Can someone explain the Berserker CD history. I know one was available through the fan club and that there was a new issue,etc....The reason I ask is I just bought it and mine says copyright 1991 on the back and the versions are extended...which do I have? Also, the sound is pretty poor. There are only 2 Numan albums I never liked...Berserker and Machine and Soul but I felt I had to get it to keep the collection complete. Ive been collecting him since 1980 so have pretty much everything. I was pleasantly surprised when I played to actually like it!! This is the first time Ive heard it in ages so I guess tastes can change! He's about to get out of the CD business. He would like to get $25 for it, p&p in the US would be $1.50. So $26.50 and it can be yours. Add another $2 for overseas p&p. Email me if interested. First, the sound is definitely sharper than on the CDs, even on this dub. It really is a shame about the CDs. I hope Gary has learned a lesson with this case. Second, it appears to me that the sound is dissociated from the picture. It isn't mismatched timewise, it just seems like we are not hearing the sound that was heard at the concert. I suspect that is because we are hearing the sound as it came through the sound board and after being 'doctored' rather than via placed microphones. I can't help but think that all the sound was dubbed after while the performers watched themselves on film to synch it all. I know this wasn't the case but that's the impression I get. It's an eerie experience. Last, Gary's hairline was rather severe. I much prefer his new tousled look :-) Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Is there any one else that feels the same way? If there is perhaps we can pursuade him to do it, once, to see the reponse. Minimum bid is $15 to cover my expenses. First message in my mailbox breaks an equal-bid tie. If you're not in the U.S. be prepared to pay the extra postage costs. The disk is used but has only a few minor scratches - nothing that should affect playback. The edge of the insert is a bit crunched where it got caught on the tabs that hold it in (I hate it when people do that). My impression may be different than that of many others, mainly because I am so well informed on news and details with all my internet contacts. So while there was little that was new for me in the fanzine, I thought it was still very well done. The size is easier to handle than most (it's approximately a 9" x 5" booklet) and the presentation is superior to any other Numan fanzine I have seen although I have not seen Asylum which I understand has colour pictures in addition. The layout and detail is excellent (page numbers with Numa logo, fanzine name across the top of each page, good quality printing). I really like the fact they used a heavier, glossier paper for the cover. Gives it more substance than the stapled photocopied sheet approach. The articles are generally well written and informative. It also strikes a good balance being both enthusiastic and realistic. I am not a fan of pandering sycophantic fanzines. Andy McHaffie's song writing guide was funny (especially the dice roll phrase generator). I've spent enough time on Numan contests recently so I'll pass on this one's, though I would say it's a good one, especially the tie-breaker. So, overall, I think it would be a very good source of info, nicely presented for a fan, espcially one not on the Internet. That is where I feel the main market market will be. Many of the contributors are Digest subscribers (Jon G., Matthew T., Andy M., Colin E., Sean F., Markus D.) and so the news and opinions may not necessarily be new for those receiving the Digest. If I ever got the time, I would consider submitting something to it myself - "Gary in America" or "A US perspective on Gary". I'd recommend it for the Numan Fanzine collector and fans not on-line. I couldn't make out what the words to the chorus were, but from >the other names mentioned, I don't think it was meant to be a flattering >mention. HELLO DONALD. I figured it was time to speak up 'cos you've just mentioned my number 2. Tom Ellard / Severed Heads. I can personally voutch for Tom by saying it wasn't Severed Heads who mentioned Gary in a negative light. Tom was a big fan. I spoke to him on the phone only last week (which cost me $100us) when Gary was brought up. He was shocked to find Gary still makes at least half a million pounds on his back catalogue alone, yearly. Tom stopped listening to Gary after Telekon only because Gary made less emphasis on the synth and more on funk. But he's always respected him. Time to brag: I, , am currentley under orders from Severed Heads himself (being Tom T. Ellard) to remix a track off his last LP entitled ANIMal. {this is only because I forced him} ;-) This was acheived due to him digging a CD and DAT of my material that I sent him. :-) Tom runs and makes a regular contribution to the Severed Heads newsgroup. He has no qualms about giving his email# out to fans. Gary has my heart...Tom has my mind. This album has copped a bit of a lashing in times >past from people who DON'T like it, but they were nowhere to be seen when we >were discussing it! I don't love it or hate it. It's just there. This is a D-50 album. It's dated beyond words. This is one of my major problems with Gary. He's just not 'technically' clever anymore. He'll take a preset synth and milk it dry. Gary uses the synth like a guitar. This is not meant to take away from his skills as a songwriter. In that department he's a genius. I just wish he'd use today's gear as he did yesterday's. Overall the album (MR) has it's moment's. Only in MY book, it was the beginning of a nasty period. > - I don't NORMALLY like the ballads too much, but... I would never admit something like that. > "Devious" has had a few little un-Numan-like flourishes added to it. >Doesn't really make much >difference (except to reduce it's authentic-ness). What was that Prince song?... Take Me With U? (doo doo doo doo...doo...doo.) On "I Don't Believe": >And what wins the battle on your emotions >-the negative lyrics, or the uplifting music? Both. The way in which he confidently yells at you that he's right, he means what he is saying, and the power of the melody. > Overall, this reviewer gives METAL RHYTHM "10 out of 10 Mr. Numan"!
