My Introduction Poll Speculation Q & A's subscriber hy i'm new Uhh? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Nov 1996 13:21:38 GMT From: Jeff Schneider Subject: about me To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Thanks for adding my name to the mailing list. I've been into Numan's music since I first saw him on TOTP (a show on UK television, about which the least said the better) way back in 1979. Disco music was in full swing; punk was on its way out - and here was something alttogether different. I rushed out to buy <>, and was entranced. Numan's vision of a Weberian dystopia, together with hints of alienation and shades of Fritz Lang's <> led me to the work of American writer Philip K. Dick and his fuiturisitc nightmares. I suppose everyone has their own interpretation of Numan's lyrics, and any pronouncement on their <> merit is bound to be subjective, but for me, the <> album was the apotheosis of the themes Numan had been dealing with since <>, and even before:- All the images of alienation, anemotionalism and misanthropy may heve been just an act - but what an act! Numan may have been torn to pieces by the music press in recent years ( those laughing hyenas, with pens for charms), but their opnions are valid only as subjective interpretations - I do not need someone else to tell me what is good, or worth listening to!. If they don't like Numna's work, let them listen to the smurfs instead! Regards Jeff. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Nov 1996 18:38:20 -0500 From: Ultravox5@aol.com Subject: Asylum box set and "Joey" To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I cannot remember the subscriber's name, but someone I had corresponded with on here was looking for Asylum recently and I had referred them to a record store in Sacramento Calif called the Beat....well,.....I was just there yesterday(Wednesday) and they have it again in the used section....so,that person may want to call thgere and order it. Regarding "Joey"....who does he think he is lecturing to us on the validity of our thougts and the appropriateness/inappropriateness of what is discussed on here as if he is some higher than the rest of us know-it-all???????? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Nov 1996 12:09:57 -0800 (PST) From: Rob Trousdale Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #283 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Okay, here we go: At the risk of incurring the wrath and possible eternal flaming of Nigel Day, Alex Deacon, and whomever else feels offended by the following... I post it anyway because aside from Donald NO-ONE else knows where I live :-) The thinly veiled and sometimes DIRECT attacks on fellow members of this digest are childish, pointless, and can only lead to more of the same - I therefor REFUSE to respond to any of it BUT - when my friends are attacked, rest assured, I keep count. As to the many and varied LEGIT issues raised in the last few digests: POINT number one: I think our Cab driving friend to the north, Joey L., said it best in his posting to the lastest issue (thanks for the breath of reason Joey :-) And as far as Cab driving is concerned, I have fond memories of riding in taxi cabs across America and Canada when my family traveled... for the most part, they were helpful, entertaining, and knowlegable about their various cities... I only hope if I ever need a Cab in Calgary that Joey is the next in the Queue... we will be able to properly test his rig's stereo :-) POINT number two: The use by SOME of us of EMPHASIS is an inevitable side effect of not being able to actually TALK to each other thus having all emotion ripped from our words by the electric medium in which we write. NO-ONE should be offended by this, or criticized for it. Oh look, there I went responding to the criticism I said I wouldn't ... to hell with it. I regret nothing :-) POINT number three: Gary Numan is a very special man. He is not beyond reproach, but the best thing to say about it is the oft repeated cliche "If you can't say anything nice about someone..." Let me ask you all this: have YOU accomplished what Gary has? Have you lead his life? ARE you his fans? Criticize his music all you want, criticize his beliefs all you want, BUT don't resort to subjective attacks about who is hip and so forth... besides, the fans at Skinny Puppy concerts were WAY more out there than Gary's ever were :-) My opinion of today's music is that for the most part it BITES. I live near Seattle but I can't stand GRUNGE. The tired retries at punk in the UK are boring and to be honest most of what I listen to would be considered garbage by others on the digest. Do I care? NO, we are all entitled to our opinions here. But lastly, we can never forget that the thing that brings us together twice a week is GARY NUMAN- his music, his life, whatever... If we were not genuinely interested in this, we would leave right? And if the best we can do is argue about how far off the mainstream he has fallen or how insipid his answers to our questions have been or any of a number of shortcommings we could name - then, maybe we should reconsider our memberships, right? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I can obtain a copy of the Japanese 4-CD set ASYLUM 2, which includes Telekon, Dance, I Assassin, and Warriors, plus a mountain of bonus tracks, for anyone in the US who wants it. E-mail me directly at hepcats@eden.com if interested. It's pricey but worth it, not only for the excellent sound quality, but also for a photo booklet that's jam packed with rare pictures from the period, though the liner notes are of course in Japanese. My name is Gary Pennill and I live in Manchester England. A big Numan fan, I have followed him since ''79 with the honour of going to every one of his british tours. I have met GN a couple of times and found him to be quite genuine in his opinions. Originally I collected all releases, buying the same record in different formats many times over but stopped after machine and soul due to expense. I am all for obtaining various versions of a song but enough is enough. Musically I believe Gary's music is back on track after ditching the female singers. (too much of a Prince influence methinks). Being a long time fan I have many Items on Video (VHS format) although not much dating b4 1983. (didn't have a video) I try to attend all Numan discos within 200km although am somewhat dismayed at recent turnouts. Went to see Play like God last week and was pleased with what I considered a good set, with good sound although a little short. Where was all the publicity?. Other musical interests include Sisters of Mercy, Depeche Mode, Early Ultravox and the odd release present day. Reading the digest I was dismayed at some of the critical comments to be read. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but a little thought goes a long way. Some of the comments seem to be bitter and twisted and its sad to have fans who appear to begrudge being fans. Going on to Numan, this year Gary has probably recieved more publicity than the previus decade put together yet rather than release new material he has held off to make way for inferior Techno releases and a new record deal. Gary, you should strike whilst the irons hot, publicity does not come cheap, keep the momentum going To everyone: all the best, ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Nov 1996 15:44:43 GMT From: James Sabin Subject: Poll Speculation To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) I sing Rain is one my favourites definitely not bottom J ------------------------------ Date: 28 Nov 96 16:59:56 EST From: Nigel Day <100675.1253@CompuServe.COM> Subject: Q & A's To: numan Hmmm. One again our trans-atlantic minions fail to see the irony Q) Is valid criticism of Gary and/or his music on-topic in this list? A) Yes Q) Is mindless flaming of Gary and/or his music on-topic in this list? A) Why not? Most other topics on here are mindless a lot of the time-album of the month and a few other bits and pieces excepted. Q) Should people who engage in the latter continue subscribing to this list? A) Of course. Anyone who doesn't agree has obviously never heard of freedom of speech. Q) Are discussions about such mundane topics as Gary's cats on-topic and/or relevent? A) Relevant or not-the simple fact is if anyone really is interested in this kind of nonsense then they really should get a life. Mind you, I've often wondered what kind of sanitary towels Gemma buys :-) Q) Is Gary's music garbage compared to the rest of today's modern music? A) Compared to most Yank music- No. Otherwise...Yes and No, but then Numan has never really belonged anywhere, anywhen Q) Is the answer to the last question relevent to this list? A) Who really gives a toss?? Replicas is cool. Machine and Soul stinks..End of story (Morning Glory) Q) Should Matthew Holbrook promote the band "Play Like God" on his web site? A) He can do what he likes on his web site. It's not as if Play Like God are any good. Q) Are questions about Matthew Holbrook's writing style and/or the content of his web site relevent to this discussion list? A) As much as criticisms of anyone elses is. Q) Did Alexander Deacon ask an innocent question about whether this list is moderated, or did he indirectly accuse Dave and Derek of censorship? A) Yes it was an innocent question. Strange though that I have posted stuff here and it has never been seen. Probably Mr Nobody ;-) Q) Does Gary Numan "owe" us anything? A) No thanks Q) Did Gary's performances at the festivals suck? A) Unknown Q) What exactly is it that inspires such deep loyalty in Gary Numan's fans? A) The same that inspires loyalty in any fan base. It's not just Numan and Numanoids. People still go to see Gary Glitter. Now that really IS loyalty Q) Joey, have you finished lecturing us yet? A) If we're lucky. Nigel desperately clinging onto his pleasure principle pyramid and dreaming about stiff fleshy things in warm places ;-) What album are we talking about this month then?? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Nov 1996 11:47:40 -0800 From: Ingo Weinard <106074.1471@compuserve.com> Subject: subscriber hy i'm new To: numan-request@cs.uwp.edu hello my name is Ingo Weinard.
