This list would be for the purpose of linking up people who want particular Numan or Numan-related CDs with those able to find them. It would formalize the implicit request for anyone finding collectable Numan CDs to offer them to the Digest into a maintained list that would be available anytime via WWW and posted periodically to the Digest. We hope it would aid those who missed out on certain releases that are no longer easily obtained. HOW IT WOULD WORK ----------------- Sean has heroically agreed to maintain the list should it actually get going. He would take submissions for the list by email. If you are looking for specific items, you would email Sean with the artist, title, catalogue number or country of pressing, how much you are prepared to pay and your email address e.g. Sharpe & Numan, Automatic, Polydor UK/Ger, $25, dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu Offers would be made in $US but the currency of the transaction would be up to the participants making the deal. With luck, after this info became public, someone would find a copy and offer it to you via email. I'd imagine that certain items will have more demand than others. Complaints have occurred with the first come first serve method for matching prospective buyers with sellers due to the fact that people get their Digests at different times of their day. It is almost pure luck if you manage to be the first to ask about an item for sale. This system would enable a seller to contact an individual about an item for the offered price. Higher offers are more likely to be answered. This system might not help those who can't afford much, I'm sorry, but we are not intending to make people a lot of money this way. Sellers could offer to sell items for less than the offered price, of course. Certain rules will need to be followed if this is to work well. 1. Only offer what you are prepared to pay. It is unfair to the seller if you try and haggle the price down because you offered more than you could pay. A seller does not have to offer it to the highest bidder on the list. 2. Sellers should not set up a private bidding war via email as that is something we want to avoid. 3. Please only submit one bid per item. If you want to raise or lower your offer, email the request to Sean and he will change the info. 4. If you find or buy the item you have made an offer for, please remember to ask Sean to remove your offer from the list. 5. Buyer pays shipping. 6. International transactions should be figured out by the particpants but I would suggest CD swaps as an equitable way to do this with the exchanged CDs being of the value of the offer. Currency exchanges between countries can incur significant conversion charges. 7. Remember that both new and used CDs cost more in the UK and Japan than in the USA, so make your offers accordingly. Sean or I would not influence any amounts specified. We hope this would be pretty much self-perpetuating. If you have been looking for an item for a long time, you might want to offer more than others or what you have previously offered. It is expected that UK subscribers will be supplying more discs than US or other subscribers simply because Gary's CDs are primarily UK-only releases. At least the US has a supply of used "New Anger" CDs. We hope this would also help out lots of people who have only recently started to collect Gary's CDs. If anyone has any comments about this idea, please post to the Digest. We want to see what the reaction is like before we go ahead. PLEASE DO NOT SEND BIDS TO SEAN YET! We will inform you if and when the system is launched. Thanks Derek and Sean -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Now, about that Publishers Clearing House winners notification......... :-) I want to make a few comments about Babylon 7 after intense scrutiny. Tracks: Machine and Soul (I am positive this is mix 4 from the CD5 part 2) A Question of Faith (12"/CD5/extended mix) The Hauntings (b-side on M&S CD5 part 1) Metal Beat (previously unreleased) Whisper of Truth (b-side to AQoF CD5) Play Like God (" " " " " ) Absolution (same as CD5) Total is over 41 minutes, making it by far the longest of the series, but it leaves a lot to be desired in several respects. First, while Babylon 5 had only one new to CD track, all but "Metal Beat" on "Babylon 7" are easily available elsewhere on currently available CD5s. The "New Anger" and "America" CD5s are quite rare now, making "Babylon 5" a good value to those who were not colecting CDs back in 1988. "Babylon 6" was mostly retread, again with only one new to CD track, but at least it sounded fine compared to the original releases. "Babylon 7" on the other hand really troubles me. "Metal Beat" I have decided, is a good track. I have been humming it and have had it in my head for several days. Shades of "Love and Napalm" but only 3.05 in total. It's not pure "Sacrifice" nor "Machine and Soul". It is listed as being a 1993 demo i.e. between the two albums. IMO it would have made a great b-side. Shame it wasn't put on "Absolution". But then "Babylon 7" would have been completely pointless. Some of the keyboards underneath the guitar remind me of Gary's early synth work. What is really disappointing about Babylon 7 is the inferior sound. If we need further proof that Gary needs help in his studio, this is it, IMO. Compared to the CD5 tracks these are so muffled. It's as if he has the treble turned way down. Cranking up the treble helps the tracks but the tracks are so compressed at the high end. Bass reponse is lower than the CD5s. "Absolution" really booms. Still, I am distressed by the dullness and also the stark contrast with the low low end/brightness of Babylon 1 and others in the series. Either, Gary doesn't take the care he needs to when compiling his work, or he's partially deaf! It makes me worry that "Exile" may be a sonic disaster. How can I broach this with him without pissing him off? Should we decide on an excellently produced and engineered CD and ask him to compare his work to that CD before sending his work to the pressing plant? Should we try and motivate him to get a second opinion into his studio? Can you imagine the effect on "Sacrifice" if someone could clean up the tapes and flush out its full glory? Suggestions are welcome. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu Dept. of Biology Tel. I just purchased another Change Your Mind 12" for like $2.50, and it was a Promo Copy, Mint Condition. Someday if I can ever get a web page started, I may add a seperate discography of Gary Numan bootlegs as it seems there are many people recording his shows and trading them. FYI: It was asked in a "Digest Asks Gary..." some time ago if he minded people trading bootleg shows. His response was that it was fine as long as it was NOT for mass production (commercial) use and was among the fans (NOT someone who could give a rat's ass about his music and is blatantly ripping him off with the sale of bootlegs). I can see his point and agree TOTALLY. I'd rather trade more than outright sell copies of what I have anyway, although I have been known to sell copies to a fan or two -:) Write me if you might be interested in either. I decided to go to Cambridge this time round as I could not go the Hammersmith gig due to prior commitments and besides it was an easier venue for me to get to! I arrived at around 7:20 due to NO traffic on the motorway (a first) and just in time for a swift pint at the bar before I settled in to listen to the support band. Well to be honest I thought they were crap but to be fair perhaps they were just not to my tastes as others have raved about them since. Can't even remember their name. Sorry. Anyway after they had finished there was a keen sense of anticipation in the hall as we awaited the great man himself. The venue itself , The Cambridge Corn Exchange, stands in the heart of the town and holds at a guess about 1,500 to 2,000 people. I am VERY lousy at judging numbers so I may be WAY off track here but never mind. It looked to me that it was about 2/3rds full. Not bad for a 4th show. It was about 9:15 when the black curtain screening the set was finally raised and the opening bars of "Prophecy" came belting out. This was to be one of three new songs that Gary would perform. The others were "An Alien Cure" and "Dark". The set was basically two large "boxes" that stood about 7 or 8 feet off the ground. On the one on the left sat Richard Beasley on drums. The right hand one was occupied by Ade Orange and David Brooks on. The "boxes" themselves displayed the new symbol that I suppose will be used on the "Exile" album. In the middle of these platforms was a set of steps which led up to a third tier where the man himself stood at the start. As he performed "Prophecy" he slowly came down to join Rob Harris (guitarist) on the stage. Others have gone over the play list and Gary did not deviate from that so I won't repeat it here but just to say that as far as I was concerned the choice was spot on. The new songs especially seemed very "dark" (excuse the pun) and moody, even more so than "Sacrifice" if that is possible! "Dark" especially is now one of my personal favourites. The thought that I will have to wait till September for the new album is not good!!!!! The set itself was smaller than past efforts but did not suffer for it. The lighting was as good as always. The new band members seemed well polished, especially the new guitarist, Rob Harris. Less intrusive than Kipper.(I certainly approve of THAT.........) Overall a VERY impressive sound and performance. Highlights on the night for me were Replicas, Bleed (brilliant, VERY atmospheric), Are You Real?, Films and Dark. Replicas surprised me as it is normally a track I skip through when it is on the CD. Came over extremely well here though... Any gripes? At first the sound quality did not seem at it's best, with Gary's vocals not very clear at all. It improved as the concert went on. Some songs did not seem to work for some reason. It was probably me but I thought "A Seed of a Lie" sounded a bit flat and was it my ears or did " A Question of Faith" seem out of tune? Probably me..... Enough! I enjoyed it immensly and can only hope that Gary keeps his promise and tours again in the Autumn.... I immediately fell to my knees and offered my own throat surgically removed to aid the great man. I then remebered I was on the phone.
