This was a Fan Club ONLY release >on cassette tape some years ago, I believe. Well, I'm probably not the only one to point this out, but for once, :-), Jeff's made a boo boo. Rather than being a fan club release, the extended mixes tape came out on regular sale some time after the normal length vinyl and tape. I know, 'cos I bought the regular tape on the day of release mistakenly thinking it would be extended as standard (like the Berzerker tape had been); but of course it wasn't, and so I had to buy it again some weeks later - not through the fan club, but in a regular high street place. (News date: Oct 25) A new British feature film is soon to go into production called 'Kinsman'. Gary has been approached by the film makers to play the part of Martin Langham, the principle bad guy. Gary is, as you probably know, very unsure about any acting abilities that he may posess and so feels that it's unlikely that he will agree to work on the film. However, everyone else that knows him thinks that he would be excellent and so he is still not definitely saying no. A meeting with the films director is due in early November when it is hoped that Gary can be persuaded to act in the film. SPEEDING. (News date: Oct 25) Gary was pulled over for speeding yesterday. Although the police wrote his ticket up for speeds between 90 and 95mph they did have video evidence that indicated that he may have been going as fast as 110mph. In the UK speeds above 100mph normally result in an automatic ban for a year. Gary was driving his Corvette at the time and, when shown the video, asked if he could have a copy but apparently that's not allowed. ---------- Could Gary survive without a driving license for a year? Can you imagine him riding passenger in Gemma's pink 2CV for a year? It boggles the mind! I liked the Skin Game single, and I was hip to the title track, but from the first play I really was . . . disgusted. This was really the Numan album that made me swear off blind faith Numan purchases! If it weren't for the digest's rave reviews of Sacrifice (by others who didn't really like M+S), I probably would have never bought another Numan album. I am being harsh, to be sure, but when you look at the output of this man, one stinker among. . . well, a shit load of great albums - it's nothing to feel so bad about. The only way to ensure every album being a masterpeice would be release less albums, and that would be worse than one bad one in 20 years. On the subject of Mean Streets, I have a Live at the Vortex comp with Bunch of Stiffs on it, and it sounds alot like Herr Webb singing back up to me! There is truth, lies, and that which is not mentionable. I like Spiral the best because it took some time to grow on me and there's a sort of musical theme that runs through the entire album. I saw Reznor on MTV about three years ago in an interview with Kennedy. She asked him what was in his CD player at home "right now." Almost without hesitating Reznor replied "the Best of Gary Numan" which is how I came to know there was such a thing. I also hear he produced a cover of Down in the Park for Marilyn Manson, but probably everyone here already knows that. Douglas P. Yes, Bombers is similar to Grip, so what, they are both excellent tracks. I recall a couple of years ago listening to Nicky Campbells' late evening show and an interview with JJ Burnell. When JJ was talking about other artists he mentioned Joy Division and Gary Numan.Nicky at this point gave an opinion that JD were "better" than GN. J.J. did not comment. It was quite illuminating and I think I will go out and plunk down some cash for this album. Now, for a trivia question. Answer will be posted next Sunday. If you know the answer, email me at numanoid@netway.ab.ca, and I'll identify everyone who gets it right when I post the answer. Don't post your answer here. Here's the question: What is the musical connection between Gary Numan and Star Trek: The Next Generation? (Hint: it's a very tenuous one, so don't go searching through all your old episodes for some aliens dancing to "Cars"). /--------------------------------------------------------- / Joey Lindstrom numanoid@netway.ab.ca lindstrj@cadvision.com / http://www.netway.ab.ca/worldwidewebb/ / "There's a reason 'Wheel Of Fortune' is on right after 'Jeopardy'. Yes, Gary had pre-ordained knowledge of what Han Solo would go through. Gary put himself in the position of the Han Solo character years before Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi would even exist and wrote a sort of poem in tribute to the Han Solo character(I'm sorry, if I just made anyone mad by saying that). I'll try to go through the lyrics with you all. Here goes: I'm playing at ice(A somewhat creative way of describing Han Solo's experiences concerning the carbon freezing.) But I'm finding it hard(This line is describing Solo's release from the carbon freeze. While he is regaining consciousness he is feeling the hardships of weakness and loss of feeling/sensation associated with being in carbonite hibernation.) She didn't break the wall(This is referring to Solo instantly realizing that he has been freed by Leia, but after being told that he is in Jabba's palace he instantly realizes that the crime rings he remembered still exist and Han thinks that the Empire must have greater concerns in mind than to deal with the crime rings. Han thinks this because he always thought that it was just a matter of time before the Empire would all but crack-down on and destory any un-Imperial, un-taxed transactions. Over the years a sort of wall had developed between the Empire and powerful criminal organizations. The Empire could have easily destroyed most of the major criminal organizations if it put out the effort, but for some reasons these organizations were, for the most part, left alone.) She just caught me off guard(This is simply referring to Han regaining consciousness and his bewilderment over the things that are currently happening to him. It's even a remark directed towards Solo's own sexist feelings towards women, especially towards a Princess. Han is facing the realization that a woman is his hero, not only a women, but a Princess at that.) I'm just a little bit sorry......But I haven't decided why(This is merely a line to express the confusion Han Solo is going through at the time he is released from the carbonite. He knows that some time has passed since he was frozen and in a way he fills a bit of sorrow for not being there during those passing times.) Could it be my memory(A simple reference to Han's bewilderment and temporary awe of what's going on and quite possibly a temporary memory loss could be associated with the carbon freezing.) Or did I ever really cry(This is sort of a self-confession Solo makes to himself for his love of Princess Leia. Living the smuggler's life that Han had lived for so many years, he had very little time for such things as love and warmth of heart. Han is sensing that he is trully loved, but Solo ask himself if he has really loved Leia in the past.) Fill my head with your false feelings(This would be a thought in Han's mind as he first hugged Leia after being released from carbon freeze. Though Han wasn't aware of Leia's dealings with Prince Xizor, a sort of sixth-sense was telling Solo that Leia's heart had recently been touched by another man's.) I can't trust anything you say(Han is listening to his senses, even though Han knows that Leia must have deep feelings for him to come to his rescue against such odds. Solo still notions to himself that Leia is only human and she could find another love.) Today I missed a special friend.....That never really cared anyway(This would be a comment that Han would make to himself reguarding his feelings for his Millennium Falcon, but deep within Solo knows the truth...that his Falcon is merely an inanimate object lacking feelings.) Can you see ice in my eyes(A notion in which Solo would be expressing his new found, true hatred for the Empire. Before his carbon freezing, Han's hatred for the Empire wasn't as refined.) Well, it's all pretty amazing considering that the lyrics to "Ice" were written long before Lucas would put the Han Solo character though the carbon freeze. Gary was quite a visionary indeed. Love, Brian(B.R.I.A.N.=Brian Really Is A Numanoid) P.S. Sorry about all that and any "spell-wrongs" that I might have spelled wrong! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Oct 1996 14:10:44 -0500 From: Judson Lind Subject: unsubscibe To: numan@cs.uwp.edu unsubscribe ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ****************************** _______________________________________________________________________ _____ ____ ____ _____ _____ / \ | | / \ / \ / \ / \ | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | G | | A | | | R | | Y | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |-----| |-----| | |-----| |-----| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | N | E | W | S |=====| | | | | | | | & | | | | | | | \_____/ I | N | F | O | | | | is produced and distributed by Derek Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To reply to the messages in this list, mail to: numan@cs.uwp.edu If you want to be removed, or someone wants to be added, you can mail to numan-request@cs.uwp.edu ----------------- The Gary Numan Digest is brought to you via Datta Production and Development, 905 97th Street, Kenosha, WI 53143 USA datta@cs.uwp.edu and computer resources courtesy of University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Datta Production and Development.
