My tastes in music are limited to late 70's to current synth-pop (Erasure, Kraftwerk, Marc Almond, etc.), although I do listen to the occassional Sex Pistols or Beethoven record every now and then. I've been into Numan for about 2 years now after constantly reading his name in the press (in both good and bad ways) and decided to buy the "Pleasure Principle/Warriors" double cd in the search of something exciting in this current age of predictable, dull music. Since then I've become a big fan. I also program keyboards and plan on being a pop star within 2 years. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 May 1996 09:15:30 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: M&S: PDO replaces bronzed CD, and sound To: numan@cs.uwp.edu A few issues ago, the subject of bronzing PDO UK CDs from 1992 came up in the Digest. It was noted that "Isolate", "Ghost" and "Machine and Soul" were affected. While the first two were replaced promptly, I stated that I was still waiting for my M&S after over 6 months of waiting. Well, my mentioning it did the trick and the replacement copy came in the mail late last week. The new pressing is in the new PDO UK style, i.e. the disc is silver not pale gold on the label side. Someone, disputed my assertion that there was distortion on M&S. What I specifically was referring to was the female vocals on 'Generator', the "Hey, heh hey, hey, heh hey" at the beginning. Unless that was an intentional effect ("we generate heat" - perhaps from the grating effect on our eardrums :-) it sound horribly distorted to me. I agree there is nothing egregiously wrong with the sound on this album, apart from those vocals. All I can figure is that the vocals may not be as clear as they could be. Aside from the "tempted out of retirement" remark, a fairly positive mention in a magazine that receives wide distribution. Three cheers to Tower! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 May 1996 22:45:48 -0600 From: paddygav@magic1.org (Paddy) Subject: Reference in "People" magazine, of all places To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) Oh yeah, I found a searing review of "I, Assassin" in an old People ragazine when in high school, and in fact I just recently found it and taped it inside my band's workbook. I always carried it around with me in my school calendar book, both because of the picture (it was a live shot from the Teletour) and to remind me that critics very often know shit (and nothing else). Now I look at it and realize that even if some one thinks my music sucks, it ain't really so. Oh what the hay, here's a transcript of that great review from '82. . . It's a little like a musical version of a Kafka novel-only this album is by a pretentious British rocker who doesn't have the chops to spin a truly menacing, paranoid fantasy. Numan, 24, mostly cribs from the robotish musical affectations of David Bowie during his "Thin White Duke" phase in the mid-'70's. Numan's whiny voice sounds as if it's been fed through a tinny jack-in-the-box speaker, and while his chilly synthesizer arrangements might warm C-3PO's heart, they aren't likely to do much for humanoids. Numan's lyrics are worse. the title cut opens with "Weare assasssins/Weare not evil/we act with reason and heart/your heart" and ends with". . . just read the papers/ that's realisim." Gee. Numan might better spin out his sophomoric imagining of schizophrenia in private. I don't remember exactly what issue this was in, but I seem to think that Lennon might have been on the cover, and it was most assuredly in '82. In typing this just now (any mistakes are due to a "C" typing, not a "B" in English), it came to me that this was when Gary was not particularly hot here in the states, and People probably needed someone safe to pick on. It comes off as a rather inane review, but unfortunately the reviewers name is not listed. Perhaps if Gary could have tried to sound more like Journey or Def Leppard. . . Paddy There is truth, lies, and that which is not mentionable. We either get all, or nothing. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 1996 9:48:21 +0100 (BST) From: Jon Garland Subject: Whisper of Truth fanzine To: numan@cs.uwp.edu UK-based Digest subscribers may like to know that there is a new Gary Numan fanzine now available!
