I had to delve back into previous Q&A sessions to get particulars about some people :-( PLEASE NOTE! Send your questions via email to: Derek Langsford with a subject line of: Gary's Qs Include your real name, town/city, county/province/state and country. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Please follow these directions carefully and DO NOT post your questions to the Digest. Use a question from a posted session as a guide to the best format to use. Please write out fully the name of your state or province. I doubt if Gary would know the difference between MA, ME, MI and MO. It'd be really nice if you could copy the format of the questions as presented here. That would allow me to simply copy and paste questions into my email to Gary rather than spend an hour or so formatting them all. ----- Gary's responses to this month's questions were delayed a few days due to the Premier Tour but being the trooper he is, he got them to me after only a week's break. Gary admits to feeling strangley unfulfilled now, even though the tour was great on virtually all counts. He needs to get his motivation back. Let's hope that happens soon. Onto the questions: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Andy McHaffie of Reading, Berkshire, UK asks: I heard about the Techno Army CD thats due for release, and got pretty excited about it. Then I heard rumours that it wasnt techno at all, but more reminiscent of 80's dance stuff. Q1. Have you thought of getting any stuff remixed by cutting edge techno artists such as The Prodigy, or Chemical Brothers ? A1. No, I haven't thought about getting anything remixed by anybody. I don't like techno music and I couldn't afford to use people like The Prodigy even if I wanted to and, to be honest, what would be the point? I want to sell what I do to people not other peoples versions of my music. I would be more than happy for anyone to re-record my stuff but only if it went out under their name. Stuff that goes out as Gary Numan will have to be my work, not somebody elses remix of it. I'm really looking forward to the show at the Astoria, and / or Hammersmith, and can I say how happy I am that you have some 1st class support bands this year ! ---- Mark Mihok, Seattle, Washington, USA asks: Dear Gary: I was looking over the notes in 'Exhibition' and noticed Bill Nelson's name in the musician list. Q2. Which track(s) did you work with Bill on? A2. I can't remember what tracks are on 'Exhibition' but anything from the 'Warriors' album and associated singles will have Bill Nelson on them. Q3. Also, if you are familiar with his music, what is your opinion of it? A3. I think Bill Nelson is a superb musician and an excellent producer. When we worked together though our outlook on life and its meaning were so far apart from each other that we ended up not exactly getting on that well which was a shame. Thank you, -Mark ---- Julian Ashcroft (ash@enterprise.net) in the Isle of Man, United Kingdom I was interested and pleased to see that you had taken up motorcycling in the last year or so. I have been riding bikes for the 16 years myself, originally as my sole mode of transport and now just for fun. Q4. Why did you choose the Yamaha Virago as your first proper bike Gary? Having ridden one myself I found I quite enjoyed the ride and it was comfortable, but it is a bit of a girls bikes isn't it? (no offence Gary). I would have thought you would be more suited to a race replica or an Italian classic like the Ducati 916. A4. I like custom bikes is the main reason. I read a lot of bad things about Harley's, liked the look of the Virago anyway and so thought that it would make an ideal first bike. Not too big or powerful but big enough to feel a definite progression from a leaner. The Ducati would appear to fall apart quite easily and as I have no mechanical knowledge to speak of I need something that will keep running with a minimum of fuss. I don't understand at all this idea of the Virago being a girls bike though. It's size suits me perfectly as I'm only 5' 8" tall, it does about a hundred miles an hour which is more than you need for a bike with no fairing and no screen. In my opinion it is also much better looking than any race rep but that is obviously a personal thing. My girlfrind loves it but hates most other bikes so that was also an important consideration and, finally, people are forever saying that custom bikes handle badly but they mistakenly assume that everyone on a bike wants to be the next Mick Doohan. Well I don't, I want a bike that looks great and gets me where I want to go at the speeds and in the style that I want to travel. The Virago is what appeals to me the most and, at the moment, fulfills all my biking needs. ---- Matthew Tamea of London, UK. Hi Gary, Welcome back after the tour. Even though it's not over yet (1st April), it's been a fantastic tour already. It's great to see you back on stage with some great audiences. I guess a lot of people will be asking questions about the tour but I'll add my tuppence worth! Q5. What was the high point for you on the tour? And the low point? Have you any idea when the Southampton gig will be screened? A5. Firstly Matthew thank you for the warner bros post card. The low point was passing out after the gig at Ipswich due to a viral infection of some kind. This illness was with me for quite a few days and the hectic schedule of the tour made it hard to recover from. The high points were several. After the crushing irritation at the small stage size left to us at Hammersmith (it was filled by the set of the Joseph musical) the audience reaction was just incredible and finished the tour off in spectacular fashion. Milton Keynes was a great and welcome surprise. I'd almost written it off as one to 'get out of the way' but the crowd were great and it became one of my best nights. The London Astoria was heaving, as was the Nottingham Rock City gig. To be honest it all went so well it's impossible trying to pick out any one show as being the best. The audiences were just excellent throughout. At the moment I have no idea when the Southampton show will be screened. It was great to see you on the ITV programme 'Not Fade Away'. I found it extremely interesting to see which videos you picked and why. Some good stories too. I think the Bowie one was very popular! It's just a shame it was on the time it was. Q6. How did you find it presenting this programme? Was it difficult to just have you and the camera? At points you seemed a little embarrassed maybe...were you or was it just because it was something a little different than normal tv stuff that you are asked to do? A6. No, I wasn't embarrassed. I found it quite easy actually. In fact I've also been asked to host a day, or an evening, of programmes on the Sci- Fi satellite and cable channel. I'm not sure if I'll do it yet but it shows that I did okay on 'Not Fade Away'. Q7. What are your thoughts on the problem of BSE? I ask because I was just wondering what you are eating without your steak and hamburgers!!! Just chips? Or are you carrying on as normal? A7. I'm carrying on as normal. When you look at how many people have got the illness compared to how many have been exposed to it it seems more likely that I'll win the lottery than get mad cow disease. Q8. I saw an advert in The Standard for an event in Chelmsford in August with Pulp, Supergrass, Cast, and yourself amongst others. Are you definitely booked for this event? A8. Yes. It's two festivals over a weekend. The first day we are all in Chelmsford and the second day we are in Warrington. I've never done a festival before, never even been to one, so I'm extremely nervous about it. I'm hoping that a large amount of my fans will go along so that I have a core of support amongst the crowd. They are expecting about thirty thousand people a day. Thanks for the great shows over the last couple of weeks. It'll be too long until the next tour! All the best - Matthew. ---- Andy McHaffie of Reading, Berkshire, UK says: Hi Gary. The Astoria show was such good fun. Even my bass player enjoyed it (who came along very sceptical...) Q9. Anyway, my question is what happened to Sheep On Drugs ? I was really looking forward to them. I dunno who the band were, but they were pretty boring... Q9. Sheep On Drugs played at Folkestone and went down so badly that they pulled themselves off the tour. They wanted to go on stage and fire a gun filled with blanks into the audience which my tour manager refused to allow. This was only a few days after the Dunblane massacre of school children so I think he was right to stop them from a disgustingly tasteless piece of 'entertainment'. I had 50 minutes of soundcheck time, they had over 75 minutes and still complained that it wasn't enough. Bearing in mind that they are two men and a fucking tape recorder and you begin to see how pathetic their complaints were beginning to sound. During their set they insulted me personally and the audience generally so the reaction to their music was poor to say the least. Even after all that I was not particularly bothered and was happy for them to do the other gigs as agreed but they decided to pull out. So much for the hard attitude then, one bad gig and run away. Sheep On Drugs and Gary Numan could have been such an awesome, unreal show!!!!!! But thanks again for a wonderful fun night! ---- Dan Coffey of Princeton, New Jersey, USA asks: Q10. How do you feel the Premier tour went? I live in the US and have seen great reviews but I would like to know your opinion. A10. I thought it went remarkably well. The new songs went down better than I could possibly have hoped for, the attendance was better than it has been for at least 12 years, maybe longer, in most places that we played. I did 5 signing sessions at HMV shops around the country and all were full of people. The band played brilliantly, everyone got on well, the atmosphere both on stage and off was just brilliant. Q11. On the Dance album, who is Zara??? Is it a literary character? A11. She was someone who tried to play head games. She was actually a friend of the girl that it is the subject of 'We Take Mystery' and 'Moral' so it was probably connected. Q12. I remember you played "Stormtrooper in Drag" for Paul on the last tour...have you, or do you ever plan to, sneak in 'Child with a Ghost' on any upcoming shows....the song is beautiful. A12. No plans to but each tour I look at my choices so it's quite possible for the future. It was actually on an early list for the Premier Tour come to think of it. As usual, anxiously awaiting a US Numan tour! (as are you, i'm sure.) thanks once again....dan ---- Derek Langsford of San Diego, California, USA asks: As fewer questions are being asked this month I'll add a few more than usual. First welcome back to Cyberspace. Q13. Many have mentioned the stunning stage set you used on the Premier Tour and I have seen the new wardrobe you are using to promote the material. Were these all your own creation or did someone help out with design and will they be maintained for the "Exile" promotion and possible tour? A13. The image was put together by me and Gemma simply by walking around and looking at all the various options and then piecing together a 'look' bit by bit. The stage set was a result of many talks between me and Andy Keightley, the lighting designer, based on lyrical ideas from the new songs and from various bits of artwork that I was already working on. The NuWORLD site 'gold look' was already, in my mind at least, the way that I wanted the tour to go. The brickwork backdrop and riser cladding was an extension of the marbling idea seen on NuWORLD. I will have a special tour section on-line on the NuWORLD site in the very near future which will look at the tour and all it's various elements in some detail. Q14. Now you are able to look back on the tour, did you find the shorter set worked out better in terms of logistics and stamina? A14. Absolutely. It was more punchy as a show, easier to rehearse both musically and in the light programming and was much less wearing physically. It was lucky that I did shorten the set as the programming week leading up to show 1 was one of the hardest weeks I can remember. Sleep became a distant memory for most of it. We had big problems with the moving lights which had been redesigned without our knowledge and no longer did what we wanted them to do. Again, more of this on NuWORLD soon. Q15. Some noted again your superior vocal performance on this tour. It almost seems like you are putting extra effort into your vocals whereas before they were very stylized and often slurred. Has that been a conscious decision or an evolution over time? A15. Definitely not a conscious decision although I'm very glad to hear that people think my vocals are better now. I suppose the PA system might have something to do with it as they do seem to be better these days. On the other hand I am getting older and the voice does seem to be improving with age. On this particular tour I moved differently in that it was more subtle and less frantic which meant that I could concentrate on the singing a lot more than previous tours. I think that may be the main factor to be honest. Q16. Now the tour is over are you going to take a break or do you need to get back to work on "Exile" promptly? A16. I've just given myself a week off to get my sleep pattern back to normal and to recover in general but then, as of today actually, I intend to get back into 'Exile' with some urgency. Q17. "Metal Beat" is a gem of a song. A very pleasant surprise on "Babylon 7". I am surprised you did not release it as a b-side. Can you remember why it wasn't? A17. I didn't like it very much at the time was the main reason. It was one of those rare things for me where a song was actually taken to near completion and then just abandoned and forgotten. Normally I dump songs far sooner and so have nothing to forget. I'm glad you like it and now I think it would have made a good b-side as well. Typical of me unfortunately. Bye for now. Milam, Jr." asked about p & c dates on his "Berserker" CD. The CD you have is no doubt the 1995 issue. It is unlikley to be used or date from 1991, unless someone got hold of the 1991 Fan Club issue and sold a copy as new. One way to determine which you have - look at the CD itself. Is the writing on it black or blue? If it's black, you have the 1995 issue, if it's blue it's the 1991 Fan Club disc. I have emailed with Gary about the confusing dates. "Berserker" was released on vinyl and cassette in 1984. The vinyl was about 45 mins long. The cassette had extended mixes of all but 'Pump It Up', 'The God Film' and 'A Child with the Ghost'. It was just short of 60 mins long. In 1991, the UK GN Fan Club pressed a run of 2000 CDs for Fan Club members. The disc contained the cassette versions and was p and c 1991. This I think was an error because the music was originally p and c in 1984. This error was then transcribed to the general 1995 release. I brought it to Gary's attention after it was too late. Maybe a digital issue date should be aded to all albums so "Berserke" would be p & c 1984, d 1991 and 1995. Similarly the CDs should really be NUMACDX 1001 as it is the extended version, not the vinyl version. Gary did not dismiss my suggestion that the vinyl versions be released at a later date, maybe via the Fan Club. As for CD availability among stores, different stores use different distributors. Some are also just lazy as imports are a lot of work compared to domestic releases to order and sell. Some have better connections and can do a decent job. Depends on local demand I would expect. ---- Daniel/ Dj 0977 asked abotu the Cars 96 remix. Well, it's not really a 96 remix if it's the "Premier Mix" you are writing about. It's the same as the 1987 "E Reg. Model". If you ahve eihter "Asylum vol 2" or the "Warriors/TPP" 2CD set from the UK, you will have the 12" version and the 7" inch version is on "Exhibition". A new remix is out on vinyl in the UK as publicized on THe Numan Complex at http://web.ukonline.co.uk/Members/paul.denman/NUMAN.htm "A new remix EP has surfaced! It is a "Cars" remix, and goes under the name of 'The Witchman Remixes'. It is available as a very limited edition orange vinyl 12", after that it is due to be repressed onto black vinyl. It has been released by 'Momentum' and is distributed by Amarto." ---- paddygav@magic1.org (Paddy) wondered what happened to Kipper and the old Dramatis band members. FYI, Ade Orange did play on the Premier Tour. Gary has to bring in two new people when Kipper and John Webb had other commitments. I think many fans appreciate the change from Kipper's "fret wanking" (great phrase - BTW, there's an area to the SW of Portland, Oregon called Wanker's Corner which raised my eyebrow's when looking at a map of the area :-) Gary indicated in one of the previous Q & A sessions what he thought the old band members were doing. He's lost touch with virtually all of them. Check out the "Confession" section of Joey Lindstroem's World Wide Webb (sic) page. The answer's in there somewhere http://www.netway.ab.ca/numanoid/wwwebb.htm OK, that's it. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. If it was it was taken very well >care of(no scratches or other signs of being used). I think I can field this one as I posted a similar question to the digest a few months ago. In response, a few digesters explained this dilemma to me, now referred to as "The Berserker Confusion" ... Let's set the "way back machine" to 1984 when the Berserker songs were written ... (click, click, click) The CD format is still new and just coming into vogue. Berserker is released on vinyl followed by an extended version released on cassette. In 1991 the re-mixed extended version was released on CD in limited quantity to the fan club only. Because it was a different mix then the original 1984 vinyl release, it carried the new copyright date of 1991 (hence the date on the back of the CD). After much begging from the fans, a re-issue of the CD was made in 1995, but the original 1991 date appears as it is the same as the 1991 CD release (except for one of the photos which had to be redone). Yes Ralph, your Berserker CD is indeed brand spanking new! Now pick it up and hold it in your hand. Look at it. See how the light plays on its shiny surface? Now pop it into the CD player, close the tray, press play and crank the volume. Stand back.. back a little further.. close your eyes... breath in...... '! I think we would all like to see Gary do better *and* on his own terms. Chart positions gives an indication of how the reemergence of Gary is going in the UK. Don't forget, those outside the UK aren't privy to finding displays in record stores for "Premier Hits" or hearing/seeing Gary on the radio/TV (apart from the "Cars" original mix for the umpteenth time). Chart info gives an idea of how m,uch all the excitemtn we are feeling is penetrating the Uk masses. I find it curious that someone in California had to dig up the info to post when we have a substantial number of UK subscribers. >As much as Gary wants hits, I really hope he doesnt >compromise his music in order to get them (He tried that >from '88 to '91 and look what he came up with !) I agree 100%. But what is so amazing about the UK chart is that almost anything can hit the top 10. You should take a listen to US top 40 radio - it's so banal. Most US radio is much less than interesting. Everything is divided into genres. Top 40, classic (read dinosaur) rock, country, easy listening and alternative (which these days means guitar driven garage grunge). There's barely any synth-based music played on US radio whether it be synthpop, ambient, techno, trance etc. I think Gary's music in its current form could do well in the UK, if it were given the appropriate exposure and promotion. Fortunatly I think Gary knows not to go back to what he was doing in 88-91. But I hope that doesn't prevent him from exploring new avenues. Maybe it's a bit disappointing that Cars only made No 17, but the amount of publicity, TV appearances, interviews etc generated was so large as to really force Gary back into the public eye, which is the most important thing. Suddenly his gigs are sold out, he's on TOTP and the White Room, playing on the same bill as Pulp and Supergrass etc. I was one of those who met Markus at Hammersmith. His loyalty is amazing! My trip to the UK was EVERYTHING I hoped it would be and much, much more. I'll fill you all in on all the details in the next Digest - I am so "knackered" (a quaint British expression) right now that I'm falling asleep at the keyboard - I've been awake for nearly 24 straight hours. A few folks have mentioned close calls in catching their airplanes back home from these gigs. I hope you'll feel even better when I tell you that for me, the worst *DID* happen: I actually missed my plane home! Luckily I was able to get another one the next day (at no extra charge, THANK YOU CANADIAN AIRLINES!)... there's a long story there which I'll get to later in the week. In regards to the Holbrook versus Deacon saga - I think Deacon and all of his apologists should wake up and smell the coffee, and realize that jealousy is the ugliest of emotions. Matthew Holbrook isn't looking for your sympathy - from the day he posted his first "I've popped 'round Gary's place" message he has been VERY worried about people taking his postings the wrong way. Deacon's message was extremely ill-timed (as Matthew himself said) and it was bloody ill-mannered as well. I read it the day after it was published and have been ITCHING to get back to give him my two-bits worth - alas, so much has already been said that there's not much more I can add. Except to say this about Matthew: Matthew Holbrook didn't know me from anything. Up until the tour, we were two guys running Numan web sites and as such there was a slight bit of uneasiness between us (particularly when our interests overlap), although generally we got on quite well. He then suggested that we team up on this "Numanoids On Tour" coach thing in order to save costs (it's 15 pounds PER DAY more costly if you go as a single). I agreed, I sent him the money and he did all the footwork, booking us on the coach and handling all the ticket purchases. When I arrived in the UK we discovered quickly that we have two totally different personalities (he is quiet and reserved, I'm loud and obnoxious, he's always well groomed and I don't wear anything other than t-shirts, etc.) but we had Numan in common. And, despite all the differences, we got along absolutely great... he even put up with my cigarette smoking like a trouper. He bought drinks and meals (although I hadda put my foot down with him there, heh heh!) and, most importantly, gave me a THOROUGH "background education" as to what to expect once on the tour (from the fans, from Gary, etc.). My point here is that Matthew didn't have any reason to do this, and in fact had every reason not to. He did it because THAT IS THE KIND OF MAN MATTHEW HOLBROOK IS, and I am extremely proud to call that man a friend. We plan to stay in touch both via email and the occasional voice call, and we intend to team up again on a future tour. This decision to stop posting personal Numan stories (which I sincerely hope he reconsiders) is not, as some have stated, because he's trying to drum up sympathy and/or sycophancy. He genuinely does not want to cause anyone any ill feelings and he's decided that the few people that DO resent his posts outweigh the many more (such as myself) who enjoy them... plus, this attack from Alexander Deacon really hurt him, far more than he's admitted. Matthew Holbrook is a fantastic human being and a tremendous resource for all of us - I'm not asking anybody to suck up to him, but I *WILL* ask you all to treat him with just a little more respect. That's all, just some respect, and not because he IS able to rub shoulders with The Great Gary, but because he's willing to share that with us (which is itself sometimes a little bit risky, as he is "reporting" on private matters), to let us get a feel of what it would be like. As a fan in far-flung Canada, with almost-zero access to Gary and his music, I for one truly appreciate the vantage point. And for those of you who think I'm full of shit, well, hold off on your vitriolic replies for one more Digest - because in the next one, I'll give you a REAL reason to blast me. Because I plan to tell you about: 1) Meeting Gary and chatting with him on several occasions, including for nearly three hours at Southampton (on a wide variety of topics, including Quebec nationalism of all things!) 2) Gemma taking a photo of Gary and myself. 3) Richard Beasley buying me a drink (a Carling Premier Lager of course!) 4) Much, much more. (It might be superfluous to mention it now, but Matthew Holbrook was instrumental in much of my "success" on the tour) If you want to interpret my upcoming post as nothing more than rubbing your nose in it, as my saying "ha ha, I've met the man and you haven't!", then fine - send your nastigrams to my email address (numanoid@netway.ab.ca). However, I'm hoping that the majority of you will interpret it the way it's intended: I've lived a long-time dream and I want nothing more than to share it with you. Many of you won't ever get the opportunity I've had - this is as close as you'll ever come. That sucks, but I hope that I can provide some SMALL consolation for you by sharing my experiences. I'll sign off for now with my only disappointment: meeting very few 'netters on the tour. Those I did meet: Matthew Holbrook, Paul Denman, Robert Eggleston, and Andy McKenzie (a fellow Canadian who spotted my Calgary Flames shirt at Birmingham). I really wanted to hook up with Michel Lafontaine and a few others - alas it didn't happen (can't see how they bloody well missed me, I was the *ONLY* red shirt in a sea of black at the Hammersmith!) :-) I'm off for some kip, to use another Brit expression... /--------------------------------------------------------- / Joey Lindstrom / numanoid@netway.ab.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jan 1996 11:22:30 +0000 From: Paul Denman Subject: New (Not Premier) Cars & Berserker CD To: Gary Numan Reading through the Numan Digest V1 #218, I noticed that I may be able to help out on a couple of questions raised. But again, has anyone the new Cars '96 > rmx by any chance? > > Daniel Smith - Robi Do you mean the 'Premier Mix'? in which case, it is the "E-Reg" mix renamed. Or, do you mean the new underground "Witchman" remix? I received a copy through the post the other day; it's an orange-vinyl 12" and is an excellent mix. It was a very limited initial pressing - which according to the distributors has sold out already, but they are pressing a second batch, but maybe on black vinyl (? they haven't decided as of last Wednesday) I'm not sure how "official" this mix is, as it is being sold in the underground dance shops in the UK, and to be honest, when I rang the shop in Bradford they only new it as being by 'The Witchman' and not Gary Numan! ------------------- > After four months of waiting my Berserker CD arrived at the store > that ordered it for me. I thought this strange, for I was under the impression that all Numan/Beggar's material was released either as two shredded albums on one disc (in the eighties) or two fat albums on two discs (currently). It was on the Beggar's label, and had no extra tracks of any sort listed. What gives? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Apr 1996 09:45:02 -0400 From: NIN1969@aol.com Subject: short intro To: numan@cs.uwp.edu So you would like to know a little bit about me and my interests in Gary Numan. I am very excited to be able to hear about Gary and what he is up to lately, so filling this simple request is not a problem. My name is Ruthi and I have grown up with Gary's music. I was a teen during the early eighties and things here in New Jersey were not heavily influenced by the alternative scene, but I was. Some of my favorite artists, aside from Gary, are Missing Persons, Haircut 100, The Cure(early stuff), Depeche Mode(again, early stuff), Berlin, Ultravox, Kraftwerk and all of those other bands which made life worth living back then. I think I would trade just about anything to be 12 again and go through all of the fun one more time! The music was pure, the theme was fun and you could wear just about anything and be "hip". At 26 I can longer do that and hold my respectable job....... I don't play any instruments, since you asked, but I do sing and have quite a range( if I may toot my own horn), so that is fun. What else comes to mind?? I guess that I am hoping this will be fun to read about Gary and his music and what he is doing these days. They had him on VH-1 a couple of months ago and that was very cool. He still looks incredible and he seems to be the same person which made my day. It's not like he's been touring in the USA lately so it was nice to see him almost live! Hoping to have a blast....Ruthi ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Apr 1996 21:38:34 +-100 From: Neil Mitchell Subject: TechnoArmy now released. My view.... To: "'Gary Numan'" ------ =_NextPart_000_01BB2B14.D7BF4F40 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable For what it's worth this is what I think. I have just purchased Techno Army. Well my reaction is mixed!!! Some = of it is too lightweight and crap, some pretty bloody good for a club! 1. Are 'Friends' Electric? - Good track, similar to the original in some = ways, certainly not techno. I enjoyed this one. 2. Cars - Pretty damned average..... - a bit messy. 3. We are so Fragile - Bit more techno, I think this track lends itself = to techno anyway. I could see me getting down in a club to it. 4. We are glass - I really don't like We are Glass anyway, this one's = not much different, not good I think. 5. She's got claws - Jazz funk more than techno with some silly bits = that make it sound a little comical. 6. i die, you die - The start to this one is bloody brilliant, bit = ambient. When it gets going it certainly punch, again not techno. Bit = like the band Glasshouse in my view. 7. Deadliner - Jazz funk. A very good instruction on how to ruin an = excellent track! The way it has been done makes the lyrics sound = frivolous! - There is even a brass section in it, please!!! 8. Machine & Soul - This track really seems like a filler, they did = nothing interesting with it. Doesn't sound different enough to make it = worth listening to. 9. Emotion - Well this one is Jazz Funk, and I think that was Gary's = idea when it was first released, so I think it still sounds good as that = sort of track. Not bad. 10. A question of faith - The start of this sounds like a jungle! Much = like Deadliner, too frivolous!! 11. U got the look - Pretty good, female vocals on this one too. I = quite like it, but prefer Gary's cover of it. 12. Cars (Rush hour skadiva) - Bit more Techno, I like this one, I can = see me getting down to it in the clubs, pumping base line. Cool track. 13 Cars (talla 2xlc remix) - Now this is Techno!!! And it's bloody = excellent, real club sound! I will be taking this to my local club to = getthem to play it!!! =20 Overall, the album is a little lightweight. If TechnoArmy stayed with = their name and made the Album real techno like the last track I think it = would have been excellent. Gary's vocals were redone for this and I = think he did a sterling job of it. After all, when was the last time = Gary did a Studio vocal recording of Cars, AFE, We are so Fragile etc, = so it was good to hear it with his more mature voice. Good album get it! Derek Langsford enquired about the sound quality of the Premier Hits album.Well I'm delighted to say that the sound is fantastic!!!All the tracks are definitely digitally remastered and the man responsible,John Dent, has done a magnificent job.I noticed the difference as soon as I heard the first bars of I DIE:YOU DIE and immediately compared the quality of all tracks with my ASYLUM CD's.What a difference!!!I think the sound quality on Premier Hits is 3-5 times better than the ASYLUM collection. My advice is to buy the album on CD,plug your headphones into your CD player and you will be blown away by the awesome power.Down in the Park is a great example. In fact this whole album is top class.I know we all have the tracks already but the artwork, sleeve notes and design are truly excellent.Derek I know you're going to love it!Imagine how much better SACRIFICE could sound if Mr.Dent got his hands on the master copy.On this point I'd like to thank everyone who has supported my argument about the sound quality of Gary's recent albums.I'll reply at greater length soon but special thanks to Sean Francis,Angelzero and Derek Langsford for their intelligent and detailed replies.I'll send my tour report(s) soon but will leave for now with the news that British band,Dubstar, are doing a cover of 'Every Day I Die' during their recent live shows according to a fan I met at HMV - Manchester and that the Premier Hits album was made album of the week by Ireland's most popular radio station 2FM a few weeks ago.More info about that soon.I love this digest,it's so cool.Take care, Stephen ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
