In the Digest was a targeted listing of Numan vinyl. On the newsgroups they directed people to their WWW site. I want to say that Dumpo are genuine, having received a CD I ordered from them in extremely quick time. via Priority Mail. Dumpo are John Sawicki and Jason Marx. Jason has been a Digest subscriber for more than a year and has posted before under his own email account. Jason is selling his Numan vinyl to afford the Babylon CDs. I would also like to add that I think their approach has been quite restrained. They have not spammed every mailing list with generic postings and have not directed people to a WWW site where the extensive list of 80s synthpop items are listed. So, if you need any of those Numan vinyl items, email Jason at Dumpo712cd@aol.com and reserve your items promptly. I have no connection with Dumpo Music, other than being a satisfied customer. I must say I really like it. Gone is all that leather (IMO a good thing). He's in a suit and tie i.e. reminiscent of The Pleasure Principle look, but with the jacket being longer than normal. In the photo he is holding a flor mounted candlestick like he would hold a microphone. With the smoke it is very effective. A visual blending of TPP meets Sacrifice. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I work at a Financial News Bureau in the U.S called Bloomberg. (We also have an office in London) Anyway, one of our news wires is a London based worldwide newswire called 'Wenn'...our dear old Gary made two seperate pieces of news... to paraphrase, it said that "British pop star Gary Numan revealed to press that he almost shot his mother in a freak midnight bout of paranoia".... it goes on to say he was living in L.A and his mom came to visit and during the night while she was sleepwalking, Gary had to pull out his Berretta mistaking her for a burglar... The other piece was the already highly publicized bit about his flight around the world and how he and a friend were mistaken for spies by Indian officials b/c they flew over a russian submarine base and were each wearing two watches to account for London, and abroad time...which the officials thought was suspicious. The article said that Gary 'counts his lucky stars he isn't celebrating his comeback from inside prison'.... while these aren't exactly music related..it is a positive sign that Gary is getting press over here in America and his return to the top is inevitable.... Gary was questioned about his early days, the pressure he was under and so on. It seems that the Numan "machine" is starting to stir up again here in the UK. It could get quite exciting in the very near future, there's a *very real* buzz in the air....... Clive Btw, still looking for that Dramatis album and Gary's "Touring Principle" video. Any luck with the Blue albums Jeff? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Mar 1996 11:22:41 -0600 (CST) From: MACHMAN@cqm.co.uk (J HENDRY) Subject: Phil Lindsay To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I would like to reply to Phil who wrote in last Thursdays digest about how unresposive audiences seem to be at some Numan gigs. I agree. I recently spoke to someone on the new IRC channel and asked about this very thing. He told me that the London audience always give Gary a good response but in the Dream Corrosion video they seem a bit subdued.Maybe it just seems like this on video. The first time I saw Gary live was on the Warriors tour in 83 at the Glasgow Apollo and the audience were hysterical. I still have a bootleg tape of the gig and it sounds electric!! I have seen Gary many other times in Scotland and he always gets a rapturous response. I cant believe you guys in England are more reserved than us shy Scots! I agree with Phil it must be better for Gary if he appears on stage to an active audience rather than a group of people clapping poitely. BTW wasn't Gary brilliant on the Chris Evans Breakfast show the other day? Cheers Joe Hendry machman@cqm.co.uk PS Buy Cars. They also repeated the old 'he crashed his plane' myth, and, anyway, the whole Romo revival thing was made up by Melody Maker, and some sheep who read it and go to the right clubs. So there! Incidentally, I have three old issues of Record Collector which have features on Numan, with discographies and prices- one from 1985 (he comments on his songs so far, noting that 'Your Fascination' was too recent for him to formulate an opinion), and two from about 1991, which comprise a two-part discography going right up to Metal Rhythm (New Anger). It seems that the blue vinyl 'Tubeway Army' came with a free badge, which means that my copy is now suddenly worthless (I haven't got the badge, alas). Boo. 'I Wanna Be a Hippy' does indeed sound exactly like 'Are 'Friends' Electric?', only faster (the song goes 'I wanna be a hippy x3, I wanna get stoned', except, on the telly, they censor out the 'stoned' bit so that we never find out what they wanna get. Try shouting out 'CARTER!' instead). Living Ornaments? I paid 14 pounds for my copy (although, as it doesn't have the merchandising sheets it's virtually worthless again- record collectors are a notoriously perfectionist breed), and it was worth every penny, even though it's scratched slightly (bit that's on 'This Wreckage', which I never play anyway). Isolated noise-shot ahead- if Gary was a fan of the Illuminatus novels (and the KLF), would his fans be called 'The Justified Ancients of Nu Nu'? I have been puzzling out the reasons why his output has been lacking the power that is so evident in recordings by artists such as The Human League,T.A.F.K.A.P.,Duran Duran and Depeche Mode.Is it becuse Gary records his albums in a home studio as opposed to a purpose built studio? What kind of recording equipment does he use?Is it due to the types of synths/keyboards and other instruments that are played?Or is something VERY simple and VERY VERY important going wrong after the master tape/disk is delivered to the pressing plant which effects the finished product(in all formats)?Recently I feel that the latter reason could be the cause of the problem and this is demonstrated by the (happily) slightly better quality of the Human album. As you know some of the pieces of music later appeared (albeit after further development) as songs on the Outland and Machine+Soul albums.A good example is 'A Little Lost Soul' which became 'Soul Protection'. Before anyone suggests that my CD player/HI-FI is'nt working properly I can assure you that it's working perfectly.I also have a state of the art Surround Sound Field Processor so I know what high quality sound is when I hear it. The trouble is that even when I listen to Sacrifice (for example) with my headphones on the music sounds distant. It's as though I'm outside a glass house listening in and SOMETHING is preventing me from hearing it in the crystal clear manner that I'm used to when I play 'Thank You' by Duran Duran or 'Come' by Prince. If I play 'Desire' by Gary and then 'Space' by Prince it seems as though I've increased the volume between the two tracks. But this is not so.The Prince recording is considerably sharper, clearer, smoother and has a lustrous more professional sound. All I want to know is why don't Gary's recordings sound as good as his peers in the music business. One of the digest members made a reference to the "flat PA response" regarding the Dream Corrosion album recently.Well I was at that show and the show recorded for the Dark Light album as well and the PA was incredibly fantastic for both shows!!!The unfortunate truth is that the ASTONISHING POWER that I (and everybody else) experienced on the nights in question is diminished on the subsequent live albums. The screams and whistles of the fans are practically non-existent compared to what was actually there and on previous live albums as well. To conclude it strikes me as being a complete SHAME that the undoubted efforts of Gary to create his unique sound are significantly diminished by some technicality(s) along the way and the TRUE and ABSOLUTE POWER of my favourite artist's work is not experienced by those who matter the most, the fans. This message is NOT an attack on Gary.In fact I just want to point to a significant fact that prevents me from enjoying Gary's music as much as I want to. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Just a quick question about "Babylon-7"... WHERE IS IT?! The last I heard, it was due to be shipped before the end of February (THIS year!) as it was finished. I actually paid for it at the end of last summer. I know Gazza & co are busy, but I would at least like an update. I tried looking at the NU-World WWW a few times, but I was told the URL could no longer be found. Hopefully just a temporary glitch... On a better note, I heard Gary interviewed over the phone on Radio 1 this week (by Chris Evans on the Breakfast Show). Will Gary be adopting the catch-phrase "Freeze, you mother!"? (Of course, you had to have heard the conversation to appreciate this). On Saturday, Gazza was also on the White Room on C4 as mentioned by Matthew Holbrook on Nu-Zone. C4 only played Cars and A.F.E, and didn't bother with the 3rd, newer track he (presumably) recorded. Pity, but better than nothing. Oh yes, he was also on Noel's House Party (?!) earlier that evening! Unreal, but good for the exposure. There, that's all from me for now... *********** * Paul B. * (Still no witty sig.!) *********** ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
