I wandered into a used record store which was going out of business so everything was 99 cents. I picked up a copy of Outland, a 45 of I Die:You Die, a clear vinyl pressing of Ultravox's Sleepwalk, and few other odd and ends. The real score came the next day. I was in my hotel in Torrance and I found a CD store in the phone book a block away from me! It was called the CD Connextion. I called them up and asked if they carried Numan material. He said he had a ton of it. I was over in second. I picked up the following: Sacrafice $28 Pleasure Principle/Warriors Double CD Set $27 Gary Numan: The Collection $12 The Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983 $27 Cars CD Single ( Pretty Neat ) $12 Dream Corrosion $31 Document Series Presents Gary Numan $13 The prices seemed somewhat reasonable compared to what everyone else has been paying although I thought Dream Corrosion was a little steep. Beggers cant be choosy. I saw 'em and I bought 'em. Boy, did I buy 'em! That guy closed early that night. The pleasure principle/warriors CD was a double CD set with extra tracks. The American issues had both albums on one CD only, with no extra tracks, and horrible packaging. Very interesting. I have a lot of listening to do. There is a cd web sight that seems to have a fairly large library of music including Mr. Numan's. This URL is: http://cdnow.com Just follow the yellow brick road (there's really not a yellow brick road) once you're there and you will see. Enjoy! By the way, I also felt that a favorite list from Denver would probably not qualify for a concert in London. A top ten favorite from each, should suffice in making a quality list for a concert (or whatever else). Obviously, this will filter enough songs to make a lengthy list. A friend of mine called Danny King runs Ireland's only Gary Numan Appreciation Society called 'TELEX'.He produces two fanzines;the first is 'GHOST' which deals exclusively with Gary and the second is called 'TRANS ELECTRIC EUROPE' which is dedicated to electronic music.I'll send you more detailed info about the society and the fanzines in my next message soon. That's all for now. I'm a postdoctoral researcher into evolutionary biology at Imperial College, London, and have been a fan of Gary's since I was about 14 (I'm now 28). My older brother (also still a fan, now living in Sydney) had Living Ornaments 80, which he was playing endlessly in his room, and repeatedly hearing the intro to This Wreckage at full volume was what got me hooked. The first show I saw was at Leicester on the Warriors tour. I'm quite into jazz (because of Dick Morrissey's playing on Gary's albums: favourites are Andy Sheppard, Thelonius Monk, McCoy Tyner) and industrial folk (e.g. Ewan MacColl) as well as electronic music (the usual). I started playing sax but a combination of sensitive neighbours and no talent put paid to that. My favourite Numan album is (excluding Dream Corrosion) Berserker, with Sacrifice and Dance close behind. Favourite tracks include M.E., This Wreckage, A Child with the Ghost, I Don't Believe, Berserker, The Seed of a Lie, My Breathing, Pray, Night Talk and a couple of hundred others. My other minority hobby is that I play tiddlywinks (no, really). ================================ Andy Purvis Department of Biology Imperial College at Silwood Park Ascot, Berks SL5 7PY, U.K. Tel. 01344 294327 FAX 01344 294339 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jan 1996 06:55:52 -0800 From: m.r.p.@ix.netcom.com (Mike Przytarski ) Subject: Numan CD's To: Baum-CJB013_Joe@email.mot.com Hey dude, how's life in Motorola? BUT on the net is a place called CDDirect. You can mail order their stuff through the NET or direct call their BBS at (408) 985-8982. Set up an account and BLAM! They have EVERY Numan CD in stock and even the EP's. I order one a month or so and have had no problem. The cost is as cheap or cheaper than local. I just ordered Dream Corrosion for $26.95 (the 2 CD set) and it costs about $3.50 for shipping, more than fair for not having to drive all over to try to find it. I also like 'Outland'. I think the problem in the UK was the fact many of them hear Numan everyday, and can buy his stuff everywhere (I know I did when I was there). When you are in the U.S. its get what you can and enjoy it. You may also like 'The Skin Mechanics' and 'New Anger' which is from the same era. Personaly I have been keeping up with the NUMAN Web site to get the new dates. I would die to see him again. I saw him in the Pleasure tour in Chicago and the Telikon tour in Milwaukee, both rate as the best I have ever been to, even passing David Bowie (maybe because of the frequency). Well, thats it. Olah picked up on the Polygram promotional material at the forthcoming London disco. This material will not now be available because the album has been pushed back by six weeks from when this was arranged - was end of January, now 11 March. Here is the latest disco story straight from NU-Zone: ================================================================= This is the final update on the London Mega Numan Disco that is taking place on Saturday 10 February at Williams Wine and Ale House, Artillery Lane, E1 - just down from Liverpool Street Station. The organiser is on the verge of a nervous breakdown with the amount of interest the event is receiving. But then it's no surprise that people are keen to go - it is the first Numan disco in London since the 1994 Convention, the full Cheltenham lighting system (including RoboScans, for the first time) will be present and there will be a Fan Club stall provided by Maria Sines (John Webb's partner). Version 3 of the Asylum Fanzine may be ready in time for the event and Matthew Holbrook will also be there - so your NU-Zone feedback messages can be delivered in person. The organiser has been hard at work programming lighting sequences to mirror those used on the 1994 Sacrifice Tour. These have been tried out at conventional discos leading up to the event. Due to the delay in the release of "Premier Hits", no Polygram promotional material will be on display at the disco. However, official tour posters and leaflets will be there - and tour posters should be placed outside the venue several days beforehand. The doors open at 18:45 and the disco will commence at 19:30. Tickets are only available in advance - and only up until 5th February. If you're interested, get on the phone to +44 (0)1242 236815 in the evenings or +44 (0)1242 675726 during the day. Tickets cost four pounds and there are only 150 available - although the number must be nearing single figures by now. ================================================================= ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html machman@county.net ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jan 1996 15:49:26 -0500 (EST) From: "Vincent Attard (COM)" Subject: SACRIFICE TOUR VIDEO To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hey everyone... Maybe if people submitted songs they would particulalarly like to hear, without any regard to number (i.e. 5, 10, 17, whatever), it might generate more votes. Poll taking is a tricky business, especailly when you can't force people to vote. So email Andy at amchaffie@meto.govt.uk if you want to submit a list. Realistically, we'd need over 100 votes I think to impress Gary with the validity of the results. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Some repetition, but there's so much to choose from,it's not too surprising. Pity we don't have choices for 50 songs! 1. My Love is a Liquid 2. Films 3. You are in My Vision 4. My Name is Smith 5.
