It is of Gary's performances on Old Grey Whistle Test and John Peel from May and June 1979 respectively. He does Down in the Park,AFE,Films,Airlane,Cars, and Conversation. Sound quality is very good. Have no idea of its worth from a collector's perspective. However,if anyone is interested in this, you can e-mail me. Soon....when I am nopt lazy...I plan on going thro ALL my stuff and may be trying to sell some stuff and will post of that at the time....but I have been collecting Numan and a lot of other artists for a good 16-17 years so have a ton of stuff. Alan ------------------------------ Date: 20 Nov 96 14:24:40 EST From: Alexander Deacon <100603.3353@CompuServe.COM> Subject: Is there anybody out there... To: Numan Digest Don't worry i'm not about to tell you all how great Pink Floyd are. A couple of digests back Derek Langford commented a little on the lack of postings to the digest. As any one who is a regular subscriber to the list will know the last few months have seen the number of mails substancially decrease from the amount of stuff coming onto the list this time last year. Why? I'm sure a few of you reading this think I'm here causing trouble, as one or two of the more anally-retentive subscribers suggested earlier in the year. Causing trouble is, however, not on the Deacon agenda and never has been. But now is the best time to avert your eyes, if you're one of the more sensitive Numan fan. It's ok I'll tell you when to come back out. For the past year the Numan digest has turned, quite intensionally in my opinion, into one of the least tolerant and debateable mailing lists I subscribe to. I guess it started first with Matthew Holbrook failing to accept any degree of criticism over his, IMO, devastatingly wretched Numan write ups. While I can accept that no-one like criticism of their efforts, as a professional writer also, I can accept it also as part of the job. I know that his articles certainly filled my sundays and thursdays with merriment when he posted them but the boy won't post them again. I guess those that NEED to know can always waste some time visiting his site. Enough, Enough. Then again, whats wrong with a little bit of criticism, even if it strays a little bit off the Numan track? Seemingly everything, if the number of disgruntled mails is anything to go by. Why is this so, i wonder. Christ if it stops us talking about Numan's cat for a moment I'll be a thankful man. With the exception of "The Digest Asks Gary" the twice weekly lists are now becoming increasingly turgid and sterile, ok, there is nothing coming through but is the Cabbie Joe trivia section really worth the effort on his part? But what else is there to say anymore. Exile is stuck further out of our reach. No tour to chat about (or taunt the Yanks with). And everytime anyone deems to offer anything other than full on praise to Numan they are rounded on by the non-conscious members. Personally, I think a little bit more criticism of Numan is no bad thing. Of later their has been criticism of mailers for mentioning, so say "uncool" bands ( i plead guilty myself, your honour) but let us face the fact, Numan is hardly the cutting edge of music and even if Sacrifice is fucking streets ahead of his 85'/'93 output, in comparison to a lot of contemporary music it stinks. Past glories. Hmmm so i've been critical of the man himself, i suppose i'll get flamed to death. I'll try again. Is it me or are a lot of Gary's response's to the questions, a little on the stroppy line or, god forbid, patronising to the question asker. Then again we've got to be grateful to Gary for answering them so it's a difficult line to draw without incuring his offense. Nevertheless, we are his fans, without us showing an interest he'd be back at Heathrow humping magazines around again (or whatever it was he did all those years ago). I think that after some seventeen years of following the man, he would accept that we do have valid opinions and are not immediately satisfied with an "its my career, I'll do what I want" sort of comment. Ok it is his career but he'd be a fool to think he'll do anything without us, ultimately. 'Right you timid lot you can come out now. I hope this post makes the digest, as i've heard that despite the lack of mails in the digest recently a number of mails have not been included on the list. I don't know about their content, spurious rubbish or otherwise, but we could at least be informed if the list is now moderated or not. Like I said i am in no way trying to cause trouble on the list, just trying to instigate a (ir)rational and interesting debate on ther list until some real Numan news occurs. So come on should Numan be grateful that we are here? And at least the digest will have looked a bit bigger this time round Alexander Deacon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Nov 1996 14:29:50 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Latest news from NuWORLD To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Latest from NuWORLD: ---- 'THE FURY' AND 'STRANGE CHARM' ALBUMS ARE HERE (News date: Nov 20) We now have the re-release CD albums 'The Fury' and 'Strange Charm' in stock 5 days ahead of schedule. These albums have now been added to the CD order form should anyone wish to order them. ---- A NEW LOOK NuWORLD (News date: Nov 17) For the last few weeks Gary has been busy redesigning this NuWORLD site. The nu-look NuWORLD will go on-line towards the end of December, probably the 31st. It follows the current NuWORLD in terms of structure but has a few new areas and a very different look. Gary has concentrated on a site that is quicker to access, has interesting graphics only where it enhances the usefulness of the site, as opposed to art for the sake of it that takes an hour to download, hopefully more use of sound samples and a clearer interface. He still has a lot of work to do but we're very happy with the progress so far. We hope you like it too. ---- 'BABYLON 8' LATEST (News date: Nov 17) Gary has now recorded two new versions of 'Are Friends Electric?' for inclusion on the forthcoming 'Babylon 8' CD. They are both based on his 'Pacifica Mix' re-recordings of the song that he did for the band 'Nancy Boys' some time ago. One of the new versions is relatively conventional, with Gary just replacing the 'Nancy Boys' vocal with one of his own, but the second version is quite different with a very softly sung, almost whispering vocal which shows the song in a completely different, and completely excellent, light. 'Babylon 8' is now expected to be completed by the end of November and should be available in early January, possibly sooner. ---- NUMAN BIOGRAPHY (News date: Nov 12) It is a distinct possibility that a lengthy and detailed biography of Gary's life and career is shortly to be commisioned by a major music publishing company and will be available either late '97 or early '98. More news on this as things are confirmed. ---- 'REPUBLICA' DUET (News date: Nov 12) Saffron and Tim from the band 'Republica' came down to Gary's studio yesterday and recorded a duet version of 'Are Friends Electric?' with Gary. 'Republica' are now off to the States for a few weeks touring so the track will be finished when they return shortly after christmas. Musically it is based around Gary's 'Nancy Boys' remix of the song although the intention is to Republica-sise it somewhat. ---- Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. I've started a new area on THE SLEEPROOM (http://www3.pgh.net/~downstat/sleeproom/) that's intended to be a directory of Numan fans on the Internet. It's intended to give a rough idea of the presence of Numan fans on the 'net as well as to provide Numan fans with a listing of people with a common interest. All I'm asking Numan fans to do is submit their name, e-mail address, city and country to me so that I can list them on the website. It'd be like a Numan fan White Page Directory. Numan's an international artist, which is apparent from the number of websites from different countries. This is a chance to see, roughly, how widespread his influence is throughout the world. Also, it's possibly a way to get some great conversations started amongst those who love Numan and can't make it to the IRC channel much. (Like me!) The URL to visit is: http://www3.pgh.net/~downstat/sleeproom/skingame.html If you can't visit the site directly via the web, simply send e-mail to: downstat@pgh.net with the proper information (name, e-mail address, city and country) and I'll make sure you get listed on the page. Thanks! All you Numan fans out there with a home page - we want YOU! :-) I'm putting together a new Numan page, which consists SOLEY (since almost all the OTHER bases are covered) of links to home pages of Numan FANS. It's gonna be called "Numanoids 'R' Us" :-), the idea being, that you can get in there, and have a look at what OTHER things the OTHER fans are into. Perhaps you have MORE than the one (obvious) thing in common with them! And if you DON'T have a home page, don't forget about the profiles at "The Joy Circuit". *I* can take care of Numanoids with a home page, and John can take care of those who DON'T! So, anyone who DOES have a home page - write to me! It doesn't have to be a NUMAN page - just BEING a Numan fan qualifies you (Do we want to discuss again what constitutes a "fan"? Hmmm, maybe not. ;-) ). What I need from you is, the URL, the title of the page (if any), and a COUPLE of descriptive lines about yourself - just to give people a BIT of an idea about you, and they can decide if they WANT to go further (i.e. visit your page). The couple of lines should PREFERABLY (but not necessarily) reflect the CONTENT of your page. You can have a look at what I've ALREADY written to get an idea (my comments are more of a reflection of what I'm PLANNING on being there ;-) ), though, of course, each persons remarks should (hopefully) reflect their INDIVIDUALITY! ("WE'RE ALL INDIVIDUALS!". "I'm not") :-) And, if you can put a link back to THIS page on YOUR page, that helps to SPREAD THE WORD! ;-) (the word for today is 'legs',errrrr... 'numan' - spread the word). This page has not been OFFICIALLY announced yet - my home page is the ONLY one listed at this point. When I DO have a decent number of people there (and when the Web-counter people re-enable counter creation so that I can put a COUNTER on that page), then I'll announce it "officially" - and hopefully we'll get LOTS of hits, and hit a top-10 list, and from there get even MORE people getting into Numan, and, well...... I'm ALLOWED to dream, o.k.? :-) regards, DONALD - Down, but not out! Looking for work come March '97!! Now, I know all you Numanoids in the Mid-west of the US will be saying "Big Deal, 12", HA! We get that in an HOUR!" But you have to put it in perspective: Seattle is TOTALLY unprepared for this kind of weather... So, not only was the school at which I teach closed... so was the University of Washington! And THAT hasn't happend since 1991. So here I sit writing about something just so I can feel connected... Anyway, some news. Cara Plata, whom only a few of you know (Derek, Donald, Joey (I think)) and I are gettin' hitched after 10 years together. I met her shortly after Derek began his Doctorate :-) We will be married in Jefferson Texas, in the VERY same church as Cara's parrents and grandparrents were married. Her grandfather is doing the ceremony. Then, it is off to LAS VEGAS for a honneymoon at NEW YEARS!!! Then, a few days in LA where we hope Derek and Susan and Trevyn can join us for a celebratory dinner. Let me relate this to Numan.... When I first met Cara, her musical taste sucked. She actually LIKED Micheal Ja---- no, I refuse to spell out his name. The fourth reccord I ever played for her was Strange Charm by Numan. And she has been a fan ever since (though not as rabid as myself) At our wedding, we had a tough choice between "You walk in my soul" by Numan and "Upon your shore" by Enya. Enya won in a tie breaker, it just wouldn't seem right as Gary has a unique vocal style that none can match - this is why I REFUSE to listen to Numan covers. Anyway, I will soon be moving to Pullman WA. That is where Cara is doing her doctoral work in Genetics and Cell Biology. A FIVE year program. It is also where I hope to obtain my Masters of Education (Ed.M) which is a 1.5 year program. She is keeping her name, so am I. Congradulatory e-mail can be sent to her (for those of you who know her, or just want to be nice) at badger31@wsu.edu We have two pet rats named Control and Alt+Delete, two computers named PTERYX and ESCHER, and THAT is as close to KIDS as we are gettin' :-) Bye for now! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- orbit@ad1440.com (orbit@blarg.net) is: Robert Trousdale (206) 367-2254 formerly robt@u.washington.edu ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mandatory .sig quotes: "47.8% of all Statistics are Useless" -Anonymous "I'll be the in to your sane." -Gary Numan "While the kids live in filth and play in dirt, You think that's normal - That's the thing that hurts..." -William Orbit ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [END OF LINE] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Nov 1996 18:07:57 +1100 (EST) From: DONALD PEDDER Subject: The Definitive Poll - FINALLY! :-) To: Numanews Well, I'm a gonna be a FREE MAN in a few days. Who-HOOOO! :-) The end of 3 tortuous years. ANYWAY, what THIS means is I can FINALLY get around to finalising the results of "The Definitive Poll" (after a few failed attempts previously - JUST when you think you have your LIFE under control......). So, 2 things. Those who HAVE sent me votes (from a while back) MIGHT like to just REVIEW what they sent me, and update if desired. Only a SMALL job compared to the ORIGINAL task. ;-) If you don't it's fine. MOST of the votes came in at around the same time ANYWAY, so the results WILL be consistent - just for a little WHILE back, that's all. :-) The other thing is, that I'm sure SOME of you out there might like to speculate as to what might be No.1. :-) Or for that matter, the LAST song, or what song finshes in the exact MIDDLE (a WEE bit more difficult than trying to guess No.1. :-) ). Come ON. Let's pump up the size of the DIGEST guys. It's been looking rather PALE lately. ;-) Should have the results out by the END of next week. regards, DONALD - Down, but not out! Although the details of it are fuzzy, I had that one taped and I remember going over it with a fine-tooth comb and discovered they did indeed spell it as "Newman" (aka Dr. Newman). Can't remember where I spotted it.
