As we are aware the Digest T-shirt has been a major undertaking by Imp for which we should all be grateful. Not only are we getting a top quality product but it is being made available by the shear hard work and kindness of Imp. If you have not paid for your ordered t-shirt, please do so now. It is only courteous to Imp, who has put so much effort into it, and to the rest of us who have ordered shirts, but which have been delayed because a minority have not met their obligation and responsibility to pay for their shirts in a timely manner. It's no wonder he is getting impatient. Please send payments to: Benjamin Holcomb Imp Graphic Studios 66 Cameron Ave #3 Somerville, MA 02144 BUYING NUMA MATERIAL -------------------- Being able to order directly via NUWORLD one can obtain items at much the same cost as one would pay locally but by omitting the middle men, such purchases enables Numa to get more money per sale than they would otherwise. This is something to think about for future Numa purchases. Once credit card payment is possible, ordering on-line may be the easiest, quickest and possibly cheapest way to get Numa releases. e.g. the new "Berserker" CD cost = #10 shipping = #3 Total = #13 In $US thats $21.15 (at $1.55 per pound) which is cheaper than I have seen it in the USA ($21.49 and $25.98 + sales tax at 7 or 8%). If you buy more than one item, the savings will be even greater. The only people who lose out are the middle men. I believe Daniel Lanois' name was floated. While I don't particularly dislike either his production work or his own releases, Lanois and Gary would seem an ill fit to me. Lanois production is far too muted and retiring to fit with Gary's current sound. Given his new, darker and much more satisfying direction, why not work with Bill Laswell. His recent ambient and dub work is absolutely fantastic. Whether as a producer or a remixer, I think he'd be a good match for Gary's latest material. Just my thoughts. Also, has anyone else picked up the re-releases of Pete Shelley's HOMOSAPIEN and XL1 albums? It's great to finally get them on CD and with bonus tracks to boot. Supposedly HEAVEN AND THE SEA has been re-released, but I haven't run across it. Love on ya! BDC ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jan 96 16:49:12 EST From: "Richard V. Paiement" Subject: Assholes & Bootlegs To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) Three useless replies on my part for this Digest. First, "E.Stein" wishes us all a: >Happy New Year! Well, geez, thanks, and the same to all readers, and of course to Gary. Second, Dangerimp@aol.com writes: >the shirts have been finished, packaged even, for two weeks. your patience is >much appreciated. Looking forwarding to seeing these things. He goes on to say: > ** BIGGEST ASSHOLE ** >(i have a feeling many people who were scrolling past this post just stopped, >abruptly...). > >this award was a close call between two assholes. but when it comes right >down to it, i think it's a clear choice. you decide: Well, it's hard to pick, since I'm missing the other candidate's profile, but I'll leave it up to you, imp, to give the award to the most deserving. He finishes with: >i promise you the shirts will be there soon! Please hurry. The temperature went down to -34 deg Celcius (without wind chill) last night, and I need the shirt to keep warm. And third, From: ultravox@pb.net (Fred L. Holtz, Ph.D) mentions that: >There is a local (New York) record shop selling what I assume to be a >bootleg video called "VISUAL NUMAN". The tape includes all the material >from The Touring Principle, Micromusic, Berserker, and Newman Numan (over >3.5 hours of video!) The tape length is an obvious give-away that this IS a bootleg. No commercially-available pre-recorded videotape would ever contain more than 2 hours per tape, because they only record at slow tape speed. (Or do some cheapo companies actually stuff more than 2hrs on a tape???) That's it for my useless comments. After being quiet for months, I felt like contributing something. ************************************************************** Richard V. I too am concerned at the distribution of the CD, even in the UK! Unlike 'HUMAN', the Berserker CD made it to only one record shop in Ipswich (HMV and Virgin never had it), and that was about 2.5 weeks after release - not very encouraging considering he's meant to be playing a gig here in March. [it's *possible* they all sold out the day of release before I got there of course. Possible]. Anyway, I picked it up eventually in MVC for 11.69 pounds (uk). The sound quality is very good IMO. One comment on the ?bootleg 'Visual Numan' video mentioned. Whatever it is, it *can't* be 3.5 hours and contain *all* the material from the official videos mentioned - that would make it almost 5 hours of material (TP 1hour, MM 2hours, NN 45mins, B 59mins). I ordered mine about a month and a half ago - the same day I noticed the little letters "NTSC" on the order form. :-) I received email from Tony Webb yesterday explaining that the videos had not yet been shipped to me because he had not yet received them, and he apologized for letting things slide a bit (which, given the Christmas season, is completely understandable). He seemed to feel that they should be arriving Real Soon Now. He told me mine was the very first order (hey! cool!) and that it would therefore be the first shipped. Now: 1) If you've already ordered your videos, please be patient - as soon as they're available to be shipped, they will be. I myself am waiting quite patiently - I've waited many, many years to get my hands on *ANY* Numan videos, I can certainly wait a few more weeks. 2) If you were about to order them, I think that this situation will very likely be cleared up by the time your order is received, or shortly thereafter - so I'd say yeah, go ahead and order now if you've got the money ready (they're a tad pricy if you're having them shipped to Canada, lemme tell ya!). I think at most you might have to wait a week or so longer than the anticipated "allow 6-8 weeks for delivery". Just keep in mind that everything involved in the "Numan camp", from Numa Records to the Fan Club to NuWORLD, is "family-run" - there's no large warehouse of videos and CD's to ship from, no large staff of highly-efficient merchandise movies. There's just Gary, his dad, his mum, and his bro... and considering the delays I've encountered ordering merchandise from BIG companies, I'd say they do one heck of a fine job. :-) A satisfied customer. /--------------------------------------------------------- / Joey Lindstrom / numanoid@netway.ab.ca / http://www.netway.ab.ca/numanoid/wwwebb.htm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Jan 1996 04:07:59 GMT From: lhebert@premier.net Subject: Numan Mailing List To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings: My name is Lloyd Hebert. Leave it to me to throw a proverbial monkey wrench in the exciting goings on at the NuWorld site. Well, since I'm at the mercy of my employer (which is who pays the subscription that allows me and many others Internet access), I am forced to accept their hardware decisions. One decision which is leaving me cold is that they decided to go with SCO (Santa Cruz something or other) as their operating system. Having said that, when I attempt to browse the NuWorld site, I receive pretty much an empty page; the only thing it says is that the site prefers Netscape to browse. I am unable to "click" on anything. The "think tank" here tells me that Netscape is incompatible with SCO. Even someone as computer-illiterate as myself can conclude that I am currently SOL (what company has that acronym pray tell?) Anyway, besides wanting to bring this to your attention, I'd like to pose this question to list members who actually know what they're doing (as opposed to myself): Can you recommend a quick solution to this problem? Is there any browsing software available on the Internet that can solve this incompatibility problem? Or is the only solution to wait until NuWorld "diversifies" (for lack of a better word)? Living in the US,or what should be called OldWorld regarding the complete lack of Numan material, I have been excited about NuWorld and have deliberately not searched for Gary's CD's elsewhere since learning of NuWorld through the digest. I have nothing since Outland and would like to pick up the last two CD's (M&S and S). I would've liked to purchase them directly from Gary but it looks as if that may have to be, at best, postponed. If this is not an easy problem to solve, perhaps someone can suggest where I might purchase M&S and S. Polygram, we are told, are intending to TV advertise this album in the UK. Whether the title is to remain 'Premier Hits' or not we don't know, nor do we know if the release date is to move. More news on this development soon including, hopefully, Polygrams plans for it's possible release around the world. The promotional campaign for this album, coupled with the forthcoming 'Techno Army' album of Numan covers is likely to raise Gary's profile higher than it has been for more than 15 years. end NUWORLD segment ---- This is a very exciting development IMO as it means Gary will get more exposure than he has done since his heyday. A worldwide release will also help Gary procure an international record deal. I think, now more than ever, that Gary should follow this up later this year with a singles compilation of his Numa/IRS catalogue to bring people, newly turned on to Gary's music by the "Premier Hits" release, up to date with what he has done recently. It would be a good segue for them into his more recent work and maybe increase his fan base. Any opinions? Might Polygram add 'Change your Mind', for which they hold the rights, despite it being out of synch chronologically?
