You be the judge. I have already stated that what is noted as the 12" version of 'Emotion' on Babylon 6 is in fact the CD mix. To my knowledge the CD mix was slightly longer than the 12" mix but I have also noticed that 'Skin Game' and it's b-sides are stated as being 1991 releases. They were actually released in 1992. Bolan's song "Hang-Ups" from his "Dandy in the Underworld" sounds very "Numanecent" I'd be curious to know how much of Gary's influences show up in his music. "I dream of wires..." To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Season's Greetings, I just wanted to wish happy holidays to all subscribers. This time of year gets quiet as most people get caught up in the holiday business and don't get to their computers as often as they would like. Things will likely not pick up till after New Year. I will be scarce until the new year myself. So until then, may your days be full of cheer and your future bright. To say Gary's music had an effect on me might be an understatement, way back in the pre-MTV era most fans knew bands by the image they projected on stage, album covers, and the occasional music-mag interview (now some can show what asses they are to millions instantaneously), when I started to collect numan albums I was into sci-fi, Gary's image and music, a machine-like existence, became an alternate reality for me far from the banality of most rock/pop of the 70's, (teen angst will do that to you). Anyway, Gary also did something else that was to affect my future, it has always been customary for bands to list the musicians on an album and the instrument they play but he took it one step further by actually listing most all of the instruments used, on some albums they were listed for each song. Although I had probably heard many synthesizers on other albums, listening to Gary's music and knowing that a "Prophet 5" (whatever that was!) or a "Moog" was making these ungodly sounds created an aura of mystery that caused me to become interested in sound synthesis and music, although I could not afford synths at that time I found you could actually build them yourself (who can guess the end of this story?), which led me to take courses in electronics and although I never actually built a synth I began to purchase instruments starting with a Moog Rogue (I won't list them all!). My interest in how these machines ticked led me to a career in engineering and for the last 8 years I have worked as a contract engineer mostly for a large well known corporation, I am still inspired by Gary's music after all these years and it is this and making music that keeps me going. (insert sound of ARP string ensemble at fade-out). Also to reference the here and now, someone mentioned in the Digest that they had heard Gary mentioned on MTV, yes tis true, the singer from the Rentals mentioned my top three influences in nearly the same breath, Gary Numan, the Cars and Devo, also Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails is a fan and has mentioned Gary and the Cars as influences, another interview described him working on "a remake of an obscure Gary Numan song called Metal" when they came to interview him, and on Trent's label "Nothing" records a band called Marilyn Manson does a ripping hard-core version of "Down in the park" that does it justice while sounding original in it's own right. Well, I have overused my share of bandwidth, see you at Q and A Randall - rswolf@gate.net ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Dec 1995 21:47:33 +0200 (IST) From: Alex Shaltiel Subject: Intro... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu INTRO: Hi all from Israel, I've been lurking here since #139 ,But its about time to do an intro, I've been a numan fan for 15 years since I heard LO/80 on the local radio (Horrible mono/AM),Boy what an impact, took me 6 months till I got the vinyl. I'm 29 Years old, seems that's about right for what most people here are +/-. And I'm bombarding numan at 2x250 watts music power for years and they say it's an earthquake:-). It's been a constant struggle to get numan stuff here, But that may be a bit of the reason for being so dedicated, the harder it is to get, the more one wants it. Also, The more rare numan becomes the more special and individual a numan fan becomes. In 1984 I met another numanoid ,That makes 2 of us here, he doesn't have E-mail yet. ON TOUR: In 1993 we went to see the Dream-corrosion tour, and update the old record pile, for all you guys who think the DC CD quality is pour, YOUR DARN RIGHT!, But it sounds far superior to the horrible mushy sound down at Hammersmith, It was a great disappointment as far as sound quality was concerned. The FAN-CLUB THING: In the entrance we were offered the program in which was an order form, from the fan club offering the radial pair video and one of he Images series, there was no word about not doing international orders so each one of us sent a separate letter with money ordering the goods, None of us received any answer at all, Not even to say they don't take international orders ,It can't be said the letters were lost since we sent each one on separate occasions. I fill like a SUCKER to be sending the club MONEY AGAIN (when it becomes international) for the same goods we should have received in the first place or money back...And as I've heard first-hand from a few people, in the UK, It TAKES MONTHS till the fan-club replies to members So, It's totally disloyal unfair and not business like! beware. The GOD Thing: For 15 years I've been listening to the man, only to realize on the Q/A that our views/beliefs on god are quit the same. So many wars and lives have been tortured and lost over faith (doesn't matter which ) than any other reason, I don't blame god for that as I don't blame/credit god for introducing morality issues, It's all man made god included. I miss god ,It's a good scapegoat for everything. --------------- Alex Shaltiel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Dec 1995 12:08:16 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Poll forms on WWW To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Easy to fill out and submit polling forms for both the Babylon 8 and live 96 poll are located at the 'Are Friends Electric?' www site run by Robert Eggleston. They can be accessed at: http://ourworld.compuserve.com:80/homepages/numan/digest.htm This is such an easy way to take part I hope it will encourage more to send in your input. It will be hard for us to say that the results represent the views of the fans if we only get 10 or 20 votes. This is a great opportunity to contribute to Gary's decision about future plans. FYI, my post about this site a week ago or so was based on a misunderstanding and things have been resolved between myself and Robert. I am very grateful for his kind offer to host these poll forms. If you have already done so by email, please don't vote again using the WWW forms. Just vote is all we ask! Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Many people have expressed their dislike, or perhaps disappointment, in some of Gary's most recent work. I certainly have not been absent from this group as I like Outland and Machine + Soul less than other Numan releases. Of course Sacrifice was great leap in the right direction as even Gary himself would say. I am a bit puzzled by some comments made about The Fury, Strange Charm and Metal Rhythm. I love these albums. I am not only a synthesizer junkie but a dance junkie, with reservations. I like these albums because I love the music not necessarily the words or vocals. This brings me to the many people that have expressed their feelings toward Gary's music and lyrics and how they were and are effected by them. I wish my obsession (having to own EVERYTHING) with Numan stems not from the lyrics but the music. I have yet to find anything that SOUNDS as good as Numan. I wish I could say how much I can relate to the lyrics or that I love Gary's vision. I appreciate those aspects of his music, but I just love the music. I had to drive accross the country last year and had room for 1 Numan tape. I chose The Fury and Metal Rhythm, with the singles included. It is probably my most listened to tape. I have probably exceeded the line limit so I will sign off. My $.02. I have been searching for a copy for several years, it having been deleted at least two years ago. FYI, Yen supported Gary on tour and thank him and his parents in the credits on this album. I specifically want a non-US copy. UK, German or Japanese will do. I already have a US copy so tere's no need to offer me one of those. The imports to the USa have an extra track, plus I prfer to ahve import over US made CDs. If you can help you would make me a very happy man - this is the only CD left on my list of hard to find and/or deleted albums. I have tried family and friends in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands, and Sweden all with no luck so far. Please put me out of my misery if you can.
