Gary Numan Digest Sun, 23 Jun 96 Volume 1 : Issue 238 Today's Topics: First Post, Already a request! Just wondering? SOund-On-Sound teletour or touring principle Vinyl List ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 16:58:59 -0400 (EDT) From: Joseph DeAngelis Subject: First Post, Already a request! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hey Numan buds This is my first post, and let me first hello to all you Numan fans and also a big Thank You to Derek Langford for including me in this newsgroup. Now, for administrative stuff, there seems to be some info I need to supply, so here it goes... >> please let us know who you are. How long you have listened to Gary Numan OK this is an easy one, my name is Joseph DeAngelis, I am 29 and live in Boston, MA. I have been a fan of Gary Numan since I was 12ish, when Cars came out in 1979, God I can't believe it was that long ago. My first Numan album was "THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE" my Mom got it for me as a B-day gift... you guys had to see the expression on her face when she bought it ... it was classic since not many looked like Gary at that time.... Soon after I picked up "REPLICAS" and the flood gates, as they say, were opened. I still to this day think those 2 records are some of the best music you will find anywhere. I then got "TELEKON" in 1980, loved it .. still do. Then picked up his first album which was re-released, thought it rocked .. still do. And then then "BIG FALL" happened... I got Dance, God I hate that record. Then I got I'Assasin ... hate that one too .. then did not hear from him until about 7 years ago. I picked up "NEW ANGER" - an OK disk .. then "WARRIORS" - hate that one too.. "MACHINE&SOUL" returned that but I think I made a mistake on that one .."OUTLAND" - yeah I might like this effort!! But then "THE RESURGENCE" began .. picked up Sacrifice .. awesome, my Numan was finally back .."DREAM CORROSION" - Wow! The old songs are on it and boy .. these MACHINE&SOUL songs actually do rock .. How does the song NOISE NOISE become a B-side .. its the best song he did after Telekon in my opinion, and then "THE PLAN", wow - this rocks big time, and then "Dark Light"- Wow ... can't get better than this; I hope Exile does though. Recently picked up "BESERKER" - returned it, absolutely disliked it except the title song, sort of rocked a little.... Anyway, I don't have "THE FURY" or "STRANGE CHARM" but hope to hear them at least soon. Oh "HUMAN" is OK but very fustrating ... and "THE SKIN MECHANIC" is cool .. the stuff from "THE FURY" sounds great! >> who some of your favorite artists are Well - as you can probably tell, I don't put Gary on a pedestal to the point that everything he does is deamed Perfect ... but he is one of my favorite musicians. My favorite, however, is the Canadian rock group RUSH!!! But in general, I like alot of different types of music, from classical to new age, can't stand Rap though... >> Let us know if you play any instruments I have a minor in Music Theory from Northeastern University .. so that means I can play some keyboards .. can play almost everything by Numan, most of his music is pretty basic, though interesting. But my primary instrument is a Bass, I've played it for about 9 years .. though havn't touched the thing in about 4 months. Got into the bass from the influence of Geddy Lee of RUSH, absolutely love it. I sometimes play some Numan songs on it, I like the bass lines that Paul Gardiner did in his early days.. Can't stand that "white funk" bass from I'Assasin and Warriors... ------- Request part ------- O.K. now that that's over with .. I can get to my question or request. I am seeking to obtain two early Numan videos .. "THE TOURING PRINCIPLE" and "MICROMUSIC". DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE A COPY Of THESE .. if so please feel free to contact me and maybe we can work something out. Thanks in advance to everyone on this list who replys. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In #237 Chris asked: >1. I recently purchased "Premeir Hit's". After listening to "We take >mystery (to bed)", I noticed a familliar bass style. Since I do not own >"I, Assassin" and knowing that Numan played with Mick Karn at one time, is >it on this album that he played? It was Pino Palladino on "I, Assassin". Gary's experience with Mick Karn was not a good one and Gary would have nothing to do with him after he did the "Dance" songs. Pino is a very talented bass player. >2. Thanks to the digest, a member was kind enough to sell me his CD copy >of "Automatic". Now I know it's not cared for by many of you, but maybe >someone can answer this question: Who played bass on the song "Change Your >Mind"? I had always thought it was a synth bass line, but recently I >bought a Razormade collection (Vinyl) with a mix of "CYM" on it. In the >liner notes of the collection, it asked people to stop bothering for the >bass samples, that it was a real bass player on "CYM". The liner notes for >"Automatic" has no mention of who plays bass on "CYM". If anyone knows >will you please enlighten me. Glad you got a copy. It's pretty rare these days. Unfortunately I cannot answer this question so maybe a direct one to Gary would be more helpful, if no one else chimes in. >3. In a back issue of GND it mentioned that "Berserker" was being >re-released. Is it already out? I've been looking for it here in Osaka, >but have been unlucky. I've seen Asylum 1 & 2, Exhibition...etc. on CD but >no Berserker. "Berserker" was issued on CD in December 1995 in the UK only. It would be an import to Japan. The CDs you mentined above all had a Japanese release. >4. Are there any Numan video collections? I've only seen the video's for >"Cars" and "Down In The Park", the latter off "Urgh! A Music War". I'd >like to see the video's for "Change Your Mind", "Are Friends Electric", >"Love Need's No Disguise"...etc. If a video collection does exist, is it >still available? What is it called? There are two video collections: Newman Numan Was deleted years ago but covers his Beggars Banquet days from "Cars" to "Music For Chameleons". Getting a dub is the best you could do now. I don't have it yet myself. Shadow Man Still available and now on NTSC from NuWORLD, Gary's Webb page (http://www.numan.co.uk) Covers "Warriors" through "Machine and Soul", his last video. The "Berserker" CD is also availble via NuWORLD. No studio video was made of AFE (came before commercial videos) and I don't think there is one for "Love Needs No Disguise". I am sure there must be one for CYM but it is not part of any Numan collection. Hope that helps, Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Hughes) Subject: SOund-On-Sound To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi, Just to let you know that this months (July) issue of Sound-On-Sound, a British music technology magazine, features a fairly lengthy interview with Mr Numan. In general, the interview is friendly and positive although it does give the impression that it was made several months ago. Gary talks about his early success, Rock City studios, the Outland studio and 'Sacrifice'. 'Exile' gets a mention too. There are some nice pictures of Gary in his studio which should appeal to the gear-freaks (me too!) although why Gary is using a Gem S2 and an Alesis Quadrasynth is beyond me. In total, the interview runs to roughly six pages and, although the interview is fundementally about the technical side of music, it is worth looking up. Copies of the magazine are available from : Sound-On-Sound Media House Burrel Road St. Ives Cambridgeshire PE17 4LE Tel : 01480 461244 Fax : 01480 492422 You can also reach SOS on Compuserve on 100517,1113. The magazine cost roughly 3 pounds 25 pence (Uk money) and I think SOS do a reprint service. David J. I know I have a copy of these somewhere, but have been unable to locate them for awhile now...until I do find them, would anyone have a copy of either to trade or tape for postage and a blank? If and when I find my copies, I would certainly be happy to spin for anyone interested....pls email me personally if you have a copy.... thanks a million....dan c "time heals nothing,..it merely rearranges our memory" -zero bars (1978) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jun 1996 14:25:33 +0000 From: Phil Marsh Subject: Vinyl List To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Yeah yeah, boring old topic, I know... A couple of weeks ago, I notified the Digest that I was flogging my old Numan vinyl cheap. Thanks to those who responded. Even more thanks to those who bought! Much stuff still left, however. Anyway, if any of you in the USA would be interested, I am now able to accept US dollars in payment as long as it is paper stuff that is mailed over, not cheques. Reason being, I'm off on a cruise next year which uses US dollars as currency. So if anyone saw my initial post and was put off by the expense of converting to sterling please contact me again. Or if anyone didn't see my original post (wherever you are), contact me and I'll send you a list! Thanks for your time...now back to your regular program...
