But last week radio station KROQ had there annual 1996 Flashback 500. Supposedly, "according to your votes". Usually they advertise for people to write in for there favorite 80's songs. But I'm positive they just dump these postcards in the trash, and a program directer just picks the most popular songs that where played in the 80's. So, I expected they would probably play Cars, but nothing else. But comming in at 444 was Are Friends Electric. This was the first time I've ever heard anything other then Cars on the radio. So I was really surprised to hear AFE on the radio. Of course they did play Cars it came in a bit higher at 109. In a Numan period 1985-1993 that many fans regard as a trough in Numan's career, one of the few shining moments was the single 'Radio Heart'. It was the only Numan song that one of my friends liked - so much so that he bought the 12in version and is still playing it regularly to this day. He claims it summed up his life at the time: 'I hear a sound in the night Could be the turn of a key And when I switch on the light It's you I'm hoping to see Imagination - it plays a cruel, cruel game' Can't beat that really. Admittedly, London Times was shite, but even that was a step above the dire 'I Can't Stop' and the whole of Outland. And when you think of the hoplesss cacaphony of Sharpe and Numan's output and the embarrassing 'U got the look', surely Radio Heart was a plus point rather than anything else. I remember seeing I, ASSASSIN in the record bins in late 1982. I was hesitant about getting it because DANCE had gone off on a bit of a tangent when compared to the previous albums. I was afraid of what Gary could have gotten into with this newest album. (Although, in time, DANCE became an album I'd listen to when I'd tired of the others. I grew to enjoy it just as much as the others.) I wasn't disappointed with I, ASSASSIN at all though. I particularly enjoyed the title cut, as well as the entire first side. Some people slagged "The 1930s Rust," but I kind of enjoy it. It's not Numan, but it's not a bad song to sing along to. My favorite cut, though, is "We Take Mystery (to Bed)." It is one of my all-time favorite Numan songs. I don't know if it was the time it was released, the cover-art or what, but it seemed to be a dark album for me, even though the material itself isn't particularly menacing. It had an air of nostalgia about it, but it was almost like a longing for a lonely time. An odd feeling, but it always creeps into my thoughts on that album. In other thoughts... The Sleeproom is now back online after having been retooled a bit. With the new design, I'm doubling my efforts to make The Sleeproom better. After the 'incident' with Radio Heart and what happened with the album release, what made you decide to get involved with David and Hugh Nicholson again for 'Like A Refugee'? A25. That was all my dads idea, Radio Heart and Refugee, and he's a forgiving man. So not exactly gossip worthy, but there you go! If anyone knows any more then I'd be interested to find out... Matthew ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Sep 1996 11:24:56 -0700 From: m.r.p.@ix.netcom.com (Mike Przytarski) Subject: Some CD's I found To: Gary Numan The other day I happened upon several Gary Numan CD's in the local Best Buy. They were: Human The Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983 (2 CD) The Story So Far (3 CD) And of course I bought them. Anyway, I really liked HUMAN. I am more into his music than lyrics (and really like Patric O'hearn), so its good for work. I knew The Best of was just a BB release of all his stuff that he did under his label, so was content with the new version of CAR's and some CD versions of some songs I have yet to aquire in a studio mode from his first few albums. I think I am dont with the BB hits now though. Between Castle, BB and the Premire Hits I have as many copies of the older stuff that I can handle. The Story So far was also a HIT's box (and yes I do remember the info you all sent when it first came out). But once again, on MY DYING MACHINE and THE SLEEPROOM it was nice to get his 'hits' from the albums put out AFTER his departure from BB. These are the first I have seen that focus on his days after 1983. The live TIME TO DIE was nothing more than the BERSERKER tour CD. I found songs from the SKIN MECHNANIC and WHITE NOISE on it. I suppose its a LIVE HITS CD. Was nice to not buy a CD set without CARS on it though. 8^) Well thats all for now. Gotta go plug in again...... Mike ps. I did get the Numan Newman VHS tape and it was in really great shape and kinda nice to watch. Too much in the concert video though. Would like to find a newer tape with newer concert stuff after the BESERKER tape. -- I'm told it's called 'The un-reality dream' I'm told its called 'The great american lie' I'm told that this is like the vengeance of God I can't believe that God would do this to me. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Sep 1996 14:13:32 -0500 From: ffpmedic@anet-dfw.com Subject: SUBSCRIBE To: zztop@uiuc.edu, youngwives@sjuvm.stjohns.edu, yoga@inet.it, SUBSCRIBE TODD BARKAU ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Sep 1996 06:16:11 +0000 From: PHILIP JACOBSON Subject: topic o' the month To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Before I begin, I wonder if anyone else had a bunch of weird and incoherent stuff in the last digest. I'm unsure if it was an accident or if I just wasn't comprehending what it was due to a stressful day at work or lack of cyber experience. It strikes me as sort of amusing that I can share my comments of this album now, as opposed to when it came out; I was then a year away from graduating high school. While I was somewhat fanatical about Gary, no one else I new was; the few friends I tried to share the music with only complained and put blasted their Aldo Nova. Gag. I'm hesitant to say I, A. is my favorite Numan album, but it is right up there. I have always particularly favored We Take Mystery (To Bed) Early Version. The delayed sax and uninteligable vocals were cool in a dark, threatening sort of way. I felt I would never be as happy finding old material on a CD format as when Beggers included it on the new 2-CD releases. I enjoy the album as a whole because I think it was a climax of sorts... it has always struck me as a point in Gary's career when he had very strong inclanations of what he wanted to put forth. I'm not sure if this is correct or not, but it's the vibe I've always felt when considering the album in the scope of all of his music. That's all I have to say, but it something.
