As #1.1 was a test with no content, this issue is truly the 200th issue. And 1.199 was the largest we have had without repetition of posts or previous Digests. Looks like people were scared to post in 200 after 199's behemoth size. I don't think it likely we'll have many that size for a while as it was a coincidence the DIGEST ASKS GARY session and the FAQ update hit the same issue. Here's to another 200! That means 5 singles have not had the 7" version on CD before. And "I Still Remember" RSPCA (a beautiful reworking of the orignal version) is only on Babylon 3, i.e not very easily available to most. Add to this the fact that the 17 tracks listed would only come to just over 63 minutes, Gary could really create fan interest by adding a forthcoming single from "Exile". This would give fans a new song and 5/6 new edits on CD for the first time in addition to it being an attractive collection of his single releases. The "Exile" track should not hurt sales of the single which should have new b-sides fans will want and it is unlikely that casual buyers would get the single anyway. An "Exile" single on a collection like this may encourge new discoverers of Gary to get "Exile". I feel it important that Gary follow up on what I expect to be a decent success with "Premier Hits" so that people can see he has produced a lot of deserving music since 1983 and be led to the post 1983 albums via such a compilation. While some may think this would be flooding the market with too many releases I worry that Gary could fade back into obscurity before Numa have a chance to build on any success, unless they get things rolling and lined up. I don't think Gary should worry about the number of releases considering that we are only only talking about a handful of releases. Some of it is not for the fans per se but to try and attract new fans. I proposed the idea of a 17 track collection to Gary in December but he did not comment on it. Despite needing permission from IRS for 3 tracks, I think IRS would welcome a compilation as it could stir interest in their Numan albums which are now deleted. Comments anyone? Is anybody strongly opposed to such an idea? If so, why? I intend to broach the subject again with Gary soon. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Sorry I lost Your name ... Lately I got the "Automatic" CD (GN with Sharpe) for about 14DM = 5,5 pounds (from PRO-MARKT). I dont like that music very much, but anyway ... I also ordered the soundtrack CD "Human" at WOM Nuernberg via a holland importer/distrib. called BERTUS (CD 303955). Looking very forward to !!! Hope It dont takes month, because then I can get it in the UK while visiting garys '96 tour ... Another time! I will be the first who offers its ASYLUM 3 (Jap) CD (which is for me the best live CD ever) in order to keep save that the original Living Ornaments 79/80 recordings are taken for the new release if the technical possi- bility exist. I can not believe that it shall not be possible to take the digital data from an existing CD as source for the production of new. Beggars Banquet owns all rights, so where should be the problem? Please tell me or better the digest, if I forgot something important! Last I saw the new sampler "electrocity" Vol.7 (Aus- fahrt Rec/Efa 06329 CD) which includes a next Numan song, but not a classic one, it is "The seed of a lie" from "Sacrifice" for my surpise. Smile! We >know about "Ski Patrol" (which wasn't listed) but I am curious if "Ski >School" is just a typo or a different movie. Oddly enough, 'Ski School' played on TV last night (Sunday evening). I didn't watch it, but as I changed channels at 11HPM to watch the news, I caught the end of the credits for the movie, and saw Gary's name listed with the song 'Devious'. I did check the tv schedule and the movie was titled 'Ski School', with a release date of 1990, and I doubt very much that the same movie would have different titles in the US and Canada, so it must be a different movie than 'Ski Patrol'. There must be a movie Web page somewhere that could confirm to us that there are in fact two distinct 'Ski *' movies. According to the Internet Movie Database, both movies exist: Ski Patrol, USA 1990, directed by Richard Correll, and Ski School, Canada 1991, directed by Damian Lee. So why did my tv schedule mention Ski School (1990)??? Well at least now we know there ARE 2 different movies. I also found the following interesting info: Gary is credited for two tracks in the movie Dangerous Minds (1995): i) Cars (sample) ii) Put Ya Back Into It, written by Gary, Tre Black & Micheal J. Powell I can only guess that dear ol'Tre sampled some Cars or other Numan stuff for this song, cause we would have heard about this before. Maybe someone should ask Gary if he's getting any royalties for this movie. I have to get back to work now... ********************************************************************** Richard V. Ok people.............................., There is something I need to talk to you all about, concerns an idea that popped into my head some time ago. What does everybody think of Gary doing some Industrial stuff? I think he could make some progress in that area. There is a large crowd following that type of music right now, and I think Gary would fit in. Go ahead Gary, bite into the Industrial vein. Now about the Chicagoland Numan Party, (Sat, March 9), I really need to know how many "oids" are interested in attending. Please let me know if you want to come, within the next week, so I can get the plans underway. Please email me directly. ..bye for now DEANA NUMAN. :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 1996 17:47:26 -0800 From: bmcgibbo@ix.netcom.com (Brian McGibbon ) Subject: Gary Numan Mailing List. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings! I am writing in respose to some queries by Dave Datta when he put my name on the Numan mailing list. The responses are as follows: My name is Brian McGibbon and I live in Tampa, Florida In addition to Gary Numan, my favorite artists include DEVO, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division and Kraftwerk. I have been a Gary Numan fan for about six to eight months now. I have been known to pick up a guitar from time-to-time and can also play a little bass and synthesizer. I really haven't done much musically lately (except listen) and hope inspiration will one day strike again. I am also working with Robert Eggleston who runs the Are 'Friends' Electric site in organizing a Gary Numan IRC channel. Full details are available at Robert's site--check 'em out. Thanks and I am looking forward to receiving some Numan information. It all makes perfect sense now. I have been a devoted fan for over 16 years, but find it rather strange that in all those years I never ran across the original 1984 Berserker release. Never saw it, never heard of it. In fact I didn't even know it existed until I began reading the Digest awhile back when everyone was begging for the re- release (blatant Internet plug). I had been buying everything as it came out over the years (or so I thought), and ALWAYS check out the "N" section every time I visit a music store. Maybe the stores I frequented back in 1984 (in Ohio) didn't have imports, perhaps sold out, or maybe I was just "absent" that year. Odd, isn't it? Before asking the group (and keeping with good Net etiquette), I did indeed check out the FAQ, all of the previous Digest Q&A sessions, and (okay only 3) web pages. It is so hard to keep up with the influx of Numan news lately! Although I did find tons of info. on the 1991 FC release, no where did I see anything about the '84 original release. Though I must admit to not looking closely enough as I was assuming the original release would also be on CD, not thinking that it could have possibly been a vinyl only release as CDs were just coming out then (how soon we forget :-) !) Needless to say, Berserker has become one of the "gems" in my collection. My many thanks to everyone for enlightening me (blatant Digest plug). I feel like I have found a missing link! I think Child With A Ghost is amazing, and also like Cold Warning and The God Film. This Is New Love ?? Maybe I'm not seeing what some of you see in this song. Oh well, to each his own.
