Gary performed an Hour & 15mins set of most of the classics, track = listing consisted of the following, not nessesarily in this order and = maybe with some omissions. Prophecy, Noise Noise, Cars, AFE, Films, = Bleed, Question of Faith, Seed of a Lie, I'm an Agent, Me I disconnect, = Dark, Alien Cure, Friends plus more (help me out Rob!) I met Rob (Author of AFE Web page) in the Tottenham pub before the gig, = it was our first meeting (oh the power of the net) and spent the next = hour or so with our respective other halves discussing which of us was = the most obsessed sad fan. I think there was a hung parliament. We got to the venue to see Glasshouse perform a better than average set. = The venue was packed to the rafters, must have been a sellout! We got = ourselves in position about 4 people from the front, stage right. This = was Kirsty's (my girlfriend) first ever gig of any kind, so my first = concern was the volume of the sound. She has been off work today = nursing a headache so my concern was a good one. The lights went down and the curtain fell, Gary was already on stage, = standing at the back on a podium. The stageset was not one of the huge = lightshows that Gary was known for in the 80's but a set with a great = deal of thought put into it. The feeling it gave to me was as the = inside of a church, with the back wall looking like stone and the new = Numan logo appearing as an icon in the middle, Stage middle at stage = level was also the word "NUMAN" in a similar font to the NuWorld one. = Hence my openning line, Gary looked like a crazed mid-west Preacher = (don't take that the wrong way Gary!!). The haunting bars of Prophecy = started and the concert began, the only downer was the the remote mic = that Gary used was playing up and it was very difficult to hear the = vocals for the first few minutes, Gary then reverted to a standard mic, = so much for technology! The setlist could have been more exciting, but I understood the reason = why Gary played the ones he did, this tour is more for the new people = than for the likes of us, so he is hardly likely to play a new version = of 'Dream of Siam' which would make these people think, bloody hell, = give me 'CARS'!!! Sad but true. The one thing that I noticed about the setlist was the power, the band = was extremely accomplished and the music seemed to have more power than = previous years. Well that is all for now, it's 7.05pm and I am due in Bristol tonight to = see Gary at the Colston Hall! I will update you with that one. neil.mitchell@ukonline.co.uk ------ =_NextPart_000_01BB1A7E.4D9C21E0 Content-Type: application/ms-tnef Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 eJ8+IhkTAQaQCAAEAAAAAAABAAEAAQeQBgAIAAAA5AQAAAAAAADoAAENgAQAAgAAAAIAAgABBJAG AAQBAAABAAAADAAAAAMAADADAAAACwAPDgAAAAACAf8PAQAAADkAAAAAAAAAgSsfpL6jEBmdbgDd AQ9UAgAAAABHYXJ5IE51bWFuAFNNVFAAbnVtYW5AY3MudXdwLmVkdQAAAAAeAAIwAQAAAAUAAABT TVRQAAAAAB4AAzABAAAAEQAAAG51bWFuQGNzLnV3cC5lZHUAAAAAAwAVDAEAAAADAP4PBgAAAB4A ATABAAAADQAAACdHYXJ5IE51bWFuJwAAAAACAQswAQAAABYAAABTTVRQOk5VTUFOQENTLlVXUC5F RFUAAAADAAA5AAAAAAsAQDoBAAAAAgH2DwEAAAAEAAAAAAAAAw4oAQiABwAYAAAASVBNLk1pY3Jv c29mdCBNYWlsLk5vdGUAMQgBBIABABMAAABBc3RvcmlhIEdpZyBSZXZpZXcAnAYBBYADAA4AAADM BwMAGQATAAQAHwABACYBASCAAwAOAAAAzAcDABkAEwAEAAEAAQAIAQEJgAEAIQAAADRGRERBRjMx NkQ4NkNGMTFCNUFBNDQ0NTUzNTQwMDAwABsHAQOQBgAICQAAEgAAAAsAIwAAAAAAAwAmAAAAAAAL ACkAAAAAAAMANgAAAAAAQAA5AAB47eV9GrsBHgBwAAEAAAATAAAAQXN0b3JpYSBHaWcgUmV2aWV3 AAACAXEAAQAAABYAAAABuxp95e0xr91Yhm0Rz7WqREVTVAAAAAAeAB4MAQAAAAUAAABTTVRQAAAA AB4AHwwBAAAAHQAAAG5laWwubWl0Y2hlbGxAdWtvbmxpbmUuY28udWsAAAAAAwAGEOqrOkIDAAcQ 5AcAAB4ACBABAAAAZQAAAENPTUVXT1JTSElQQVRUSEVDSFVSQ0hPRk5VTUFOR0FSWVBFUkZPUk1F REFOSE9VUiYxNU1JTlNTRVRPRk1PU1RPRlRIRUNMQVNTSUNTLFRSQUNLTElTVElOR0NPTlNJU1RF RE8AAAAAAgEJEAEAAACLBwAAhwcAAEoLAABMWkZ1MU9PIP8ACgEPAhUCqAXrAoMAUALyCQIAY2gK wHNldDI3BgAGwwKDMgPFAgBwckJxEeJzdGVtAoMz9wLkBxMCgH0KgAjPCdkCgCcKgQ2xC2BuZwHQ NTc3CvsUUQvxIAhQB4AgV0kFsHNoBSAgYQVAdDJoGZBDaAhwEXAgb2pmB7B1A4EuCoUKhUexCsB5 IHAEkAIQcgeAFmQaIAOgSAhhICYg+DE1bQuABCARsRsCBGA3E8AbAhpiYwtgBBBpYxRzLBpQcgDQ ayBs9QQAdAuAZx+gAiAAkBPB9x1QH0UCEGwVoAPwF8AgMLRubwVAbgeQEbBzCsD/AxAcsAuAGlEE ABsACyAEkOcdYR1QAMB5YhmQA/AaYC8ecBlyA3AEAWkhQS4glCBQA2BwGnBjeSAwvE5vBAAZkCdz IDBDEZFRIDBBRkUgMEYDEG2pICFCbAngZCAwUQpQ9yDRAiAbAkYLcBpgIDAGYDEhpGEgTAiQIDBJ J1JtHWJBZwnwdCAwTXEZkEkgZAQAITEjMGP1LKFECsBrKIEgsAnwGVB7CHAoEUYIgSTgBCALUHWn BCAEYBYQICgacGwaEI0l4nUFQAgAYiEpG6yvLQAHgDDTMBBBMMBoBbF3GxEooRmgZTKgCrAscCnb I+QZkFQjABPQbhGALBB8cHUyoCVAHQEZkBpiZ35pIsElgCVgH9AwoQXAZj5pEaAFQAeAEcAg8ihv exrwGmJwIoAkoR9FIzB0uzQwJNJzHNACMDk1eAVA/zMAHcEFsSXAJWQdshYQOhF5LaBpdiXxGmEF wBGAbL88wAQgLSIvoACQIQF3GfDfGuQvoTbSGmIe9GIjYRGw9TnxYR1QZhtxJrAtACQh/m4gkD0C JVE24SuAGrAhAf8KsSCwNTAsgRudM7A2QCMB7nQ7kBpiPMBuClBEshGw/RmQRx/COwEnoRzVK3El QO804QXAGmADkWE8wCBgLHD7HnImoVRFBzbSCrAggB1B30TFIGABgASQICFtL6A64X9IETWRLnEr gBGwImEwwCH/JrBEVQhhTFE9giPxOLAAkPcqEwGgMLI0HMEm8ClwIjB/A2Eh9ANgLJITwEhSBRBn LmhItCRBNtJLN2J5J/kEIChtHLA2UELgA1AvIrs0MDdUZUghNkIrQ24csH5rC4ApoTuBUsE3VCEx Y/sEkj82dgbwG1Al8R9UJcD1QoBkJqFTGnERgAQgS+P7GxAbIHcFsEGRBHAlICLg901xIPJCUWVA oADQV+NVkv9WOiuARIAEcBsAIzAbnUjy7yCwUTE/EToyZCKAR/Ek4e8fcwhwAZAj8WZMYSAwHIP9 QhNsFhBAoBywKjFQs1CT9yTgWpMaRGIgck6SOKEtIP8bUEjFULMegjbSIvJdER827xqwSGFedDMA dz9SGjFg555rIvBfUR0BNEY4MFKB/mIwwUwyNrElglyhYZFfEf9bAAMgH0MIYFExNVEFQAuAf0TB JYBIxWCAMEAg8jahZ79LokTBGYFCEz9UHkFpDbD/K0QRcBrCIDAlc2NXNtAiYP8goFzQVREhECCw SgBQoWYSf1+GIzAH4BtDcgFEgBogcP8c0CORWqJCMQOgIAAqMTRV+R4wZGQpcCrhUMN2dBoi/1C0 KXA8wAMgYTQ7gRpiWaEBHVAiTlVNQU4i/yPiTDEHcAMQCsECEkS2G0DtGbFsXPQmsEgJ8FZgVZL/ JvAJ8AMAcmMjMGDFchIdQbdyk3BBIGB6HUF2cS040F8fESbQWwBbQQXAKF8wbvonGkFhcrFnw3lD UFE+UftaIRyCITEgSMURgEKAIOP/Y5ARoBsCJtZQogAgHUNfpe9WQwVAJUBuQG4gMRpxAiD/I8Ff MiShPzZKcxPgIwB2Ur5jZ7lGcR1QSZMLYHkg8v51GhEk4TalSCGH0QaQN1C9PfBsRKNa8UeiVxJj ePH/aPMiAzdjYIAH4B4xMMAHkP9gxRphA6AWEEghIZJEwUwx72KiCxGJglVUdRrhjoMFkP5oIvB0 YYMgXV8eciCyISHfjRAdUEuYL9M6wGNOYSKy/2oCLQBYMUrxRMBc4YjkH9D/KjE+cILUivNKEodz B5Eacf8tICmhJCNEwB3BJEEv046G/3PCT0VHw46GcpKEky+gVVP/b3KawQsRI8FykiPBRMGLAp8r cXPCSCEmUhsCJ0RhkessEBsRU0MBJz5lWaCVwv8AwIGTZUGdOEFxl3FyEWHBHzAxYLE2UDzBGYEn Q0H4UlMngzBMwQYQHVBqAv8gUApQXU+ac0FDIRBnwy0A/yLxIAAdQk7TV9OVNT82OLP/h0RjkCTh NtI6wYkhoIIA0P0FoG0LUAQAGnCF2EtBiaH/RcEdMo1SS6Iv0zi0R8MTUP9UECZgL6GaEBGRQ29x 4WfDPyRBcdJpAmixNoJSgTcuvRfwcCwSHVAtADUxZEVh/SPxQgUQcuG0QQIgUSJFh/8ckho2BvBy 4h2QcdFMwS0A3wPwceGLgFoQiWF5CGBw1q8aMV0fIyEDEC4eMHRbQbEiYEB1a4ehffEuBaC+Lr5Q Co8YyL81FTEAwZAAAwAQEAAAAAADABEQAAAAAEAABzDAKOTTfRq7AUAACDDAKOTTfRq7AR4APQAB AAAAAQAAAAAAAACT8w== ------ =_NextPart_000_01BB1A7E.4D9C21E0-- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Mar 1996 01:28:45 +0000 From: "Paul 'Marvin' Baxter" Subject: Babylon 7 Arrives ... To: Gary Numan >From Digest #212: >Has anyone in the UK received Babylon 7? No one has posted they have and >I have not received my copy yet. Has distribution been postponed till >after the tour? I received the Babylon 7 CD on Wednesday the 20th of March. The track "Metal Beat" is the only track of any real interest, in that it is previously unreleased - and it's pretty good, too. Disappointingly, all the other tracks are easily available on CD elsewhere, so it is a bit of a wasted opportunity really. I was at least hoping that the 12" vinyl remix of "Machine & Soul" would have been used, but alas, no. Considering all the other stuff that is awaiting a CD release, I hope that the third Receiver CD picks up where the Babylon 7 has fallen short. Or there is potential for a Babylon 8 & 9, of course. Sorry to whinge! However, if you don't already have most of these tracks, I think it is still a very good buy and worth the money. *********** * Paul B. * (Still no witty sig.!) *********** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Mar 1996 00:36:00 -0000 From: Neil Mitchell Subject: Gary at Bristol Colston Hall. To: "'Gary Numan'" ------ =_NextPart_000_01BB1AAC.B41FCA60 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Well it's 12.30am and I have just got back from the Colston Hall. How = things change, I use to hate seeing Gary in Bristol there never seemed = to be a good atmosphere. Tonight was f***in excellent! The crowd were = up for it and so was Gary and the Band. He changed the order of tracks from the Astoria gig but played exactly = the same songs. I was pretty much central and 12 rows from the front, a = real good view. I have really got to like this stageset, very gothic = and suits what Gary is doing lyrically at the moment. I must admit to = wondering whether there would be a giant can of Carling Premier Lager on = stage, or whether Gary would say, "This next track is Cars, sponsored by = Carling Premier, the new Smoother Lager". Hell no, this is a NUMAN gig = no outside pressure here. This band seem so together this year, I think that this was the best = sound I possibly have ever heard (however, I have history of thinking = this after every gig). After playing 'Are you Real' tonight Gary said "I really fucked that one = up last night, strange really as I wrote it!", I didn't realise that he = made mistakes with it at the Astoria but I bow to his knowledge. There = were a lot of new people in tonight who really got into Cars and AFE = (yawn) but who also seemed to get into his newer stuff, but will they = buy it???? I HOPE SO!!! Imagewise, Gary is wearing what he wore on TOTP and the White Room (see = NUWorld for photo), unlike most other years he doesn't change a bit, = doesn't even unbutton his suit jacket for the encore! God that bloke is = cool! Kirsty (me bird) thinks Gary is sexy, but I think she prefers the = Guitarist. She didn't get a headache tonight and really enjoyed = herself. (Note: Rob of AFE Web page - She actually watched the gig = rather than snogging me tonight, which was nice). All in all this tour = is turning out to be one of the best that I can remember. I have listened to Gary Numan for about 7 years, and own all his older stuff, inclusing the awesome Asylum collection. It is difficult to get any of his newer stuff. I also like bands such as Ultravox, Cocteau Twins, Bauhaus, Blondie, Alien Sex Fiend, and related punk/synth bands from the early 1980s. I hope this provides you with some insight. I guess I was probably too out of it to remember the track listing, but he opened with qa new song, "Prophecy", and played quite a few new songs during the set... A moshpit started during "Are You Real ?" which was my cue to go down the front, and the set finished (of course) with "Cars". He played 2 encores, the 1st of which was ... oh damn - the one from Sacrifice with the guitar riff intro, and then "Remind Me To Smile". He went off again, and came back to finish with "I'm An Agent" It was a great night, and I think I'll have to go to the Gulidford show too next week.. Anyone else going, cos I'll be all on my own for that one.. ? I heard Gary has sacked Sheep On Drugs for this tour, which is a real bummer, cos I was so looking forward to it. I dont know who last night's support band were, but it wasnt EMF, who I was expecting, but a 3-piece, dull, Numan wannabe band... If they're supporting for the entire tour, I wouldnt bother turning up early !!!! Andy PS - Myself and my bass player were having a discussion last night which hopefully someone can answer...Does Gary wear a hairpiece ??? He's certainly got a lot more hair than he did 10 years ago! :) It was good to meet up with a few digest members last night, but I cant remember any of your names , so drop me an email, and I'll hopefully talk to you soon...And if anyone's going to Guildford, then get in touch ! See ya ! :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Mar 1996 07:51:26 EST From: "Colin Edwards" Subject: London Astoria To: numan@cs.uwp.edu A few comments on this show for Digest readers....... Excellent stage set, very gothic, featuring Gold on Black (like the NuWorld Web pages, lots of roboscans, a pedestal on each side for the drums and keyboards, and plenty of room at the front for the guitar and during the show the bass keyboards and guitars......... Good setlist featuring (hopefully in the right order)...Prophecy... Noise Noise....A Question of Faith....Me I Disconnect From You.... Replicas....Are Friends Electric....An Alien Cure....Everyday I Die.... Films....Bleed....Are You Real....Seed Of A Lie....Dark....Absolution.. Cars......ENCORE-Love And Napalm....Remind Me To Smile....2ND ENCORE... I'm An Agent Highlights - the new Exile songs are superb, Exile is going to be better than Sacrifice if these are anything to go by. Absolution live is a tremendous song, and with Are You Real played for the first time in years meant that the shorter set than usual was more than made up for. Despite what others say Magic was not played as far as I can remember. Atmosphere was electric, plenty of pogoing to the upbeat numbers, which was a bit too enthusiastic at times. Lighting was the best I can remember for so early in a tour, it is always excellent by the end of the tour, but this was exceptional. Really looking forward to Southampton, Guildford and Hammersmith now, don't forget we will be meeting up before each of these, we generally meet up 1 hour before each show outside the venue, and then adjourn to a nearby pub. Drop me an Email if you will be meeting up. Before the Astoria show, I met with Jon Garland and Matthew Tamea, and in the venue we met up with Joe Farr, and Andy McHaffie showed as well. For Imp......a lot of interest in the T-shirts mate, we had to answer a few questions about what they were about, and I for one will be wearing a Digest T-shirt at each show I attend. Doctors diagnosed an accute case of unoriginality and decided to operate on his cerebal cortex. Experts were shocked to find that a CAT scan revealed that Gary Newman (real name Harry Webb) had very little brain tissue left whatsoever. "This is a strange and rare case", commented hospital officials, "Mr.Webb had better come up with a original thought soon, otherwise the cells will never regenerate, and I don't think that either he, or his thousands and thousands of adoring fans will like that". Fan Club reaction was sympathetic. "We know he is well past it", commented staff at his Bognor based centre of operations, "But we still manage to flog some T-Shirts to people who just can't let go of a boring eighties has been". Mr Webbs condition was said to be extremely unstable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- NUMIARY! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello altogether, I have only two short things to metion: 1 - Lately I went shopping in the local SATURN here in Nueremberg/GER (SATURN sells TVs, HIFI,CD,Computer,...). And I saw a place, where Vinyil Records were sold for 2 DM (~95pence). I was just about to walk on by, as I saw the two red bars from the telekon album. When I came near to the records I saw, that there are tons of telekon records amoung other (most classic) ones. There were at least 40-50 telekons!!! I am soo surprised (note: most shops in GER have no vinyl records since many years) that I asked the stuff, why and where they got it. They told me that they got it from the netherlands in order to perform a promotion of new record players, and now after finishing they sold it out. (nice to hear that gary's telekon is good for advertising for new record players :-) ) 2 - I send a fax to POLYGRAM Germany in order to convince them distributing the Cars (Prem. Mix) and the forthcoming Premier Hits CD also in Germany. Up to know no response ... by, M a r k u s D i e t r i c h ------------------------------ Date: 26 Mar 96 09:59:53 EST From: Sean Francis <100557.3713@compuserve.com> Subject: The Premier Tour - Review of the First 3 shows To: Digest Numan Hi Everyone, Back home for a few hours in between shows, so I thought I'd send in a review of the first 3 concerts. They were : Saturday day March 23 Folkstone Leas Cliff Hall (packed out) Sunday March 24 London Astoria (packed out) Monday March 25 Bristol Colston Hall (packed out) Leas Cliff Hall is quite a small venue, I'd say 1000 - 1200 maximum and it was packed. I've seen Gary there twice before, but this time there were far more people than either of the previous two occasions. Lights went down around 9.15 and the band started with a brand new song from "Exile". I think it was "Dark", but it could have been "Prophesy". Not bad, but you can't hear a word Gary sings ! Next up was a very powerful version of "Noise Noise" - has that bass synth been beefed up or what ?!!? From here the tempo increased with Gary's voice sounding better than ever. "Me ! I Disconnect From You", "A Question of Faith" and "AFE" all followed until the first ballad of the evening, "A Seed of a Lie". Musically excellent, but I thought the studio version of the vocal was better - it must be difficult to get that 'pained, half whispered' effect live. Then the tempo returned to break neck speed. Some fans who loathe the "guitar fest" versions of some earlier songs are gonna hate "Films" and "Replicas". They were awsome. The power chords almost rip through you ! The first and only surprise of the evening was "Are You Real ?". Good version, very true to the album version except for Gary consistently not singing the "Is it me ? Is it you ?" part. The band have screwed this song up the last two night aswell ! The keyboard player really lost it last night (not Ade, the other one, errrrmm David). Playing the wrong notes is one thing, losing time and playing the wrong notes is quite another. Gary's comment in London was, "That was a fucking shambles". Last night it was, "We messed that one up last night aswell. I only wrote the thing I can't be expected to play it !". All good humoured. The hits continued until another new song, "Alien Cure". Minimalist I'd say, some very strange sounds on this song - a bit like playing a wooden block in a wind tunnel with a massive decay on the sound. This created an odd (rather chilling) atmosphere. Can't wait for "Exile". "Everyday I Die" got another outing, sounding just the same as on "Dark Light". Everything from "Sacrifice" has been dropped except the earlier "A Question of Faith" and the excellent "Bleed". Towards the end we got the third and last new song, "Prophsey (or "Dark" - we can't be sure !). This was the best of the three with an unusual vocal style - big percussion, big guitar, droning synth, classic Numan. Can't wait for "Exile" even more now ! Finally, Gary finished up with "Absolution" and "Cars". "Absolution" sounded great until the percussion started. Way way way too loud - it drowned everything else. Grrr. "Cars" was OK, this year minus the extended drum solo in the middle. Encore 1 saw "Love and Napalm" and "Remind Me To Smile" (sometimes swapped with "I'm An Agent"). Encore 2 saw "I'm An Agent" (sometimes swapped with "RMTS"). Overall impression was very good. The band played well. It's nice to see a quietly competent guitarist doing his job extremely well without being full of himself - nuff said. Gary's performances have been startling - full of energy, lots of cold staring (more than last time) and touches of fun to remind us he is human and enjoying himself. The attendances have been exceptional so far. Bristol was a little subdued, but Folkstone and London were loud and proud. Track listing : Dark Noise Noise Me ! I Disconnect From You A Question of Faith Are 'Friends' Electric ? Replicas The Seed Of A Lie Films Bleed Are You Real ? Alien Cure Everyday I Die Prohpesy Absolution Cars Encore 1 Love and Napalm Remind Me To Smile Encore 2 I'm An Agent Cheers, Sean. ------------------------------ Date: 26 Mar 96 14:53:07 EST From: Simon Bone <70324.1340@compuserve.com> Subject: The Ramones To: Numan Digest I said: > [Times Square] had a lot of late 70's/new wave artists like > the Ramones and Patti Smith in it. I believe you'll find they were once considered late 70's. ;-> >As each Digest mentions something about which of Gary's songs has made it into >the movies, I remember 'Down In The Park' being used in an animated, full-length >film back in the late 70's/early 80's in the US. Yes, this is the thing I was responding to, and it occurs to me that Gary's music might have been in the 1981 films "American Pop" and "Heavy Metal" which meet this description (although I am almost certain there was no Numan music in the latter).
