I wanted to say a few things at the beginning of another year of the Digest, its fourth. First, thank you to all subscribers for making 1995 the most successful and most interesting yet on the Digest. Subscriptions and interest rose dramatically such that we had to go twice weekly from weekly. I think the quality has maintained it's relatively noise free level almost throughout. Second, the most important event has been the arrival of Gary himself into the on-line age and his direct interaction with us in the monthly question and answer sessions. I never expected this to happen when we started out on this in 1991. I am still amazed. I hope Gary's interaction enriches the enjoyment you get from the Digest as much as it has done for me. And thanks to Gary for his willingness to open up to us fans. I for one feel privileged. Third, I wanted to thank a few prominent people for their efforts and contributions, specifically: - Dave Datta for another year of list maintenance thogh I wish I could say it was problem free :-) - Matthew Holbrook for the up to the minute info and reports from his trips to Outland, Beggars Banquet etc; - Jeff Tolva for taking over maintenance of the Numan Discography; - Kay Teel for generating the long overdue FAQ we desperately needed; - Joey Lindstrom for acting as info central for North Americans planning to see the Exile Tour; - Donald Pedder for undertaking the most horrendously difficult poll; - Aaron Hannum for doing the Exile Tour Poll; and anyone else I may have missed who helped make the Digest what it is. Fourth, I'd like to thank all the Numan WWW page creators for adding new dimensions to the Numan on-line exprience. What incredible resources of info we now have at our disposal. I feel quite inadequate out here in Asciiland. Last, I'd like to just say I think 1996 could be a very exciting year for all concerned. A new album, more compilations, cover albums, tribute albums, one, maybe two tours, new record deal, greater exposure. I hope all this excitement is not just our own creation but is real and translates into tangible benefits for Gary's career. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu A few digests ago Markus Dietrich posted Numan chart placings for the UK. Thank you is in order, even though I posted chart placings for the UK about a month earlier! Anyway, Markus your chartplacings almost totally disagree with mine...what source did you use? I used the "Guiness book of rock stars", which, as it is produced by Guiness, is fairly trustworthy (the renowned British book of hit singles is also produced by Guiness). Also, another book I have (the "omnibus book of British and USA hits") confirms some of the chart placings I posted! TO OTHER NUMANOIDS. If you happen to be sitting on top of a copy of the book of "Canadian hits" or a "History of German charts" or WHATEVER, then PLEASE post Numan chart placings on the digest. Surely an equivalent of the "Guiness book of British hit singles" exists for most countries. Chart placings for albums might be nice too. Happy New Year! Erik Stein. ------------------------------ Date: 01 Jan 96 11:16:49 EST From: Subject: Dark Light - not what it seems To: I've just been trawling through some Digest back issues and I came across the correspondence and analysis done on Dark Light. The conclusion was that the album was part live and part studio. We've also had debates about the number of lyrical mistakes Numan made that night. Well, I've just been watching the bootleg video of the night Dark Light was recorded. Things were going along nicely until Stormtrooper in Drag. I was just about to start mumbling the first words - "And so here am I quite by chance near the phone" when Gary cut in missing out the first five lines. He started with the chorus "Take that smile off your face" etc. and then when the chorus should have been sung - he did the chorus again! On Dark Light, the words are there as they should have been. The other difference I noticed was during I Die: You Die. In this concert, Numan gets the crowd to sing one of the lines - but he is singing the line himself on the CD. This is all very interesting - but it does mean that bootlegs are now the only way of capturing how these nights really were. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html machman@county.net ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Dec 1995 02:04:33 -0500 From: DBychowski@aol.com Subject: Foo Fighters To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Apoligies if this post is redundent but fyi that ex-Nirvana, Ex- Sunny Day Real Estate band Foo Fighters have been covering "Down In The Park" in there live sets. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jan 1996 02:49:21 GMT From: neil.mitchell@ukonline.co.uk Subject: Gary Numan To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi Heather, I'm Neil from the UK, I've been into Gary for about 14 years! I became a fan of Gary after I bought a blue vinyl album by (to me at the time) an unknown group called Tubeway Army. After listening to these catchy songs, I became hooked, and have been ever since. I understand that this album is now a collectors item. Until recently, I wasn't aware that the internet had any information, but I glad it has. That's about it from me for know. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jan 1996 15:08:54 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Numan & Virgin Megastore - comment To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Sean said: >I recently made an enquiry about why Virgin doesn't stock any Numan >>material in their megastore on Compuserve. I wonder if Gary is aware of the >>apparent availability problem. > >Comments ? I think this is a load of rubbish/trash/garbage from Virgin. Pinnacle, distributors of Gary's Numa label, are supposedly one of the UK's biggest distributors of music. Beggars Banquet are also a big label with good distribution. If Virgin wanted to stock Numan material, they could get it within a day or so. >Also, I tried to order the Berserker re-issue from HMV's orderline the >>other day. The guy I spoke to said they didn't have any and were not >>expecting any either ! I eventually tracked a copy down elsewhere, but it >>does rather concern me that one of the largest music retail outlets in >the >UK isn't getting new Numan stuff in stock. >More comments ? This is appalling. Is Gary's comeback going to be stifled by the record chains as well as Radio 1? How many fans out there don't know that "Berserker" is out on CD because HMV or Virgin aren't stocking it. Is this a general UK -wide phenomenon? If so, I'll alert Gary and Tony to the problem so they can bring it to Pinnacle's attention. I've seen Berserker CDs in two of southern California's best import stores: Lou's of Encinitas ($21.49) and Aaron's of Hollywood ($25.98). It amy take a while for Tower or Blockbuster Music to get it but I hope to see it in those stores as well as the independents eventually. Could people let me know by email how much Berserker is selling for in your neck of the world. $26 seems very steep to me. No one has answered my questions about the new Berserker CD: 1. What is the price in UK music stores? 2. Which company made the CD - most likely Mayking Records or Disctronics (check the inner rim of the CD). 3. If anyone gets a new copy and has the original UK Fan Club release, can you tell any difference in the sound quality. I'd really apprecaite knowing. (he even said "thank you!") ** FUNNIEST NOTE ** this award goes unquestionably to mike metlay (atomic@netcom.com), who sent a check and a Post-It note which read: >> YES!! RUSH ME MY XL NUMA T-SHIRT! I ENCLOSE $12. I CERTIFY THAT I AM OVER 18. I CERTIFY THAT I AM REAL. I CERTIFY THAT I NEED IT. I NEED IT. I NEED IT. << i thought it was great. in fact, mike, a few less words per line, and you could help pen MACHINE & SOUL part 2! ** MOST CORRESPONDENCE ** this goes ("keeps on going...!") to donald pedder (dpedder@extro.ucc.su.OZ.AU). ** MOST SUSPICIOUS ORDER ** this came from fred geer (dlgeer@spider.lloyd.com), who sent me a check with someone ELSE'S names on it. furthermore, i could find no record of his order (and he forgot to include his netad!). thankfully, he noticed my plea for the inclusion of netads and other informations, and promptly sent the info. ** MOST ROMANTIC ENVELOPE ** this award goes lovingly to clea boone, (anagrey@sover.net), whose check arrived in a water-dropped, ink-smeared envelope (was it tears, or just the rain...?). this evoked a great image of our very own (soaking wet) clea running through the rainyslick streets in vermont, desperately seeking a mailbox. clea should also get an award for the most confusingly-folded letter. was that supposed to be a puzzle?! ** BIGGEST SWEETHEART ** this award goes, of course, to derek langsford (dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu) who not only gives a piece of himself just about weekly to this digest, but graciously processed all out of USA cheques for me! what a sweetie! and, now, the award you've all been waiting for... ** BIGGEST ASSHOLE ** (i have a feeling many people who were scrolling past this post just stopped, abruptly...). this award was a close call between two assholes. but when it comes right down to it, i think it's a clear choice. you decide: a few hours after i sent the SECOND individual reminder to those folks who hadn't yet paid for their shirts, i got the following email from fred holtz, (a Ph.D, no less) (ultravox@pb.net): >> "PLEASE BE ADVISED: I never placed an order for a shirt. I responded to your original request which asked "Would I be INTERESTED in ordering a shirt should they become available". I am no longer interested and never committed to an order in the first place. My appologies for the misunderstanding, HOWEVER, please do not contact me again about this matter. FRED" << ok. you may be sitting there thinking there's nothing wrong with this email. but, bear in mind that this was a response to the SECOND (personal!) reminder to please pay. not to mention the group posts i gave to the digest regarding the shirts. IF, in fact, he had "never placed an order," he could have at least had the courtesy to let me know. if. if. well, i got to thinking, which got me to pull the file i've been keeping with all the correspondence i've have had with all of you beautiful people since this thing started. guess what i found. you guessed it? wow. for the record, though, let me quote the following email i got on Wed. Nov 1, 1995 at 12:24 am, from ULTRAVOX@pb.net (fred): >> "You can put me down for two XL Gary Numan T-Shirts, as long as they are somewhere around $10.00 I still have my original ones from the Touring Principle and Teletour. Thanks for all your efforts! Fred." << ok, fred. you said you don't want me to contact you about this matter. fine. i'll respect that. however, that's not going to stop me from flaming your stupid ass all over the digest, which, by the way, is not a fucking garage sale for all your leftover gary numan shit. "Thanks for all your efforts?" hey, fred: kiss my ass. and to everyone else, i've get two extra shirts. let me know if you need them. ------------------ ok. that's it. everyone go home. there's nothing else to see here. clear out. let the flame police do their work. take care, everyone! imp out. seriously, thanks to everyone else who made this a success. i promise you the shirts will be there soon! ]:) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jan 1996 20:04:36 -0500 From: ultravox@pb.net (Fred L. Holtz, Ph.D) Subject: NUMAN Video for sale? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) Hello again! There is a local (New York) record shop selling what I assume to be a bootleg video called "VISUAL NUMAN". The tape includes all the material from The Touring Principle, Micromusic, Berserker, and Newman Numan (over 3.5 hours of video!) The tape is absolutely great and contains every video, concert, promo, and filler that I am familiar with. It appears to be in mono, however. If anyone is interested in buying it, they are asking $40.00. You can e-mail me for info. Is anyone else aware of this collection?
