Gary Numan Digest Thu, 2 May 96 Volume 1 : Issue 223 Today's Topics: ADMINISTRIVIA FANLINE Gary Numan Digest V1 #222 Good Evening, my friends. Hello LaserDisc/Birmingham Town Hall NuWORLD CD deletions ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 May 1996 22:44:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Derek Langsford Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Can we please put an end to the acerbic posts that continue to pollute the Digest. The Digest is dissolving into exactly what I would hope all of us do not want it to be. I am at a loss as to why these things are escalating. It's as if one bad turn deserves another. That's not the proverb I learned as a kid. The Digest, the subscribers, the web pages are all here because of our mutual respect and admiration for Gary Numan and his music. I fail to see why someone would get so upset about posts of experiences with or regarding Gary that they feel the need to post insulting articles about the person. Can we please return to civility? Treat others in the same way you would expect to be treated. Even for the non-religious (that includes me BTW) I would hope everyone sees the merit of this principle. Would some of you say the things you have posted to someone's face? I doubt it, unless you were willing to receive a punch on the nose. The internet shields us from such physical violence but the result is often an escalation in verbal insults. And in my experience, most of these altercations start from simple misunderstandings that if clarified early on, would have defused the problems in an instant. I have withheld all personal posts from the forthcoming Digest that do not meet the Digest's subject matter requirements as set out in the welcome message all subscribers receive upon subscribing. And before anyone cries "censorship" I think you'll find that only applies when a government is limiting expression. Myself and Dave are the producers of this Digest and we can do anything we like with it within the law. To remind you: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHARTER FOR NUMANEWS - The Gary Numan Digest -------------------------------------------- This list is for the purpose of the acquisition and dissemination of information about Gary Numan. Suitable material should have some connection with Gary or his music. This includes info on new releases, concerts, reviews, sightings of Numan collectibles, sale of or requests for Numan items, reports of radio play, interviews, discussion of available releases, critiques of past releases, Numan trivia, other Numan Fan organisations/publications, musical influences, musical influencees, artists with some connection to Gary Numan (collaborators, others on his NUMA label, past backing band members etc): basically anything that can be seen to have relevance to the group. Discussion of other 80's synth artists should be left for other mailing lists/newsgroups if no relation to Gary is an integral part of the contribution. Personal email, subjects off topic and flames of other subscribers are not appropriate and will be viewed with disdain by other subscribers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do we want the Digest to be moderated again? I don't and think we would have a difficult time finding someone we could agree on to do the job. I certainly don't have the time. Now, some things are still unresolved. I would like to make some comments and suggestions to try and bring this all to a close or at least keep it out of the Digest. To Alexander Deacon: Please disist from ridiculing others on the Digest. Your second attack, thinly veiled as humour, was completely transparent. If you can't post anything constructive, don't bother. ---- To John Marques Carramao: I feel you have misunderstood Joey's intention with his idea for a reflector mailing list. It is not an elitist "club" but an attempt to help coordinate the web site authors so that information given is consistant and up to date e.g. URL changes. This would be to make the Numan Network a cohesive unit that can be relied upon by netsurfers to be as useful as possible. Such subject matter might not be appropriate for the Digest. It will be a better network if there is communication and full agreement among sites. Even if you do have differences with Joey on other issues, I don't think you should be discussing them on the Numan Digest. Please take Joey's olive branch and sort out your differences in email. ---- To James Heyser: Your post was an ingenuous (*not* ingenious btw) attempt to ridicule Joey in public for his idea. Obviously you are sympathizing with John. I hope you were not put up to this and that you now regret it. ---- To Joey Lindstrom: I do not know all the particulars of the interactions you have had with John but clearly he is upset at something. I hope you can resolve it in email. I will give you the opportunty to rebutt the statements made in the last Digest but that is as far as I want to see any public discourse upon these personal matters. I would advise though that you not post overly long articles in the future. ---- Now, as that inappropriate spokesman for civility, Rodney King, said, "can we all just get along". PLEASE. And if not, keep your disagreements out of the Digest. It spoils it for the rest of us. Any comments should be sent to me via email. Trying hard not to take sides. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Well hello, It seems to be 'de rigeur' (pretentious ? Moi?) to say "Hi!" and introduce yourself to the massed fans here, and being a newcomer.....well......"Hello".... :-) My name is Will and I'm a Numan Fan......jeez this is beginning to sound like an "AA" meeting! I've just rediscovered our Gary after a break of many years, I first heard "Thats Too Bad" shortly after its release at a freinds house, buying subsequent releases as and when issued.....around the time of "Warriors" I started working for a local radio station and became involved with the local/alternative programme which gave me a fabulous excuse to Interview Gary a number of times.......for "Warriors", "Beserker" and "The Fury"....... I found him to be extremely frank, startlingly honest and a first rate diamond geezer...... Unfortunately, I thought that "Beserker" and "The Fury" were both (barring a couple of outstanding tracks on each album) fairly poor (DON'T HIT ME!!!!!! I'M SORRY!) Personal taste and all that.... Shortly afterwards, Gary's stuff became a touch difficult to find and I kind of drifted away........sigh! However, I find myself back in the fold after MANY years and very pleased to be here....having just heard "Machine And Soul" I'm absolutely KICKING myself for not being around when this came out......were the live shows good ? I saw every tour up to and including the beserker tour and with the exception of Larry Loeber ( who had been deported, I beleive) managed to interview all of the Numa acts.......some of whom were extraordinarily unpleasant ( echoed by Gary in the Record Collector interview as I recall). I enjoy all sortsof other stuff from ambient stuff (Future Sound of London, Orbital, Banco de Gaia) to guitary pop stuff (Live, Weezer) Rock (Nirvana, Led Zep) lots of '60s Garage stuff(13th Floor elevators, electric Prunes, etc) seventies and eighties pop (too many!) and was highly ....ahem "visible" during the whole "New Romantic/Futurist debacle of the early '80s...... I no longer work for the radio and since leaving there have managed and played in a variety of semi successful bands and am currently employed as a lyricist for a somewhat disreputable publishing house....and trying desperatly to get out of the "contract". So.....thats by way of introduction....... All the best to you..... Love Will.....x Todays Song Of The Day Is........ Open Up Your Heart And Let The Sun Shine In - Frente. I used to see him at airshows, then I came to Leicester and met a big Gary fan. For a year I wandered around singing Cars. Then 1st April 1996 I got to see the man at Nottingham Rock City - it was brilliant! Since then I've been making up for lost time. My favourite tune is "Absolution" - it's so intense. Erm apart from that I love football and most other music. Especially at the moment Goldie, David Bowie's latest outing "Outside" and groups like RHCP, Pearl Jam, Nirvana etc etc. As long as it moves me in some way I like it! Cheers for now Karen ------------------------------ Date: 29 Apr 96 15:41:45 EDT From: Brian Moloney <100572.31@CompuServe.COM> Subject: LaserDisc/Birmingham Town Hall To: "INTERNET:numan@cs.uwp.edu" Does anyone know where I can get hold of the Phillips Micro Music Laser Disc? I saw it for sale in Tower Records in the mid 80's, is it in anyones collection? Please E-Mail me. Was anyone else at the Birmingham Town Hall Premier - I enjoyed the show, music was good, but couldn't make out a word! Some guy to my left shouted "Pardon!" when Gary spoke! It was a pity, because my wife came along for the first time since the Fury Tour and was not over impressed. I may have to wait another 11 years before she'll try again ; -) Regards Brian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 May 1996 11:30:55 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: NuWORLD CD deletions To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I noticed that the UK GNFC have run out of copies of "Babylon 3" and the original "Machine and Soul" album CDs. Whether they get repressed will depend on demand. I don't know if "Machine and Soul" will still be available via stores via Pinnacle but I would suggest if you don't have this on CD, and want it, you get it sooner rather than later.
