I've had the Digest forwarded to me for several weeks now (thank-you Miss Marlene) until I could find some time for a 'proper' introduction, so here goes. My name is Robert Davis, I'm 30 years of age, live in San Diego and have been hopelessly addicted to music since my high school days. KROQ, probably one of, if not THE most influential radio stations for new/alternative music (at least in the early '80's), was essentially the soundtrack of my youth. Consequently I have a significant attachment to music from this era. Gary's biggest, and only, U.S. hit was the first song I heard, and of course I was hooked from that point on. I still remember having written GARY NUMAN "Cars" on my 'Pee Chee' folder! (Remember those??). The only other song I've ever heard on the radio was "We Take Mystery To Bed" which became (and has stayed) my all-time favorite Numan song, along with the album from which it came. I was too young to attend concerts when 'Teletour' came to the states, but had started to see shows in '82. First concert--Berlin in the rear storage room of Colton Piano Warehouse! Still one of the best shows I've ever seen. But one aspect of this concert shattered me then and still affects me to this day: While waiting for the show, I spotted a concert-goer with an 'I, Assassin' tour shirt. WHAT!!! How could I have missed that?? I actually was on top of this album and by that time had already played it to death. Why didn't this get any significant advertisement? 'I, Assassin' aside, I knew that missing this tour meant I'd probably never get to experience live performances of songs from my second favorite album, 'Dance'. I've seen hundreds of shows in my life, but missing that one will forever haunt me. With each passing year and new album it became obvious that there would be no more Numan tours in the states. This, coupled with my declining interest in each successive album, caused me to all but write him off as finished. I had friends who sent me tapes of his work, but the direction he went musically from about 1984 on just didn't do it for me (I'm one of those who abhors the 'female vocals-techno-dance-saxophone' rut he was in for so long). That is until Sacrifice came out. WOW!! He's back! By far the most significant work he's done, IMO. So, it's great to be excited about Gary Numan again, an artist for which there is no equal. As mentioned above, I have a real love for music from the late 70's/early 80's, to the point where I've created the beginnings of what I hope to be a huge database of 'New Wave' music--from ABC to Yello and EVERYTHING in-between. (Please contact if interested). Other favorites include And Also The Trees, lots of 4AD bands, early Factory bands, Killing Joke, Hole, Love & Rockets, anything Brian Eno touches, Ride, Foo Fighters, STP, Talk Talk, Sweet Jesus, etc. Well, sorry for the lengthy intro--I guess it's kinda hard to edit my enthusiasm. And to think there are so many other music-related stories to share. Another time, perhaps. Cheers, ~Robert ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Sep 1996 14:21:21 -0400 From: Micromuzak@aol.com Subject: A Polite Suggestion To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I just recently read the last two digests. I read a message from someone who nailed the young fan who asked Gary about WWF figures. I too, thought what the heck was that person thinking. I then, read the actual questions to Gary only to find out, it some poor old 13 year old who wrote it. Not only did I think it was cute, but my heart was so saddened to think that one of us "older" fans could be so cruel as to rip on this young fan. Gary's response was so nice, he knew "who" he was talking to and didn't rip him for it. Lets show a little compassion. Come on, he's only thirteen! That kid's alright with me, a fan at 13, he wasn't even born yet when Gary was at #1,2,3,4 and so on. Sorry about the post, I generally don't respond to other's opinions, but it really made me sad to read the rip on the poor kid. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Sep 1996 10:17:37 -0400 From: "Richard V. I must agree, not only where there some odd questions, but some of the questions seemed a little mean spirted. like the "You used to dress like a tuff boy" and " Your stoic stage prescence was better then the your current one". These quotes are parapharesed and of course just my opinion. I know Derek goes through great pains to put the Q&A together, and it would be a shame if we pissed off Gary, and he quit answering all Q&As. I know there are a lot of people that aren't going to like this idea, but maybe we should give Derek permission to excercise a little more censorship. I mean we should still be able to ask Gary pointed question, but in a rational sane way. Also there are a lot of questions that get asked over and over. For example: What was it like to work with Bill Nelson, what was it like to work with Mick Karn, when will you tour the states, will you ever bring back the old band etc. These people should always be refered to the FAQ. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Let me first start off by saying that this digest is as good as ever...and i read every post of every issue. Secondly, i am more of a lurker, but i figured i would lend a piece of constructive criticism...I think I speak for every digest member when I say that 'Digest asks Gary' is unparalleled by any other group or artist I can think of...after a year of reading it and participating, i still am in awe of the appreciation Gary has for his fans... ok, the point: Lets try to be a bit more creative with our questions for Gary...imagine after hard day at work for Gary, he sits down and has to answer questions about whether he believes in God or not... cmon people, that should be in the FAQ file already.... and the action figure questions and video questions (while they made me laugh) might be able to be replaced with a somewhat more pertinent question to gary's career, which is why I think this Q&A session was set up in the first place.... I could be wrong, but I would hate to see it end b/c Gary feels it is a waste of time.... my suggestion: If you are new to the digest, read through the previous 'The digest asks Gary' (which is now archived) and become familar with what has been asked, and what kind of questions he seems to thrive on more...music, flying, his career...etc... agree, disagree? i just want this to last.... -Danny C "time heals nothing, it merely rearranges our memory." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Sep 1996 15:01:54 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Gary's catalogue - out of control? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu At the moment there's a compilation a week appearing in the UK but it appears everything that is not coming from NUMA, BB or Polygram can be sourced to Trojan and Receiver deal. This is becomming tiring. FIrst more details on the Rialto compilation that appeared last weak. =46rom Matthew Holbrook's Nu-Zone: 15 Sep 96 - Further Compilation CD Fiasco It's compilation CD time again. The latest has got to be the most bizarre yet. It comes from the UK's Rialto Records - believed to be linked to Receiver Records. The release is entitled Gary Numan "Archive" and carries the release code RMCD 205. All of the tracks on the CD appeared on the recent Receiver 3 CD box set. Here is a summary of what is on the CD, rather than what is listed on the packaging: 1. Are 'Friends' Electric? Live (Ghost?) 2. Me, I Disconnect From You Live (Ghost?) 3. U Got The Look Live (Isolate) 4. Berserker Studio 5. The God Film Studio 6. We Are Glass Live (Ghost?) 7. Poison Studio 8. Creatures Studio 9. Cars Live (Ghost?) 10. Call Out The Dogs Studio 11. God Only Knows Studio 12. Down In The Park Live (Ghost?) 13. We Take Mystery (To Bed) Live (Ghost?) 14. My Shadow In Vain Live (Ghost?) 15. Love Isolation Studio 16. Generator Studio The errors are numerous. "Call Out The Dogs" is listed to be live, but it is not. "We Take Mystery (To Bed)" and "My Shadow In Vain" are shown as being studio tracks but are in fact live. "Down In The Park" is shown as "Down In The Dark". The booklet is also innacurate and rather flimsy. The CD appears to be selling in the UK at mid price - around =A3 6.99. In America, the goin= g rate appears to be around $10. There appears to be almost a pattern to how the tracks have been selected. Tracks 1-3,6,9,12-14 come from tracks 1, 4-6, 9, 13-15 from the previously released Receiver "Time To Die" CD. The rest of the tracks were taken from the Receiver "My Dying Machine" and "The Sleeproom" CDs. Why this release has been made now is a total mystery. More information soon. 18 Sep 96 - And There's More You may find this hard to believe, but there is yet another Numan compilation CD sitting in the NU-Zone in-tray. Yes - a different one to last week's. This one comes from the Emporio label and has the code EMPRCD 666. The release has been licensed from Trojan Recordings Ltd and goes under the name "The Best Of Gary Numan 1984-1992". There are few mistakes - presumably because it is the most basic of releases, with no liner notes. The main problem is that "America" is live but it is not labelled as such. The cover is an extremely poor two tone picture of Gary from the Teletour. It is not clear whether Emporio is linked with Receiver, but most of the CD's tracks were included on the first two Receiver releases - and the next three for that matter. If you're thinking of buying this CD, don't pay more than =A3 3.99. It has been spotted at =A3 = 3.49 and even =A3 2.99. Here is the track listing, followed by the album cover: 1. I Can't Stop 2. Berserker 3. The Skin Game 4. I Still Remember 5. Machine + Soul 6. Empty Bed, Empty Heart 7. Are 'Friends' Electric? (Live) 8. Your Fascination 9. This Disease 10. Miracles 11. A Child With The Ghost 12. Strange Charm 13. London Times 14. Time To Die 15. America (Live) 16. My Dying Machine ---------- So that is now 7 CDs (inlcuding the boxed set) that can be traced to the agreement with Receiver but Matthew and I thought only 3 were agreed to. Is Gary's catalogue out of control? All these cheap compilations scream 'has been' IMO and they do nothing to promote Gary's new music. They almost make a singles collection for his post-Berserker material (which I suggested to NUMA last year) virtually redundant, especially with this latest compialtion taking the "Best of" title. If I were Gary I'd be upset and if these were not contracted I'd be calling my solicitor. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Perhaps subscribers are taking this access for granted. I'd advise new subscribers and even others to look back at previous Q & A sessions at Joey's site http://www.netway.ab.ca/worldwidewebb/confession.html to see what has been asked before. And also to make sure their question makes sense. Remember who owns rights to what albums/songs, that what goes in the US may not apply to the UK where Gary lives, that he just can't release anything we may want and he can't do favours as then everyone would want one. Gary is basically self-employed and has to be very careful with decisions. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. I didn't hear it in its entirity until the following year (1983) after I had bought "Warriors" which I was inspired to do after seeing Gary on the associated tour. While having liked the singles, something prevented me from laying down the dosh for this album. Maybe I was poor or something. I remember getting the tape of the album on sale more than a year later. Sadly Gary's albums often go on sale a year or so afer release, sometimes even sooner so the patient can get some great deals. I got my "Berserker" cassette and LP for L1.99 each! And that was only a few months after issue. Sad really. "I, Assassin" was a departure from Gary's previous work which rather than being unusual was de rigeur for him. This album was his more overtly rhythm driven than earlier albums. Not that every track is danceable. IMO that's why 'Music for 'Chameleons' had a video on 'Top of the Pop's' so the audience would not be left standing around looking like complete dorks during the quiet slow passages :-). But the superb fretless bass by Pino Palladino and the uptempo nature of many songs couldn't prevent one's foot from tapping, until 'We Take Mystery' just forced you to get off your butt and embarrass yourself on the dance floor, which for me consisted of my bedroom as Gary Numan was not played in any clubs I occasionally visited. This album has a groove. It's not light and fluffy, it's serious, moody. Gary again creates his own world. Long instrumental intros prevent most from being obvious dance floor material, so this is a thinking person's album for the armchair not the dancefloors. All the songs work for me. There's nothing I dislike. Even "The 1930s Rust" has its appeal. The consistency was lost on subsequent albums until Metal Rhythm then Sacrifice and for that reason I rank it quite high in Gary's catalogue. Particular favourites: 'Music for Chameleons', 'I , Assassin', and WTM. I prefer the album version of WTM to the extended. That silly twiddly bit in the extended version is out of place. The extended MFC is good though and I really like Chris Nelson's remix of WBaH. These session produced some of Gary's best b-sides from the powerful 'Noise Noise' which Gary admits should have been on the album, to the humour of 'Bridge, What Bridge?'. The early version of WTM is so different it shows how Gary's songs can evolve. This version is slow and plodding compared to the final versions. I remember the release WTM was delayed due to mixing problems (according to Radio 1 - a time they still played Numan). 'I, Assassin' saw Gary trying to hold on after the fans found 'Dance' hard to accept. This one raised further criticism that this was not the Numan they had originally liked. But time moves on. None of Gary's albums to that point sounded like any other. This continued that trend. And good stuff it is too if you can just get past the fact that it is not Telekon II. It made the top 10 album chart in the UK and the singles did fairly well (all top 30 with WTM getting to number 9 - his last top 10 hit! - Joey I suspect your No. 10 placement for the Warriors single is incorrect - I don't think it got into the Top 20). My only criticisms of the album would be that the uninspired artwork and the level of background hiss was surprising for this time and after a series of low hiss albums. This was accentuated on the cassette tape I had and obvious on the CDs. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. The trail of my acquisition of the Asylum sets was quirky, amusing, and serendipitous. When I first saw them, I looked on the back & saw the names of the singles and the album names, but it didn't click that the album names meant the whole album was included and I couldn't be bothered to have the store personnel let me look inside. A couple of years later, I ended up getting a job at the very same store, finally looked inside, and said, "Hey! good thing I was so stupid before, since I can now get them at the employee price, which is far below retail for imports."
