I'm trying to maintain variety and move around Gary's catalogue to encourage posts from fans who like only certain albums. So, I thought it is time for an album that everyone surely has an opnion on - "Machine and Soul". >From the Discography: 1993 Machine + Soul 5:57 Machine And Soul 6:08 Generator 6:23 The Skin Game 5:02 Poison 4:28 I Wonder 5:31 Emotion 4:45 Cry 3:57 U Got The Look 4:38 Love Isolation CD UK Numa NUMACD 1009 LP UK Numa NUMA 1009 1993 Machine + Soul Extended 7:33 Machine And Soul 9:51 Generator 7:41 The Skin Game 6:39 Poison 6:33 I Wonder 8:00 Emotion 7:31 Cry 3:57 U Got The Look 6:30 Love Isolation 3:13 Dark Mountain 4:08 The Hauntings 4:12 In A Glasshouse 2:06 Hanoi CD UK Numa NUMACDX 1009 Other tracks include the early versions, 'Wonder Eye' and 'Cry Baby' plus Gary's '1999' cover and numerous mixes of 'Machine and Soul'. The "Money for Nothing" post has REALLY put the cat amongst the pigeons hasn't it! Mmmm... let me see.... Little faggot (well people did think he was gay) Make-up (he did use a fair bit) Earring (well he did/does wear one) Own hair (his lack of hair is well known - the "own" is being sarcastic?) Jet airplane (Okay - so he's got a prop airplane - jet fits better) Millionnaire (many caricatures were drawn depicting Gary running all the way to the bank) It all seems to fit. Did George Michael or Boy George have a jet aeroplane? However, Gary was well off the scene by the time Money for Nothing came out. Surley they had newer and better targets. I don't think we should underestimate how REVILED Gary was, (and unfortunately largely still is in the Music Industry). OK, he has a few admirers, but the vast majority can't stand him. Gary even admitted on a recent "My Top 10" feature on the VH-1 cable channel that when he first met Sting, Sting admitted that he HATED him when he first appeared in `79. Gary being ever so forgiving then went on to choose a Sting record in his Top 10! I shall go and peruse all the Dire Straits books in HMV Oxford Street tomorrow (God help me) to uncover the truth........ Regards to all, Austin, London ps - Bob Mills on the Vinyl Years on VH-1 on Wednesday evening showed the Micromusic version (Wembley farewell concert 1981) of Are Friends Electric in full. They HAVE got something other than Cars it would seem. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Oct 1996 12:49:32 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Exile update To: numan@cs.uwp.edu >From Matthew Holbrook's Nu-zone (http://www.nuzone.org.uk) 3 Oct 96 - Exile The Exile demo CDs are being released to the music industry in the next couple of days - but through music lawyers. The lawyers will be taking the CDs around to the various record companies. This may seem a little strange - but it has become common practice. If any interest is found then the Numan organisation will take over the management of the project. Two weeks is being allowed to look for some interest and a further two weeks is being allowed to investigate that interest. It should be noted that Gary's music does not fit the current music scene in any shape or form. For this reason, it should not come as a surprise if Exile is not picked up by a major label. If there is no apparent interest in the album by the start of November, Exile will be released on the Numa format, with licensing deals for other countries. If this is the case, a further two weeks of mixing will be required before the album is in its utterly finished state. If a record company picks up the album, they will no doubt want to make changes anyway. The Numan operation is convinced they could do a better job than with previous albums because of their experience with Polygram. If all goes according to plan, the album will be released at the end of January or early February - unfortunately a notoriously poor time for releasing an album. If the album does come out then, it is almost certainly too late to arrange any sort of major tour to promote it. However, Gary has been having severe problems with the cover artwork. He has lost all of the pictures for both albums, although bits have now started to surface. As soon as the artwork has been completed and printed, the albums will be ready to send out. It is not clear what format the albums will take but an extended mixes Fury and a standard Strange Charm would seem the best bet. If Knopfler overheard the conversation, its very likely the two workers didn't know much about Gary (that he's not gay, owns a prop plane, may not be a millionaire, etc.) but assumed things and said them. In this light, Knopfler's inclusion in the song would be more sympathetic to Gary. Mark knows its not an easy job or an easy life. [comment #3] > >I was amused to read the post in the last digest about the Yes song "Man in > >a White Car" being about Gary, and how the poster felt that having Yes do a > >song about Gary was a major compliment. Now, I happen to love Yes but check > >the "White Car" lyrics again: "Take all your dreams/And you throw them > >away". Doesn't sound too complimentary to me. I'm a huge Yes fan, and I'm pretty sure the lyric was "Take ON your dreams and you DRIVE them away". It may in fact refer to the fact that at such an early age Gary achieved everything he wanted and then had no place to go. The song was probably written in 1979. At that point Gary was a VERY young man with a hugely sucessful album. Just some thoughts. This and the video should be ready by the end of November. However it is unlikely they will be released until the Exile album has come out. One scenario is that both the live album and video could be offered as a package along with Exile to any record companies interesting in putting out Exile. This would make Gary look rather more attractive as there would be three ready-to-release products waiting for them. The live album is likely to be different from most of Gary's others. This is because the gigs on the Premier Tour were shorter than the last few. This means that 85-90 minutes worth of material will not really spread across two CDs. At the same time, it is too much for one CD. One option that was talked about some while ago was to remove the tracks that have continually appeared on live CDs and make them available on a second optional disc. This would be difficult to work and so a better idea might be to include two or three bonus track on a single - assuming that one is released. The Numan organisation is also looking at the possibility of releasing a different single towards the end of the year. What form this will take is unclear. Finally, one of the shows at the August festivals was recorded. This may see the light of day as a CD release - possibly to members of the fan club. All of these things depend on what happens to Exile. This is a note-for-note version of "You Are In My Vision". This follows the release of the band's two CD singles of "Are 'Friends' Electric?" last year. For that project, Gary mixed two of the versions which eventually came out as the Pacifica and Desert Mixes. Gary has now received hundreds of suggestions for what should go on the much-requested Babylon 8 CD. It has been decided to make this a six track disc, complete with remixed versions of these two forms of "Are 'Friends' Electric?" - complete with Gary's own vocals. Gary will be working on this project in the early part of October, although the "Are 'Friends' Electric?" recordings with Gary's voice were made last year. This time a Range Rover went into the back of a car which in turn went into the back of Gary and Gemma. Gary was not hurt but Gemma did receive some injuries - thankfully she has now made a full recovery. Gary will be going to North Wield for a week soon to teach on a formation flying course for the RAF. Gary has been offered a part in a film. If he accepts the role he will be playing the part of a drug dealing nightclub owner. Gary has reservations about his acting abilities but a meeting with the film director may put him at his ease. Gary was very apprehensive about his appearances at this year's festivals. These worries proved groundless and so the same may be true of acting.
