My preferences in music are guitar and keyboard based sounds, thus I enjoy most Rock groups as well as keyboard artists of the past and present such as Vangelis, Jarre. The only Numan song I've really heard is Cars which was quite impressive and I can't wait to listen to some more of his work! Nothing else really comes to mind apart from the fact that I'm a student at Glamorgan University and that I've loved Cars since I heard it oh so many years ago!!! Garland" Subject: Current Numan Optimism To: numan@cs.uwp.edu These are 'heady times' for Gary Numan fans. Certainly, here in the UK there hasn't been so much interest, or indeed critical acclaim, for years and years. Gary's name is suddenly the name that bands are quoting as being an influence, whilst the prospect of Gary being on the 'White Room' TV show is truly excellent. The 'White Room' is THE music show here in the UK at the moment, and for Gary to appear on that is a big indication of the esteem that he is currently held. I have already been corresponding with other digest subscribers about meeting on the tour. It will be good to meet like-minded fans at a time when Gary's popularity is on the rise again. This is now almost impossible to find so if there were other copies around, let us know as I am sure many would like the CD, especially at such a good price. I understand your lack of enthusiasm. It's not exciting, intriguing, imaginitive or anything we expect from Gary but it does have it's moments. >I will be the first who offers its ASYLUM 3 (Jap) CD >(which is for me the best live CD ever) in order to keep >save that the original Living Ornaments 79/80 recordings >are taken for the new release if the technical possi- >bility exist. >I can not believe that it shall not be possible to take >the digital data from an existing CD as source for the >production of new. Beggars Banquet's goal for the new double CD of Living Ornaments was to fill each disc with 74 minutes of the concerts rather than the 40+ that originally came out on vinyl & cassette. They have the Living Ornaments 79 tapes from Gary's Touring Principle but the LO 80 Teletour tapes haven't been found. Hence they are going to put 74 minutes of the Wembley Farewell concert in the set instead. Asylum 3 has the vinyl tracks of LO 80 and some of the LO 79 tracks but it is merged to sound like one concert. BB wanted to include other tracks not included on the orignal LO 80 release. I think many would like to have 74 mins of the Wembley show rather than an extra 30 minutes from the Teletour. I wonder what they'll omit from the 2 hour Wembley show? >Last I saw the new sampler "electrocity" Vol.7 (Aus- >fahrt Rec/Efa 06329 CD) which includes a next Numan >song, but not a classic one, it is "The seed of a lie" >from "Sacrifice" for my surpise. Smile! Great song and a surprising choice considering "Sacrifice" was an UK release. I wonder if Gary knows it has been included as he should get a royalty for that one. I have even sent copies of this magazine to friends in England who have trouble getting it. Your articles are well written and they cover many artisits who I really like. However, I was quite disturbed to discover some Gary Numan bashing in the LIVE! column of the March '96 issue of Spin. Apparently journalist Chuck Eddy made a sad remark about Gary Numan during his review of a Rentals live show. The quote was: "The Rentals are more human than Numan-Gary that is." This bothers me for several reasons, first of which is that it is totally untrue. Im sure Mr. Eddy is an experienced journalist, and it is nothing personal, but he is terribly misinformed when it comes to Gary Numan. Gary has consistantly put out songs, singles, CDs, movie scores, etc for over 15 years, which has been about the period he wasn't covered in America. This is a man who still makes music and performs concerts in the midst of being constantly beat over the head by reporters and critics. Gary is here to stay and is on the verge of signing a record deal which hopefully will bring him to America again. In addition, the Human/Numan metaphor is over 15 years old now and quite overdone. Just a suggestion, but it may be a good idea if Spin magazine investigates over the dozen Internet sites dedicated to Gary Numan. I think you will find that he is far from a has-been and quite, quite Human. The following web sites would be good start: Nu-Zone - All You Will Ever Need To Read ( www.county.net/machman/) This site is maintained by Mathew Holbrook who is a very professional and well knowledgable man....and a great guy to talk to. Nu-World- The official Gary Numan Web Site ( www.numan.co.uk ) This site is maintained by Gary Numan himself and his family ( who also run the fan club) You will find that Gary's following is very strong and I sincerely hope Spin magazine will change its mind about Mr. Numan. Just a thought, but I think a story on Gary would a great thing to read. He's is quite busy now going on tour and recording a new CD. There would be a lot of interesting material to cover. Thank you very much for your time. Just for demographics, I am a 30 year old mechanical engineer living in New Jersey. My wife Terri also shares this view and is a 31 year old Mechanical engineer. I think he could make some progress in that area. There is a large crowd following that type of music right now, and I think Gary would fit in. Go ahead Gary, bite into the Industrial vein." < although it is hardly my place to speak for gary, my feeling is, i don't think so. not so many years ago, before the word 'alternative' was virtually synonymous with 'grunge' and before the alternative guitar experienced it's un-invited renaissance, i was a Disciple to the Machines, and was about as deep into the depths of industrial attitude as one of flesh n' bones can be; those were the days of solar enemy, kode 4, bigod 20, consolidated, front line assembly, skinny puppy and early ministry and NIN. but then, as nirvana was poisoning the water hole on the pop charts, alien jourgenson released 'psalm 69' and changed the face of a style that has previously been dominated by cold, hard electronics. and then his insidious influence bled onto trent reznor's impressionable industrial facade, the corrosive effect of which was the affront called 'broken'. gone was trent's faithful emax, replaced by a guitar. it was a sad, sad thing. those of us who survived psyches intact had to be reconstituted with early techno, which more or less did the trick, but only to a point... i have to admit, i don't know what 'industrial' is doing these days, but it isn't what industrial was when industrial was industrial, between 4 and 10 years ago. but more importantly, gary numan is, and always has, done his own thing. he's had inspirations and played the trends in his own way, but his allure is his ability to make music that can't be cloned. too much music these days is a rehash of yesterday's big noise, and it gets monotonous; gary will do as gary does, and i think industrial (whatever that is now) is too far removed from that. i don't, BTW, want to sound like i'm harshing; my disappointment with the evolution of industrial music is not a condemnation of those who still enjoy it. i, myself, made the transition to other electronic musics, and gary is now employing some of those devices, such as the hiphop beatloop. all bow down. and, quoth david g.fred: > "...a journalist at SPIN magazine made a less than flattering remark about Gary during his review of a Rentals live show! The CRIMINAL quote "The Rentals are more human than Numan-Gary that is." < i'm not sure i see the problem here. i don't know the rentals, though i understand (largely through imp's post) that they are fans of gary. still, they are the rentals and not gary numan. perhaps the reviewer was merely noting that they don't affect the same 'mechanical' attitude gary has/does. but more importantly, your blurb is out of context, so i don't know what point this guy was making one way or the other. from what i can tell, this seems more a description (by contrast) of the rentals' music than a harsh critique of gary's music, but i just can't tell. i would urge people to read the full review in question before sending spin-online a packet of emailbombs. but, if it turns out that this guy has an anti-gary agenda... well, then we mobilise. thanks for hearing me out. BTW, any hardcore numandoids in connecticut? let me know. end of line. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Feb 1996 11:08:27 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Vengence? Hmmm. Is that such a slight? Gary is known best in the USA for his machine music style with "Cars" so Chuck Eddy's comment maybe be a reference to the Rentals having a more human/softer side than Gary's machine musicto which the Rentals are being compared. Personally, I don't find this offensive, especially if you compare it to the vitriol slung around by the UK music press. Filling Spin's email box claiming harm might piss them off so that if Gary does make a return to the US they may feel less likely to give Gary a fair shake.
