It all started quite by accident. I was going to volunteer my service to write the liner notes for one or both of their up and coming CD releases. I had this idea in the middle of the night on Monday 27 November. The next morning I tried to find out where BB HQ was now located. After asking around, I decided to plump for Richmond, London. I phoned directory enquiries and they had a telephone number but no fax number. This sort of proposal is always best done on paper. Anyway, I phoned the number and found out what their fax was. So far so good. I then sat down and composed a letter. This was done within a few minutes and then I fired it down the fax. I expected an answer quite quickly and I was not to be disappointed. The phone rang about ten minutes later. Oh my god - it was Steve Webbon (one of the guys responsible for signing Numan in 1978). He told me that I faxed one of their shops. BB HQ is now in Wandsworth. He then moved on to say that someone from Q and MOJO magazines had been commissioned to write the liner notes but that he would bear me in mind for another time. Q writing Numan liner notes? Next the moon will be made of cheese. I told him about the Internet and all the Numan things going on. He had heard of the Web but had not actually seen it in operation. He asked if I could show him. As it turned out I was going to London on Wednesday and I would have a few hours free from early afternoon. He agreed. I got to the street in question on time and paced up and down. I had the building numbers, but few of the buildings were numbered. I eventually decided to approach a rather run down set of buildings in the left hand side of the road. I pressed the intercom button and a voice with an East London accent said it was open. I opened the door to find a reception area with two girls and literally thousands of CDs lining the walls. I first of all checked that this was BB! I then said that I was looking for Steve Webbon and they told me to sit down. After a few minutes, Steve emerged. Not at the spiral staircase in the middle of the room - but at the door I had just come through. We shook hands and I followed him back outside again. He was a lot younger than he had seemed on the phone. He's probably the same age as Gary. I mentioned that BB were difficult to find. He said it was deliberate, in case they ever had any big names again. We went in a further door and Steve took me down to his open plan office. This was filled with Mac hippies designing new album covers. It turns out that Steve is the BB art director - with occasional responsibility for the back catalogue. I got the laptop out and showed him some of the things on the Internet - including the Digest. He was very impressive and certainly keen to utilise it as a resource. For example, Beggars are planning other projects to cash in Numan's up and coming mass recognition. Steve would like the help of Numan fans on the Internet to locate Numan items that could one day be re-released. This would really only cover Numan's time with Beggars (i.e. Tubeway Army to Warriors - 1978 to 1983). The things that he is looking for include good quality bootlegs and private recordings, tapes of radio shows and photographs. So, if you think you can help, drop me a line on Machman@County.Net. Let me know what you've got, its format and condition and from what year it relates. We then moved on to Beggars' new releases - which we have already talked about in the Digest. This includes the 15 re-mastered Numan singles as "Premier Hits" and the lovingly titled "Songs That Have Come In From The Cold" - the tribute album. Although Beggars have not confirmed this, I now don't expect to see this latter album until perhaps May or June. The dreaded "Living Ornaments" on CD cropped up again. This will >Definitely< appear in 1996. Steve confirmed that the 1980 tapes were lost - so the issue will be The Touring Principle from 1979 and The Farewell Concert from 1981. Even these are not available in their entirety. Some tracks and most of the applause are being taken from videos loaned to the company! On the subject of videos, Steve indicated that some re-issues could be on the cards. He would love to issue 1979, 1981 and even 1980 if something could be found. But, he would definitely remove the early special effects that marred the original. Unfortunately, none of those video companies exist any more and so most of master were probably dumped into skips years ago. The closer we get to 1996, the better it is looking. I had a message from Gary this morning and he is >Incredibly< excited about the next year. And with good reason. Finally I had a chat with some of the Mac hippies in the office. They admired my laptop (which I actually think is quite dated!) They all wanted one because their Mac screens seemed to have a depth of about a metre. I chatted with the girl who laid out some of the early sleeves - including Telekon. She agreed that Gary always wanted to keep things as simple as possible. Probably the most ambitious cover was The Pleasure Principle. So, there you have it. The meeting was wrapped up after about two hours. It was then on out to Plumstead for a meeting with the producer of the cover band GN2. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html machman@county.net ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Dec 95 00:06 PST From: dlgeer@spider.lloyd.com (dlg) Subject: Gary's accident To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Whew!!!Just found out about Gary's motorcycle accident.Thank goodness he wasn't badly injured!A pox on the driver of the car that pulled out in front of him.I wonder if she knows how close she came to being responsible for yet another great rock&roll tragedy! It's really quite amazing and more than a little scary how fast something like that can happen. It's a shame Gary's bike didn't fare as well as he,but better to lose a motorcycle than ones life!"Glad your still with us Gary". Well, Edmonton, Alberta... I am a 29 year old fan of Mr. Numans, I suppose you could say I have been listening to his music since 1979. In previous mail, people have written about the effect this musician has had on them, I must admit -- I too have been an impressionable adolescent when listening to Gary's Music. Perhaps to some extent my persuit of a demanding career in Forest Management is due to Gary's earlier lyrics...he had some very negative things to say about your standard woman...Well, I ain't standard...(not many female foresters...even in Canada) I remember this line...."Hotel rooms, sweet dreams like slot machines and call it love love." "coin in the hole, you young things dont stay young for long." EEEEEeeeekkk! (better be a good girl..) Seriously, how many rock stars can actually claim to be a GOOD influence? Gary didnt drink, or do drugs or promote naughtiness. Thank heavens, I listened to him and not "the CLASH" (Gary loves this group) ;) Tribute Album Suggestion: "GhostDreams" (sounds like something Gary would think up) Numan in the North American Market. North Americans have over simple tastes (works against Gary). In order for the majority of us base Americans he will have to adopt technology the way Peter Gabriel did...Sorry Gary..Your music will have to be visually assissted with Computer Graphics and Animation. Otherwise most people just wont get the subtelty of music and elegance of his lyrics. Gabriel had many of the same problems, He mainstreamed a bit, and didnt touch his lyrics. If you do need animators...I know a few. I think it's a pretty good (albeit slightly twisted version). The album contains versions (and I do use the term loosely) of a number of late-70's-early 80's tracks. The novelty of most of the songs wears off pretty quickly (yes, it does sound cool, but do we really need a 7 minute + dirge version of Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs"? What's wrong with that?) "Replicants" consists of members of L.A. bands "Failure" (definite Numan influence) and "Tool". ]=====================================[ ] Anu Kirk ] ] "I am, I said" -- Neil Diamond ] ] e-mail: anu@spatializer.com ] http://www.spatializer.com/anu ] PGP key available on request ]=====================================[ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Dec 1995 09:13:35 -0500 (EST) From: BENNETDK@jmu.edu Subject: Need "Berserker" Info ... This was their reply : >We don't stock any Gary Numan because there is little demand for it and it's not >really that easily available any more. Whilst I can understand their 'demand' argument, I'm a little concerned about their 'availability' comment. I wonder if Gary is aware of the apparent availability problem. Comments ? Also, I tried to order the Berserker re-issue from HMV's orderline the other day. The guy I spoke to said they didn't have any and were not expecting any either ! I eventually tracked a copy down elsewhere, but it does rather concern me that one of the largest music retail outlets in the UK isn't getting new Numan stuff in stock. More comments ? Later, Sean. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ email : Sean_Francis@realworld.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Dec 1995 16:54:35 -0500 From: ultravox@pb.net (Fred L. Indeed, my copy has no lyric sheet. He said that you should be able to order it separately from where you bought your vinyl. Has anyone done this ? Does the lyric sheet exist ?
