Sunday wasn't the best time to cross me as I had a severe sense of humour failure. I certainly didn't expect a public slagging from Alexander Deacon (100603.3353@compuserve.com), especially after what he said to me in an email of 17 September. When I've posted my Gary/Beryl/Tony stories, I've felt bad about doing it. I've always felt that it would lead to jealousy, envy etc. etc. Indeed, I've indicated this when I've posted them. But numerous people write in to say they enjoy these stories and beg me not to stop. Well, I will now be stopping them with immediate effect. Please take this up with Mr Deacon if you're upset with this. Maybe the public are just too familiar with it to need to own it. "Premier Hits" entered the album chart at 21. Doesn't that make PH the highest charting album by Gary since "The Fury"? Thank you for welcoming me to the list. I've been a Numanoid since the early 80's. I've never seen the man live, but I'm saving to see him on his next tour. I'm green with envy reading all the reviews of those Numanoids fortunate enough to see the man live -UGH! In addition to Numan I also like Test Dept., Skinny Puppy, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Lotus Eaters, Missing Persons, Throwing Muses...etc. I like a wide variety of music. I'm still stuck in the 80's where music is concerned, but there are a few new bands that have sparked some interest. The only Numan videos that I have seen are the one's for "Cars" and "Down In the Park", the latter is from Urgh! A Music War. I remember seeing a video that Sony released around 1984/5, it was a various artist video but it included the video for "Change Your Mind", does anyone know which video I'm talking about? I've been looking around for some "Japan only" Numan material, but am yet to find anything. Here in Japan Numan stuff is not very easy to find, I've seen some stuff on CD but it's material that I already have on vinyl. If anyone knows of anything that was only released in Japan let me know so I know what to look out for. I'm looking forward to the the next digest and contact with other Numanoids. To: numan internet chat lett Anyone else out there going to be at the Manchester Apollo gig this Friday (April 5th)? I was hoping to be able to sport the famous Imp t-shirt I ordered a month ago as a sort of "in-crowd" thing but no sign of it. Sigh... So if you're wearing one and someone approaches you who isn't, don't tell them to push off :-) By the way, am I the only one to have problems with storing these digests in my WinCIM (Compuserve) cabinet ?, about half of them just say "Unable to Store message" and they end up getting deleted just to clear my IN box. Aaarrgggh.... Nice to see Numan on "Not fade Away" on ITV the other night, pity I hated almost everything he played apart from the (ever brilliant) Sisters of Mercy. I normally love Depeche Mode, but that track he picked - eeuurgh. Nice timing in the adverts BTW, his "Premier Hits" album being plugged in one of the intervals. Ste C. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Apr 96 13:19:13 BST From: P Lindsay Subject: more reviews... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all, more gig reports to bore you .... I went to Glasgow last saturday (with my sister, who came to her first Numan gig after ~10 years of me wiffling on about Gary. She couldn't wipe the grin off her face, finally getting to see Gary do all those 'Gary'-things. I think this was my 12th or 13th time - can't remember and I've lost some of the older tickets). Anyhow, we got seats in the second row which changed into standing at the front after the support buggered off ('CODE' or something. wasn't terribly impressed). The curtain dropped to reveal the set mentioned by previous reviewers to the usual whoops and screams. Gary launched into Prophecy, sounded a bit odd, then stopped the band and said to the crowd "At this point I'd be lying if I told you that everything was going totally smoothly.". He said that the monitors at the front of the stage weren't working (meaning that he couldn't hear what he was singing or what the band was playing). "I hope you don't mind if we start again.". After that everything went stormingly. The set list was the same as the other gigs except that he finished with We are Glass. The sound all the way through was amazing - it had real guts, and while the older ones went down really well (like Are you Real?, Films, Noise Noise, Everyday I die etc), the Sacrifice stuff was as good. I think A Seed of a Lie is a brilliant song. The Exile material was also well recieved, and IMO is way better than Sacrifice, which always sounded better live than on CD. More 'tuneful', slightly evil. I bought a long sleeved T-shirt and a program. The shirt is much higher quality than previous years (my Isolate tour T-shirt has gone all funny shapes in the wash, and Outland isn't visible anymore), and the design is cool - anyone with a copy of Microsoft Word should recognize the Candelabra symbol from the 'Insert- symbol' menu. I think it must be a symptom of Gary's new-found Apple Mac literacy. Time will tell whether or not I can keep the T-shirt the same shape as when I bought it. On the other hand, the program was very slight, not much to it at all, and not really worth the fiver paid. Cool pictures though. Yesterday I went to see the gig at Rock City in Nottingham. Since it's unseated we (myself and a non-fan coerced into coming) nearly got to the front, but it didn't really matter, since it's a pretty small venue anyway. Because the stage was small there was none of the large set dressing at the other venues, just lights. Funnily enough, the lights were far more impressive in Nottingham than they were in Glasgow, in a much bigger hall - although still not as good as Dream Corrosion or DarkLight. The support band were Eroticist, kind of odd stuff. I don't know whether I liked them or not, but they were good performers. (no, on balance I did like them) As Gary came on the place was full and roaring. I take back everything I said about audiences being quiet at Numan gigs - you could tell Gary was enjoying it too. He just stood there and lapped it up. Maybe this really is his time again. Same set list as before, and a great reaction from the crowd for the older songs. Films was very, very powerful, and had a great guitar solo in it - totally appropriate, not overplayed like Kipper was sometimes. It really added to the song, rather than just mindless widdling (musical term, otherwise known as fret-wanking). Everyday I die was great, although it is _exactly_ the same as before. Cars seems to be evolving as a song, or at least the arrangement is. The intro is getting a bit hackneyed though. Are you Real? is dead cool. Can I just say, I really, really don't like Absolution. boring. My friend had a great time, loved the music, although he said he didn't recognize a lot of it from the Sacrifice and DarkLight CDs I'd lent him ie it was more powerful in real life. He is a guitarist and doesn't own any synth-type music at all, so all in all a bit of a triumph on that score. Forgot to mention that I met Gary at a signing sesh in HMV that day as well - nothing major, just a 'hi', sign these please, and a bit of a chat. He refused to sign my Private Pilot's Licence (I've just lost my medical because I've had a couple of blackouts, which means that I can't fly anymore, so the licence is invalid), and said that Gemma had the same thing a few weeks ago, and they want to take her driving licence away for a year. Bummer huh? Not much of a conversation, but it made my day. sorry to go on so long, but it's been a busy weekend. If I get too bored I can always try to get a ticket for Birmingham or Manchester later this week. speak to you all soon, Phil. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Apr 1996 14:45:15 +0100 (BST) From: "J. Garland" Subject: Nottingham Rock City To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Nottingham Rock City was packed to the rafters as Gary and the band appeared. Because the stage is so small there was none of the cathedral stage set that had been in evidence at other venues, but the lightshow was still very impressive. >From the first song to the last, Gary appeared to be really into it and enjoying himself. Highlights included 'Noise Noise', 'Dark' and a truly spooky and powerful version of 'Absolution'. The audience reaction was very loud and intense, and it was great to see so many people dancing! After two encores (TLove and NapalmU and TWe Are GlassU followed by TRemind Me To SmileU) Gary left the stage beaming from ear-to-ear, almost bewildered by the crowdUs response. The rest of the band seemed chuffed, too. If the rest of the tour lives up to this standard, then weUre in for a treat as this was one of the best gigs IUve ever seen Gary do! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Apr 1996 22:23:22 -0800 From: gymnif@isomedia.com (James Masterson) Subject: Numan Wanted List To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello! I think Derek's (and I can't remember the other guy's name, apologies) idea of maintaining a wanted list is a great idea. I've read from time to time the general record and CD wanted list and sold one or two items to the people who've posted there. This list will be good for many reasons: 1) People like me who buy and sell things can find a market for these specialized items without having to try to sell them to the general internet population. 2) People who have the inclination and the availability of items in their area can buy them for people who might not have the same access to items. For me, I could take the want list into the shops I frequent and buy things for others, making little or no profit, knowing I have a probale sale at a specific price. Hopefully this will distribute items from Numan rich areas to Numan poor areas. "Automatic" was released on CD in 1989 in the UK and Germany. It was deleted some time ago but copies do turn up here and there. Fortunately Europe is unlike Japan where CDs are withdrawn on particular days and copies of CDs are murderous to obtain thereafter. You will most likley have to rely on luck and used sources to find a copy. If the Digest wanted CDs list gets going, you may have success.
