Gary Numan Digest Sun, 1 Sep 96 Volume 1 : Issue 258 Today's Topics: ADMINISTRIVIA Don't be a dummy Newbie To List Numan poster Numan tribute -- of sorts ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Aug 1996 15:51:10 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Karl Miller ----------- After finding out that several subscribers have been unhappy with the way in which Karl Miller has conducted business with them (that includes myself) I tried to address the issues with Karl indicating his sales protocol was dishonest (confirming offers then selling reserved items to others without telling the original confirmee) and unethical (breaking email contracts of sale without warning or telling the individual until the customer asked where their CD/video was). The price of the video is not an issue here. Karl tried to respond to my email via the Digest but Dave Datta and I decided it was not appropriate being a reply to a personal email, and not having anything to do with Gary. Basically Karl thinks he has every right to reject a confirmed sale if payment is not received in a timely manner. Timely seems to be on the order of 4 days. This I consider to be completely unreasonable. I also disagree that he is can unilaterally break an email contract, something he does not view as being legally binding. Karl wanted me to tell everyone that I forced him to break his contract with two subscribers to whom he promised the Tubeway Army/Dance and TPP/Warriors UK 2 CD sets. I'm sorry for those concerned but I only did so because I had reserved them on the Friday with the deal being I find him a copy of a deleted CD by the next week. He then promised them to others by Monday, after offering one of them in the set sale he posted to the Digest on the intervening Sunday. It was only after I enquired on Monday about the status of those sets that he told me he had "apperently (sic) sold them to someone else". I was notified of a copy of the CD he wanted on Tuesday and thus felt that having honoured my part of our original agreement/contract (on which I had spent several hours over the weekend) he should do the same. I requested he cancel the sales to the others who were unfortunate enough to think they were getting the CDs I had reserved. While I don't feel I need to personally apologise to those who thought they'd be getting the Tubeway Army/Dance and TPP/Warriors UK 2 CD sets, I am sorry you were brought into this situation. I confirm that in future, I will not tell non-subscribers to post sale lists on the Digest but will point the Digest subscribers to the sale elsewhere. Dave and I will also be on the look-out for any innappropriate posts by Karl to the Digest. And as for buying stuff from him, caveat emptor - buyer beware! Just got the Tubeway Army/Dance UK BB 2 CD set and yes, I remember the UK Lee Cooper Jeans ad that is tacked on the end of "Remember, I Was Vapour" (live). Can't remember the pictures but I think it was young people in white t-shirts and of course Lee Cooper Jeans but then again so many hundred of ads for Jeans have come and gone since then that I could be cnfusing it with something else. I also notice that Gary showed his ability in poor diction from the very beginning :-) Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. I have been a fan since I first heard 'Cars' on American radio in 1979. I immediately ran out and purchased the 45. I was particularly interested in hearing the B-side, to hear what else this Gary Numan character had to offer. I subsequently wore out the B track, 'Metal'. 'Metal' remains to this day one of my favorite Numan tracks. It is actually quite odd to me to discover the following Gary has on the web, and even harder to respond to it. For so long it has felt to me rather like having my own personal rock star. No-one around me is familiar with his music (other than 'Cars', of course). But I always managed to find his work. I am pleased to say after perusing a few online discographies that I appear to have almost everything that is available. The only exception being 'Berserker' on CD (I have it on vinyl and cassette). After discovering his following in cyberspace however, I find I am supposed to share him with you lot. Oh well, here goes... My favorite songs (in ever changing order) are: I Die:You Die, The Image Is, It Must Have Been Years, War Songs, Metal, Moral, Love and Napalm, From Russia Infected... Favorite Albums: Telekon, Outland, I, Assassin, Sacrifice, Dance,... I don't want to sound too melodramatic, but Gary's music has basically been the soundtrack to my teen and adult life. His sound leaves a profound impression upon me and I have been unable to find an equal elsewhere in music. Although few admit to it publicly, I consistently hear his influence in other artists' music. A few bands I also like: Ultravox, Bush, Nine Inch Nails, Tears For Fears, Thomas Dolby, The Beatles, Midnight Oil, Smashing Pumpkins,... I have received three issues of the list thus far, and aside from the bum feeling that I have lost my private rock star, I am enjoying it immensely. 'And I believe in faith and magic, And I believe in love and wonder. And I'll believe in you when you come for me, And I'll believe in you when the world comes apart.' Unfortunatley he did not pick it up for me, was 13 dollars. Seeing I can't convince my wife to drive to Chicago (I''m in St. Louis) just for a poster. Was wandering if any Numan fans in the Chicago area could help. I'd be willing to pay for shipping and a little extra as a bonus. Now the store he saw it in is Reckless Records, can't remember but think he said it was the downtown store. He also didn't say how many they had of this poster. In the poster Gary was wereing a suit, showed him a cover from Dance, but said that wasn't it. If any one can help, I'd appreciate it.
