Gary Numan Digest Thu, 25 Jul 96 Volume 1 : Issue 247 Today's Topics: Answer to Anathema's Q Back from London Discography corrections + more More sad news for Gary Numan on Mtv ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jul 1996 14:55:06 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Answer to Anathema's Q To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In #246 Anathema asked: >I have a question. I used to own two 4 cd sets of Gary Numan's music. >These were Japanese imports that I purchased @ Tower Records. I have been >told that there are actually 4 of these sets. I am wondering if anyone can >tell me the name and catalog #s and /or where I can order them. They were >my prized possession before my cd collection was stolen. These were the much beloved Asylum volumes 1 and 2. Each contained 4 CDs covering "The Plan" through "Warriors" with the CDs packed with bonus tracks and having beautful booklets. I have them myself. I'm really sorry your collection was stolen, it's a personal nightmare for me as my collection is most prized and would take a huge effort to replace. Sad truth is that these sets have been deleted for some time now (at least two years) and are impossible to order. I think the catalogue numbers were ALFA ALCB 5/9 and ALCB 10/13. You'd have to rely on a store having them gathering dust on shelves or finding it used. Alternatively, the UK Beggars Banquet 2 CD reissues have all the same tracks bar 2 exceptions. They go for around $25 each and are still available. The CD pairings are odd (TPP/Warriors, Telekon/I, Assassin, Dance/Tubeway Army, The Plan/Replicas) so you have to buy all 4 sets to get the better albums (good marketing by BB but not so good for fans). Still it's a way for you to get (virtually) all the music that was on the Asylum sets. There were 3 Asylum volumes. Volume 3 was a single CD of Living Ornaments 80 + a few tracks from Living Ornaments 79 all put togther to sound like one concert. A volume 4 was rumoured (supposedly to include Berserker, The Fury and Strange Charm) but it never appeared. I'm back now and although it was uneventful Numan wise, I did have a great time. As we spoke of earlier, give me a call to get together as I have not called you because I'm not sure of your work schedule and I do not want to bother you at work. If you can't find my number, E-mail me off the site and I will give it to you then. cheers wayne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jul 1996 20:55:23 +0200 (MET DST) From: bush@shbf.se (Robert Bush) Subject: Discography corrections + more To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) Hi all, I downloaded the discography file and went through it. Here are some corrections/additions: All singles have BEGA in the list but in real life it's just BEG. Down In The Park 7" has number BEG 17 and not BEGA 17, Complex, 12" has number BEG 29T and not BEGA 29T for instance. BEGA is reserved for albums. The B-side of "My Dying Machine" is called "Here Am I" not "Here I Am". I have a couple of 7" versions of "Cars" and one of them is not listed in the discography: A: Cars, time 3:57 B: Metal, 3:31. Released 1979 on ATCO with catalogue number 7211. I also have a remix of "My Dying Machine" on 12" from 1985. The A-side is 6:25 and so is the B-side but it's instrumental. Both tracks are remixed by Massimo Carpani at Rimini Studio, Italy. The upper left corner of the sleeve says "Remix". Catalogue number is ZIG 20007 which is the same as the 7" IT ZIG 20007 free with NUMA compilation LP from 1984. My version of Numan/Tubeway Army 1978/1979 Volume Two (BEG 123E) is on red vinyl and my Numan/Tubeway Army 1978/1979 Volume Three (BEG 124E) is on blue vinyl. I also noted that someone thought "I Dream of Wires" to be the only cover of a Numan song. Well, I've heard at least two more: Are 'friends' electric? I saw on MTV some months ago (I think it was with Chemical Brothers but I'm not sure) and A Child With The Ghost is covered by Tik & Tok (support band on Warriors tour) on their brilliant album "Intolerance". Gary plays synths on that song and on one more and there are more GN band members playing on the album as well (Joe Hubbard, Tessa Niles, RRussel Bell etc.). Hoof Proudfoot (not sure of spelling) who taught Gary all his flying skills was killed two weekends ago in a flying accident at Duxford in England. Hoof was Gary's absolute hero. It's even been on the news that "Pop star Gary Numan is devastated by the news". Thanks to Matthew Holbrook for the info. This clearly must be a tough time for Gary. Let's hope that Gary's grief heals fast. It must make his work even more difficult. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H.
