Japanese ASYLUM 2 available!!!! Okay, let's get back to live and let live! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Dec 1996 01:55:42 -0500 From: Scorbie Subject: Fury & Strange Charm reissue problems To: Numan Digest Hello everyone. Long time no see. The list's designated drunk is back! HI DONALD!, hi Joe & Deana, Jeff, Plano, Julie, how ya doin' there Derek?, it's coming Datta, no... really! TR? hmmmm..... get on the SevHeads list already. Uncle Tom Ellard wants to have a word with you. The reason I've crawled out of the pit in which I lurk, and back into the Numan Battle Arena of Non Tolerance, is to complain about the lack of detail, common sence and attention that Gary gives to his releases. Don't get me wrong. I love him with all of my heart and would even buy an album if it were called "Gary Numan- His Favo(u)rite Farts. A Collection". The Fury (reissue) NUMACDX 1003: 1. The right channel crackles throughout most of the ablum. It is not my system. I have a 500 watt Dolby Surround receiver and speakers to match. It is especially worse towards the end, which contains some of Numan's finest work. 2. It's nice that he released the extended version, but with only 51 minutes and 49 seconds used why not include the b-sides? Ahhhhhh... we must spend *more* money and get the Babylon series. Fine. Strange Charm (reissue) NUMACDX 1005: 1. Why did this CD's catalogue number include the X? The X means it's eXtended! 2. And he didn't even throw on "Time To Die". Oh right! I gotta get the Babylon series and spend over $100us for a few fucking songs! Fine. Now let's go back to the reissue of Berserker. It's catalogue number was NUMACD 1001. And that was the eXtended version as well. Where's the X? And guess what. No B-sides. We have to buy the Receiver shit or.... If I have to shell out $25us a pop for these reissues, and Gary knows we will regardless of what he says, why can't he just do it right? Include the b-sides and get the sleeve notes right. That's all I ask. Well, too late now. On a more positive note, the new photos and artwork are well done. The dropout during "Unknown & Hostile" is gone, not that I ever listen to that turd of a tune. The fold out poster for SC is gone, which makes the original more collectable. The goofy smile on the back of the Fury has been replaced with a very nice shot and the titles on the back of each disc are no longer seperated by a "side one - side two" which is a nice touch. And that's my point. If he can make an effort to do that, why can't he get his own catalogue numbers right? "Oh, uh, he's busy dealing with his crashing Mac". Get an upgrade. :-) Alright. I'm done. I partially playing anyway, but I do think he should get his act together about these little things. It could be horribly confusing to a casual fan. Maybe we'll get really lucky and it will take him *another* year to get Exile finished. ;-) I will have another, thank you. See ya'll next year! scorbie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Dec 1996 09:20:47 -0500 From: Ingo Weinard <106074.1471@compuserve.com> Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #282 To: Gary Numan hi my name is ingo, Sacrifice is a very good album. But it is allways very difficult to say weather it's the best or the second best or whatever. You can't compare Sacrifice with Replicas or Telekon or Dance. They are all to different. We have another time and so another thinking for a lot of things. I love Replicas, and everything until Fury was my youth in only positive ways. Sacrifice is brilliant in many ways: Music,Lyrics, Beat, Artwork and and....... But it sound to muffled, it is to unfresh. So i give Sacrifice 8 of 10 points (about the sound) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Dec 96 02:33:39 -0500 From: Steven_Hampton@stratus.com Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #284 To: (null) Here's my humble two cents worth... > Q) Is valid criticism of Gary and/or his music on-topic in this list? > > A) Yes Agree! > Q) Is mindless flaming of Gary and/or his music on-topic in this > list? > > A) Why not? Most other topics on here are mindless a lot of the time-album > of the month and a few other bits and pieces excepted. > > Q) Should people who engage in the latter continue subscribing to > this list? > > A) Of course. Anyone who doesn't agree has obviously never heard of freedom > of speech. > > Q) Are discussions about such mundane topics as Gary's cats on-topic and/or > relevent? > > A) Relevant or not-the simple fact is if anyone really is interested in > this kind of nonsense then they really should get a life. Mind you, I've > often wondered what kind of sanitary towels Gemma buys :-) I'd hafta agree that she's quite a looker!!! > Q) Is Gary's music garbage compared to the rest of today's modern music? > > A) Compared to most Yank music- No. Otherwise...Yes and No, but then Numan > has never really belonged anywhere, anywhen > > Q) Is the answer to the last question relevent to this list? (snip) > Q) Should Matthew Holbrook promote the band "Play Like God" on his web > site? > > A) He can do what he likes on his web site. It's not as if Play Like God > are any good. That's right! He's the webmaster. If someone doesn't like it they can rent a UNIX account and start their own! > Q) Did Alexander Deacon ask an innocent question about whether this > list is moderated, or did he indirectly accuse Dave and Derek of > censorship? > A) Yes it was an innocent question. Strange though that I have posted stuff > here and it has never been seen. Probably Mr Nobody ;-) I never read Alexander's quesiton. But, I myself posted a question simply asking what the chances of modifying this list to an open format and it NEVER POSTED!!! So, what am I to believe? 1: If I analyze the situation and circumstances, keeping in mind that I, myself, am a computing professional, in networking technologies, I'd have to say that SMTP rarely fails. Even if it does you're notified. I never saw mail from my mailer-deamon, so I quite naturally assumed that it had been filtered. I was quite miffed that out of all of the sillyness that makes it through here at times, a legit question gets filtered. 2: Could the powers that be have accidently deleted it? Possibly, which is why I never made a fuss of it. However, noting the above instances of "failed postings", one does wonder. 3: Could there be a dammaged ego? Possibly. I'm not looking to ruffle any feathers here by posing a simple question. And, if it does, then perhaps I'm associating with the wrong types. In all actuallity, with any sort of admin responsiblities comes the feeling of power. Some handle it different than others do. 4: Could I be whining here? Possible, but, morlikely a probablility. 5: Censorship? Yes. No matter how you spin it, either for "the good" or for the bad of the list, it IS by definition a censored or controlled environment. I'd -PREFER- that it not be, but, I'm clearly not "the man." in this matter. I've thought long and hard about some of the private debate that Joey L. and I had a month or two ago: It simply comes down to OPINION. I personally think that you ought to be able to bring up anything you like, pro or con about GN or related topics. As on other mailing lists, there is, from time to time, stray topicallity. No harm in that at all in my opinion. I DON'T think that personal attacks on list-members is time well spent for the sake of the list itself, but, to filter out such is beckoning socialism. Another note, too... I don't subscribe to any brand of "protectionism" of the Numan name. The fact that Gary doesn't even read this list makes me suspect the motive(s) behind filtering comments. Gary's a big boy and doesn't need anyone to fight his battles for him. There's nothing that could be wrongfully said here that hasn't already been wrongfully charged by R1 and the BBC, anyway. And anyone who spams Gary and or his accomplishments (both professionally and personally) simply doesn't know the man. I know most of us are proud to be a a fan of one of rock's most unique artists. However, I don't believe that anyone, be they a list-member, or a member of the Numan Network camp should ENTITLE them- selves to tell us what we can and can't say herein. As long as this list is moderated the suspiscion of such is ever present. 6: Dave, Derek, Matthew, Joey, and others of the Numan Network. I think these people do a tremendus SERVICE us all and provide a medium to at least communicate regarding GN. I may disagree with certain aspects of it, but overall, I'd say the job is well done!!! Mailing lists, just as websites operate at the disgression of their list and owners. If it is deemed that a particular list or website contain or not contain specific information, then, so beit, as far as I'm concerned. However, if I personally were to decide download a Majordomo mailserver and configure it as a numan-list, then I too, could choose how to configure it. I'm reasonabley sure that that won't happen though. :) The point of the previous paragraph is that no one person or group of persons should ultimately have the power to stiffle comments that he or she doesn't agree with. There's no possible way to COMPETE with the Digest as it is truely UNIQUE in the service that it offers. > Q) Are questions about Matthew Holbrook's writing style and/or the > content of his web site relevent to this discussion list? > > A) As much as criticisms of anyone elses is. I Agree. And if anyone doesn't like what I say they should be entitled to express it! > Q) Does Gary Numan "owe" us anything? > > A) No thanks Well, that's true. But, I wouldn't look a gift-horse in the mouth. We're very fortunate that Gary is ABLE to provide as much time to us as he does, but, on the other hoof, that's what he does for a living. So, round about (excellent song!!) or directly, he kinda owes it to himself. :) > Q) Did Gary's performances at the festivals suck? > > A) Unknown Like I would know living here in Atlanta. :-) > Q) What exactly is it that inspires such deep loyalty in Gary Numan's fans? > > A) The same that inspires loyalty in any fan base. It's not just Numan and > Numanoids. People still go to see Gary Glitter. Now that really IS loyalty > > Q) Joey, have you finished lecturing us yet? > > A) If we're lucky. Joey makes some good sense Holy SHIT! This is a no-shitter folks! Just as I'm sitting here at 2:15 am on a Monday monring, the local alternative radio station (WNNX - 99x) just started playing CARS (original version)!!!!! Crappy time slot! Beats none at all i rekon. Anyway, as i was typing, Joey made some good points, some I agree with others I don't. > Nigel desperately clinging onto his pleasure principle pyramid and dreaming > about stiff fleshy things in warm places ;-) Boy, talk about pyramids! I've not heard Cars on the radio here in ten or more years! steveh - Atlanta, GA, USA ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Dec 1996 09:29:29 -0800 From: ROSEOMEN@IX.NETCOM.COM Subject: Ghost of a White Face Clown tape To: numan@cs.uwp.edu T.W.i.M.Interest - On 14 Oct 96, I sent a check for $8- to N.E.C. in Issaquah WA ( USA ) for the cassette of Ghost of a ... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu After many hard years of setbacks and false starts I am pleased to tell you all that I can now put the letters Ph.D. after my name. I got the last signature on my disseration Tuesday afternoon. I am relieved (it's over at last), elated (I did it) and worried (time to find a job) all at the same time. I expect to be here at SDSU for a couple more months if our research group director can find some funds for me to tie up the loose ends, but I expect to have this email address for the forseeable future. I know the sunstroke syspop well (a colleague of my wife). Once I get a job and move out of my office I'll have access only from home unless my new job has on-line capability. We hope to upgrade our home access as soon as it is feasible. So, I expect to be back on the Digest more regularly from now on. I have not had time to respond to the latest round of disagreements but expect to soon. I also need to answer some questions that have been raised. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Allrighty then! There seem to be a few people out there who think this list is about talking down about other people...gee, and here I thought most of The Numan's fans were past early adolescence (oops, flame!). Anyhow, if *ahem* I can get a moment on here to say my bit, STOP PUTTING EVERYONE ELSE DOWN! IT ONLY MAKES YOU LOOK AN ASS! (and if you think I'm talking to you I probably am). Okay, so I missed the posts on the cats....I'd be appreciative if anyone can send me the back issues since I'm a cat person (there Nigel, and I have a life, thanks) and one can tell alot about a man by his relationship with his pets. As for how people dress at concerts...did they pay for their ticket? Are they enjoying themselves? Are all critical parts of their anatomy semi-covered? Than back off and let them enjoy themselves. I for one would be extremely bored going to a concert with only T-shirted stiffs and suits in the audience. I don't honestly know how things are over in the UK, but here in California, we think of clubbing and concert-going as opportunities to get into costume and just escape reality for a bit. Those not brave enough to make public spectacles of themselves at least enjoy seeing the show put on by the posers, it's part of the concert and club atmosphere. And Numanoids would not be a select group in this. Egads, Michael Jackson inspires imitation beyond reason as do also Madonna, Prince, Metallica, you name it. Do we at all believe that any of these artists (using the term in its generic sense lest I start a trend of what constitutes an artist) sit around reading the Sunday paper in costume? It's show business, for pete's sake, and the "show" is what makes the "business", so sit back and enjoy the bizarre and strange along with the silly and fantastic. (Wow, am I getting way to existential here...been reading too many books on quantum physics and am also having a X-Files craving here, so please forgive the tangential thoughts). Now as for the images on Berzerker and Warriors and other such artistic album and tour costumes. Well, this may be a purely female type thing, but I like 'em if only because they are full of fantasy and imagination, and they show off his pout and his eyes (that is DEFINATELY a female type thing). Are they "cool"? Who cares? I like them, therefore in the entirely subjective definition of the word, yeah, they are. If they aren't cool to you, close your eyes while you fumble for the album or tape over it or do whatever is necessary to make your life easier, but no need to impose your version of cool on everyone else. And one more request...this one much more simple. Please do not make snide little remarks encompassing an entire country, since it will inevitably lead to a nationalistic flame war. Believe me, I have seen it happen on other lists and it is not pretty. If you have a comment to make about another subscriber's posting, direct it at him, and not his nation. Out of breath and vehemence now, so catch ya round the Joy Circuit.... Lyssa Take a ride out in my imagery of ages And heaven knows what you will find... --G.
