They were selling it for $21.49 which should be a good price to compare with other stores. Lou's stocks the best selection of Numan CDs I've seen in the US. They had all the BB 2CD reissues, Isolate, Here I am, several copies of Sacrifice, Absolution, Dark Light and White Noise plus the Dark Light EP. As I have the original Fan Club pressing I did not pick up this new release because I would like to know a few things first. If anyone can help, please email me. 1. What is the price in UK music stores? 2. Which company made the CD - most likely Mayking Records or Disctronics (check the inner rim of the CD). 3. If anyone gets a new copy and has the original UK Fan Club release, can you tell any difference in the sound quality. In some ways I don't like doing this because people may think I'm boasting etc. etc. But, the points here are important for Digest subscribers so here goes: Sunday 26 November - the day I was next meeting with Gary. The morning was cool and the ground slightly damp. I left home at just before 9:00 and was soon on the motorway. I had 110 miles ahead of me. There wasn't much traffic around and I made good time. Almost exactly on time, I pulled in at his parent's house just outside of Staines at 11:00. Gary suggested we go here as it's rather closer than where he lives. Gary's jeep was not on the drive, so I presumed he was not here yet. I tooted my horn to get someone to open the gate. Tony Webb came out and let me in and I parked in front of his garage. Also parked here were Gary's Corvette (now painted in black) and another sports car under wraps. Tony helped me carry in my books and laptop etc. Beryl was in the kitchen and I greeted her. Tony and Beryl then showed me their collection of sheds on the back garden - and where they are making space for a new Portakabin ready for all their merchandise. There was no space for Beryl's ornamental swans now :-( We then went to the lounge and had a good old Numan chat. The lounge has its walls lined with gold and silver discs for Gary's early albums. They're all here except for the gold disc for Telekon - that one sits in Outland Studio. An hour soon passed as we chatted about the Web sites, the Digest, fans etc. etc. Just after 12:00, Gary's jeep appeared at the Gate and Tony went out to let it in. Gary and Gemma then came in. I greeted them both and Gemma gave me a severe bashing for some of the things I said about her in her spot in NU-Zone. Gary was wearing a Sacrifice T Shirt a peaked black hat complete with aircraft badge on the front. He also showed off his new biker's coat. After some general chat we went up to Tony's office upstairs. This is one of the spare bedrooms and is lined with Numan posters - including a large picture of the Numan-sponsored racing car from the early 1980s. It is also filled with boxes of merchandise - including White Noise, Sacrifice and The Radial Pair. All the 1996 concert tickets were there ready to be sent out. We then had a look at Tony's new Power Mac, as well as the 8086 PC used for managing the Fan Club. We also had a look at the new Berserker CDs that had just come in. We talked about many other things - including the delayed Exile. Gary explained (once again) why it had been put back so much. Not only were the Castle deal and Internet work to blame, but also with three Numan-related albums coming out in January, February and March - most fans have not got unlimited funds and so will have to be selective about which of the four albums they go for. Just to recap, these three albums are the Beggars 15 Numan A Sides ("Premium Hits"), the Beggars tribute album ("Songs that have come in from the cold") and the Castle dance album ("Techno Army"). One of the other things we talked about was the famous Numan logo. I think Gary was a little put out that it had been used on the Digest T Shirt. He is creating one for NuWORLD and only found out that his logo had been used by reading a news story in NU- Zone. Still, at least he will now have to be creative with his own T Shirt! Anyway, he told me where the Numan logo came from. It was created at the time of the Bombers single. This had a picture of the members of Tubeway Army on the front, with Gary in the foreground. Gary was around a mate's house and he sketched Gary's face from that single. And that sketch became the Numan logo. It has been used ever since and is completely free of royalties - just a credit on the Tubeway Army album (where it was first used). Another topic that cropped up was the infamous Here I Am. It's obvious that Gary doesn't really know what compilations are being released - he had never seen the cover of that CD until I showed him that day! However, the mystery of the live tracks seems to have been resolved. The recordings came from the Isolate tour after all. The afternoon soon disappeared and we wrapped up the meeting at about 18:00. I'd taken along some gifts from fans (thanks Mike Zitaglio) and I passed them on to Gary. He was delighted. I also had some fan items to get autographed. As always, Gary was more than happy to sign them. The jeep was staying at Gary's parents house so that it could be worked on. Gary therefore planned to take the Corvette back to his house. I had to move my car so that he could get it out. I got one final punch from Gemma and then I said my goodbyes to everyone. Gary and Gemma were a few minutes behind me as they made their way back to Gary's house. So, there you have it folks. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Gosh, what did I ask about in August's Q&A session - a Gary Numan singles collection? Looks like BB were reading my mind or I was getting vibes from them :-). I assume they'll use the E. Reg "Cars" to take advantage of the Carlsberg advertising. I am optimistic that this could be an important release in Gary's comeback: a single CD of all the BB hits, no album tracks. While "Exhibition" and "The Best of Gary Numan 1978-83" were good for fans (although the second was quite redundant) it may have been offputting for casual buyers who might only have recognized AFE through "I Die; You Die" i.e. 6 tracks out of 34 - a low percentage which may have presented too much of a risk. "Premier Hits" will increase the percentage and should appeal to the greatest hits collectors and to those turned on by the Carlsberg ad. He may even get a regular album chart placing with it! Would a follow up later next year of a Numa/IRS singles collection not be a bad idea? If people are turned on by the BB compilation they may be willing to try another singles collection. It would also give more exposure to Gary's post-BB catalogue as well as be an introduction to his most recent material. I'll ask Gary what he thinks.
