To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Seeing a jpeg of the cover of the new Gary Numan "The Story So Far" boxed set on Paul Denman's Numan Complex web site I was struck by how inappropriate the title is. Story so far? It's not even half of it. Perhaps "The Forgotten Years" would have been better. To be accurate something like "A selection of the material that we were able to get rights to from Numan's own label but not his other record companies who have rights to his most famous stuff" woul dahve been better but it would have been a bit cumbersome :-) At least the cover picture is better than the other Receiver Numan releases. I'm still not going to buy it though. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu Dept. of Biology Tel. I know one was available >through the fan club and that there was a new issue,etc....The reason I ask >is I just bought it and mine says copyright 1991 on the back and the versions >are extended...which do I have? All the CDs have p 1991 on them. Somewhat misleading when the album was first released in 1984. I posted this back in May 9. >The first time "Berserker" was on CD, it was a limited edition UK Fan Club >release (not available to the general public). It contained the extended >versions of the songs as originally released on the cassette back in 1984 >when the album was first released. The back cover had the artwork from the >back of the original 12" album. A new picture appeared as the back of the >"booklet" a facial shot of Gary looking down. >The 1995 reissue was a general release (not Fan Club only) and contained >the same versions of the songs as on the first Fan Club only CD. The original was a full >length shot of Gary turned more to the side than in the 1995 release photo. >The other pictures are the same as the 1991 CD. Apart from that, the only >other differences are the lyrics and writing on the disc are in black on >the 1995 release and the insert is flimsier. >The vinyl mixes of the "Berserker" album (6 of the 9 songs were extended >for the cassette and subsequent CDs) have not been on CD yet. >I hope that makes it clear for you. The FAQ also explains the history Also, the sound is pretty poor. I find it leass than enthralling. The "Babylon" version of the "Berserker" tracks are a lot sharper though missing some of the bottom end. A competent remaster could make this album sound spectacular I am sure. >There are only 2 Numan albums I never liked...Berserker and Machine and >Soul >but I felt I had to get it to keep the collection complete. It's one of my faves. ---- Wayne Knisley asked: >Subject: Instrumental CD compilations >For the simple fact that Gary's musical arrangement abilities are >phenomenal, I would like to see him release a Comp CD of complete songs, >not blurps and in 'HUMAN'. Is there any one else that feels the same >way? If there is perhaps we can pursuade him to do it, once, to see the >reponse. Wayne, CA, USA I agree. Some of the excerpts on Human could have made superb full length instrumental tracks or even songs with lyrics. Even the piece that became "Soul Protection" sound great without so much percuission and the wailing female backing vox. As I have said, before, there is a good album somewhere in the "Outland" tapes, it just got buried in too much clutter and production. I'll put your question to Gary in this months "The Digest Asks Gary". Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. I'm 33 and I discovered GN in '79 when I heard "Are 'friends' electric?" on Radio Luxemburg. As I live in Sweden and the transmission was really bad I didn't hear the name of the artist but I knew I had to get that record. A couple of weeks later a friend played "Replicas" for me and on that album it was! I bought the album and put it into my collection and discovered that I already had the first album! I had bought it six months later but forgot about it so I didn't listen to it until I bought "Replicas". The reason I bought the first album in the first place was that I ordered almost everything on the Beggars Banquet label because I was a big fan of The Lurkers (I was a punk at the time) which were on the same label. I also had the "Vortex" punk album but didn't know until later that Gazza were on it. After these two Tubeway Army albums I bought everything previously released by TA and slowly converted from a punk to a Numanoid. All time favourite albums are: The Pleasure Principle, Replicas and Dance (in that order). I've seen GN live twice ("Warriors" tour, Oct 13th & 15th at Hammersmith Odeon, London) and have a tape from the concert (15th). This was a great experience that I had been looking forward to for quite a while. Tik & Tok was supporting. I liked Ultravox at the time I discovered TA/GN but after John Foxx left and they came out with Vienna I followed John Foxx who was more electronic and more to my liking. I still think his first album "Metamatic" is one of the best albums ever made, all categories. My favourite artists at the moment are: Higher Intelligence Agency, LFO, The Orb, Black Dog, Global Communication (incl Link), Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood (and other easy-listening stuff), Autechre, B12 plus loads more in that style. I also make my own music (instrumental; ambient, electronic listening-music) with the help of an old Atari and all my old synths that I've collected and saved since 1980. Some of them cost more now than when they first came out but I won't sell anything. It's now 00.28 on this side of the pond so I have to kip for a few hours but I'll be back with more questions and/or info later. Robert Bush Ps. How many people are on the list? This is in response to the nice letter of introduction that I received. My name is Anathema. I am a 24 y/o biology student @ Southwest Texas State U. I have been listening to Gary Numan's music since 1982. My other musical interests include Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, The Pogues and the Housemartins. I don't play any instruments as I am fairly tone deaf. I tried for years but to no avail. I have a question. I used to own two 4 cd sets of Gary Numan's music. These were Japanese imports that I purchased @ Tower Records. I have been told that there are actually 4 of these sets. I am wondering if anyone can tell me the name and catalog #s and /or where I can order them. They were my prized possession before my cd collection was stolen. Thanks, Anathema ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Jul 1996 16:34:46 +1000 From: Ashley Fletcher Subject: Not Severed Heads! To: Numan Digest Hi all To clear it up the reference to Gary Numan by an Australian band, it is TISM - This is Serious Mum (not Severed Heads). The song is called "Jung Talent Time". A tongue in cheek look at fleeting stars (also mentions A Flock of Seagulls, Mike Oldfield and so on) - saying Andy Wahol's 15 minutes was too long. I have the album and it has songs like "All homeboys are Dickheads" and "(He'll never be an) Ol' Man River" (About River Phoenix) - so you can see how serious they are. I've received four bids and no flames so I guess the auction concept didn't offend anyone. To repeat: I hope this sounds fair: I found a copy of Sharpe & Numan's Automatic cd last weekend and have decided to sell it in a sealed bid auction. Minimum bid is $15 to cover my expenses. First message in my mailbox breaks an equal-bid tie. If you're not in the U.S. be prepared to pay the extra postage costs. The disk is used but has only a few minor scratches - nothing that should affect playback. The edge of the insert is a bit crunched where it got caught on the tabs that hold it in (I hate it when people do that). I absolutely *love* Replicas. There is not a song that I dislike. I guess that's all I really have to say, certainly can't make any complaints! :) And, to sneak in my thoughts on MR/NA, NA was the next tape I bought after Replicas. A year previously, I had copied Warriors, Living Ornaments, and White Noise, so when I popped in NA I was prepared for a little difference in sound--but I didn't expect wailing female vox and fret wanking! 6 yrs later I picked up MR, but never really gave it a listen as I picked up Outland at the same time (urk). I have to admit, however, that I do like NA quite a bit. The remixes have more of an in-your-face American style, I think, and they are the one's I add to tapes when I'm trying to convert ppl.
