To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Finally got _Human_ (my record dealer is slow, but oh so dependable). I am VERY impressed. I have always loved Gary's slow pieces and intros, so this is a dream come true. I have mentioned this before, but _Human_ reaffirms my belief that Patrick O'Hearn (former Missing Persons bassist) listens to Numan. A lot of his solo work (especially the soundtrack to the movie _White Sands_) has the same feel as _Human_, right down to the fretless bass sliding in and out of the synthesizers. Great stuff! "1999" is on the "Machine & Soul" Part 2 CD5 not the "Skin Game" CD5. I am sure someone will point this out in the next Digest. I was using my head rather than a printout of the discography or the disc in question for my source. "Skin Game' has the other Prince cover, "U Got the Look". There is only one version of the "Skin Game" CD5. M&S is the only CD5 that Gary has released with two parts with different tracks. "Asolution" comes in a regular or picture CD5 but the songs are the same on the two discs. Sorry to have created any anxiety that you were missing something. I will give a full write-up sometime later. I'm not doing it now because I want there to be enough bandwidth left for talk about God, lurkers, the definition of edits and remixes and why it is OK to rip off songs. So, all I'll offer now is the latest news. - Berserker will be released on 4 December. It is being distributed by Pinnacle and has the attributes I described a few weeks ago. - Milton Keynes looks like being the area to step into the slot left by Hammersmith on the next tour. - Three albums are due between January amd March 1996. Another good reason for pushing Exile back. The first is Premium Cuts - all 15 of Gary's Beggars Banquet A Sides in re-mastered style. This comes out on 29 January. There probably won't be a single. February sees the Beggars Banquet tribute album. This will include Numan covers by many famous bands. There may be a single. Finally, the Castle Tchno-but-not-techno release appears on 4 March, with a single on 5 February. - The Carling Premium Lager advertisement will be hitting UK TV screens again from January. It will also be seen on UK cinema screens - from January to May, although only every other week. You should see from all this that 1996 could be one of the best ever years for Numan fans. I'll post some more when I think the space is available. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html machman@county.net ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Nov 1995 15:09:29 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Babylon 8 - a call for requests To: numan@cs.uwp.edu INTRO ----- Again, we have an opportunity to give Gary advice on what he should do release-wise. How many artists can you say that for? I think it only applies to a minority of subscribers and is not a long poll like the definitive Poll or a medium one like the Top 30 live Poll. So please bear with me. We should be thankful that Gary wants our input on his future plans. BABYLON 8 --------- Gary has indicated he is considering an 8th volume for the Babylon series. He would also like to please as many fans as possible with such a release while remaining true to his original idea for the series - i.e. a collection of interesting and hard to find songs. He has asked me to find out from the Digest what people would most like to see on an 8th volume. Gary considers this to be a series of his own material so, he is reluctant to use 'No Shelter'and 'New Thing From London Town' as they were written by others. However, he did say "If I am to go with an eighth CD I will need to look at all possibilities so it would be foolish to completely ignore things that the fans are particularly keen on". So if demand is there, NS and NTFLT might be candidates, despite the extra hassle it would create for Gary. What I'd like to do is get the opinions of those Subscribers buying or intending to buy the Babylon series. OK, so what might be on Babylon 8? With past help from Brian Hammond I list below Numa songs that have not seen CD excluding the collaborations, the 'Berserker' vinyl LP tracks and 'The Fury' extended mixes (I will be asking your opinions on the LP versus extended versions of those albums at another time). Additionally, I don't think Gary has the tapes for the IRS remixes of his tracks as he had nothing to do with them, so I am not including those. Neither have I included b-sides such as Wonder Eye, and 1999 which are available on Numa CD5s that are still in print and will be available through Gary's NuWORLD www site. I have not heard Babylon 5 & 6 yet so I am not sure which versions of 'Emotion', 'The Skin Game' and 'Machine and Soul' have been used but I am assuming they are the CD5 mixes. This is the list I have: SONGS ----- My Dying Machine Italian remix (came on 7" free with Numa compilation LP) My Dying Machine Italian remix instrumental No Shelter This Ship Comes Apart (long version from 12" - 7" version was used on vol 2) I Still Remember RSPCA 12" version (7" used on vol 3) New Thing from London Town 7" New Thing from London Town extended I Can't Stop 7" I Can't Stop extended 12" (10" Club mix used on vol 4) This is Love 7" Emotion (12" edit) The Skin Game lycra mix (from Skin Game 12") The Skin Game nu mix (Ibid) Machine And Soul (mix 1) from the 12" vol 1 Machine And Soul (mix 2) from the 12" vol 2 Soul Protection (live from "Machine And Soul" 12", volume 1) Confession (live - Ibid) >From Russia Infected (live - Ibid) Your Fascination (live from "Machine And Soul" 12", volume 2) UK 12" Outland (live - Ibid) Respect (live - Ibid) MY CHOICE --------- My choices would, without any restrictions, concentrate on the extended versions of tracks as any future singles collection will most likely have the 7" versions. This is what it would be: My Dying Machine Italian remix I Still Remember RSPCA 12" version No Shelter This Ship Comes Apart (long version) New Thing from London Town extended The Skin Game lycra mix Machine And Soul (mix 1) from the 12" vol 1 which would total about 40 mins which is more than for the other discs in the Babylon series. Gary has told me he can't find the Italian remix tapes, in which case I'd substitute the 'I Can't Stop' 12". Others may also not be possible due to lost or damaged tapes. But lets just consider all the aforementioned are available. That way, if there is a big demand for a song, it may make Gary Take further steps to locate the tapes. SEND ME YOUR OPINIONS --------------------- So, what would your choices be? Please email me with what you'd like to see from the list presented here and if you have any special requests from Gary's personal non-IRS catalogue. Use the word "Babylon" in the subject. Please don't post to the Digest. I will summarize and post at another time. I'll put a deadline of December 16 for you to get me the info. BABYLON AVAILABILITY WILL EXPAND -------------------------------- FYI the Babylon series will be available to all Digest members and others via NuWORLD. Gary also says that credit card transactions will be possible upon full launch of NuWORLD so there's no need to waste money on exchange fees at this point in time in order to get a sterling draft to them. Let's make this the last comment on the subject......... What am I talking about......well God and religion. Have you noticed how long the replies from the devout are compared to any other submissions? I implore Derek or whoever else he may get to edit the digest to filter out such submissions from now on. The specific incident Gary is referring to in A Question of Faith was extremely horrific, and although I am not a violent person, if it was one of my children that had been murdered so brutally I would have done anything to get revenge on the two boys of 12 (I think) who did it. At the time people wished to pray for the murderers as well as the victim. No further comment needed. I share Gary's views, I cannot relate to a God, and most people I have met who do, I would not describe as likeable people. One born-again Christian I unfortunately met in California, jumped backwards onto a balcony railing, nearly falling off. We all made a grab for him.......his reply was that if God meant him to fall he would fall!!!!!! How can such people be treated seriously. Remember most wars are over religion................ I absolutely agree with this point of view (Hi Jon!, btw. :-). People should at last have learned to accept and respect other people's points of view (and I notice that fortunately most of us do so). There are actually *MANY* people on earth who have been badly disappointed by religion and it's claims. And religion practiced by fanatics has killed lots of people throughout the whole history of mankind. So I think that, like I, as an atheist, respect religious people and their beliefs (as long as they aren't fanatics and respect other people's free wills), religious people should respect the atheist's points of view. And I also have friends who are religious but we never had any problems about our different points of view as we respect each other's attitudes. I received a vote this week which was a top-100. This is O.K., but IF this person could do another 22 songs (since he had only heard 244 of the songs), he could cover all of his ABOVE AVERAGE songs. This MAY sound like nit-picking, but I'll illustrate how much DIFFERENCE it can make. Firstly, I have made a slight change to the way I said I was gonna allocate points to the songs. I will explain MORE fully when the results come out (as to the reasons WHY I have done this), but what I am gonna be doing is making a person's No.1 vote worth 1000 points, the LAST song will be 0 points, and the songs in-between will have points allocated based on the resulting scale. i.e. If a person has heard 251 of the songs, then each POSITION on the vote will be worth 4 points (1000/250). This means an "average" song will get 500. The OTHER number to throw into the mix is the TOTAL no. of votes. At THIS stage it looks like there'll be 18 responses, but of course, that could go up OR down, depending on people's inclinations as we approach the end! I'll call it 20 people for the sake of easy numbers to work with. NOW, people have expressed concern about trying to decide between this song or that song when it comes down to the nitty-gritty. This REALLY doesn't MATTER! If you move a song up ONE place, you will add 4 points (approx.) to it's TOTAL points. Since there are (in this example) 19 other people voting, you are ONLY going to add (4/20) 0.2 points to it's final RATING (the average of all scores). Since there will be an AVERAGE gap BETWEEN songs of 4 points, 0.2 points is NOT likely to move it up or down a notch! SO, agonising over which song to put ahead of another is largely pointless. Now, on the OTHER hand, What about the situation that this email is aimed at? What happens,is that the songs that are ranked are given what I will call an ABSOLUTE ranking. The songs which AREN'T ranked (but HAVE been heard) will be given a GENERIC ranking. What THIS means is that if you have ranked 100 songs, and you've heard 250, the bottom 150 songs will ALL be given the points corresponding to a ranking of 175 (since you have NOT differentiated among them). IF you pull up shy of doing HALF of the songs you have heard, then SOME "above average" songs will end up with a "below average" rating. The generic rating is gonna be something slightly above 250 points. If you DO go that extra last bit so that ALL of your "above average" songs have been rated, those songs that you have NOW included will gain about 250 points to their TOTAL (going from the murky depths of 250 odd, to over 500). In the FINAL analysis, this will add (250/20) 12.5 points to it's AVERAGE! This is EQUIVALENT to 3 places!! And so THIS is WHY I was trying to encourage people to at LEAST get half of the form done. OBVIOUSLY I would PREFER that as MANY people as possible do the WHOLE lot, but FAILING that, if people who WERE gonna stop at 100, could just go the EXTRA distance to cover HALF of what they've heard, then the top-half of the FINAL results can TRULY be claimed to be DEFINITIVE (and only the lower reaches of the chart will be somewhat murky). A tip of this Canadian boy's toque to everyone involved. Everyone's going to place their own personal favorites in their list, and that's the way it should be. But, I'd like to do a little campaigning for one particular song - I hope to have as many of you add this little gem to your poll response as possible... and maybe we can put a definite stamp on this tour in doing so. It's a song that Gary co-wrote with Robert Palmer but has not, to my knowledge, been recorded by Gary (although he's listed as having shared keyboard duties with Jack Waldman on Palmer's version). The song is called "Style Kills". You can find it on "Addictions Vol. 1" or on "Maybe It's Live". The song has a very, very definite Numan feel to it and I'm amazed that Gary hasn't in fact recorded this song. While Palmer pulls off the vocals quite well, you can easily imagine Gary's voice fitting the song equally well, and probably even better. According to RP, "the song is about style without substance, the trivial veneer." It's a powerful, powerful song and I think we can safely say it's one that would definitely be a new one to Numan's concert-going fans. So when you fill out your Exile Poll ballot, please include this song on your list. /--------------------------------------------------------- / Joey Lindstrom / numanoid@netway.ab.ca ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Nov 1995 17:34:25 +0100 From: fw14@calvanet.calvacom.fr (Frank Wozniak) Subject: Une note d'introduction ! I would love to hear cars done in all strings. Cello and bass for the drone and bass and viola for the melody and of course violins for the wonderful string line. If it were with a small ensemble, he could emulate the older synth sounds with clarinet and flute. Boy that would be cool. Gary Numan and the London Symphony Orchestra, or some such thing.
