It certainly wasn't my intention to stop any one person trying to rip off anyone else. You described a video. I recognised it as "Newman Numan" and thought it worth giving any list members unaware of its existence that information. That was all. In fact, I even said it was worth getting for the slightly different version of I Die:You Die. Frankly, I don't see why you are so upset. Myself and Robert Bush merely pointed out that such a video did exist commercially. I don't think either of us described you as "unscrupulous", or said "don't pay over the odds for this, he's trying to rip you all off". Finally, what this extract from your mail is on about:- >"I challenge these individuals who feel that I was trying >to rip-off collectors to provide EACH ONE OF THEM with a copy of the >video at cost to right this horrid wrong. This is the only way that >you can possible place yourself in any position of authority: by >providing that which you cannot find at a price you cannot afford. >Otherwise, you need to sit like the complacent do-gooders you are on >the periphery of dealings beyond you understanding or economic grasp. >Essentially, you need to either right the wrong or remain silent." Well, I'm sorry; again, I don't see why you got so steamed - unless you really WERE looking forward to making a killing on this item and now can't accept that its not worth perhaps what you thought it was. If that is the case, that seems to be your problem, not anyone elses. Lighten up dude! I've been selling my old vinyl recently for far less than it was worth 5 years ago; c'est la vie, that's the way it goes. So, guess how I felt about this months topic (Strange Charm)... No, it wasn't all sub-par(imho), actually some of G's best stuff came from it(imho), such as: Time to DIe, This is Love, My Breathing...) But the overall sound is a little too ~quick and easy~ for me. Like he didn't have much time for it or didn't put 100% behind it. I rarely listen to it all the way through. On the other hand, the good stuff is really good. And the sax on the songs I mentioned is very good (yes, I am one of the ones who like the sax and female backing vocal). And to even blur my opinion further, this album is from one of my favorite Numan times(Berzerker, Fury, SC). So there. =] Brad Day Atlanta, GA ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Aug 1996 16:21:46 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Criticism of Karl - some comments To: numan@cs.uwp.edu A few people have posted criticizing Karl Miller for his auction of a copy of the Newman Numan video. Karl came to his own defence in no uncertain terms in the last issue (#251). Perhaps a few things need to be made clear. Karl is not a subscriber to this list so he is not part of opur group. I pointed him to the Numan Digest when he offered several, some rare, Numan CDs for sale on rec.music.marketplace at very respectable prices. I don't know why he is selling his Numan collection, but that is none of my business but he may not be in the position to be as charitable as many subscribers are in offering Numan items. As to his offer of the video. In #249 he said: >Now, I am going to leave bidding open, but I would like to start at $25 >and go from there. If you want this, please do not offer me some >screwball price. Buyout price: $100. For the $100 sum, I will send the >video next day to your home/office. Oh, the tape and case are in mint/nm >condition. As you can see, he is auctioning it with a starting bid of $25 i.e. a fair price. Auctions allow people to offer what an item is worth to them. If someone offers more than they can afford that is the buyer's problem not the seller's. The $100 mentioned was a sum that Karl said would close the auction with the video being dispatched next day. He was not asking for $100 for the video. He was giving someone the opportunity to obtain it, if their desire to have it was matched by those resources. The perceived value of the video depends on the individual. It has been out of print for years, it cannot be found in stores without an incredible amount of luck, the likes of which are unlikely to be experienced by anyone on this list with this particular item. Some people may be happy to get dubs off other subscribers but some might want the original with the outer sleeve. SI see nothing wrong with offering this for auction in order that he get the best price that someone is willing to pay. Karl was more blunt than I am. But basically he was correct in saying, if you cannot supply an original copy to all those who want it for less than $25 each, you are in no position to criticise. He has every right to offer an item for sale/auction and everyone has the right to bid for it or not. No one is forcing anyone to do anything against their wishes. I don't care how out of print or rare "Newman Numan" is - $100 is to high a price to pay for a video cassette... but if the seller can get it, more power to him. 2. Ashley from Australia- need e-mail from you again as I can't seem to send you anything without it bouncing back to me :-( I am sending NEC the money Friday the 9th, hope to have the tapes ready soon :-) 3. Derek, NUMA 1006 is probably one of the Vinyl singles from Strange Charm, check your copies of I Can't Stop, and such like... It might also have been one of the "other" artists from NUMA... 4. Joey Lidstrom, when is the next contest? The last one was way too fun... My dear (soon to be) wife Cara is leaving me to go be a Ph.D. student at Washington State Universtiy in Pullman WA. This is a town about the size of my bathroom. She is taking plenty of Numan with her to keep her sanity. This means that for the next four months, I will be all alone in Seattle. So if anyone fancys a visit up my way, you are invited! I just hope Cara dosen't stay in her Ph.D program as long as Derek has :-) ---------------------------------- "I'll be the in to your sane..." I live in the UK, am 33 and single (So if you want to write to me please do :-)) and have been into Gary's "music" since I FIRST heard "Down in the Park" all those YEARS ago. From then it's been up and downhill all the way, taking in the wonderful ("Telekon", "Dance", "Sacrifice") and the truly CRAP ("Outlands", "The Fury", "Metal Rythmn") I have seen Gary a few times now and have enjoyed his shows every time apart from the last concert (The Premier Tour) which was about as exciting as an Andrews Sisters gig. I also LIKE Depeche Mode, Bowie, WIRE, Joy Division, Cat Stevens and Garbage. Interesting that Numan so OFTEN sites Mode's "Walking in my shoes" as a major influence on his recent recorded material. As much as I like "Sacrifice" it does resemble a watered down Mode album in many places. Still better than than sounding like Janet Jackson, i GUESS. I was on the Numan list about a year AGO and only left as work commitments meant that computer time was THOROUGHLY limited, so it's nice to be back. Nice to see that MY idea of a monthly topic to talk about HAS been taken up by the powers that be. Does Matthew Holbrook still post his Numan visits stuff? I used to really look forward to THAT :-) Anyway, I shall no doubt be posting goodies to THE list every now and again, so eyes peeled. To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" Greetings to all of the numan-digest regulars, and hello to Derek Langsford. I've been a subscriber to the numan digest for a little while now, and thought it might be a good time to introduce myself. My name is David Pipe, age 34, and I live in San Francisco, California. I've been a HUGE Numan fan since "Replicas" in the late 70's and have attempted to get my hands on anything numan since. I recently completed a trip around the world, which included the U.K. where I was able to make some much-needed additions to my collection (especially on CD - most of the stuff I have is on vinyl, which I'm not really interested in collecting any further). The only CD I seem to be missing is "Metal Rhythm" - hopefully it will turn up in the import section of Virgin Megastore here soon. I'm also eager to get the CD re-releases of "The Fury" and "Strange Charm". My numan CD's sound *great* on the cool Bang & Olufsen stereo I picked up in Denmark! I'm eagerly awaiting "Exile" and would actually like to travel to the U.K. next year to attend a tour date or two (if there will in fact *be* a tour). Anyone here in the States (especially on the West Coast) who would be interested in coordinating a trip, flying together, sharing accommodations, whatever - please contact me. Please send all replies to my PRIMARY email address, which is: dwpipe@ix.netcom.com I'm sending *this* message from my office since I obviously don't have enough to keep me busy at the moment. Hoping to make several new "numanoid" friends through the digest in the future. I am around 30 years old .. first got into Numan cos of 'Are Friends Electric' .. blah .. blah .. blah .. I am wondering if I am the only Numanoid in Singapore ? I work here now but last year managed to arrange my yearly holiday in the UK to coincide with the last tour ! Related to the video 'Newman Numan' for 100 quid - I think the majority is right - it is a bit steep ! I myself own a copy (which I had to look high and low for about 6 years ago) As Numan is releasing a lot of stuff has anyone heard about a release of 'Numan Records Year 1' on CD ? It had Caroline Munro's version of 'Pump Me Up' and a few other tid-bits from John Web, Paul Gardiner etc PS - check out my WWW pages below - only dont expect any Numan material on it as it is well represented the world wibe web over ! If you look at the CD listings 1004 and 1006 are missing. i wonder if he'd released and album for someone else? I'd be interested in finding out myself. wayne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Aug 1996 16:25:37 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: NUMA 1006 question To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Thanks to Thomas Dieckman the mystery has been solved. NUMA 1006 was the Hohokam album "Seven Deadly Sins" that was ready to be released and given a catalgoue number but the band broke up just before thje release so Numa did not release it because there wasn't a band to promote it. I was trying to get ahold of MicroMusic several years ago and couldn't find it listed in anyone's catalog for less than $112. As for Numa 1005 or Numa 1006 (whatever Derek was asking about), wasn't that the Numa Records year 1 compilation, or was it the Hohokam LP? Tony R. Now that the internet = has bought us all together in our common interest (or fascination) I = don't want to see it become a place where greed and deceit become common = place, I have bought merchandise through this forum and am satisfied. I = loss several bids, but that's how it goes. I am still searching for an = Automatic CD and Metal Rhythm CD. With all this current exposure = merchants think they can jack up the price on what they consider rare. = For me what is rare is what I don't have and want. It's been a long time. However a $100 does seem a little steep for Newman Numan. Good though the video is, it isn't impossible to get and your "inappropriate" valuation might suggest to the more sensitive digest members that you haven't got their best interests at heart. Poor things. Loved the tone though of a lighter note.....Just when the (writing) style weirdos seemed to have vanished. We're back with a real bad case of "what is he on?" If I SPOKE like this it would PROBABLY DRIVE my friends to repossess THEIR record collecTION and cease all friendly communications with ME. In Donald Pedder's case I can just laugh though and stop eating my dinner and write this mail. Just in case you never REALISED. :-) Love as ever Alexander Deacon zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
