Check out the archive for the digest. Some time ago some guy was kind enough to mail in a translation of the booklet. Pretty standrad stuff talking about Gary and stuff, but as I'd been curious for some time as well it was nice to finaly be able to know what it said! He did two songs, one of which was "White Boys.." the other, of course, was Cars. I instantly fell in love with the song "White Boys.." and had to wait a whole two months before Gary's last release in the US under the ATCO label: "I, Assassin" came out. Overall, I see this album as an extention of the themes, moods, instrumentations, he began with "Dance". - More Sax, fretless Bass, etc. You can check my rating of this album on Joey's page, but as I think about it, I may not have rated it as highly as I might rate it now. This is a great album. Derek hits the nail on the head when he mentions it's consistancy, although I found "Warriors" to be just about as consistant, though not as listenable. More than anything, I identify Gary's "sound" as having come together with this album. Whenever I am trying to convert an unbeliever :-) I play "We Take Mystery..." and most of the time, it works. Probably that is my seccond favorite song next to the brilliant "My Breathing". One of the qwirky things about this album is that the liner notes list Gary's true last name and the month in which the song was completed. This information gave me an insight into the music biz that I did not as yet have. Can you believe that until this album came out I actually thought Gary's name had always been Gary Numan? How naive can you get? Also, I had no idea about how long it took to actually write out the songs for a reccord. Anyway, I would probably rate this as in my top three of Gary's albums. (TPP, Sacrifice, IA, ...) At least until "Exile" which may knock it all the way down to four :-) Bye for now and remember: "We need to Win like you need to Breathe..." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- orbit@ad1440.com (orbit@blarg.net) is: Robert Trousdale (206) 367-2254 formerly robt@u.washington.edu ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mandatory .sig quotes: "47.8% of all Statistics are Useless" -Anonymous "I'll be the in to your sane." -Gary Numan (Favorite Artist of all time) "While the kids live in filth and play in dirt, You think that's normal - That's the thing that hurts..." -William Orbit (Favorite Artist of all time that is not Gary Numan :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 1996 17:03:24 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Ray Coleman dies/EP of covers To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Two bits of news from Matthew Holbrook's NuZone (http://www.nuzone.org.uk) 19 Sep 96 - Ray Coleman Dies It is sad to have to report the recent death of Ray Coleman. Ray wrote the much respected "Gary Numan: The Authorised Biography" back in 1982. He started his journalism career on various newspapers before specialising in music in 1960 upon moving to "Melody Maker". He was editor-in-chief of the same paper for 10 years up until 1981. He then went on to write for a variety of publications. Not much has been heard of Ray in recent years but he was one definite supporter that Gary had in the media. 19 Sep 96 - More Covers Devo, the group famous for "Post Modern Man" and "Whip It", has spawned a subsidiary called Smart Patrol. One of the group's projects is supposedly an EP of Gary Numan covers. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H.
