I'd like to say a few things with respect to the Digest. I don't think it helps anyone to take sides or spout vitriol. It lessen's what sense of community we have. I don't think the Digest is the appropriate place for this as it is not directly related to Gary, rather it is an interaction between subscribers to the Digest. Therefore it's place is elsewhere, preferably email, otherwise alt.flame. Again, there is a lesson for us all to learn here. Without trying to take sides, in my opinion, the original post was innappropriate in that form (omitting smileys or any indication it was intended to be light hearted), and the response was an overreaction. I have repeatedly found that humour on the net has to be handled delicately and usually with an explicit indication that a piece is intended to be humorous. And I am sad that the net result of all this may be we lose what I found to be a most enjoyable and illuminating series of reports. Again, the Digest and the on-line Numan community lose out. Seems to happen everytime something erupts like this. So, please, I ask politely, please do not post any more about this issue to the Digest. If the parties cannot settle their differences in email, then so be it. Back to regular programming........ Digest not listed in Premier Tour programme :-( ----------------------------------------------- While many of the WWW sites were listed in the tour program, Joey Lindstrom reported that the Digest was not, even though Gary considers it and gave me permission to consider it part of the Numan Network 1996. I am a little saddened by that as we were the first on-line Numan resource dating back to 1992 and the Digest is the most interactive of the available resources. I feel it still has a niche, especially for those who do not have WWW access and for discussion. Basically, I too have had plenty of messages of support! Some have termed this a war. I wouldn't go that far - but I repeat that it was a shock to see something written in that manner. Maybe if there had been a warning that it was on the way, things would have been better. As it was, it did seem like a personal attack. It would be the same if a message was produced in the style of someone who has English as a second language or who uses UPPERCASE all the time etc. etc. And on the subject of "the fawning reportage", we've had this debate with others before. Basically, publicising anything that is looking positive and good for Gary cannot really be considered as "fawning". I remember someone writing in at the end of last year who laughed at the thought that Gary would ever get on TOTP again. The signs were there and they were reported. The address was in the digest. This isn't an etiquette issue. I, for one, thought Alexander Deacon's message was hilarious (and his 'apology' even funnier). If you set yourself up as a public figure, you have to expect that your *public* comments to result in occasional public mockery. Anyone who has trouble dealing with that should not be acting as a conduit for information between a famous person and the Internet. I also thought Alexander was pretty gentle and brief, compared to some of the things I'd have been tempted to say... Compared to Time Out's review of Gary Numan's tour, it was practically a bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates. The message was a pastiche, rather like the "Diary" section at the end of each issue of Private Eye (*). It was poking fun at the style of Matthew's messages, not their presence in the digest. Sulking is not a useful response. Look at it this way, Matthew: does it really matter to you what Alexander thinks? Does it matter so much that you'll stop posting because he doesn't like your style? mathew [ (*) UK satirical magazine. ] -- http://freethought.tamu.edu/~meta/ are you living in the future / are you running from the past has your life become uncertain / will your run of good luck last? ------------------------------ Date: 8 Apr 1996 22:34:54 U From: "Joe Abell" Subject: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!! The updates are as of April 9, 1996 and include the Premier Hits material, Berserker CD reissue, and other miscellanous updates. For those of you who prefer to simply view the discography via a web browser like Netscape, I will be forwarding on a copy of the discography to Joey Lindstrom as soon as he returns from his worldwind tour of the UK. My name is Brian Eyles (FC No. 2579) and I've been a fan since AFE (Thankyou John Peel). I've been lurking the digest for a while now so I thought that it was time to get stuck in. I saw Gary at Milton Keynes on saturday night (must be getting on for the 30th time, I've lost count) and once again, an excellent show. The Woughton Centre is not a big place (although when I saw him there on the 'Emotion' tour we were in the smaller hall down the corridor, so ticket sales must have been up!) so we didn't get the full 'cathedral' set - agh!, but the Roboscans made up for it. Songwise, I won't list the set but I think I need to hear the new songs again before I make Judgement, I would say that Gary hasn't moved on much from 'Sacrifice'. It was great to hear 'Are you real?' live and the set as a whole was very powerful. The lowpoint for me was 'Absolution', which is just banal - sorry folks. The new guitarist, Rob Harris, was great - nice clean, sharp playing, not the 'fret-wanking' of Kipper (nicely put, P. Lindsay/previous digest, couldn't have put it better myself. Kipper did bring a lot more energy to the live shows than they had in earlier years (Berserker onwards), but I payed my money to see Numan, not Kippers spandex crotch). The new keyboard player (David Brooks) is crap, he made the keyboard solo of 'Are you real?' sound like it was being stabbed out in morse code. (or something. ahem.) I bought a XL long-sleeved tour shirt (=A312) and I'm not a 'happy bear'. =46irstly the shirts are low grade 'promo' quality (trust me - I work in the screenprint/textile trade so I know what I'm talking about), secondly the 2 colour print on the front is out of register and lastly no way is this shirt 'extra large' - I buy XL's because I like them baggy - this shirt only just fits. The first time this goes in the wash I'll never be able to get into it again (and no, I'm not a fat b*st*rd). On the subject of Matt Holbrook/Alex Deacon I am stuck 50/50. I think it was unneccesary for Alex to take the piss out of Matt because of his connections (after all, it's these connections that makes Matts Web site so good - I wouldn't have known about the Noels House Party slot if it had not been for the Nu-Zone) but by the same score Matt does come across sometimes as though he's rubbing in the 'me and Gary' bit. Nuff said. Mind you, perhaps I'll go 60/40 in Matts favour as Alex also slagged off Jesus Jones and there is nothing wrong with them - I saw them live on the 'Doubt' tour and they've got balls! (mind you, I wonder how many Numanoids rushed out to buy 'Perverse' last week just because Gary said it was his favourite album?). One thing that often concerns me is the ongoing Numan/Radio One/Media thing. Machman (J. Hendry) mentioned in a previous digest that he thought the 'Numan day of action' only helped to make the airplay situation worse. I am inclined to agree with this as I am sure that Radio One was not going to be dictated to by a group of fans waving flags saying "Play Numan or I'll tell my dad". Okay, at least they got off their backsides and did something but I think that it tended to make Gary look a bit of a sad man. Healthy chart positions are important and that means us all buying the records in the first week of release to help push the songs into the top 40 where they will (hopefully) get noticed more. The problem with this appears to be Gary and Pinnacle. I've never known someone have so many cock-ups with printers as Gary, (the tour programme being yet another example) sleeves are always late or wrong and then when we are given a release date Pinnacle don't deliver the goods. It took me nearly 2 months to get the 'Question of Faith' single, by which time my purchase was in no way going to help towards a good chart position. Everyone seems to be saying at the moment that Gary is on the way back up, but what are they doing to capitalise on the attention drawn by the Carling promotion? where is the follow-up single to 'Cars'? On a lighter note, does anyone remember when the 'Brit' awards started back in 1980? They were called the British Music Awards and were sponsored by the Daily Mirror. Anyway, Gary won best male singer and accepted his award via satellite as he was on tour at the time. I only mention this as the media makes such a fuss about the awards these days, but the Gary's 'been there and done that'. (Feel free to correct me on this, I'm quoting from memory). I would welcome some Email regarding live bootlegs, especially stuff like the Roxy '77 album, etc.. so feel free to Email or flame me, I've got broad shoulders (too broad for my tour shirt, apparently, but that's not funny). By the way, the 'candelabra' symbol used on the Premier tour programme and set is 'psi', the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet (someone earlier suggested a key command from microsoft turd). To: Numan Digest [Lurk off] Much as I loath to be perpetuating the 'petty rivalry' we all hate to see clogging the Digest, I am compelled to post a note of support for Matthew Holbrook. I was amazed at some of the comments coming out in Digest #216 - after I read Mr Deacon's [pale attempt at a] joke in the previous digest I thought he'd get a trouncing next time out. Sadly, there seem to be few people you are willing to admit that they do envy Matthew's access to Gary Numan. Matthew, I for one look forward to your Numan stories, and I don't give a damn about how "fawning" you may care to make them. I simply relish hearing personal accounts and insights about a man whose career I've followed for 17 years, because there are precious few other means of hearing this information. I think some people are forgetting how lucky we are to have such direct access to Gary, whether it be through his own communications with the Digest or through the good efforts of people like Derek and yourself. Still, I did think his reply to what he interpreted as a criticism of his "personal meetings with Gary" stories was certainly a petulant gut reaction, very much "I'm gonna take my ball and go home." Also what I kind of resent is what is implied by his refusal to post any more of those stories; that I think he expects all of us to rise up in one voice and go "Ooh PLEEEEEEEASE Matt don't stop posting your stories, PLEEEEEEASE!" Frankly, Matt, your tales of visting Gary and Beryl and the lot are enjoyable and often informative. But they're not the sort of thing we're all going to get our panties in a knot about if you never contribute another one. So post those stories if you like or don't. The Numan Digest is mainly for the discussion of Gary and his music and I don't think it's appropriate for any one Numanoid to set himself on a higher rung than any other just because he associates personally with Gary. We're grown-ups here on this list and our image of Gary (if I can presume to speak for many Numanoids) is that of a hard-working dedicated man, not some godlike pop-star whose presence we should be awed over. We aren't waiting for Matt or anyone else who meets Gary to brush any stardust off his collar in the hopes it flutters down upon us. (Please bear with me since there's a lot I want to cover) London : *great* city but damn confusing street wise! As a rule Canadian and US cities are so much easier to get around in. The people: In general everyone was friendly ; I don't understand why the British have the reputation of being shall we say ...cold and reserved, I had a great time and I definitely plan on going again. My time in England ( the extended version): Now that my tourist bit is out of the way what about the show at the Hammersmith ? I hadn't seen Gary perform live for 16 years so I got there early to scope the place out and get a feel of the audience beforehand. You can't imagine the emotion I felt on the tube when halfway on in pop in 3 fans wearing Premier tour t-shirts.It was even more powerful than going in any record store and finding Numan records with no problems!Remember that they are not that easy to find for us in North America... Now as we get closer more and more fans hop on and I can't help feeling a bit envious since these fans get shows regularly. But tonight I'll be there too and I'm not alone anymore. It's way too early so I go to a nearby pub where the regulars are outnumbered by fans .What a change! Of course my digest t-shirt is a hit since I'm the only one wearing one and I chat with a few and explain how the digest works since these guys don't own computers. It's now close to 8 pm so I go in to see the support band but to put it kindly I could have stayed for another beer...not my style at all to say the least. I can't compare Gary's performance since I only saw the last show, but he seems to be in good form. He's pissed off at the fact that his stage set is cramped due to the other set that still back there, " this fuckin' Joseph and the technicolor dreamcoat " is the way he puts it... but he works around that, even if he's got basically no place to move... The lighting, the sound and the performance is simply awsome and he performs the songs others have mentioned. The audience is on it's feet for the whole 1h45min ; is it always like that I wonder?( we sit down after 1 or 2 songs :) )I think I'll have great pictures nevertheless... I wish he could have played longer since it was a holiday on Monday but no such luck.He must be weary since he didn't stop one minute.A fantastic show and the audience is hooked right from the start, just like in the live recordings I have back home. My only regrets: not meeting other digest members and not being able to go to the party after since it's in the opposite direction to my hotel and I have to get up early to catch my plane. I just don't think I can make it and I go back thinking " here am I,sad and lonely " without my much wanted autograph...That means I'll have to go back of course! A last note to any overseas fans that plan to attend the next tour : sign on for the coach that follows Gary or make sure that you have a couple of days to spare , that's what I'll do next time; I had no choice but to go back on Monday because I had to be at work. I hope I didn't bore anyone with this long post ; cheers Michel. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Apr 1996 18:22:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Robert Trousdale Subject: Oh, it was a joke? The first was from Alexander Deacon who openly trashed Matt Holbrook and the other from Matt himself who now refuses to post any more messages! Dear, Oh Dear! First of all, when I read Alexander's post, I thought he and Matt were friends and this was just some simple comraderie so I just dismissed it. However, when I read Matt's response, this obviously wasn't the case. This really bugs me because Matthew has, time and time again, voiced his concerns about being misinterpretted as snooty because of his unique and fortunate relationship to the Webb Family. Despite his fears, he still continues to share his interesting information with everyone in the Digest. His meticulous dedication should be praised and encouraged. Matt obviously spends alot of his free time, energy, and yes, Money, in the pursuit to obtain this information and provide the much needed support for Gary. And chances are, he is not making one brass farthing off any of it! This is obviously a labor of love and it shows . Nu zone is an excellent site. Believe me, Matt knows he is meticulous and often laughs at it all himself, but nevertheless, he thinks the info is important and he wants to share it! Now here comes Alexander Deacon and his post which was a metaphoric slap in the face to everything Matt's accomplished. Why shouldnt Matt be angry? His job is a mostly thankless one. In addition, Alexander's post not only insulted Matt, but the entire Webb family, which Matt has become close to. This was really unneccessary. How would any of you feel if someone publicly mocked something you personally felt very strongly about? Im an engineer for the Navy and have a Masters Degree and ten years of experience. If someone at work told me that I was incompetant or openly ridiculed one of my designs or decisions, I would be mad as hell! Now, having said all that, I have to say, Alexander, that I have posted and faxed some real doosies myself, with totally good intentions in mind. They alway got misinterpretted and got alot of people very angry. I guess those are the chances you take so I know how you feel. Im not saying you posted that message as a malicious act. It could very well be that it was simply misinterpretted as well. When things like that happened to me, I was very forthright with a written apology and explanation. I sincerely hope that you would show Matt, who is obviously very upset, the same respect, hopefully in the same open forum in which your original message was posted. I would also like to say to anyone else to please be a little more tolerant. Matt has been "sharing his toys" with hundreds of people for a very long time. I really hope that Alex and Matt can settle this misunderstanding and we can all continue to enjoy the open exchange of info. Thanks.
