Thank you again to everyone who bid on my auction. At this point, only a few people have not sent in money for stuff they bid on, and that's cool. I will either do another auction or a set sale next month. A few new things. When I went on vacation I did some record shopping and found some interesting things. Ideally, it would be both, but that isn't always possible. What does everyone think? Tony R. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I agree with Deana's (Numan) recent thoughts on Gary doing industrial. Industrial music (i.e. Nine Inch Nails, Front 242, etc.) has been around a little while now and has a growing following in the States. Alternative may be a "new" mainstream of sorts. If you look back at Gary's musical career, he's experimented with his sound over many years, but has always had a certain "Numan-ness" to his songs. Nobody can say "All of Gary's stuff sounds alike" for this reason IMHO. I'm sure all of us have our favorites although many would be different from person to person. After all, we're all fans of Gary Numan, but we're not always going like it all the same. In any case, I believe Sacrifice may be as close to an industrial sound as Gary has had, but it's not quite the sounds of NIN or 242. I personally think it would be GREAT if Gary's next album dabbled a bit more with aggressive percussion and he made a comeback with that sound in America. Indeed, NIN did a cover of "Physical" by Adam Ant and Adam Ant returned the favor by doing a NIN tune on his last tour. As a matter of fact, I've heard a return of some old synth tunes lately making a re-appearance with new bands and getting much air play here. I look forward, for example, to the upcoming tribute album by Beggars Banquet, especially the NIN cover of "Metal". New groups, industrial or otherwise, can only further Gary's own career by coming forth with covers of his tracks and paying tribute to the man largely responsible for the synth sound of the early '80s and beyond. None of us could ever tell Gary what his next sound should be like, but if I had Gary's ear, I would ask him to consider an industrial-type sound to possibly reach some new listeners. Just a thought or two from...The Machman. P.S. Sorry if I babbled a bit :-) ------------------------------ Date: 22 Feb 96 09:00:39 EST From: Sean Francis <100557.3713@compuserve.com> Subject: Interesting Email Accounts To: "INTERNET:numan@cs.uwp.edu" Digesters, This mail is about Compuserve. As all you Compuservers may know, very shortly we'll be able to use names as our email address rather than the meaningless numbers. I was wondering if any of you have also registered Numanesque email names. I tried to get sean@compuserve.com, but that had already gone. Then I thought, why not have a Numan related one. I didn't try to register numan@compuserve.com, so I don't know if that one has gone or not. I chose moral@compuserve.com as it's a favourite song and I happen to (still) be working out the guitar part for it. BTW, any help on this would be greatly appreciated - it starts off with E maj, then changes to C maj, except it doesn't sound 'high' enough, so I think the second chord is C maj plus a top G (3rd. fret, top E string). But I could be wrong ! I've worked out most of the rest of the song (just in case you thought I'd only got one chord so far !!! ;-) ) So, very shortly 100557.3713@compuserve.com will be known as moral@compuserve.com. The Numan Channel idea (real time chatting for Numan fans) from Brian McGibbon is a brilliant idea. Brian, I'm going to sign up. Let's all give this some support. The Numan Fan Directory idea from John Marques Carramao is also really neat. I'll have to sort out my entry to this one also. How about the rest of you ? It would be fun to put a face to some of the names in the Digest. The Fan Directory idea does tend to give me a different perspective regards following Numan. I've only just begun to wonder why it is that so many non-UK fans (particularly US based) get so excited about sound quality, choice of songs, left channel/right channel differences, etc. when talking about, particularly, the live albums. I suppose it's always been obvious, but I guess most of the non-UK fans don't ever get to see Numan perform live, which is a real shame. Here am I, happily sitting in the UK writing this and taking for granted the fact that in a month or so I'll be out on the road following the tour. A live album will be the only real link most non-UKers will have back to a live Numan show. I would certainly support any move to help get Numan back on the road abroad. I know I wouldn't mind seeing him live outside the UK again. The show in Brussels on The Emotion Tour was excellent. I remember seeing in his face when he came out on stage how pleased he was that so many UK fans had made the trip to Belgium to see him. Whilst on about that, I heard that the Brussels gig went down so well, that he was asked to headline a music festival in Belgium that Summer. Apparently, he turned it down. Can anyone confirm or deny this ? I think it would have been a great thing for Numan to have done careerwise ! That's it for now.
