [no sig. yet - sorry] * ****************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 1995 11:37:20 +0000 (GMT) From: Andy Subject: To: numan@cs.uwp.edu For those of you who have expressed an interest in my tape, The ful track listing is "A question Of Faith","My Shadow In Vain","Blue Eyes","Down In The Park",and "Berserker". FoxVoxx subscribers will have read Al Crawford's recent post, talking about old Ultravox/Visage songs: >I think the most re-used songs of the lot, >though, has to be "Fade To >Grey". Steve Strange *still* seems to be making >a living out of it, Ure's >performed it solo in the past, Chris Payne >recorded a version of it with >his band Big Noise UK. Does anyone know what material Chris put out with this band, or what any other band members have done since working with Gary? (Please mail me direct if you think this is getting too far off the Numan track). I joined the digest about six months ago, and have only just worked up the nerve to send an introductory message to it. So here goes. I've been a Numan fan for about three years, ever since another digest member (good ol' Joey Lindstrom) introduced me to his music one night. I was hooked; the next day, I went out and bought Exhibition, and I suffered through with that particular set of albums for a while. I've got various tapes of Numan material, all of which reside in my car's tape deck for at least one day a week. Recently, I picked up Dark Light, and Here I Am, and I have ordered Sacrifice, which I have to say is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Aside from those, I have no other Numan albums. I'm deprived, but that's the case for most Canadian fans. (You should see some of the screwball looks I get when I ask for Gary Numan at record stores: "Gary *who*?!") I get mixed reactions from Gary's music. Some people are non-plussed, more people get violently ill when I play it. "This is pure and utter shit!" they'll scream, but I don't care - It's my music, I'll play it. Jokingly, I've been threatening to play Numan at various events if people aren't nice to me. You'd be amazed how many offers of free beer I find lately.. :-) Anyway, just my little introductory note to the digest. -- mike sugimoto sugimotl@cuug.ab.ca http://www.cuug.ab.ca:8001/~sugimotl "may contain strong language, controversial subject matter, nudity, love, jove, adventure, poetry, action and whatever else may be found in contemporary society." -alberta theatre projects disclaimer ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Nov 1995 13:56:09 -0500 From: aw592@freenet.carleton.ca (Scott Jordan) Subject: Hi There! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi all - I'm fairly new to the news group. I began letting Gary's music get a grip on me since I heard "Cars" on the radio back when it came out, here in Canada. My older brother played The Pleasure Principle and Replicas quite a bit, which peaked my curiosity. I must admit that I have been out of touch with Numan-music for quite a few years and hearing about this group has gotten me thinking I should get back into the swing.... My other interests in music are wide-ranging - Medieval, Mike Oldfield, Kraftwerk, Primitives, among others. I played drums for many years but have not touched a set now for about 8 years :( This group is great! Well, I talked to a girl named Meera about a possible Numan feature. It turns out that she is big Numan fan and wondered what happened to him. I was quck to tell her and quickly contacted Matt Holbrook and we all opened up a little dialogue. She has enterred Nu-Zone for the first time and was brought up to date on Gary. She is looking forward to getting the Dance compilation. I am trying to persuade her to run a Numan feature. Something tasetful and not another what ever happened to? or other Hasbeen crap. Since we have this dialogue going, I dont want to lose momentum. I would like to request all the subscribers who have Compuserve to contact RS Online. If we all get together to support Gary, we'll show them that there is a big, genuine requirement out there for a Gary feature. Please do the following: In Compuserve, hit GO Rolling Stone Online: Then it will take a minute for the graphics to come up. Go to the RS Forum button and click. You will then enter the forum. On the right, there is a menu. Click on the box with the white hand pointing to the papers. Then the forum menu will appear Scroll down to the ask the editor section and click on that. Then post your message to Meera@RSOnline You'll probably see some other messages, so feel free to chime in. Derek, If you could send a message giving Meera the Digest and Fan CLub demographic information, she'll definitely take it more seriously. I dont know if Meera is an editor herself or a liaison to the editors. Either way, well get the point across. I dont know if AOL or Genie can get RS Online. Im pretty new to this stuff. In addition, VH-1 has a section where you can send messages. I havent explored that area yet, but there is another opportunity. The address is http:\\www.VH1.com Lets see what happens. Thanks alot. This is terrific news for someone like me, who lives in an area where it is difficult and expensive to get U.S. currency changed over to pounds sterling. I would imagine there are other Numanoids in the same boat. On that note, if anyone out there is planning to place a sizable order from Numa, and will be exchanging currency to send out, please let me know because I would be interested in picking up a few items, and I would make it worth your while. I was PROBABLY a bit too lenient in my directives. i.e. giving people as much time as required to get it done. This gives people an EXCELLENT excuse to put it off (indefinitely)! I don't want this to start dragging into Christmas, 'cos if it does, then it WON'T get finished 'til next year (people get too many DISTRACTIONS over the Christmas period). How MUCH of the form you fill in is entirely OPTIONAL, but it would be APPRECIATED if people can get at least HALF of it covered. i.e. a top-130. This is still enough to give a good indication of the big picture (but again, the more you fill in, the better). Also, people who have addressed me privately and via the digest can expect to start getting responses from next week. I'm NOT ignoring you - just INCREDIBLY busy. DONALD PEDDER. His response to Ralph's question on God was on the mark. Gary's no nonsense reponse is it what makes being a fan worthwhile. I spent many hours thinking over his God lyrics. And I hope Gary continues to be himself and never never compromises his integrity. Parts of the response to that question sounded like lyrics to a song. Above and beyond the Prophecy lyrics that were given. Like most of you I have listened to the snippets on Nu-World and can't wait for Exile. bye bye ------------------------------ Date: 18 Nov 95 15:33:02 EST From: Andy Westwood <100771.653@compuserve.com> Subject: We'll show you a new God To: Numan Digest Hi all, I thought, after lurking shamedly for several months, that I'd finally put finger to keyboard and mail the digest. Reading through Gary's answers about religion and God, etc, it's pretty obvious that he feels strongly about the subject. I wondered if anyone *is* offended or dismayed by Gary's strong distaste for religious faith - I'm pretty sure there would be only a few of us who were. I'm no psychologist, but I'd be willing to bet that statistically Numan fans are pretty much an atheist bunch anyway. To me it seems to go hand in hand with what most of us liked about Numan's music to begin with, i.e. the stark stories of a doom-laden future world (AFE, DITP), the power of man to make life (My Love is a Liquid, Metal) and the corruption of innocence (She's Got Claws, Complex etc.) - none of this suggests the optimism of someone with strong religious beliefs. I myself am strongly atheist and I'd suggest that my love of machines and machine-music, in the power of man to create his own destiny, isn't incompatible with that (lack of) belief. If *I* am offending anyone, I'm sorry. But, without turning the digest into a never-ending argument on the rights and wrongs of christianity (or any religion for that matter), I think it would be interesting to hear what other digesters think about Gary's stance and his use of his music to convey those feelings. Is Gary right to think that people might turn away from him because of this? Bought HUMAN a few weeks ago now and I must disgree with the few who have thought it a disappointment after Sacrifice. I have often thought Gary's instrumentals are amongst his best work. It seems to me that Sacrifice benefitted from Gary's work on the horror film sound track, forcing him to draw out the dark side in his writing. The Unborn clips on Human, to me, show just how powerfully Gary and Mike can use electronics to bring out those feelings of dread in the listener. Try listening through 'phones in a dark room! I must say also that the lack of wailing guitar and female vox make Human all the better, IMHO. Must be over 40 lines, so I'll disappear back into the ether for a while. Cheers, Andy. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
