I offered for sale recently a video tape titled "Newman Numan" on this newsletter. As far as I knew, this item was virtually one of-a-kind, never having seen it before or after. And as such, I was more than confident that the video would sell for substantially more than retail if presented within an auction environment. I must emphatically state that at no time was it my intention to rip anyone off, but rather to receive due compensation for an item long unavailable to the public. That's all. I challenge these individuals who feel that I was trying to rip-off collectors to provide EACH ONE OF THEM with a copy of the video at cost to right this horrid wrong. This is the only way that you can possible place yourself in any position of authority: by providing that which you cannot find at a price you cannot afford. Otherwise, you need to sit like the complacent do-gooders you are on the periphery of dealings beyond you understanding or economic grasp. Essentially, you need to either right the wrong or remain silent. Sincerly, karl. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Aug 1996 09:24:58 +0100 From: Paul Denman Subject: Hussey/Numan To: numan@cs.uwp.edu The Hussey/Numan thing has been put on hold as Wayne has indeed gone over to America. Not too sure about him moving there permanently, as he still owns at least one house in the UK. The project has been put on hold due to 1) Wayne being in America, and 2) Gary being a teensy bit(!) overworked at the moment. I for one am definately looking forward to the project as Gary has always been my favourite singer, and I have seen the Mission 67 times. The Mission were officially disbanded a couple of weeks ago, when after releasing an excellent new album ("Blue"), they played three relatively low-key gigs through the UK (Leeds, Nottingham and London) and one abroad somewhere (can't remember where) before calling it a day. The decision was announced at Nottingham which is where Gary went to see them. He went backstage & was talking to Wayne when a local Radio interviewer suggested they should work together; which they both thought was a good idea. The Mission have been struggling since Wayne's decision to 'go dance' didn't prove totally popular with the fans. It seemed as though after Simon & Craig leaving, he didn't know which direction to take the band; I personally think he should have dropped the band name & gone solo a long time ago. (Sorry to uninterested Numan fans to harp on about The Mish there) The Hussey/Numan project will prove to be very interesting; Wayne's religious upbringing clashing with Gary's personal beliefs could provide some good 'war-like' lyrics! Wayne's swirling, tinkly (cant think of another word) guitars layering over the refound doom-bass synths.... :-) My only question is; who will do the singing??? If this has wetted anyone's appetite, I'm doing a feature on The Mission on the Complex web site. Before I go, could I take this opportunity to ask Numan digest readers if anyone has any live tapes they wouldn't mind trading; it's one area of my collection I would like to build up. Cheers, Paul Denman The Complex Web Site can be found at -> http://web.ukonline.co.uk/Members/complex.d2/contents.htm -> Please visit today, and sign the guest book. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Aug 1996 18:57:56 +0100 From: Jon Bunting Subject: M.E. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi, I am 32 and live in Norfolk. I have been a "Fan" of Numan ever since seeing "Are freinds Electric?" on top of the pops. I play guitar, and own a KORGX3 which I bang out average dance music. Other bands I like are : Fluke, Felix, Denim, Lionrock, Jam&Spoon, Leftfield, New Order and the Grid. I have recently put my WWW page live, Tubeway Army live at the Roxy. (http://www.netxtra.co.uk/jab/gn.htm). I have a few Ideas and I am planning a revamp. I am trying to keep the coverage light and original (very difficult considering the extensive coverage). Jon Bunting. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi...I have been a digest subscriber for a couple years now, but a Numan fan for about 17 yrs..and I almost never have a complaint about the bandwidth of this digest... but i must blow the whistle on the gentleman selling this video for $100....i have a copy and yes, it is discontinued...but certainly not rare enough to be charging such this sum of money.... people selling things is OK (while i personally would record most tapes for people just to get numans music out, and not for personal profit)...but unloading Numan merchandise at the insulting expense of another Numan fan is not very cool...at least in the 5 or so other digests I am in....lets help each other out here folks.... I don't mean to be insulting, I am sure the video is quite good quality...but $100??? not me. agree? disagree? I've been a Numan fan since 1980 actually. I first heard Gary's music from The Pleasure Principle and I hated it. I hadn't even heard 'Cars' yet. I bought his Telekon album for some reason and happen to love it. It was a dreary day, raining, black cloud and what not. Needless to say, I've been a fan ever since. I also enjoy listening to Celebrate the Nun, Berlin, Alphaville and Red Flag. I have a few more but they don't rate. I am not musically inclined, both vocally and physically. I hope to make many new friends that I can share ideas and thoughts with regarding Gary. Thanks to all who have made surfing the net a joy for me to catch up on items for Gary. Looking forward to meeting some of you some day and, yes Derek, one day we'll make the drive and finally meet. Was there ever a release with the catalgoue number of NUMA 1006? NUMA 1005 was "Strange Charm", NUMA 1007 was "Ghost". If no one can asnwer I'll ask Gary next month. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Well, here I am again to add my 2 cents worth. "The man who only posts 13 times per Blue Moon"! :-) I haven't even READ any digests since I last posted, so I don't know what's been SAID on REPLICAS so far. I DID notice that the size of the last digest was up though - which means that it probably contained the Q&A session, and with that, probably DEREK's announcement on the NEW topic. What can I say? The Olympics have been on! (Now, WHAT can I blame it on NEXT month? :-) Just call me "incorrigible" :-) ). Since REPLICAS is a THEME album, it's a bit hard to take it apart piece by piece - although, that probably won't stop me when we get to WARRIORS! (but that WAS a LESS cohesive effort) - so, for the third different approach in as many critiques, I'll just tell the story of how THIS album contributed to making me a NUMANOID!! (though, I reserve the right to comment on specific songs as I see fit! :-) ). The time is January 1, 1980. The birth of the 80's! Up UNTIL then, I had been you're basic "teeny-bopper". I was 15, and the ONLY albums I possessed were by ABBA and JOHN PAUL YOUNG (anyone outside of Oz probably has never heard of JPY), with MOST of my music being procured by simply taping songs from the radio when the Top-40 was on! I STILL like the aforementioned artists, by the way! So, ON this fateful day, I WON (through a radio contest) the Top-100 albums of 1979! It took awile for the prize to get to me, but I finally had them around-about the end of the month. Needless to say, REPLICAS was one of said albums. Still being an atypical teeny-bopper, I would just play SONGS that I liked from albums - NOT the albums themselves!! I quite liked AFE, and so played this quite a bit. After a while, given that AFE was the SECOND song on the album, I figured I might as well just put the needle on the START of the album, and see what this FIRST song was like as well. Turns out, I quite liked THIS one as well! (Of course, I DON'T need to tell you what song THAT is). So, for a while, I was listening to TWO songs off this album. As you can probably guess, after a little while longer, I tried listening to the WHOLE album (GASP! HORROR!!). "HEY! I LIKE this!!" (well, it probably wasn't THAT immediate). So, along comes "The Touring Principle" in May. I like REPLICAS. I like "Cars". I might go along (ONE album wasn't enough to "break" me yet!). This was my FIRST EVER concert (at the ripe old age of 16 - Mum wouldn't let me go to see ABBA when I was 12! :-( ). Needless to say, I was blown away! A Numanoid is born! (and ALSO needless to say, there's NEVER been another concert quite like it! He never came back here. :-( ). Quickly got TPP and TA, and the rest, as they say, is history. My "adult" taste in music had been born. A teeny-bopper no more! Many people thought I would "out-grow" GARY. We ALL know how ridiculous THAT concept is!!! (How many OTHERS have had this said to them??). So, as for some comments on the music itself - the second side isn't QUITE so strong as the first. In PARTICULAR, I think the instrumentals could've been dropped for some of the OTHER songs. I LIKE "When The Machines Rock", but "I Nearly Married a Human" SUCKS!! When the other songs DID come out, my reaction was along the lines of "How could GARY keep this BACK from us??!!". I PARTICULARLY like "We Have a Technical", and "Only a Downstat" (and of course "We Are So Fragile" - which had come out earlier). These songs would fit in PERFECTLY on the album - he could've even just released them ALL as a Double! (It makes me wonder how GARY DECIDED what to include? We COULD ask him, but given his history, the answer will probably be "I don't remember"!! :-) ). One of my FAVOURITE lyrics is "He wore a number 7 badge on his collar. He would show it with pride and say 'it means I can feel'" (SOMETIMES, I feel like I'm one of the FEW number 7's in the world :-( ). I also like (out of RECENT experience) "I know I'm wrong but, what makes you right?". And a lyric which could start of a RAGING debate all of it's own is "I'm still confusing love with need". Of course, I'm taking this OUT of context, but I'd say that love IS a need! (and I DO know what he means, before you all get your knickers in a twist! Readers of my FURY posting will know that "The Need" is STRONG in me!! :-) ). Finally, I think that the much-quoted "We are not lovers, we are not Romantics - We are here to serve you" is a very powerful lyric. It PERFECTLY sums up what a "friend" is! Given that a LOT of GARY's early lyrics are "borrowed", I wonder if THIS is an original? I HOPE so, but it has that "borrowed" taste to it (knowing what some of the others were). So - I got a question (maybe someone can ANSWER this one!). Does anyone know what a "U.D." is? I SEEM to remember reading somewhere, sometime, what this was, but I forget (or am just IMAGINING things!). And did we get an answer about the "7.4" on the lyric sheet?? I KNOW what an "S.U." is if anyone is wondering (and it's not in the FAQ)!! Time to go off and think of an excuse for posting late NEXT month! :-) Me! I disconnect from you. DONALD PEDDER.
