Gary also told of his frustration of not being able to get his new stuff heard, and revealewd that he had played a new song "Prophecy" on The White Room, which wasn't broadcast Anyway, he appeared on Top of the pops, singing live, along to a slightly different mix of Cars, and he really seemed to enjoy it, and finished the last verse smiling and laughing ! The new URL is; (blatent plug...) http://www.angel.co.uk/complex Hope anyone who visits enjoys their stay :-) OK...Plug over, Firstly, let me say how impressed I am with the quality and quantity of Numan-coverage on the Net. Everyone in the Numan-Network has been very friendly since I first came on-line, and there has been very little 'cliquey-ness'. The digest is compulsive reading! I've been a bit dissmayed to read the discussions about the sound quality; I'm sure Gary is aware of the level of professionalism expected and strives to achieve just that. Personally, I prefer for him to run his own studio and label and produce music which he feels proud of, rather than pander to conglomerate music business bullshit and have to knock out commercial pop-fodder. Compare 'Radio Heart' to 'Sacrifice' and the question of how much 'bottom end' such a sound has just doesn't enter the equation. I would also like to comment on the subject of 'cover versions'. I also think that "Cars" and "A.F.E" have been done to death. I find it amusing to hear stories such as the "Foo Fighters new song; 'Down In The Park'". I think that in the long run, it is quite healthy to have a more varied range of songs covered than just the usual two. Everyone knows "Cars", and so if fans of some hip 90's alternative band heard it, they would treat it as a novelty cover. (Was the Hole version tongue in cheek or does C.Love really like Gary ? - see my point?) However, if an obscure track is covered it might encourage non-Numan fans to experiment with some more Numan songs. We may see 'Industrial' fans buying 'The Pleasure Principle' - it could happen! And that would be for the right reasons - they genuinely liked the song. Hope that provides food for thought... Best wishes, Paul.Denman@Ukonline.Co.Uk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Mar 1996 17:17:45 -0500 From: TJack10126@aol.com Subject: Introductions To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello there fellow Numanoids my name is Tony Jackson and here is my introduction to the Gary Numan digest. I was born, and lived up until recently, in Chingford, London. At the moment I live in a town called Bishop's Stortford which is about 30 miles outside of London in Hertfordshire and about half way to Cambridge. I will be 34 in August this year and for my sins I have worked in a Bank in Central London for the past 15 years. It was back in 1978/79 when I first heard Gary Numan's music. I was in the 6th form at school doing my mock A - levels and at the time the punk scene was beginning to grow a bit weary, to me at least! I was listening to a brilliant new band called Ultravox and they had just released what is still one of my all time favourite LP's, "Systems of Romance". It was this record more than anything with it's fusion of electonic keyboards and traditional guitars that really opened my ears to the new "electronic" sound although I did have a few Kraftwerk albums in my collection at the time. I will now get up onto my soapbox and go on record to say that apart from Gary the only other artist who has had the same appeal to me over the years is John Foxx. A very much underated genius as well you know! Anyway, back to the task in hand it was in the spring of 1979 I think that someone lent me a single by a new band called Tubeway Army entitled "Down in the Park". I can remember putting this on the battered old record player we had in the house and I was simply blown away! It's difficult to put into words what effect it had on me but it just seemed so DIFFERENT to anything that was about at the time. I was hooked from that moment! I still have that record somewhere, one of the few 45's that have survived down the years with me! Over the years I have remained very faithfull to the Numan cause and I have always looked out for, and bought, any album release when they appeared. Now I am NOT that fanatical to just sit back and accept everything Gary puts out and simply rave about it as if it is the best thing ever recorded. It may upset a few I know but through the middle 80's I have felt that some of the albums have been a bit patchy and I think that every one from "Dance" onwards tended to have one or two real stinkers on them. Then of course there was "I, Assassin" and the least said about that the better..... But still I play them because there is just something about the man and his music!!! The problem was that I always felt that the moody, dark and menacing Gary Numan with the heavy electronic sound was the best Gary Numan which is why I am now SO happy with what he is doing at the moment. Saying that, although I am not a huge fan of the fretless bass approach he adopted, I still put "Dance" in my personal top 3 of Numan releases. The best? Easy one that. It has to be "Sacrifice" the latest one. Then again having heard three tracks from the new "Exile" LP on the 'phone line it looks like this one will soon replace it! At the moment I currently have "Sacrifice" playing non stop on my Walkman as I travel to work each day and have done so for the past 6 months. A brilliant record! I have also seen Gary perform live 3 times now and will be at the Cambridge show in 11 days time to make it number 4. Am I looking forward to it? Stupid question really! As for my other musical tastes I can honestly say I can listen to ANYTHING except heavy house or reggae. My CD collection ranges from Genesis to John Foxx/Ultravox. From Abba through to Rush and also sprinkled in there is a large dose of classical stuff as well. I was taught the piano from an early age as my mother was a good pianist and I was always encouraged to listen to all types of music. As I type this R.E.M is playing on the CD for instance. It pays to broaden your mind and musical tastes kiddies! Oh and before you ask I gave the playing up a long time ago and yes I do regret it now. One day when I have the time I will go back to it although I have forgotten most things now. Shame really. I hope I have not gone on too long but if other "Numanoids" wish to contact me then please feel free to do so. I only log on to the network about once a week as a general rule so don't expect an instant reponse but there you go! ------------------------------ Date: 14 Mar 96 19:55:03 GMT From: Ashley Pomeroy Subject: NME interview To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Of all the unlikely things that could possibly happen in the world, the latest NME has a one-page interview with Gary Numan, complete with a big picture of the man himself. That in itself is odd, but, stranger still, the interview is quite positive and seems to be apologising a little for the bad press he got throughout the Eighties. In fact, it's very interesting, and if it wasn't so big I'd transcribe it out. It was all done before they recorded 'The White Room', in the dressing room. Headline- 'Hanging with the ohm boy'. Paul Moody wrote the interview (except, presumably, the bits where Gary talks), send him flowers. Highlights- apparently NME in 1988 called him 'the most hated man in pop', his image was apparently 'Ultra-gonzo', 'Down in the Park' (Gary's cover of the Foo Fighter's original) reached number 198 after selling 10,000 copies (nowadays sales like that would get you into the top twenty at least), after summing his early career up the journalist actually writes 'In short, Gaz was brill', after his success his mum recieved kidnap threats and his dad had a petrol bomb put under his car, Gary says that he has recorded 310 songs, he liked Plastic Fantastic's 'Fantastique No 5', Gary laments that the programme bosses made him record 'Cars' and 'Are 'Friends' Electric?', and he didn't like the robot dancing girls behind him on the set. Final line- 'He's teetotal. It's the only way to live'. Gary was also on Top of The Pops this week, the only live act, and, according to a friend of mine who saw it, he was brilliant. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- These are the days Impossible oat Would it get some my friends these a You say? wind for the sailboat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- http://area51.upsu.plym.ac.uk/~arp/ Einstein on the Beach ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Mar 1996 23:05:10 -0800 From: gymnif@isomedia.com (James Masterson) Subject: Numan CD Auction, Pt 2 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu This is GYMnIF@aol.com, but with a cheaper provider. Yeah, he's one of my favorites, also. Some other songs you may have heard him on include: "Everytime You Go Away", "Come Back and Stay" (and several others songs) - Paul Young "Give Blood" - Pete Townsend "Lady in Red" - Chris DeBurgh "Sunset Grill","New York Minute" - Don Henley (didn't someone just mention this?) (the Bass Player article has a list of 15 essential Pino tracks; WHITE BOYS & HEROES is listed FIRST!) Other credits include Joan Armatrading, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, Tears for Fears, and Elton John. Pino's bass: fretless Music Man StingRay 4 string "I think it's about a '79" Pino apparently got the I,Assassin gig by hearing about it from his friend Chris Slade (The Firm, AC/DC) who played drums on the album. Seems like I read somewhere else that Pino was considered for The Firm, but was unavailable, so they got Tony Franklin (another good fretless player). I, Assassin is described by Pino as the album where he discovered that the fretless was his 'voice'. He studied under Joe Hubbard for a while, who played bass on Warriors (Joe is also interviewed in the same magazine. 2 Numan references in the same mag...). I thought this was pretty cool, kind of like a student/teacher or Steve Vai/Joe Satriani type of thing to think about... Pino played at Live Aid with Paul Young (VH1 recently reran highlights - look for the 6'4" guy in the back playing the bass...). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Mar 1996 06:47:07 -0800 From: m.r.p.@ix.netcom.com (Mike Przytarski ) Subject: SAC Extended and a few other things. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I just got the Sacrifice (extended) the other day. A few things I have noticed about it as it is my first new studio Numan album since Outland. 1: Gary really has hit a grove/mentality since the mid 80's that has stuck. I remember when he went from his 'machine' style to 'Duke' and then where he is now, and you can sense the changes in the last albums in each of these phases. I hope he continues to change. Nothing kills faster than relaxing in a set pattern. 2: Even though Gary has continued with his 'dark' trend in the music itself, I am glad to see his lyrics are more up-beat. I was starting to worry about him. 3: I noticed that Gary has continued his 'America' bashing. Come on Gary! We are not that bad! Just because we put ketchup on our chips.... (side note, I noticed that someone asked gary what he ment about the 'American Lie' (see footnotes) and he remarked that 'I'm sorry but I can't remember. I can't even remember what song I used the line on.' Boy, that makes me feel better. Get slammed and....... 4: I also noticed that the first few songs are probably the best I have heard from him yet. Deadliner and A Question of Faith both top of the list. I also notice that some of the later songs use rifs and bars from his earlier stuff as sell as the same inflection in some lyrics (the word 'boy' in Bleed, and 'boys' in New Anger for example). 5: I also agree that Gary needs to get back to a live drummer. The programed stuff gets to be predictible after a while. That may be why the Live stuff sounds a little better material wise, the 'human' factor in playing the songs. 6: I have also noticed a lack of 'depth' in the actual music itself as far as tone range, and even know why it exists. The fact of the matter is many of todays groups are doing the same thing, and i think we can expect to hear more of it. But then again I cant hear over 20k so maybe Gary needs his studio RTA'ed and TEF'ed. I do like the album though, and have now become as excited as many of you 'brits' as to a possible 'comeback'. Though I feel he has never left. A few other points from the last zine': >One of my bosses walked into work yesterday whistling Cars....and >everyone hums along with AFE....heh....the conversion has begun . I was playing SAC and my boss remarked 'I thought he was dead'. Thats when I pulled out my 10+ CD's I had with me and let him 'borrow them'. My boss plays a keyboard/synth in his band, and really liked some of the stuff. But not the vocals. Oh well, one step at a time! >Just by seeing a popular style that he didnt like(punk) and improving >on it. I dont see Numan as the Next Nine inch nails or skinny puppy. >He doesnt have to be... I agree, in fact some of Gary's early/late 80's stuff has that 'industrial' sound in it. I kinda felt they improved on Gary's Style. >Could someone pleeeease tell me something more about the film "Urgh, >a music war", which featured Cars as far as I know. I know nothing, >and can find nothing about it on the net, and the soundtrack is >supposed to feature a number of other artists I like e.g. Wall of >Voodoo. Has anyone actually seen the film?! I rented it when it came out in the early 80's. It was a lot of live shots on video tape of bar gigs and small venue gigs for some of the 'up and coming' bands of the punk/new age group. A lot of crap with a few 'known' groups included. It was so bad I never bothered to copy it. The longest 90 min I think I ever watched. Well thats al this time. M. Przytarski -- I'm told it's called 'The un-reality dream' I'm told its called 'The great american lie' I'm told that this is like the vengeance of God I can't believe that God would do this to me. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Mar 1996 08:38:20 -0500 From: "Jeff Colaw, 224E, 7473" Subject: Soundtracks To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings, As each Digest mentions something about which of Gary's songs has made it into the movies, I remember 'Down In The Park' being used in an animated, full-length film back in the late 70's/early 80's in the US. The film, which was played in movie theaters at the time and later turned up on cable TV, had a futuristic, urban setting and was realistically animated (not cartoonish). I also think the characters were in a punk band. I can't remember the name though.... Anyone have a clue? Cheers, Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Mar 96 14:01:18 GMT From: P Lindsay Subject: top'o'the pops To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Everyone, I hope none of you witnessed Gary on Top of the Pops last night. It was great to see him on _the_ mainstream music program for the first time in about 10 years, but I was cringing with embarassment at what the BBC had done with the vocal. (normally these days the artists do a live vocal over a backing track, which BTW, was the extended mix for some reason) Most of the time the vocals are mixed at the same level as they are on the recorded version of the songs. For Gary, however, they seemed to have set the vocal _very_ high in the mix, with no effects, reverb, frequency shifters, or any of the stuff Gary is used to singing through on tour. Usually , the vocal is taken through a frequency shifter which multiplies ther vocal frequencies by 1.02 and 0.98 - this thickens andincreases the tone of the vocal. Then a reverb is used to take away ssome of the dryness of the human voice. Gary had none of this and sounded not very good because of it. This seemed a bit odd, since it was recorded on the day before. Presumably Gary must have seen it before it was broadcast ? If I was a less reasonable person I would think it was part of the radio conspiracy ! :-| On the other hand, there was an article on Gary in the lastest issue of NME which is almost complimentary about his music, and very complimentary about his flying. Good photo too. No mention of the tour though. Here's to a better chart position next week ! Phil. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
