It probably doesn't mean anything that he then fouled out to the catcher. -- dave ''' C-OO "big science. hallelujah" david c carroll \ Seattle, Washington, USA - tvc15@speakeasy.org ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Oct 1996 08:54:43 -0600 From: Scott Lucado Subject: Background Music for the World Series?? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Fellow Numanoids: Was anyone watching Game One of the World Series? During a break while the Yankees were preparing another sacrificial pitcher, the TV announcers had temporarily run out of things to say, and in the background one could plainly hear the first 45 seconds of "Cars" being played over the stadium loudspeakers. The chord progression is similar (possibly identical) to "bombers", but has also been used in a thousand and one other songs. A real similarity to "bombers" can be heard in a track called "moonlight and muzak" by M (yes, of "pop muzik" fame). This track was actually the follow up to "pop muzik" in 1979, and bears a marked resembelance to the live version of "bombers" found on tyhe b-side of "complex". Anyway, it's hardly law-suit worthy. By the way, are there any other M/Robin Scott fans out there? Does anyone know what he is up to these days? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Oct 1996 12:54:54 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Fury reissue details To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In #272 Cbbrad@aol.com asked >What songs will be on The Fury extended when it is released later next >month. > >Will it be like Machine + Soul and have b-side singles or like Sacrifice >extended was. It will be like Sacrifice i.e. the same tracks as the regular album/CD with no b-sides. The extended version will last some 51+ mins compared to the 42+ min original CD. part from stretching the songs, the mixes are not very different. 'God Only Knows' has a different outro which is excellent. Due date is Nov. 25 in the UK but that may slip a week or two due to Pinncacle's busy Christmas distribution schedule. Sometimes Gary's CDs appear in the US before offical UK release dates. I think Pinnacle release them to export houses before UK issue date. At least that minimizes any delay between UK issue and US availability. Most of that era's b-sides are available on the 'Babylon' CDs in some form - Gary had to remix two because of tape damage. 'No Shelter' was not put on 'Babylon' but we still hope it will make it to a future 'Babylon' volume. Gary was trying hard to get a contract back then and rather than do his own thing he was writing and performing punk style songs as that was what was succesful. So it's not hard to imagine Gary getting ideas from other punk stars of the time. The Stranglers were my favourite 'punk' band while I was a teenager in the UK. I have all their studio album CDs before Hugh Cornwell left. Their first singles were: (Get a) Grip (on yourself) Peaches Straighten Out/Go Buddy Go I suspect the song was 'Grip' which has a similar break with "ooooh aaaaah oooooh aaahhh ooooh" vocals. Apart from that the songs I think are significantly different. Chorus line was: But the money's no good, just get a grip on yourself. I'll need to directly compare the two to see if any other similarities are evident. I haven't listened to the "Rattus Norvegicus' album in a long time. The song can also be found on at least one Stranglers single compilation - "Singles - the UA years". I don't know if it is on their "Greatest Hits" - doubt it as it was very early before they were famous. >Who is brave enough to ask Gary about this in the next "Digest asks". Not >me! You could ask if he was fan of The Stranglers. They were known as The Guildford Stranglers before they dropped the place name. Guildford is not far from where Gary grew up and so it is not inconceivable they crossed paths. Maybe I'll ask him about those days. This reminded me of something that's bugged me for many years. A lobg time ago, there was an arcade video game called "Reactor." I don't remember the manufacturer of this game - I think it came out around 1982 or 1983. There was a large trackball for a controller and the object of the game was to bounce atoms off of the walls of a nuclear reactor. The soundtrack very much reminded me of "Metal." I've listened to Gary Numan since I was 15 or 16. Me and my friend, Jay, used to write plays and stories based on Gary's lyrics for creative writing. We both had a love for S-F writer Philip K. Dick and always wondered if Gary was influenced by him. Lyrics such as "'Flow my tears,' the new police song" and "a random pol' check" fueled our speculation. And then one song somewhere around Warriors or I, Assassin actually used a sample from Blade Runner. I'm just going through sort of a personal Gary revival after buying the Best of '79-'83. I don't know anything after Warriors, except that i just bought Sacrafice yesterday but haven't given it a proper listen yet. I found this list while searching the web for reviews and hope it can catch me up. I don't play any musical intrstruments and am generally talentless. Sincerely Douglas P. My name in Chris Turner, I live here in South Africa and enjoy much of Gary's music. In fact, if I see something I don't have of his, I buy it!! I've been listening and collecting since "Replicas", and I now have just about everything, except for the odd live ones like "Asylum". I must have +/- 35 CD's(Including doubles). MY favourites in particular are "Telekon", "Sacrifice", "Dark Light", and "White Noise". Gary's extended albums are really billiant. One that doesn't do much for me is "Outland", even though I have made quite a few attempts to get into it. Judging by what I've seen on the Web, I'm not the only one. In this part of the world, most people haven't even heard of Gary Numan until you mention "Cars". I can't say his music is enjoyed by a lot of my friends either. So I glad to communicate with other Numan people worldwide. I can hardly wait for "EXILE". I should be able to get this on import here, but like other Gary CD's, at a price!! Anyway, cheers from Sunny South Africa. Chris EMAIL:- cturner@cash.co.za ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Oct 1996 00:01:49 +0100 From: "Laurent F. I recommend it for Numanoids, though I'm not quite sure about his later stuff, haven't gone that far yet. First four tracks appeal alot to me. Mathematically speaking...: Numan+U.S.=Trent Reznor .... :) btw... I got myself a Honda VFR 750 motorcycle this summer, and got myself a plain black helmet. Next thing I did was get my friend to scan in the blood on Gary's face from Dance, and got another friend to cut it out in red vinyl. Put it on the right side only of my helmet(who says asymmetry sucks?). It seemed to me a necessary touch. Might do the same to one of my bedroom walls after I paint it black... Laurent F. I was recently informed that there are already plans to release the Live at the Roxy 1977 album on CD by some company in England, so I am scrapping the idea. Thanks to all who contacted me who were interested. I'm glad to see this thing released, because I think it is important as a historical document of both Gary's career and the U.K. music scene during that time period. Tony R. Primitive Radio Gods are a one-man-band type of thing (sorta like Nine Inch Nails is Trent Reznor). However, from what I've been told, "SOABPBWMIMH" is quite atypical of the rest of the album. I've been tempted to buy it and find out for sure but haven't yet. They (the lead guy, who's name escapes me, and his touring band) played Cleveland a few weeks ago and the review I read of the show said the show bordered on being industrial/metal. So, take that for what it's worth. The song's been on MTV and alternative radio for quite awhile and is only now getting some airplay. (It was also on the CABLE GUY soundtrack, I think.) Personally, the only Numanoid-like characteristic I hear is the drum track which wouldn't sound out-of-place on SACRIFICE somewhere. I love the song though and I'm happy to see something interesting get some airplay for a change. So, I guess, the only real way to find out is borrow it from someone else. :-) Sean Caszatt, downstat@pgh.net curator: THE SLEEPROOM, a Gary Numan Website http://www3.pgh.net/~downstat/sleeproom Sean Caszatt, | "Nothing new unless you're bold." e-mail: downstat@pgh.net | - "A Box" - King's X http://www3.pgh.net/~downstat | Ear Candy - 1996 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Oct 1996 07:31:23 -0500 From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) Subject: The Fury To: numan@cs.uwp.edu The question was asked about what might be extended on the upcoming Fury CD re-release and according to Gary himself, it would be the extended mixes of the ENTIRE album. Unfortunately, I do have to agree that this song does sound very much like Bombers, (I say unfortunately cos I am more of a Numan fan than a Stranglers fan) mainly the guitar riff at the beginning and the ooooo aaaah aaaahs after the chorus (very difficult putting sounds into words), but I do have to say that as Bombers was an early Numan song that he would have written this at a time when he was being influenced (probably in a big way) by others and seeing as it was released in 1977, well what more can I say, other than it is a brilliant Stranglers single, and Bombers is a brilliant Numan song. Of course it could just be a coincidence, and I will have the guts to put the question to Gary in the next "Digest Asks" (fearless to the end). If there are any other Stranglers fans out there, let's hear your views. Oh and by the way, although M & S aint one of my fav's, I don't find it that bad, I have to say, I don't find anything he has done bad but life is a rollercoaster ride, isn't it?
