To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi, folks..I swear not to discuss God. In the last Digest, Gary's cover of "1999" on the "Skin Game" CD5 was mentioned. Well, it's not on my copy! (eek.) Does anyone have an extra copy of the aforementioned disc to sell a fellow Numanoid? NuWorld ROCKS. Does anyone know what essentially motivated Gary to cover Prince on M+S? I always thought it was odd since Prince and Gary are the same age and Gary's music has been at least as relevant to 80's and 90's music as Prince's. I'd say Prince owes Gary a cover or two :) And I was going to ask Gary if he'd ever met and talked with Brian Eno. I just remember 15 years ago in an interview where Gary said he never listened to Eno's music until people started comparing it to his own, and he said something like he'd have to meet Eno before he could really comment on the man much. Thanks in advance for these answers. Gary is *very* interested in what we want to hear from him on his next tour so let us take advantage of this and be able to say "I picked that one!". So sit back, think real hard and make your top 30 list. Then send it to Scorbie@aol.com Yes, the one that Gary bashed the hell out of last week! Much to my well being we sorted it out but I won't bore you with the details except to say that he reacted negitively to my Q because of his dealings in the past with the press. He felt I was attacking him unjustly when I really wasn't. I wasn't pointing my finger at him for the "head banging" but saying "hey? where'd that come from?" as a loyal subject. It's *very* hard to express sentiment in an e-mail message. Anyway, what do you want to hear? Let's make a difference! Pull out those old records, study those liner notes and make your list. I would personally suggest avoiding the ones we've heard over and over like: Are 'Friends' Electric - Cars - I Die: You Die - Down in the Park - We Are Glass etc..... only because it seems most of us have been soooo thrilled with his track selection of late that we should dig up more that he's never performed live before. Things like: 'Face to Face' or 'The Fear'. But in the end it's up to you. Whatever you like, of course. And please make nice colomns and number your selections so it's easy to read when I print it out! Remember, Gary asked for this. It's not for fun. It's for the next tour!!!!!!!!! Make your top 30 now! Subj: Exile Tour Poll To: Scorbie@aol.com (Aaron Hannum) "There is no god so pray to Gary"---------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Nov 1995 01:11:56 -0500 From: ultravox@pb.net (Fred L. Holtz, Ph.D) Subject: God To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi All! I agree that this is not the best forum for discussing God, however, I wanted to contribute my own "40 Lines". Brief Pre-amble: I have been a huge Numan fan forever and have everything. Still get a chill from the opening bars of cars. Gary's views will not deter my interest in his older material. Luckily, I do not turn to famous musicians for my personal ideology! On to God, some observations. Allow me a brief moment to comment on Gary's comments from a modern Judaic perspective. That horrific incident of the murdered child in the UK is an abomination. As is a recent case in the US where a child was cut out of the womb of a murdered woman. As were over one million infants and children killed, gassed, and shot in the mouth after being promised lolipops during the Holocaust. Women were shot while nursing their infants. What kind of God would allow all this? Of all people, Jews have perhaps asked "Where was God?" the most. There is a simple answer: God did not murder all those people. God did not torture that young child in the UK. PEOPLE Did. God has provided some VERY good basic ideas on how to live in peace, how to accomodate strangers, how to perform good deeds. But unless we have free will, there is no "good" and "bad". Horrific events call our attention to the fact that there is LOTS more to be done to make ourselves and this world more "God-like". There are two choices: 1) Believe there is no God, get sullen, nihilistic, and depressed, or 2) Believe there IS a God, that religion has some good ideas that are sometimes used to bad ends by bad people, and that there is a lot of work WE have to do to improve the world. Personally, I do not like the content of my favourite musicians lyrics of late. I find no reason to reject a religious tradition that represents good deeds, caring for the unfortunate, and viewing the world optimistically. My appologies for straying from the subject of Gary's music. A "Devoted" fan. Fred L. Holtz, Ph.D. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 95 10:11:26 -0400 From: jon.lester@index.com Subject: God, Unplugged To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Just a couple quick thoughts on the religion and unplugged album threads. Gary's views on religion as expressed in his lyrics and recent comments are consistent with his straight-up candor, his refreshing knack for getting right to the heart of the matter with his expression. It's good to see our more overtly religious members take it well, too (it would actually be un-Christian to let it be cause for division). Rather than go on about it myself, let me just say that recently I came across Thomas Paine's classic _The Age of Reason_, published exactly 200 years ago yet very modern-sounding in its delivery. Everyone should read it; Gary might like it too. As for the unplugged album: I can think of about two dozen songs that would carry over rather well and more that could be adapted without much deviation. Actually, I think he could do an "Austin City Limits" performance and not be out of character for that sort of thing. I think maybe the word "unplugged" shouldn't be followed too literally; something like that new Rolling Stones album of rehearsals and small club performances would go over well also. Whatever it evolves into, I just hope Gary feels comfortable and natural about the whole thing and doesn't worry too much about what others think it ought to be. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Howdy folks, delurking for a brief moment to comment on a few things. On the whole religion issue: I'm not a Christian. Never will be. I'm a Pagan, always have been, always will be. To be honest, I never really thought much about Gary's thought on religion except "wow, that's incredibly intense". I know, it sounds trite, but I can only respect the man for writing of his beliefs... Jorja: hey, you're absolutely right about 'the voice thing'... listening to Dance the other day (B.Banquet dbls), and as I was looking over the liner notes--the ones that aren't in the Dance album--and I thought to myself"he's very good looking". AAACCCKKK!!!!! Somehow I manage to miss picking up one of the 12" singles for M&S that had extra live tracks on it. It is the following: Machine & Soul (Mix 1) Soul Protection Confession >From Russia Infected (The last three tracks were recorded live in Blackburn at King Georges Hall in October 1991.) Does anyone know of an extra copy still floating around? Or perhaps someone bought two and is willing to part with one of them? Is so, PLEASE let me know. Thanks! Mike Michael M. Gibson" Subject: Numan and God/Human To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings! Since everyone is posting their oppinions, I'd like to post mine. I would like to comment that I am very intrigued with Gary's view on God and I've always wondered what he felt about religion/God considering his curious lyrics. I don't feel people should turn their backs on Gary just because he feels the way he does. I agree with most people in that people are entitled to their own beliefs and I totally respect Gary and love his work. I can understand if he feels that what he has said might offend people, since religion is such a touchy subject. I can agree with Gary on a few things, but I do believe their is a God; however, I don't believe in God the way most people believe in God. I don't worship God, but I have faith in God from within, by following my inner light. So, I'm not part of any religion and my beliefs are rather ambient and I want them to remain that way so I don't polarize on any particular idea and can remain neutral. I've chosen to believe this way since I can see what religions have done to humanity over the centuries. I recently bought Human and I feel it is an excellent piece of work. I've noticed that over the course of Gary's work, he tends to do very well with non-vocal work and I feel that a lot of those ideas on the CD can be worked on, furthered and turned into real pieces! I'm a fan from the early days. Collected all I could, and even painted my car with the Tubeway Army face! (picture will be posted to a web site if requested). However things have changed. I still like the music, but I have job, house, family that come first! I will sell ALL my vinyl collection (I only have vinyl!). It's got rarities, foriegn imports, bootlegs, pictures disks, coloured disks etc. Virtually everything upto about 87 (Berserker time?). All Are in protective sleeving. Some have never been played, as I have duplicates! I'll even throw in the fan club mags. photographs, posters(loft?) etc. Q.1 Is there a list that shows their worth? (what price I should ask for). Q.2 Anyone want the lot! Saves me being left with the regular black vinyl. I'll prepare a list soon. PS. I'm in the south of London (UK). PPS. My handicapped son needs my money now - so please try to be generous. (Though I'll take 50p rather than none at all!). ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
