Wow, what a small (Nu)world. I was, in fact, the first person in the door, after waiting in the lobby for a few hours. Ah, the nostalgia. He opened with "This is My House," and went on to do a great set. Ever the historian, I wrote down each song title as it was played, all the way to the closing with "We Are Glass" (then as now, perhaps, my favorite Numan song). I still have clippings of the two concert reviews from Chicago papers (they were negative, of course, in a pearls-before-swine kind of way). Shortly thereafter I went to Wax Trax records on Lincoln Avenue and bought a shrink-wrapped 12" copy of "We Take Mystery" with Gary's autograph (!!). To this very day, the shrink-wrap is intact. Am I a fan, or what? Anyway, while I was there I shot a roll of film. Not long ago, I was cleaning house and came across the negatives. I don't know if anyone is interested (Deana herself might be, since she was there), but I could reprint a few of them and ship them off. Most of the images are pretty fuzzy but there are a couple that are pretty good. Two of them will live forever, enlarged to 8-1/2 x 11 and adorning the walls of my house...As I recall, there is one pretty good shot of Pino Palladino, and a good one of Gary striking a great pose, with brother John in the background. If anybody's interested, drop me a line at scott.lucado@corp.amrcorp.infonet.com By the way, I'll mail them free, unless people get picky and want enlargements delivered overnight. My nostalgia fit is almost over, but there's one more thing. Back in '82, my girlfriend at the time clipped a newspaper article for me titled "New Style Suits Numan Well," in which there was a claim that Gary was working on a soundtrack for a soft-core porno film. Has anybody ever heard of this? Had you not become so childish, Imp, I would have gladly taken the T-Shirts. Notice I did type WOULD HAVE! In fact, I could have taken half-a-dozen, but I prefer to do business with people of a more professional stature! >As to my "garage sale", the ten or so people who have ordered material from >me are QUITE happy with the stuff. The transactions were friendly, prompt, >and everyone benefitted. (Want to help me out here, folks?). I believe the >purpose of this digest, or one of them anyway, is to obtain Gary Numan >materials. Some of the material I have sold is available nowhere else. Got some good points there Fred. I must admit I am a THREE TIME satisfied customer of the great Fred Holtz Numan Sale! And I'm (as well as friends and family members) better off because of Fred's overabundance of Numan collectables. Believe me, I got WAY more than my money's worth! It seems those who paid for their shirts can not attest to such a thing, since there seems to be some delay at your end... >I AM sorry for the misunderstanding, and never intended anything sarcastic >by my "thanks for your efforts" comment. At the time, I really meant it. >HOWEVER, your "flame" is whole-heartedly vile and completely stupid. How >old are you anyway? Wondered about the age myself... >I'm sure the vast majority of Digest readers don't give a rat's ass about >your problems collecting money from disinterested parties. >FRED The price of offering a service... I believe there is such a think as a misunderstanding -- a miscommunication even. It seems to me that, even if Fred did in fact order a T-Shirt from you, you have taken an incredible amount of time getting things done. If I were one of the ones who did order AND PAY FOR a T-Shirt, I would want a helluva lot more for my money than a note here in the digest stating that my shirt is done, but I can't have it yet. "I don't give two monkeys" (quote: Gary Numan, Mtv, "It Came From The Eighties") about anyone else who did not pay! If I ordered and paid, I expect my T-Shirt, post-haste! Which brings me to my point: Fred has indeed provided a REPEATED and REPUTABLE service via this digest. I, personally have ordered three seperate lots of Numan material from Fred and received exactly what he advertised in an incredibly fast manner, and in surprisingly good shape! Shipped items actually in near-mint condition, whodda thought it possible? And even paid for extra shipping expenses to get me the items. Until you have such a record, I suggest you keep your flamming down to a smaller comment. I do not know Fred personally, but I have benefitted from his abundance of Numan material -- which I am quite lucky to have gotten for the price, as have several friends and relatives. I wonder if perhaps Imp is one who became upset when Fred would not break up his "lot" sales, so as to cash in on a Numan "gem" for a great deal... The duplicates of items I already possessed made great gifts! It's been a win - win situation from my standpoint. I believe everyone has the right to their opinion -- and I do not wish to degrudge you that Imp. Likewise, I am expressing my opinion. You willingly took on the risk of non-payment by ALL those who offered to purchase T-Shirts. If only 10% of those who committed to buying have since backed out, you should consider yourself lucky -- you're doing better than most any other retailer! NOW, may we please GET OVER THIS! And that's all I have to say adout that... Troy L. Gary, I've seen a few written references to short stories you have written both on this Internet list and elsewhere. When listening to your music I find that your lyrics evoke some very strong images (some probably far different than you intended, but evokative nontheless!) If your lyrics have such an impact, I'd assume your writing would too. Are your short stories available in any way (via fan club, via letter, via internet?) Also, on an unrelated topic: Since you like Blade Runner, Aliens and that lot have you ever read William Gibson's 'Neuromancer'? For me Gibson is to prose like Numan is to music. If you have not done so, you might want to pick up a copy, I am sure you would enjoy it. My name is Mark Castleberry and I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA. I have been an avid fan of Gary Numan since the late 70's when I was a Music Major (piano performance) in a local university. My best friend, Denny Lankford, and I were both crazy about Gary Numan and used to sit at the piano and play some of the motives from his music. Since then, Denny's not with us anymore, and I've got other interests, but about 6 months ago, I found a local Cd shop that could get me previous Gary Numan on CD. I've been pretty wild since then. Before that point, though, I kept playing a quiet piano version of "Down in the Park" which is my favorite piece (or in the top 5). When I got his greatest hits and heard his piano rendition, it was quite spooky, because the style was a lot like the way I was playing. Makes me think that there *is* a universal spirit of music that flows in and out of people at different times. I can't think of any other explanation for it. Other artists that have had a profound influence on me are the Beatles, Elton John (my piano style is a lot like Elton's), Kraftwerk, Electric Light Orchestra, and gospel from growing up. I love New Age music like David Lanz and prefer to play in a minimalistic way when using the synthesizer and the 4-track recorder, hence my love of Gary Numan. He had such an influence on my interpretation of things I hear and also what comes out of me musically. His early synth-pop is probably my favorite. Well, that's all I'm going to write for now. I hope you let me stay in , because I've loved his music for a long time and jam to his music almost every night. Have a good one! mark castleberry p.s. I will soon be getting a much better multimedia computer and if you're interested, I'll record a MIDI file and upload. Let me know. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jan 96 17:59:00 GMT From: Matthew Tamea Subject: New Subscriber To: Numan Mailing List Hello all! Well, it's nice to finally find this digest, as my boss has deemed it fit that all employees remove Netscape from their PC. I only managed to get to see the first two editions of Nu-World before this happened, so I'm glad to have this contact now. My name's Matthew Tamea, and I've been a fan since the year dot, when I was just a nipper. Seven or eight to be (almost) exact. I've always collected Gary's records almost exclusively since then, in as many formats as I could, as many different colours, flavours, etc, etc. My best (and worst) moment was appearing on TV with Gary. It was the chance of a lifetime but I was a bit young to take it all in and was so scared and nervous when it actually came to be recorded that I couldn't speak, let alone smile. Too many people looking at me I'm afraid. The day did leave me with some fantastic memories though, as well as some of my most prized possessions. I'm now living and working in West London and catch Gary wherever and whenever possible. My only problem is that my girlfriend sits in the lounge too much where the stereo is and moans!!! Anyway, hope to see some of you on tour. Take care - Matthew. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Jan 1996 18:27:44 -0500 From: "Tony R. My name is Craig. I have been a Numan fan since the very beginning. The first song I ever heard was "Thats Too Bad" in about 1978. I have been hooked ever since. The thing I like most about Gary's music is that it is ever changing. Every album is different, every image is different, nothing ever stays the same. My collection of material is extensive, and has grown thanks to some wonderful folks on the digest...Thanks Clea and Steve:-) I was born in England and moved to Canada in 1982, so it has been an up hill battle remaining on top of Numan movements. The High point in my life to date is meeting Gary in England and getting a handshake and a poster autographed. I am a musician myself, and have been greatly influenced by the Numan sound. I write and record my own songs, using mainly synthesisers and samplers. Before I finish Can anyone help me out with either a CD or tape copy of a CD of Dream Corrosion? I would be more than greatful. Until next time thats it Craig OTTAWA CANADA **** I HATE TO FADE ALONE, NOW THERE'S ONLY ME **** ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jan 1996 14:24:07 -0500 From: "Jeff Colaw, 224E, 7473" Subject: NuWorld Access, Part II To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Thanx for all of the support on the NuWorld Access problem I'm having. But as luck would have it, I do have a simplistic way around it. The main problem, to reiterate, is the incompatiblility between my browser (Mosaic) and Gary's (Netscape). Some icons developed using Netscape can not be activated (point and click) using Mosaic, BUT, as I discovered, not ALL of them! A friend let me try to access NuWorld using his machine and Netscape. Needless to say, everything worked fine. AND, I might add, Netscape is so much nicer to use; I can see why it was chosen. How do I solve my problem though? Well, my main problem was that on the main NuWorld screen was the "ENTER" icon, which could not be activated using Mosaic. So it was impossible to continue on. However, what Netscape allowed me to do was to jot down each http address for every icon that was of interest. For example, I copied down the address for the "ENTER" icon (http://www.numan.co.uk/gnuworld/gnuma.html) and the e-mail icon address (http://www.numan.co.uk/gnuworld/gemail.html). Then using the first address (that for "ENTER") in Mosaic, I was happy to see that it did indeed allow me to view the second NuWorld screen with all of the options. The graphics were relegated to text-only but at this point I'll take what I can get. The other thing I found out was that some pointers can be activated even in Mosaic (CD and Video Orders, E-Mail, etc.). One (of many) disadvantage(s) is that you cannot fill out an order form on-screen. Hopefully the kind folks at NuWorld who process orders will be understanding when they receive my handwritten order. Anyway, it may not be the most elegant method, but it works. Have I succeeded in confusing the #$%&@ out of everyone? At the very least, I can order the CD's that are impossible to find in the US. Perhaps the lesson here is JUST USE #$%&@ NETSCAPE! (This #$%&@, this is ONE computer language I can certainly understand!) Thanx so much for all of the offers of assistance; they are all greatly appreciated. I think I've taken this about as far as I can go.
