There are no official copies of Sacrifice on video - just poor quality bootlegs. I presume that is what vattard@luna.cas.usf.edu has got. Mail me if you want to know about the track listing on any particular video. rdmyers@e2.empirenet.com was saying that the NuWORLD order page was too dark. I'll pass that one on to Gary. bhammond@du.edu was looking for a complete discography of NUMA artists. Well, various newsletters, yearbooks and tour programmes have carried some of this information. Additionally, the Numan Biography in NU-Zone includes some of this detail - and even pictures of many of the singles covers. BolanTRX@aol.com was enquiring about Babylon, Images, and Asylum. Well, Asylum was the Beggars Banquet Japanese reissue set in 1990. This covered all of their Numan material and was a superb issue - the Japanese were apparently prepared to pay a lot of money for these discs. Images are the interview albums put out by Gary every couple of years and Babylon is Gary's own series of back catalogue CDs. See previous issues of the digest for much debate about these. MCHAFFIE%NIMBUS@meto.govt.uk was asking about Techno Army. The latest I've heard is 5 February for the single and 18 March for the album. I'm sure the single date must be wrong - and I would expect it several weeks after this date. I'm afraid that Techno Army isn't really techno at all and I'm told it is more reminiscent of the Shakatak. Oh dear. Things are extremely quiet on the Castle front. I fear that they may be releasing Cars as the single - which will interfere with the Cars Premier Mix that is destined to ride extremely high in the UK chart. Here is a list of what Gary has recorded for the Techno Army album. All in all some very strange choices! Are 'Friends' Electric? (2 versions). Cars. We Are So Fragile. We Are Glass. I Die You Die. She's Got Claws. Emotion. Machine And Soul. Deadliner. A Question Of Faith. U Got The Look. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook NU-Zone http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html machman@county.net ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jan 1996 09:42:35 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Asylum/Images/Babylon To: BolanTRX@aol.com Hi, >Please forgive my ignorance in this matter, but what are the Babylon, Images, >and Asylum series CDs? They have been deleted for a while now and are very hard to track down. Volume 1 contains 4 discs, as does volume 2. Volume 3 is a single disc. Vol 1 has The Plan, Tubeway Army, Replicas and The Pleasure Principle, Vol 2 has Telekon, Dance, I, Assassin and Warriors. Each disc has the associated non album tracks and b-sides for that era. Volume 3 contains Living Ornaments 80 and part of LO 79. The missing tracks for LO 79 are bonus tracks on one of the Asylum vol 1 discs. They were lavishly packaged with all lyrics, lots of photos, discography and listing of tour schedules up to 1989. These details are spread among the three volumes. The more recent UK BB 2CD rissues contain almost the identicle tracks listings apart from on I, Assassin which has a new song - This House is Cold and the album version of We Take Mystery. Asylum omits THiC and has the extended 12" version of WTM instead. Asylums 1 & 2 went for between $45 and $100 apiece when they were easily available depending on you source. Prices may be up now because they are rare. Still for 4 full Japanese CDs, $100 is not a bad deal. At $50 it is a steal. Check out the auction by GYMnIF@aol.com copies of virtually every CD Numan has ever relased. Full track listings are in the discography at cs.uwp.edu and at various web sites. IMAGES ------ The Images series (5 double LPs (vols 1-10) and one CD (vol 11) so far) are interviews with Gary by Peter Gilbert that has documented Gary's career as it happens. Each interview covers maybe 3 years or two albums. They are illuminating and interesting in that they are not by some ignorant critic but a friend of Gary's who gets into more details than would be possible in a single 30 min interview. They also contain excerpts of songs from the period being discussed and often include versions unavailable elsewhere. these are available only through the UK Fan Club. BABYLON -------- The Babylon series are a recent (1995) limited edition UK Fan Club issue collecting most of Gary's post Beggars Banquet 12" and b-sides on a series of 7 CD EPs. They are available via NuWORLD http://www.numan.co.uk which should be able to hanlde credit card ordering in early February. The series means that only a handful of Numan songs have not been issued on CD. The Babylon 8 Poll was an attempt to see what of the remaining tracks fans would like most to see on a potential Babylon 8, should that ever appear. I am hoping to convince him to order Numan materials for his London stores Music Video Exchange as well as for my store here in the states. If you know of these stores, please go to them and request that they order Numan if they don't already. I'm really eager to have some in my store as when I play any Numan stuff, especially Sacrifice, people comment on how they like it or some recognize it as Numan. They usually ask if that particular recording is available, but I sadly tell them no. All i have is re-issue 45's of Cars b/w I Die: You Die (from Gotham Distribution). I was recently in L.A. and Anaheim, CA a week or so ago for the NAMM convention (National Association of Music Manufacturers) in relation to my position as artist relations director for Zendrum. I was hoping to hunt down some record stores while there, but hadn't the time. I may be out that way sometime soon (I hope) and would be greatful for any clues as where to start looking. Send suggestions to my e-mail addy listed below. Re: Tour Polls Some time ago I had stated that since I had never seen Gary live I would be thrilled to see him play Mary had a little lamb, and go home happy. And the reason I did not contribute to the poll is like many American fans who may never see him live (I hope that 96 will see him in the States) felt it was pointless to contribute. However, I've decided to try a late entry if only to assist in helping those who do get to see him. I am listing what I would like to hear live, so forgive the redundancy for those fortunate enough to have seen him before.... in no particular order: 1. Jo the Waiter 2. Something's in the House 3. The Dream Police 4. Me! I disconnect from you 5. Are 'friends' electric 6. Praying to the Aliens 7. It must have been years 8. Down in the park 9. Complex 10. Tracks 11. Cars 12. This Wreckage 13. Please push no more 14. I die: you die 15. Stories 16. Boys like me 17. My car slides parts 1 and 2 18. My shadow in vain 19. Music for chameleons 20. Love like a ghost 21. We take mystery 22. White boys and heros 23. That's too bad 24. The iceman comes 25. A child with the ghost 26. This is new love 27. I still remember 28. Your fascination 29. Strange Charm 30. Voix (alternates to make up for redundant titles) 31. Devotion 32. You walk in my soul 33. Magic of course i'm assuming he's going to play something from sacrifice hence the reason i didn't list them till now..... Also there are many other Numan songs (his whole catalog) that I'd like to hear, but those are some of my faves....the Cars version should be the 93 sprint or some other new version, maybe acoustic with real violins. Anyway, there is my two cents (or what ever its value after taxes and considering inflationary prices). By for now and I hope the line counters don't get too annoyed with me.... The Images series began as (very) long play double albums that are now continuing as cd's. They are basically Gary's semi-autobiography on vinyl/cd. Each one covers a range of his life and they're very interesting, particularly the one covering the round-the-world flight I think. Very haunting music and very interesting dialogue. get them!!! The Asylum series are two quad-cd's and one double cd. They were released by Beggars Banquet as Japanese imports mid-80's time and were a good money spinner for them I think. Each quad-series covers fours albums from The Plan to The Pleasure Principle and from Telekon to Warriors. They also have extra tracks such as B-sides on. The double one contains Living Ornaments 79 and 80, minus some tracks which are included as extra tracks on Asylum 1. I believe they were intended to contain every Beggars track Gary had ever done. Babylon are CD EPs (somewhat shorter in time than full length CDs) that have been released by the UK Fan Club over the last two years or so. They contain many Numan tracks, and versions of these, which had yet to appear on CD. Read earlier Digests for discussions of track listings on the existing releases, as well as which Numan tracks have yet to appear on CD, for the next possible issue of Babylon. I think they are up to 6 Babylon CDEPs so far. Someone correct me please! 2. Images are Numan interview albums that the UK Fan Club have been making available on a regular basis over the last ten or more years. The most recent editions have been released on CD as well as vinyl and cassette. I think they are up to issue 11/12 or maybe 13. 3. Asylum are CD LPs that were released in Japan about 6-8 years ago. They contained all (almost?) of the Beggars Banquet catalogue, including B-Sides and live tracks. Each of Asylum 1 and 2 were 4 CD boxes (for a total of 8 CD) containing the studio albums + extra tracks. Asylum 3, a a single CD box, contains most of the Living Ornaments live tracks, with the missing tracks found on Asylum 1 or 2. A 3" CD single also accompanied this series. (I have this whole series and it cost me a fortune to get, when it just came out.) For Babylon and Images, you should check out the NU-World (Gary's own) WWW page, from where you can order these items. The Asylum series was discontinued within about 10 months of the release date, making it collecteable. I would be glad to put it together, but having done projects like this in the past, I can honestly say it takes awhile. It also got me thinking about the Digest. Throughout the time the Digest has been in existance I have always wondered how many fans there are in the US, and what proportion of that number subscribe to the Digest. I got a better handle on that this week with info from Tony Webb, Gary's manager/father. He told me that US sales for New Anger and Outland were in the 35,000 to 40,000 range according to IRS Records. Not all of those will be fans but it does show there is a significant number willing to support Gary over here even with no advertising. It also means that the Digest reaches maybe 100th of this estimated US fan base. It's a beginning, I suppose. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. And= =20 sometimes, he is unable to locate anything, since he has no help from those= =20 he does business with. Follow me so far? Well, he'd happily be making this request on his own behalf, but is unable= =20 at this time and timing is essential. So, I submit this request on his= behalf: My cousin will soon be traveling to London on business. It happens to be=20 the week BEFORE the tour kicks off! Which breaks his heart, but this is to= =20 be expected -- since the hope of seeing Gary for an American is a mere dream= =20 at this point! His request is for assistance in locting shops in which he= =20 may be able to locate Gary Numan material for his (our) collection(s). =20 ANYONE who can assist PLEASE contact: cfausett@holli.com =AB-- (Chris being my cousin) or tlwalter@holli.com with said information. Any help will be greatly appreciated. He and/or I= =20 will submit future posts for assistance with various other locations around= =20 the world. He goes to Moscow soon, and several places in the Orient -- so= =20 help will be needed there as well. Thank you for your time. Chris is responsible for introducing me to Mr.=20 Numan's work, so I owe him more than I could ever repay, but I do what I= can... Thanks again, Troy L. Got some addresses and phone numbers? Send 'em my way. Feel free to embellish your submission - tell us of your experiences with the dealer in question. Just bear in mind that the audience will be international in scope, so be sure that anything you send will fit in... in other words, don't send me the name, address and phone number of your local dealer unless you know that that dealer is prepared to ship merchandise to customers around the country, continent, and/or world. I wandered into a used record store which was going out of business so everything was 99 cents. I picked up a copy of Outland, a 45 of I Die:You Die, a clear vinyl pressing of Ultravox's Sleepwalk, and few other odd and ends. The real score came the next day. I was in my hotel in Torrance and I found a CD store in the phone book a block away from me! It was called the CD Connextion. I called them up and asked if they carried Numan material. He said he had a ton of it. I was over in second. I picked up the following: Sacrafice $28 Pleasure Principle/Warriors Double CD Set $27 Gary Numan: The Collection $12 The Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983 $27 Cars CD Single ( Pretty Neat ) $12 Dream Corrosion $31 Document Series Presents Gary Numan $13 The prices seemed somewhat reasonable compared to what everyone else has been paying although I thought Dream Corrosion was a little steep. Beggers cant be choosy. I saw 'em and I bought 'em. Boy, did I buy 'em! That guy closed early that night. The pleasure principle/warriors CD was a double CD set with extra tracks. The American issues had both albums on one CD only, with no extra tracks, and horrible packaging. Very interesting. I have a lot of listening to do. There is a cd web sight that seems to have a fairly large library of music including Mr. Numan's. This URL is: http://cdnow.com Just follow the yellow brick road (there's really not a yellow brick road) once you're there and you will see. Enjoy! By the way, I also felt that a favorite list from Denver would probably not qualify for a concert in London. A top ten favorite from each, should suffice in making a quality list for a concert (or whatever else). Obviously, this will filter enough songs to make a lengthy list. A friend of mine called Danny King runs Ireland's only Gary Numan Appreciation Society called 'TELEX'.He produces two fanzines;the first is 'GHOST' which deals exclusively with Gary and the second is called 'TRANS ELECTRIC EUROPE' which is dedicated to electronic music.I'll send you more detailed info about the society and the fanzines in my next message soon. That's all for now. I'm a postdoctoral researcher into evolutionary biology at Imperial College, London, and have been a fan of Gary's since I was about 14 (I'm now 28). My older brother (also still a fan, now living in Sydney) had Living Ornaments 80, which he was playing endlessly in his room, and repeatedly hearing the intro to This Wreckage at full volume was what got me hooked. The first show I saw was at Leicester on the Warriors tour. I'm quite into jazz (because of Dick Morrissey's playing on Gary's albums: favourites are Andy Sheppard, Thelonius Monk, McCoy Tyner) and industrial folk (e.g. Ewan MacColl) as well as electronic music (the usual). I started playing sax but a combination of sensitive neighbours and no talent put paid to that. My favourite Numan album is (excluding Dream Corrosion) Berserker, with Sacrifice and Dance close behind. Favourite tracks include M.E., This Wreckage, A Child with the Ghost, I Don't Believe, Berserker, The Seed of a Lie, My Breathing, Pray, Night Talk and a couple of hundred others. My other minority hobby is that I play tiddlywinks (no, really). ================================ Andy Purvis Department of Biology Imperial College at Silwood Park Ascot, Berks SL5 7PY, U.K. Tel. 01344 294327 FAX 01344 294339 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jan 1996 06:55:52 -0800 From: m.r.p.@ix.netcom.com (Mike Przytarski ) Subject: Numan CD's To: Baum-CJB013_Joe@email.mot.com Hey dude, how's life in Motorola? BUT on the net is a place called CDDirect. You can mail order their stuff through the NET or direct call their BBS at (408) 985-8982. Set up an account and BLAM! They have EVERY Numan CD in stock and even the EP's. I order one a month or so and have had no problem. The cost is as cheap or cheaper than local. I just ordered Dream Corrosion for $26.95 (the 2 CD set) and it costs about $3.50 for shipping, more than fair for not having to drive all over to try to find it. I also like 'Outland'. I think the problem in the UK was the fact many of them hear Numan everyday, and can buy his stuff everywhere (I know I did when I was there). When you are in the U.S. its get what you can and enjoy it. You may also like 'The Skin Mechanics' and 'New Anger' which is from the same era. Personaly I have been keeping up with the NUMAN Web site to get the new dates. I would die to see him again. I saw him in the Pleasure tour in Chicago and the Telikon tour in Milwaukee, both rate as the best I have ever been to, even passing David Bowie (maybe because of the frequency). Well, thats it. Olah picked up on the Polygram promotional material at the forthcoming London disco. This material will not now be available because the album has been pushed back by six weeks from when this was arranged - was end of January, now 11 March. Here is the latest disco story straight from NU-Zone: ================================================================= This is the final update on the London Mega Numan Disco that is taking place on Saturday 10 February at Williams Wine and Ale House, Artillery Lane, E1 - just down from Liverpool Street Station. The organiser is on the verge of a nervous breakdown with the amount of interest the event is receiving. But then it's no surprise that people are keen to go - it is the first Numan disco in London since the 1994 Convention, the full Cheltenham lighting system (including RoboScans, for the first time) will be present and there will be a Fan Club stall provided by Maria Sines (John Webb's partner). Version 3 of the Asylum Fanzine may be ready in time for the event and Matthew Holbrook will also be there - so your NU-Zone feedback messages can be delivered in person. The organiser has been hard at work programming lighting sequences to mirror those used on the 1994 Sacrifice Tour. These have been tried out at conventional discos leading up to the event. Due to the delay in the release of "Premier Hits", no Polygram promotional material will be on display at the disco. However, official tour posters and leaflets will be there - and tour posters should be placed outside the venue several days beforehand. The doors open at 18:45 and the disco will commence at 19:30. Tickets are only available in advance - and only up until 5th February. If you're interested, get on the phone to +44 (0)1242 236815 in the evenings or +44 (0)1242 675726 during the day. Tickets cost four pounds and there are only 150 available - although the number must be nearing single figures by now. ================================================================= ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Matthew Holbrook http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html machman@county.net ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jan 1996 15:49:26 -0500 (EST) From: "Vincent Attard (COM)" Subject: SACRIFICE TOUR VIDEO To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hey everyone... I got mine on the 19th also... amazing, eh? It wasn't even 15 minutes after putting one of them on that I got a 'cool shirt!' comment. Not that I would disagree with them or anything...;) cheers, cb Cyberspace Buddha /(o\ Not your fathers buddha cb@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu \o)/ What's on, your mind? http://ccwf.cc.utexas.edu/~cb ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jan 1996 07:31:42 -0800 From: dr13@ix.netcom.com (Terry Burke ) Subject: Teez & Tourz To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) Greetings, Noise from one of the lurkers... First, hats off to Imp for the super job of organizing and producing top notch t-shirts, bravo! Now what about those bumper stickers that everyone is mad for? Second...enough lip about those of us who did not participate in the tour set list poll. I did not vote for 2 reasons being that (1) I can't scratch up enough extra dough to hop the Concorde across the pond to attend a concert, and (2) I honestly do not know enough Numan material to vote for a set of music. Perhaps my knowledge will expand when NuWorld begins to accept plastic and I can charge up a storm. Until then I remain seated. I've been picking up a Numan CD or two when I can, but have never run across any of these in either the chain or specialty CD/Record/Tape stores in the NE part of the US. I'd be curious to know what's on these and how they fit into the scheme of Gary's music. Thanks! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jan 1996 09:02:54 +0000 (GMT) From: Andy Subject: tour poll To: numan@cs.uwp.edu If your going to send a tour poll to me, use amchaffie@meto.govt.uk rather than mchaffie%nimbus@meto.govt.uk Craig Burrows...yup, Moral and Metal are basically the same song ! Anna Grey - Remember the UK is a small country, and we dont really have college radio. There are a lot of local and independant stations, but basically Radio 1 is the most listened to national Radio station, and its run by the BBC. I dunno, Im sure Gary should get back into the nation's psyche by perhaps going via John Peel, and doing more sessions. After all, hes the most highly respected British DJ, and was instrumental in breaking Gary the first time round... Joe Baum. Im gonna create an account on UNM-MOO under the name of Deadliner. Keep a look out, but as Im in the UK I'll be on in the middle of your night... Matthew..do you know of a release date / record label for Techno Army ? I hope it actually is teal hard techno, cos some of Gary's collaborations in the past have turned out to be pretty mediocre middle of the road stuff... Cheers.. Clearly the interest or appropriateness in voting is in question for many people, and perhaps asking for 30 songs was too much. Maybe if people submitted songs they would particulalarly like to hear, without any regard to number (i.e. 5, 10, 17, whatever), it might generate more votes. Poll taking is a tricky business, especailly when you can't force people to vote. So email Andy at amchaffie@meto.govt.uk if you want to submit a list. Realistically, we'd need over 100 votes I think to impress Gary with the validity of the results. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H.
