The simple reason is that Gary always has to do a tour immediately after the launch of an album. With no media support, he has to do his own work. And the Numan friendly media will probably not be interested unless a tour is going on. Gary may well tour in the Autumn - hence the delay until then. Personally, I expect Exile late October and a tour in November. Another thing that all of you underestimate is how much time this Internet thing is taking. I told Gary before NuWorld went live that he would be spending all hours changing it. This is my experience. Once you start, you can see nothing but inconsistencies and mistakes. The regular feedback also spurs you into doing more. Now NuWorld is live, Gary is spending day and night on the project. There are lots of things to change and problems to sort out as incompatibilities emerge. The volume of feedback also takes a while to get through. To be honest, I doubt if Exile is getting much done on it at all. Gary is very grateful for all the feedback coming in. But, he is having to deal with some rather strange comments. He has asked me to post the following piece of feedback plus his lengthy reply: >"Looking at the site, I see: > >NuWORLD needs the Netscape 1.12 browser. > >Well, since I can't run Netscape on my Mac, I suppose that's me >out. Oh well. Does Gary know the site's incompatible with 30%+ >of the web browsers out there? Seems like a problem to me." And Gary's reply: ================================================================= As I understand these things Netscape will run on virtually any Mac, it certainly runs on all the Macs I've tried. I have a Quadra 650, not a PowerMac or anything massively high tech and it works fine here and at County Internet who host the site. It's clearly impossible to test it on every piece of hardware and software available and the infinite number of connection variations that are possible. The index page of NuWORLD does already list the versions of Netscape that are reasonably problem free for the Mac AND for the PC, including the new Mac version 2.0b2, so people are well informed as to what is best to use. It is also not uncommon for a browser to be specified on the index page in an attempt to give people clear guidance as to how best to view the site. I see my Netscape message, situated under the welcome on the NuWORLD index, as simply a helpful hint not a bloody order. It would also seem to me to have been a few minutes well spent if this man had tried to look at it anyway with whatever browser he is using to see just what he could get, but that's another argument altogether I suppose. Also, I would like to point out that I have a link almost at the top of the NuWORLD index page that can take a viewer to the Netscape site where they can download, for free, a suitable version of the Netscape browser. It all seems fairly simple, and helpful, to me. Finally, I would like to say that this piece of feedback seems to be slightly sarcastic, somewhat condescending and completely unhelpful. I've spent, and am currently spending, a huge amount of time and effort on this thing, the response has been tremendous and the feedback positive and helpful. Already I've made countless changes to it, some tiny some big, but all because I want the site to be what the majority of fans are looking for. I obviously can't please everybody with every part of it but that would be an unrealistic expectation. My enormous thanks to the many who have helped with good and constructive feedback in the development of this test site. And remember Mr Smartarse it is just a TEST site at the moment, and I am very much a beginner at all of this. ================================================================= So there you have it. Keep up the feedback - but keep it sensible. And remember the Exile will be better for being a few months later than originally planned. Are there any plans afoot in this department, anyone? >(Derek? Matthew?). I will be posting about this soon. Gary has said he never wants to have anything to do with the Radio Heart material ever again. And because he is restricting this series to his own material, collaborations are off the radar. It would require enormous effort and additional expense to get permission to use those tracks anyway. He is using what he has at his immediate disposal. >I would also just like to add my brief (but heartfelt) thoughts on >the following: > >- The re-issue of the "Berserker" CD should have been the original vinyl >version of the album, as the extended version has already been covered. For UK FC members only that was. I am in discussion with Gary about the possibility of a vinyl LP version CD sometime in the future, and may put it to a vote on the Digest as he is interesed in doing what people want but doesn't want to be seen to be milking fans. >- When "The Fury" is finally re-issued, please make it a double CD, >including the short AND extended versions of the album. I agree with Colin Edwards (Digest #175) about putting the >"anonymous" Techno album back to September 1996 instead! It is a difficult situation. Gary is wanting to be flexible. He is not in a very strong position when it comes to record deals. He cannot dictate his terms because the label can just walk away. >TO CONCLUDE (I know, I know...): I'm a little puzzled as to why Gary >is suddenly going for this record deal. I came to discover Numan, like most other Americans, by hearing 'Cars' on the radio. I loved science fiction, synthesized music, and such as a teenager, so I really thought 'Cars' was cool. I had never heard anything like it. At one time, I had collected all of Gary's major releases from _Tubeway Army_ up to _New Anger_. Now, all I have are _Replicas_ and _Best Of 78-83_. I play keyboards a little, and also play the drums. I play on the worship team at my church, in fact! I have never had opportunity to see Gary live in concert. Over the years, I have lost touch with him and his music, although at one time, a lot of my identity was tied up in Numan (and also Ultravox and John Foxx). Through Gary, I discovered Ultravox, Visage, and John Foxx. Foxx is now a favorite of mine. And it is odd, that, though he influenced Numan at the beginning, Foxx seems to have left the agnostic arena in favor of a Catholic/Christian worldview. After reading Gary's response to the question about God, it seems clear that he has only plunged ever deeper into this "pit" of believing that there is no God. Andy Westwood made a few interesting comments in light of Gary's response: > I wondered if anyone *is* offended or dismayed by Gary's strong > distaste for religious faith - I'm pretty sure there would be only a few of us > who were. I'm no psychologist, but I'd be willing to bet that statistically > Numan fans are pretty much an atheist bunch anyway. To me it seems to go hand in > hand with what most of us liked about Numan's music to begin with, i.e. the > stark stories of a doom-laden future world (AFE, DITP), the power of man to make > life (My Love is a Liquid, Metal) and the corruption of innocence (She's Got > Claws, Complex etc.) - none of this suggests the optimism of someone with strong > religious beliefs. I myself am strongly atheist and I'd suggest that my love of > machines and machine-music, in the power of man to create his own destiny, isn't > incompatible with that (lack of) belief. This seems reasonable to assert that the 'power of man to make life' through machines can be an atheistic point of view. In case, you haven't guessed, I am a Christian. Not only your basic Christian, though - a committed person willing to put my life on the line for Christ and His Kingdom. > If *I* am offending anyone, I'm sorry. But, without turning the digest into a > never-ending argument on the rights and wrongs of christianity (or any religion > for that matter), I think it would be interesting to hear what other digesters > think about Gary's stance and his use of his music to convey those feelings. Is > Gary right to think that people might turn away from him because of this? I am not offended. I just really feel for Gary. I can feel the darkness in him as he expresses himself, and it makes me fear for his soul. I have not bought any Numan release since _New Anger_, mainly because the lyrical content has grown very offensive to me. I believe that songs reveal the deepest parts of a song writer's heart, so it is only reasonable that Gary would express his anti-religious beliefs through his music. I disagree about Gary's "God". I have experienced Him personally, and know Him as a Father, Friend, and Companion. He is simply above our ability to understand. It's OK to reason or ask questions, but don't be surprised if God does not fit into the box you attempt to make for Him. I have "turned away" from Gary only in that I limit the amount of his music that I listen to. I have not turned away from the man himself. In fact, I am even now considering question for him in next month's digest. I hope this isn't too long of a post... (Well, only because I've been busy doing other things). My history: I bought a copy of "Tubeway Army" back in 1979 but every Numan album since then was a disappointment: no frontal guitar attack. I only purchased "Dance" (being a fan of Nick Karn & Nash the Slash). College days, not much money & all music purchases were made at my own risk -- radio airplay? Ha! Not in these parts (Portland Oregon). So I missed the "middle years". I was in a Tower Records store while visiting my brother-in-law in Washington DC back in 1991. Numan is his favorite. They had Asylum 1 & 2 -- and I could finally afford it. It really makes a difference having the song lyrics -- damn! what an excellent poet/lyricist. Now I really enjoy his "middle-period," (with a sound similar to Japan). I've never seen him live & don't consider myself a collector but I'm up to 18 CDs & 6 CD singles & have the following Numan CDs available for trading to other fans (these are duplicates, so I hope to trade very reasonably :)) If not traded they will be used to convert new fans! + A question of faith [new, sealed cd5] + Skin Mechanic + New Anger + Isolate + Outland + Here I Am -compilation + Gary Numan -compilation issued by Reciever records + Another compilation disc I'm not a member of any fan club (yet) mostly because all my favorite bands are British (Eno, Wire, Wolfgang Press, PWEI, Cabaret Voltaire, etc. with few exceptions such as Tuxedomoon) & I really avoid international currency exchange & shipping! Neil Maietta, who runs Alta Mira, is a very nice guy, polite and thorough but also brutally honest: when he runs pre-orders, he's careful to point out that he's at the mercy of his distributors and quotes their delivery dates faithfully but can't promise anything on his own authority. With that in mind, he's announced a December release date for the CD and is taking orders at $24.00 apiece. You may be able to do better yourself elsewhere, but these days I rely on Neil for all my Numan needs since I know I can count on him. The only thing he couldn't find me was a proper 13-track M+S Extended CD (which I still need, BTW). You can email Neil at AMCYBER1@AOL.COM and tell him Mike sent you from Numanews. I have an immense amount of respect and (dare I say) love for Gary's music. I respect and admire Gary very much. His music has meant a lot to me, and in some way (as with many Numanoids I expect) feel conected to him. Being a Christian, and having a very strong relationship with Whom I believe in is above all most important to me, and I suppose many would think that I should be taken a-back by Gary's comments. But why? Gary is entitled to his own beliefs, and I respect that. Just because I may not agree with all that he had to say should not terminate my interest in him and his music; should it? Besides, it would be exactly what most people would expect and therefore pigeonhole anything I say into the "fanatical zealot" category and diminish anything important I may feel I need to say. I personally have a problem with religion. I do not like religion. I believe that religion is man's attempt to control and confine God to his (man's) image and idea of what God should be. Religion, IMHO is exactly the reason why people, and perhaps Gary have such a hard time with believing in God. Man's ancient and distorted view of what God is and who he is has led to many disasterous events- the inquisition, witch burnings, the Crusades, etc..... I remember friends of mine, who were also Christians, thought they liked Depeche Mode's "Blasphemous Roumors" until they realized the line was God and his odd and mysterious ways. I told them that the statement was very valid, and yet the song itself revealed so much truth, that they and perhaps even Depeche Mode themselves, were unaware of. In my opinion, God wants us to question him. He wants us to believe in him and love him, but only because we chose to. And not because we are forced to. That means we have to question him, and search for the answers. I have questioned my own faith many, many times because of the crap I've seen and experienced in my own life. But I always believed that it was God himself that led the way, and if I was responsive to him and his spirit, would discover new things about Him and myself through the lessons I learned. The hard way. So why should I, or any other Christian turn our backs on Gary Numan or any other individual who choses (with their wonderful gift of free choice) not to believe what I believe? Why should we perpetuate hate and distrust? I don't plan to preach or cram anything down anyone's throats ( I also dislike that) so all I will say is this...If anyone is interested in chatting more about what I believe, I will be happy to exchange email (see below)with them. I am sure that I'll learn many new things and perspectives through the process. Well, that's it in a nutshell. I wish Gary all the Best, and who knows...one day he may or may not change his mind. Either way, I still like him and his music. Talk to you all soon. JORJA FULLERTON To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Yo fellow Numanoids! I'm new to the Net and to the digest, and must say that I am truly honored to be here. I've just finished reading all of the back issues (yes, this took weeks!) and I especially enjoyed the intros. Anyway, "here I am": My name is Jorja Fullerton (that's pronounced just like Georgia) and I have been a Numanoid since 1979. It was the first week of my senior year at college (you do the math) that I too first heard Cars on the radio. Because of its uniqueness I instantly fell in love with the song (and to this day that opening musical "wawawawawawa.." still does something to me). It was so amazingly different than the other crap they played in the 70's. Because of it, I plunged head first into the, then new, new-wave scene. I immediately ran out to buy the Pleasure Principle, and within the next few weeks also bought Replicas and Tubeway Army. I have been a loyal fan ever since. I feel extremely lucky to have seen at least one live show at a small club in Cincinnatti in 1982 (the I Assassin tour). I would really love to go to England for the '96 Tour, but once again, Reality gets in the way of my Dreams. I can only hope that (someday) Gary Numan will grace America with his presence again. What draws me to Numan's music is definately two things. 1) That unique voice. It has that wonderful rare quality that just rubs me the right way. Few posess it. Something that I can only describe to my friends as "the voice thing". 2) The music. Soothing... intense... like a steamy cup of really good coffee. It's more than the way it sounds, it's the way it makes me FEEL. That ethereal synth music, the driving beat, the darkness, the emotion, it's what I crave after I come home from a particulary crappy day at work. IT IS MY SANITY! I gain a certain strength from Numan's music. It is almost...uplifting. What I most admire is Gary's ability to not just survive, but to thrive. To never be afraid to try new things or ever stop trying. And as long as he wants to produce music (whatever HE wants), I will listen. Granted I'm not going to love everything, but who does with anything? I will always be grateful to Gary for being such an intregal part of my life. And I hope he chooses to continue in the music business for many years to come. I pride myself in my diverse music collection and listen to everything from Ray Charles to Oingo Boingo. Recently, I've been listening to The Proclaimers, Bryan Ferry, Joan Osborne, Ted Hawkings, and Tom Waits, but my favorites (besides Numan of course) are Stan Ridgway/Drywall, Robyn Hitchcock, Nick Cave, Johnny Clegg, Peter Gabriel, David Byrne and Lyle Lovett. (p.s: to the 2 other people I've seen mention Stanard as a favorite in their intros. pls E-mail me, I have questions..) A BIG thanks to Derek (and Dave) for doing this digest. What you are doing here is great and much appreciated. I also keep close tabs on the other web pages (all fabulous!). Gary Numan does have the best and most loyal fans in the business. Is Gary right to think that people might turn away from him because of this? I think this is an interesting aspect of Gary's most recent work (his stance on religion), although discussing it COULD conceivably turn into a never-ending argument on Christianity, etc. Some comparisons have been made between Gary and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, whose success is partially based on Trent's angst-ridden relationship with God as expoused in his lyrics. People are polarized when the subject of Christianity is brought up, and Gary is quite right to think that anti-religious sentiments could turn some people off when they hear some of his songs. However, whereas I think Reznor's lyrics are designed specifically to "press some people's buttons", Gary's lyrics seem to be more thought-out, more genuine...more credible. Gary is one of the few lyricists that I've heard that I actually believe is always saying what he means (top of the list being Roger Waters). Tony R. MAN MY FINGERS ARE SORE! :-) But... I've ran smack up against a brick wall now - I've exhausted my lyric supply, but I'm still more than 70 songs short. So, I'm turning to you. The following is a list of songs that I still need lyrics for. I realize that in some cases lyrics aren't available (yet) - for example, "This House Is Cold". Others will be nearly impossible to duplicate (ie: the "Live At The Roxy" stuff). The remainder tends to be stuff I simply don't have and thus don't have access to the lyrics, and I've been unable to locate them elsewhere on the internet. So after you look over the list, could you please: 1) Send me any lyrics on the list if you ALREADY have them in text form (ie: on a disk drive somewhere, already-typed-in) 2) LET ME KNOW if you have some lyrics that need to be typed in and if you are also willing to do so. Please don't just go ahead and type them in - if there's more than one volunteer, it'd be best to try to even the load (no sense in five of you typing in lyrics to the same song, after all) 3) LET ME KNOW of any songs on the list that are very definitely instrumental or ad-libbed (I've got all the other information such as label, release date, etc.) - I can just fill out a form for these and drop them from the to-do list. Definite "needy" areas include the Bill Sharpe collaboration album, the Babylon series, most of the Numa b-sides, Radial Pair, and the Radio Heart/Dadadang stuff - none of which I have in my collection (yet). If you've got 'em, I need your help! I realize that I'm asking a lot, but this isn't just for me - this is for all of us. There are 220 songs online now, available to anybody, and I've done that all by myself. I'd sure appreciate a hand in raising that number significantly. And hey, I'll even credit you on-screen. :-) You can view the full list online at http://www.netway.ab.ca/numanoid/ lyrics/tracks.html Here's the list of songs I do not have any lyrics for: Absolution Adrenalin All Across The Nation Anthem Asylum Asylum 2 Boys Breathe In Emotion Bunch Of Stiffs Change Your Mind Chaser 1 Children Cloud Dancing Cold House Cry Baby (Cry) Dark Mountain Dark Rain Don't Be A Dummy Empty Bed, Empty Heart Faces Fadeout 1930 (I coulda swore I had this one somewhere!) Funeral Hanoi Here Am I I Don't Believe I'm A Poseur I'm On Automatic Ice House In A Glasshouse Kiss Me And Die Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) London Times Love Is The Doctor Love Like A Ghost Machine Heart Me, My Head Mission Mistasax 1 Mistasax 2 Motherless Faces (or whatever it's called) Nightlife No More Lies No Shelter Oceans On Broadway (who originally recorded this anyways? That might help me...) Play Like God Puppets Pure St Joy Radio Heart Red Sky Rip It Up River Rumour Sexomania Shame She Cries Some New Game Survival (this is instrumental on "Skin Mechanic", how 'bout the original?) The Fear The Hauntings This House Is Cold (yeah, yeah, I know - no lyrics available) This Ship Comes Apart Tread Careful Tribal Turn Off The World Virus Voices Waiting We Need It Welcome To Love Whisper Of Truth White Light - White Heat Wonder Eye (I Wonder) You Don't Know Me Basically, if it ain't on this list, then it *IS* in the database... for which great heaping gobs of credit go to Matthew Holbrook, who gave me an excellent head start in this endeavour (and to whom I returned the favour in a very very small way, by pointing out one song he lacked in his list). The "search engine" is crude but effective - it's just a single web page with lots of indexes. A better search engine is on the horizon, as is an album-by-album (studios, lives, compilations) listing with cross-links to individual lyric forms. I might even get energetic and list single releases as well (with cross-links to lyrics). For all this, I'll be relying heavily on Dave Datta's excellent discography (thanks Dave!) Your assistance would be valuable and GREATLY appreciated. /--------------------------------------------------------- / Joey Lindstrom / numanoid@netway.ab.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 10:36:45 GMT -0500 From: "Dan Coffeyx3685" Subject: NUMAN UNPLUGGED To: numan@cs.uwp.edu On the subject of this unplugged album, i think all of us netters should really consider campaigning for this...Numan's music is very very compatible to the unplugged medium...if you don't think so, just listen to Jo the Waiter from the Dark Light CD! Amazing...Gary could also pull out other acoustic-type rarities such as The Life Machine, My Love is A Liquid, and imagine Complex and Cars acoustic...it would be a revolutionary album....to say the least...Since Gary left it up to the fans to decide...does anyone out there agree with me? or am i way off base here? dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 1995 21:04:18 PST From: Matthew Holbrook Subject: Photo request To: numan@cs.uwp.edu There is going to be a convention-style event held in the UK in May. More details soon. One of the things we are planning for this is an exhibition of fan concert photos. I'm sure plenty of you out there of got such items. Those prepared to make a set for us will get reduced price admission to the event and if I feature them in NU-Zone, a credit there as well. I will even pass some on to Gary. So, plese get in touch if you can help. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html machman@county.net ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Nov 1995 15:45:45 EST From: "Kay Teel" Subject: We'll show you a new God To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Andy Westwood asked: > But, without turning the digest into a never-ending argument > on the rights and wrongs of christianity (or any religion > for that matter), I think it would be interesting to hear what > other digesters think about Gary's stance and his use of his > music to convey those feelings. Is Gary right to think that > people might turn away from him because of this? Well, I wasn't going to say anything, but I am a Christian, and I was very interested in reading Gary's reply. It was no surprise, of course, because I think his lyrics on this subject are pretty plain. But, no, I'm not offended at all, because I happen to think everyone is entitled to their own belief systems, even if it non-belief. And far from being turned off by his lyrics about this, I'm fascinated by them, because they raise some strong questions and tend to be (imho!) better written than some of the other stuff... Of course, I can only speak for myself, and I don't practice any organized religion since to me belief is on the individual's level. I do know someone whose fundamentalist parents threw out all her Numan (and Smiths) records and forbade her from listening to any more of that "death music." --Kay Teel teel@is.nyu.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Nov 1995 12:17:18 -0700 (MST) From: Kim McCleskey Subject: which live album is this? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi. I've been lurking here for quite a while, and now I finally have a question for you all. A few years ago (1989 to be exact), the radio station that I work at (a college station) got some MC 900 Foot Jesus cassettes as giveaways. I got one and never gave it a second thought until a couple of weeks later when the music director told me that there had been a mixup at the record company and that they had accidentally put a Gary Numan live album on the tapes instead of MC 900 Ft. Jesus. Now, my question is, what album is this? I have no idea. Neither of the discographies I've looked up have track listings for the albums, just the titles. Anyway, like I said, I got the album in 1989. It is live, and here is the track listing: New Anger(?) Creatures Are Friends Electric? ? (I have no idea) We Are Glass I Die, You Die ? (also no clue) Call Out the Dogs Cars ? (no idea) Down in the Park I'd really like to get this on disk if I could, since promo cassettes are known for being extremely poor quality. You can tell where my weaknesses lie as far as Gary Numan goes. I was really into his stuff up through _The Fury_ and then I just got distracted. But anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
