To: numan@cs. uwp.edu Just received my copy of Dream Corrosion in the mail the other day (along with Planet P's Pink World). Seven days from order to play time and I never had to leave the house to get them. GOD I love the net! Speaking of Dream Corrosion, I now realize why I have remained a fan for 20 years now (GOD I feel old!). Even though Gary has changed his music around, he still makes GREAT live albums. I have always felt that change is important for a artist (look at David Bowie). It allows them to keep the fans involved because you never really know what the next album will bring. True you may not like what a album has in it, but each one is differe nt (for the most part). I also really like the fact that he has brushed the dust off a lot of good older songs. Like David Bowie I think Gary has realized that playing the same songs over and over gets a little rough af ter a while for all. I know I liked the varity in the album. Speaking of live albums. I think Gary is the only one who does one after every tour. Maybe he realizes how much we need it here to give us the feeling of being over on the other side of the big pond. Maybe its because he realizes how much energy he puts into a show and it comes through. Or maybe its for the money. I really don't care as long as he keeps doing it. I read Garys Q&A today and LOVED it! I just found out about this zine a month or so ago, and its the first Q&A I recieved. I now have even more respect for Gary knowing that he has time to work the net and his web site as well as all his other many daily duties. Nothing makes me happier than knowing that he still realizes that its us that helps keep him going. Speaking of this zine, its kinda funny that in the early 80's I went to UWP. Remember how I used to play Gary all the time in the war room. In fact once we had 'I die, You die' really cranked and a prof came by and aske d us to turn it down because it was killing his plants (I still like the song though, and so do my plants). Who knows, maybe back then we were sowing the seeds during all those late night games of inter-terminal Star Tre k. Back to the Q&A section, I was amused to read that Gary still liked burgers. I happened to meat Gary twice in my life. The first time was in Bristol back in the late 70's. I was in the service then and had just stopped in for a bite. Gary had also stopped in and sat near me. I made a comment about why did the brits put mayo and vineger on their food. He noticed I was a yank and we started to talk about American Burgers and music. A real nice time. Later in the early 80's (81 I think). I went to the Teletour in Milwaukee WI. Afterwards I chanced it and went to the Burger joint near the MECCA. Sure enough he showed up to snarf some burgers. Sinc e the place was packed (his group and others), I invited him to sit at my table as long as he didn't put vineger on his chips. He looked at me funny, then start to laugh as I reminded him of our last meeting (Big deal to me, a chance meeting for him). We had another conversation about music (shorter though because he was tired and had to do a gig in Chicago the next day). The one thing about that last conversation though Gary, your fears about how other groups from England were doing was not warrented (as I told you then). See what Adam Ant, the Police, Depeche Mode are doing now (well, m aybe DM is still a force). You are still around and kicking. One last thing before I sign off. Does Gary still do those big stage productions for his concerts? I remember he once mentioned that he lost money on every tour because of how expensive the stage sets were and such comp ared to the ticket costs. Seems that his idea then was you should get what you paid for and then some. Still remember him walking through the fog and lasers from between the pillers in the Teletour with his silver axe s lung over his shoulder. Kinda like a modern day warrior. When he started to play 'I die, You die' the place went nuts. I know I got my $6.00 worth that night. Well, thats enough for now. Take care all, and remember.... You know, I hate to ask......... But are 'your' friends electric? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Feb 1996 11:27:08 +0000 (GMT) From: Andy Subject: Babylon To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Can someone tell me what these Babylonj albums are, where I can get them, and what is on them ? After taking a look at both sites, Gary appears to be collecting royalties mainly from BMI for his Atco and IRS songs, even tracks that were not released in the uSA (e.g. Children). The two most interesting snippets were on ASCAP. Gary is credited and receives royalties for "cues" i.e musical accompaniment, to two movies "In the Heat of Passion" and "Ski School". We know about "Ski Patrol" (which wasn't listed) but I am curious if "Ski School" is just a typo or a different movie. Any ideas? Anyone seen "In the Heat of Passion"? Just read the interview in Mojo magazine. It was a bit short, but any = coverage is good I suppose. He is a quick trivia question for people. I have the video "Newman = Numan" with contains "We take Mystery", however, I'm sure that this was = not the video I saw on Top of the Pops when the song went straight into = the UK charts. I distinctly remember Gary with blonde hair driving = around LA(?) in a Jeep with some other people and then singing on a = stage. Any comments? It's been bugging me for years. I got my T-Shirt the other day. I can't believe it only took 7 days = surface mail. Many thanks to Dangerimp et al who made it possible. See you all at Hammersmith. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu hello to everyone. quick story: self-professed numanoids THE RENTALS were scheduled to make an in-store appearance at newbury comics in Harvard Square (cambridge, MA USA) today. on a whim, i grabbed a Numanews Tshirt, and hopped my ride into the square. the very moment i walked into the building, i found myself standing before matt, lead singer for THE RENTALS, who was en route to the coffee shop. "excuse me," i started, "but are you REALLY a gary numan fan?" "why, yes i am..." he said with some trepidation. "i am as well, and i belong to the gary numan digest. we decided to make some Tshirts..." i said, reaching into my bag. "wow." "would you like a shirt?" "yeah, that'd be great," he said. "gary himself has one of these babies." "really?" he asked, incredulously. "this is great!" "yeah. if you have access to the internet, you should check it out." i could tell by his wide eyes and smirk that he may not PRESENTLY be online. but one never knows... "i'm matt," he offered, extending his hand. "benjamin. nice to meet you," i answered while shaking his hand. anyway, i know those of you who haven't received their shirts yet are cursing my name aloud. "a fucking rock star gets one before me?! for FREE?!! god damn that guy!" but that's ok. i'm no stranger being the bad guy. the devil. the imp. ]:) take care. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
