I'd like to make two things clear. The Digest is not an appropriate place for personal email. There are guidelines for posting and those do not include getting involved in flame wars that are nothing to do with Gary per se. I am sure the vast majority would prefer not to see this type of post in the Digest. So please save your vitriol for email. I would also like to clarify what appears to be a misunderstanding regarding the Digest t-shirt. This is not a business venture. Imp volunteered to do the shirts as a service to other subscribers because he has the contacts and resourcefulness to make it happen. He is making little, if any, money out of this. If there is a balance at the end, it is the result of the inability to precisely estimate the total costs involved. No profit margin per shirt has been built into the price. So please, don't criticise Imp for the delay in mailing shirts. He is not a business but a fan doing others a favour. One should not hold him up to the standards one expects from a business but give him the courtesy someone doing others a favour deserves. I can tell you from personal experience (collating orders, collecting payment and mailing 33 'Berserker' CDs from the UK to the US and Australia in 1992) that what Imp is doing is an enormous amount of work. I for one am very grateful for his efforts and can forgive him for letting his frustrations bubble through. I think it sad that someone doing so much more than the majority in the Digest should be unfairly dumped on. Bottom line - think carefully before you post. NUMAN - "Steel And You" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jan 1996 22:03:32 -0800 (PST) From: Robert Trousdale Subject: Can't we all just get along? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu About a year and a half ago, I was introduced to this list by Derek Langsford, who had posted an article to rec.music.synthpop (or something) about Gary Numan. What a surprise! There actually were others like me who loved and admired the inovative works of this highly underated artist. Gary may claim he is not a very good musician, but he is sure an inspiration and source of enjoyment to all of us- and for that, I can only offer my humble thanks- Gary, you are one of the "good guys" whatever that means. But alas, my brothers, there is dissention in the ranks. A member agreed to take on the Huculan task of organizing, printing, and distributing T-shirts for us here on the digest. Our own private club uniform, cool! The problem is that it seems that there are a few amoungst us who were not as committed as poor Imp - misunderstandings, micommunications, and some rather bad feelings are beginning to appear. I have something to say about this: Hey guys, can't we all just get along? I mean, there are so few of us compared to the general POPulation of fans, and we are often persecuted for our choice in music "Isn't that the fag with the bad toupee who wrote Cars?" (quoted to me by a local sales clerk at Tower recently) WE have to stick together! And we have to make an effort to be nice to each other, respect each other at the very least. So Imp's shirts are going to be delayed while he waits for the late ones to send thier money, I can wait, can't you? So Fred was misunderstood, can't he be forgiven? Consider how special our situation is, there is only one other artist that I know of that interacts directly with his fans in anyway like Gary does for us. (Kurt from Information Society) We are lucky, we should count our blessings, but we should NEVER resort to flames - especially on the digest! Call me a wuss peacenik if you like, but I think a little courtesy is in order. Some suggestions: Fred and Imp, if you haven't already, please try to reach an understaning. Any others who are taking sides in this debate - DON'T. We do not know all the facts, despite what Imp and Fred may post... In Future- if anyone wants to flame someone on the digest for an opinion they themselves don't agree with - take it OUTSIDE the digest. Above all, remember why we are here, and more importantly why we are NOT here. We are here to discuss Gary, trade items related to Gary, ask questions about (and receive answers from ) Gary, perhaps to organize events related to Gary. WE ARE NOT HERE TO BELITTLE EACH OTHER! Consider this: if Gary reads this digest (and Derek had told us he might) and he sees a bunch of his fans arguing and snipping at each other, what kind of message does that send? I want no part of it... Robert Trousdale ------------------------------- "I'll be the Sane to your In(fighting)" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 14:16:29 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Gary responds to the Tour Poll To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi there, Gary's response to the Tour Poll results was less than rapturous. He suspects that it was not clear what he wanted i.e. a 30 song set for the tour. The choices more reflect what people would like to hear on a live album, not necessarily at the shows themselves. We failed to distinguish the two. I know I am guilty of that myself. He was also most disappointed with the lack of response. It was quite pathetic in truth. Not even a 10% response rate. Not only was Gary disappointed but so were all who made this possible. I really am thinking it is a waste of time conducting polls because the response is so poor, especially if we are trying to elucidate the Digest perspective. We have an opportunity to let Gary know how we feel and potentially influnce his thinking and few can be bothered. It is quite sad. Specfically, Gary said: >Thanks also for your efforts on the tour poll, and to Aaron and Robert. > >With only 29 returns I must admit to feeling extremely disappointed at such >a poor response. I've had these kind of surprises before when I've asked >the Fan Club for suggestions so I wasn't expecting a huge flood but 29 was >way below even my low expectations. > >Some idea just don't happen due to lack of interest. Could you pass on my >>thanks, if possible, to the 29 and my deep, and a disappointed frown to >the >rest. I'll have to figure it out for myself after all. So most of you can consider yourselves frowned upon by Gary. I hope you are embarrassed! I'd like to add my public thanks to Aaron Hannum and Robert Eggleston as well for doing most of the work and to all who made the effort to vote. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Fellow Numanoids: I'm sure you all know of the "Unborn" soundtrack, but how many of you are aware that Gary's music appeared in a ski film? Warren Miller's film, "Born To Ski" had a soundtrack from IRS records, and included three tracks from "Outland." I'm a big Warren Miller fan (for those who don't know, he's been producing ski movies for about a hundred years), and had no idea that this film had any Numan music, but when I saw it (at Skifest in Dallas in '92, I think), about halfway through I heard the opening bars from "From Russia Infected." Talk about stopping me cold! I literally had shivers. Sadly, none of Gary's music made it to the "Born To Ski" soundtrack--just a lot of the other junk that IRS was hyping at the time. So, if you're a fan of skiing and Gary Numan, find a copy of "Born To Ski," sit back, relax, and prepare to be thrilled. (And contrary to my earlier comments, I will not offer to send out extra copies, heh heh.) Here's a few of the recent snippets: You might want to check out The Rental's _Return Of The Rentals_. If you can ignore the fact that the band is currently flavour of the month among 15,00,000 alterna-teens, it's not that bad an album. Not perfect by any means - the fact that the band's frontman is bassist with alterna-teen idols Weezer does show - but it's an interesting little curio that's a 1995 take on new-wave/synth-pop circa 1979. Lots of cheezy synths, but also (alas) lots of grinding bass. You can probably sample it in your local Tower - ours has it in the big browser booths right now. If so, check out tracks 2 and 3 and the last track (which even includes a lyric about Gary Numan - wonder how Gary feels about that :-)) --- >From an interview with Bill Nelson, where he's discussing his interest in magic, alchemy, and all that... "I'd had an interest in Aleister Crowley and his disciples. Crowley was to magic what Gary Numan was to electronic pop music. He was into power and elitism." Not quite sure what to read into that one :-) --- I was watching VH-1 last night and they had a show on called "Whatever happened to?". While (as far as I can tell - I missed the beginning of the show) Gary wasn't one of the featured artists, they used "Cars" as the theme music. --- Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. This started out as a mid price release of 15 Numan A sides and was to receive no publicity. Now, Beggars Banquet has sold the release to Polygram and it's become a rather different story. The album will now include 18 tracks - including the original mix of Cars as well as "Love Needs No Disguise" and "Stormtrooper in Drag". It will also be publicised on UK TV and there is a chance of other companies taking up the rights to distribute it in other countries. Additionally, a single is planned for release on 26 February 1996. This will be the "Cars (Premier Mix)" (the old E Reg model) and three other tracks - likely to be taken from the touring principle sessions as included on the 1990 Asylum Japanese CDs. It is not known whether the single will be released in other countries. A three track promotional CD has already been released to the media. This includes the tracks "Cars (Premier Mix)", "Are 'Friends' Electric?" and "We Are Glass". Polygram is intending to use the disco in London on 10 February as the launch party for the project and in store promotional material will be on display at the event. ---- This is looking better all the time IMO. It'll now have Gary's No. 1 version of "Cars" which I can't believe was going to be ommitted before and also the two collaborations Gary did while at BB. Renaming the original mix seems dumb. Holtz, Ph.D.) Subject: Thanks and Appologies To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) Just wanted to give a public "thanks" to Troy for his letter of support! And appologize for this whole issue getting out of hand (and getting public). I am confident that Imp has sold the extra 2 T-Shirts by now, and he must have put in many days (weeks? months?) of hard work to make the project fly. There will be no further "Flames". I mentioned a video called "Visual Numan" a few issues ago. It is, in fact, a bootleg. Its a mix of Berserker, Touring Principle, New Man Numan, and Micromusic. It's cheap enough ($40.00), but you might be better off buying the originals because it is very obviously recorded in Mono. Hope this helps. I will still look at her account from time to time so if you send me stuff on this account, it's not like I won't get it - it'll just take a bit longer, that's all... My NEW and vastly IMPROVED e-mail address is: machman@interaccess.com Feel free to start using it immediately for all your correspondance.
