Gary Numan Digest Thu, 26 Dec 96 Volume 1 : Issue 291 Today's Topics: An Intro to myself Ghost of a White Faced Clown comp The Fury reissue ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Dec 1996 19:44:58 -0800 From: Peter Falkus Subject: An Intro to myself To: "'numan@cs.uwp.edu'" Hello,=20 My name is Pete Falkus, I've been a Numan fan for about 16 years but = have to admit that I lost interest from around 1986 to 1993. The = re-release of Numan's LP's from Beggars Banquet sparked my interest off again. I've seen Gary once during the 1983 Warriors Tour, twice on the 1984 = Berserker Tour, once on the 1985 Fury Tour and lastly once during the = 1996 Premier Tour. Favourite album would be a toss up between Replicas and The Pleasure = Principle. Other artists I enjoy are (in no particular order) David Bowie, Genesis, = U2, Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morrisette and Pink Floyd. I use to play drums at home and drive my folks crazy with the row. Thats all that springs to mind at the moment. PS: When is Living Ornaments finally going to be issued on CD ????? Thanks Pete ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Dec 1996 17:39:52 -0800 (PST) From: Lisa Mesplay Subject: Ghost of a White Faced Clown comp To: numan@cs.uwp.edu > Date: Sun, 15 Dec 1996 07:13:51 -0600 > From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) > Subject: Ghost Of A White Face Clown > > Has anyone heard from NEC (the folkes that made the Numan tribute tape > called "Ghost Of A White Face Clown")? > The last I heard in the Digest, NEC had moved addresses and had not come > through on delivering the tribute tape to some members who wanted it. I I've heard from somebody very recently, and it sounds like NEC is winding down. There are *two* copies of the tape left, and he's sending them to me. If Omenrose would like to send me e-mail, I'd be happy to send one of them to hir. > I'm fairly certain that it never came out on anything other than cassette True, and now of course it's unlikely to come out on disc... > If NEC is "Out Of Business" or cannot come through to make more of their > Numan tribute tapes, I might be able to run a few off for Digest members at > cost. I think this is something worth talking about again. It does seem to come up now and then, the issue of whether it is OK to make copies of unavailable materials and provide them to other fans at cost. Strictly speaking, the thing *is* copyrighted, and we are in violation when we do this. But it's frustrating when fans can't get hold of material through no fault of their own. This particular case is specifically awkward for me, being up here in Seattle where the bands who perform the music are actually located. Did Gary himself ever address the issue of how he felt about fans making copies of his stuff in violation of copyright? Royalties aside, what are his thoughts on the ethical ramifications? -- Lisa in Seattle, having a case of Christmas Eve scruples. Don't worry; they'll go away. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Dec 1996 20:15:41 -0600 From: machman@interaccess.com (Jeff Tolva) Subject: The Fury reissue To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi all! I just got my CD reissue of "The Fury" last week and I also have to express my disappointment in the sound quality. I don't envy Derek breaking the news to Gary either :-) There is a very slight "buzzing" noise on the right channel throughout the CD. It's not terribly noticable at "normal" volume. It is noticable when having the stereo cranked up a bit or worse yet if you have headphones on. Because this persistant buzz is throughout the CD, I have to assume it's either due to Gary having this "baking" process done to it to restore the material from the master tapes OR it's due to the transfer process to the CD format (there's alot that goes on here, so it's difficult to speculate on what I don't know much about). In either case, it was a little disappointing as "The Fury" is an excellent album IMO and I was so looking forward to having the extended tracks on CD finally! I would have still ordered the CD even if I had known in advance of placing my order for the CD, but I thought I'd throw mt .02 worth into the pot anyway -:) I'd still like to know the story behind this buzz, if there is one to give.
